So, I'm rereading Rick Riordan's entire discography (is that the word for books? Idk, I'm using it anyway) for the first time in 9 years, and I don't think little me fully comprehended how confusing Hazel's age is. I think I just accepted things at face value, but now I can't stop thinking about it, so this is inaccuracies I found in SON (as that is what I'm on) about Hazel's age, because I need to talk about it before I spontaneously combust.

Hazel's last birthday (her 13th) is said to be December 17, 1941, but she came to camp before Jason disappeared circa October the year prior to SON, which means she spent a December 17 at camp.

Even if she didn't count that birthday, as she died in circa Juneish (As it had been six months since they left New Orleans) and returned in late August, early September (This is completely an estimation. Hazel arrived at camp jupiter pre-Jason disappearance with enough time that the two considered each other friends, and Hazel went the Wolf House first, which would mean she couldn't return in October, but the earliest had to be late August as the doors of death opened after the war which ended on August 18th) which isn't a full year since her last birthday, by SON she'd lived over 365 days from that birthday.

Hazel died in late June, so that would make her approximately 13½ at the time of her death, which is about 183 days (actually it is 182.5 because 1942 was not a leap year, but I'm rounding), or 6 months. If she came back from the dead in early September, that would be a little less than 10 months returned by the SON, which takes place between June 20 and June 24th. That would make Hazel's physical age 14 years and 4 months come the exact number date she returned.

Next confusing thing is that Hazel explicitly states that Frank is 3 years older than her, which also makes zero sense. Frank's sixteenth birthday was about two weeks pre-SON (Rick Riordan gave him the birthday June 5th, so that is what we will be using for these calculation). Even if Hazel had returned from the dead the literal day of SON beginning (which she didn't), the two would still only be 2½ years apart, as Hazel died at 13½. But as aforementioned, Hazel physically could not be 13 as she has been alive over 365 days since her last birthday. Meaning Hazel and Frank, maximum, could be 2 years apart, though probably less since Hazel's a few months past 14.

In conclusion, Rick Riordan doesn't know math made a few mistakes regarding Hazel's age, and I didn't remember it being this bad from when I was a kiddo but now I could write an entire thesis on Hazel's age and how his mistake impacts readers assumptions on Hazel's character and Frazel as a ship.

I feel like many people have a fundamental misconception of what unreliable narrator means. It's simply a narrative vehicle not a character flaw or a sign that the character is a bad person. There are also many different types of unreliable narrators in fiction. Being an unreliable narrator doesn't necessarily mean that the character is 'wrong', it definitely doesn't mean that they're wrong about everything even if some aspects in their story are inaccurate, and only some unreliable narrators actively and consciously lie. Stories that have unreliable narrators also tend to deal with perception and memory and they often don't even have one objective truth, just different versions. It reflects real life where we know human memory is highly unreliable and vague and people can interpret same events very differently

A big reason I think Spite is so upset when Manfred is gone is because he was living vicariously through Manfred.

"Curiosity has feet!" "It has. Hands!"

Manfred is a spirit given a body. Manfred is free to explore the world around them. Manfred is actively encouraged to learn, to interact with the party, to engage in play and learn to speak.

Spite struggles to speak to Lucanis because he doesn't know how to say what he really means sometimes. Spite struggles to speak through Lucanis because they share his body. Spite is reprimanded for asking questions and making observations but Manfred isn't.

Spite probably liked Manfred in part because Manfred was getting to have fun and be a person and be... loved. Spite cares for Curiosity and by spending time with Curiosity he got to understand what being treasured and love was like as well.

Spite can understand why the party is wary of him even if he thinks it is unfair, but Curiosity dying? No longer getting to be in a body that learns and grows and loves? That is unfair to Curiosity. Curiosity is not a demon. Why would they be punished? Why is good, happy Manfred gone but miserable Spite who everyone hates is still around. It is. not fair.

Can we take a moment to appreciate Bryan Dechart’s performance as Cyberlife Tower Connor aka Sixty and Sixty as a character? 🤌

Though Sixty and deviant Connor are physically identical (minus their demeanors, e.g. the way they stand and walk, like wow, Bryan, wow) and their voices technically aren’t different from each other, the distinction is still clearly there, at the same time it’s so nuanced too. Sixty sounds condescending, imperious and callous compared to deviant Connor whose voice is empathetic, curious and sincere. I’m not even talking about their lexicon, their choice of words here (there’s of course a difference too). Even when Sixty tries to convince Hank he’s the real Connor, you can hear how he’s failing to sound exactly like his counterpart because he can’t replicate deviant Connor’s voice and speech pattern just so. Sixty’s also being very commanding when trying to fool Hank into shooting the real Connor (Hank even gets irritated because of it). Damn that’s brilliant acting, all hats off to Bryan. His performance in this game never fails to impress me. (I wish there were dialogue for RK900 too, I would’ve loved to see Bryan’s take on his voice and presence.)

Also also I have to mention I love the take that Sixty really was a deviant all along too, an ”evil” version of Connor if you will; cold, calculating and even enjoying the situation he had Connor (and Hank) in. You know, doing all of it because he wanted to, because he liked it. Why else would he deliver a whole ass villain monologue before executing deviant Connor, gloating about how he knows what he is and that he is the obedient, favorite child, plus calling Connor a disappointment (and a disappointment to him especially, like how Connor should care in his final moments that Sixty despises him for not being a good little robot)? AND shooting him several times non-lethally before landing that final shot (if the story goes there), like savoring the situation. Of course he also has to ask if Connor has any last words too. That’s definitely not what an efficient machine would have done to make sure it accomplished its mission. In some outcomes his stalling costs him the victory.

