Unfolding Oz
Inspired by L. Frank Baum’s original classic, The Wizard of Oz in Pictures is a delightful, tiny accordion book created by book artists Peter and Donna Thomas and printed in 2001 in an edition of 26 lettered and 75 numbered copies in Santa Cruz, California. The couple have worked collaboratively since 1977, creating over 500 handcrafted books. The Wizard of Oz in Pictures was commissioned for the International Wizard of Oz Club, and is reproduced from a one-of-a-kind of the same name by Donna Thomas that used her own handwritten text and watercolor illustrations. Donna Thomas writes:
It tells the story in one continuous illustration (follow the Yellow Brick Road!) that is folded as an eight-panel accordion. I chose to use our nested accordion binding to complement the theme of movement in the story, from the flying house to the flying monkeys, and the cloth binding material was inspired by Dorothy's gingham dress.
Our copy is an artists' proof and is a gift of the artists. You can view nearly all of Peter and Donna Thomas's artists books in our online catalogue raisonné of their work.

Barbara: What did you get Dick for his birthday?
Jason: I got him a Glutemaster
Barbara: Really? Me too!
Stephanie: I also got him a Glutemaster.
Duke, gesturing to himself and Tim: Looks like we had the same idea.
Jason, sighing: Kill me. Please tell me you didn’t get Dick a Glutemaster as well.
Cass: I got him… a Glutemaster 🥰
Later-
Dick, surrounded by Glutemasters: THIS IS THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!

So ever since the news Murtagh and Thorn were getting thier own book I’ve been morphing back into the feral 13 year old baby fangirl with her first book boyfriend.
Only this time, I’m 31 with the yarn skills to make a cardigan to snuggle in when I binge it! It’s so big and so cozy and 😍🥰. I am OBSESSED with it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cardigan was knit flat seamlessly from the bottom up with increases to make the wing silhouette. The fronts and back were worked separately with short row shoulder shaping and joined with Kitchener Stitch. Stitches were then picked up for the buttonband and sleeve cuffs.
The pattern is mine, but I haven’t released it because it’s only written in one size and not tech edited. I haven’t done much size grading but if there’s a lot of interest I’ll consider it! Yarn is Knit Picks Swish Bulky on US 10.5/6.5mm needles.

Finished the spooky skulls and bats! I love the exposed binding of coptic stitch. This is upcycled paper from a sketchbook that fell apart.

New hobby just dropped (new hobby has been brewing for the last 3+ years)
1: 64mo blank book, aka 1/64 of a letter sized piece of paper. Total 1.5 sheets, dimensions ~1x1.5 in.
2: progress pic, the 64mo textblock. second binder clip is an attempt to make something even smaller than a 64mo
3: progress pic, the 64mo cut and folded signatures, ready to be punched and sewn
4: sticker of my bindery logo, which I designed myself :) + quarto notebook bc I made the textblock forever ago as practice, started using it as a notebook, and then figured if I was gonna use it, I should put a hard cover on it. It currently serves as my reference guide (paper size, suppliers, margins, etc).
Anyways it's so over. I'll see you in hell (WIP list)

Journal 3 🌲🌈
This was what I made my twin for his birthday. I didn’t know what to make him as usually he ask for a curtain thing and my default for him is gravity falls as he love the show. I send him wonder twins gifs and he demanded gravity falls gifs instead
I feel like it very Mabel of me to make this especially in 2 days
I know the binding is a bit off on the back but I really didn’t want to re do the whole thing as I didn’t know how long it would have taken and it hand made so it adds character

I literally pulled out all the notebooks and sketchbooks and took pages out of all of them to make this. It have different paper of different weights, even watercolor paper and I added a think broad so he could pain in the book. I added a pocket for tracing paper and a rebinded a line page booklet so it matches
And if you were wondering this was the wrapping paper I used haha
