@effieotto mentioned in a post the possibility of Effie’s name being Persephone instead of Euphemia and it got me thinking about a very loose connection. Persephone in Greek mythology unwillingly became the queen of the underworld, she rules it with Hades who makes sure none of the souls escape their fate, he remains with the dead, but she is only there once per year. I feel like this kind of mirrors Effie and Haymitch a little even though Haymitch was not the reason Effie became involved with the games, just here me out. Effie was asked (demanded more likely) to become the escort for district 12 because of how well she helped her sister, she only has to deal with the games (death) once per year though. Haymitch on the other hand is always dealing with death, he gets constant visits from the souls of the dead in his sleep and constant reminders when he wakes, Haymitch is, in a way, always in the games. Even though it’s likely that Haymitch tried to help the tributes in the beginning he seemed to have given up by the time Katniss and Peeta came about, it’s almost as if he ensured they didn’t make it back to the land of the living. Does anyone see what I see?

what hurts the most is that Haymitch was not a rebel in the core. He was just a boy who wanted to spend his days lying in the meadow with his girl, watching the stars with Sid and his ma, and eating cake in the new year for as long as the universes allowed him to. He didn’t spend his days dreaming of a free world, or criticizing the government with Burdock like Katniss did with Gale. He was just chilling with his folks and enjoying the little treats the universe guaranteed him

Every single revolutionary act he did was for someone else. He exploded the Arena to make Lenore Dove proud. He kept strong after Ampert’s death so Sid wouldn’t have to watch him break in live television. He kept his head held high so his family wouldn’t be ashamed of being related to him. He fought with Silka to honor Willie’s death. He won the games to keep the promise he made for Maysilee. And he forced himself to survive and fight a whole war, so he could honor all the others who trusted him to break the rules and find freedom…Haymitch was not a rebel, but he did it anyway, cause he made a promise for the people he loved, and would keep it.

My work has the radio on and I usually don't really listen to it....but Elizabeth Banks has a really weird Pfizer PSA out about the pneumonia vaccine that I can hear over my headphones cause it's a LOUD add and I'm getting jump-scared by Effie Fucking Trinket screaming at Gen X to get a vaccine every ten minutes which is just fucking surreal.

But like......

It's giving birth to a headcannon.

Post-Revolution Effie Trinket as one of the few remaining famous faces from before the war, one of the few faces and voices left that the capitol trusts, is SO going to be the Go-To girl for all government PSAs. Any time you want the skittish remaining citizens of the Capitol to do anything like get new IDs or Register to Vote or Get a New Vaccine, they're gonna have to trot out Effie Fucking Trinket in all her ruffly colorful glory and plunk her down in front of a camera to speak at them in her weird capitol version of the fundie baby voice and reassure them that look, she's still alive and okay, the new government isn't out to get you, so they'll turn out and not get scared this is some new rebel plot to exterminate them all. She doesn't want the job, but she's been doing her "patriotic duty" in front of the cameras for 25 years, so what's one more government using her face and voice for their own purposes, right?

Also apparently Elizabeth Banks is 50?? So she's now actually Effie's cannon Hunger Games/Catching Fire/Mockingjay era age. Weird.

🌸 The trembling of her hands allows me to ask a favor. "Will you make sure my token gets home to my girl?" Effie nods and lays a hand over it solemnly. "I will do my absolute best." She steps back and the door begins to slide shut. “Remember, Haymitch, don’t step off your plate for sixty seconds!”

🌸 I rise up, locking my eyes on hers until things go black, making me lose my bearings.

🌸 Her sister, Effie, told her a positive attitude's ninety-seven percent of the battle. And Maysilee ... Maysilee had said ...

🌸 I hope they've spared the prep team and Effie.

🌸 Behind them, my prep team huddles and would likely flee if Effie Trinket didn't have a firm grip on their grooming belts. "Well," she says with false cheeriness, "who's ready for a big, big, big night?"

Most of the fandom seems to believe the Trinket family were cannibals during the Dark Days and that’s why the family name was disgraced, but I personally don’t think so. We know from TBOSAS that there are areas of the Capitol that are less than ideal, a sort of criminal underbelly. I fully headcanon that the Trinkets were involved in running illegal brothels/casinos/were loan sharks. Think of their name, Trinket- “a small decorative object, or a piece of jewellery that is cheap or of low quality.” They’re not Heavensbee’s, Dovecote’s, Ravenstill’s… but Trinket’s. What faster way to launch yourself to the top of the Capitol than by obtaining money in an illegal way? In the series Effie is always over compensating, doing too much- and it works! She’s very popular in university, she created the Saturnalia party.. I believe all this was all in an effort to show that she was above her past, above the whispers and rumors of her family’s business. I could very much see the early Trinkets running shit like Bugsy Siegel, the gangster who basically created the Las Vegas strip. Trinket… the tacky Las Vegas strip… yall see where I’m going with this??

Sorry? Are you telling me that the Capitol-a city/regime that basically runs off of parties where drinking to excess is a daily occurance? And who seem to have made several medical advancements that alter the way bodies heal- has absolutely nothing that does the same thing in relation to alcohol?