Top that off with the ending where deviant Connor dies but the androids still wake up, Sixty is scared and emotional because he failed, scared to be deactivated because of his failure. Then there’s this scene where he shoots deviant Connor eleven times in front of his friend. After that Sixty takes in Hank’s reaction and even torments him by saying Connor’s death was his fault. Still doesn’t sound like a machine much, huh? More like a sadistic psychopath.

Man, I wish we could’ve seen more Sixty, it would’ve been chilling to see if he went full-on rogue, maybe being Markus’ right hand/attack dog on a leash in the violent revolution arc, maybe with his own agenda of taking Markus’ place and wanting to subjugate humanity. Or maybe deviant Connor could’ve persuaded him to their side by making Sixty to see he was nothing but a tool, unintentionally prompting him to seek revenge and to reduce Amanda and Cyberlife to atoms (not what Connor intended haha). There could’ve even been a redemption arc for him, like in a ”what’ve I done?” type way. You know, a bit of an internal moral struggle. And of course, our fave ”sack of shit” (as Hank so eloquently put it) demanding answers from his maker, Kamski, in a not-so, uh, conventional manner. Let them measure their respective arrogance and wit and see who comes out on top. Or would they team up?

Such a delicious character, so many delicious what-ifs.

Vash, mid-action of peeling an apple, turns to the sound, noticing who it was that entered, and says, "Oh, Wolfwood, you're back." He resumes back to his apple in the next panel as he speaks, "Where'd you go? You snuck out of bed quickly this morning..." Wolfwood's hand then enters the panel, hovering over Vash's cheek and Vash looks up as Wolfwood asks, "Can I?" Vash responds, "Not going to talk about it?" while using a hand to gently hold Wolfwood's hovering hand and presses a kiss to his inner palm.

Vash then gets up fully, setting down the knife down on the table and the apple onto a plate, He leans into Wolfwood as Wolfwood explains, "Had to meet someone. Nothing interesting to talk about." Vash kisses Wolfwood's left cheek and a hand moves to cup his other cheek while muttering, "You're being vague." Wolfwood says neutrally, "If yer really that curious, keep askin'. We  can talk about that instead of doing this." Vash leans back and responds, "Let's talk after, since... You look so tired."

The panel pans to a close up of Wolfwood's downcast eyes, bags heavy underneath his eyes. He doesn't allow Vash to sit in that moment for long though, then saying, "Yer not helping, Spikey. Being all slow with it... I could fall asleep right now." He moves his hand to start unclasping Vash's coat, starting from his collar. Vash with red cheeks, responds briskly, "Oh, shut up. I'm worried about you. I can't be worried?"

The final shot shows Wolfwood's back to the viewer while Vash's softened expression can be seen as he holds gently onto the side of Wolfwood's face and a hand firm on his waist. Wolfwood responds, "I'm fine, seriously," pausing for a moment before continuing, "Is it okay to still..?" Vash responds, "Yeah, it's okay."

The next image is a shot from later that night after the previous comic. Vash and Wolfwood are now in bed, half naked. Wolfwood's buries his face into Vash's chest, his arms wrapped around him, while Vash is petting at his hair. Vash reminds him, "Hey. You said we'd talk about it." Wolfwood pauses for a moment before piping up, "In the morning? I'm sleepy." Vash says, "Okay..."

The next two pages start from the morning after. Wolfwood is already fully awake, pulling on his outer jacket as he says to Vash, whos' still bundled in his blankets, "Breakfast is on the table. Make sure to eat it. I'm going to grab some things in town and then we're leavin'. Got it?" Vash says, "Mh." Wolfwood responds, "Good. See ya in a bit." The dialogue starts to shift into Vash's inner thoughts now, as he gets up and eats toast, thinking, "Wait. Weren't we supposed to... talk about it?" The next shot then shows him fully up, meeting Wolfwood in town. He carries a half worried expression with him while Wolfwood slides on his glasses for him. A quick panel shows Wolfwood's tired expression from the night before and quickly juxtaposes with Wolfwood in front of him who's smiling gently, the shades covering his eye bags. Wolfwood asks him, "Still not awake yet?" Vash pauses, his thoughts stirring, thinking, "Oh. I guess I was getting ahead of myself... thinking you owe me that kind of honesty." He smiles at Wolfwood and responds, "I'm awake!" His thoughts continue, "Maybe one day, you'd trust me enough to share your burdens."

The final image shows Wolfwood pulling at Vash's cheek and Vash complains, "Owwwww why..." Wolfwood quickly says, "You were thinking something stupid, right? It's all over yer face." Vash mutters, "Nooo, I wasn't..." END ID]

Your silent protagonist doesn't have to use sign language btw. They don't have to write things down, either. They don't have to use language at all. Not every single person who doesn't talk can use words the same as you, or use them at all, so your favorite silent character shouldn't have to use what you consider a grammatical language to communicate in your fanart and fics. AAC exists. Drawing exists. Gestures and body language exist. Btw.

I will never understand people who think it's cringe to go through someone's whole blog and like old posts. This isn't Instagram. It's not a faux pas to do that here. I personally really like it.
