And to feel the way I did during this scene again...
Ladies I would give my left kidney to watch Midnight Mass for the first time again
#it was the way he was trying to comfort Reilly and said that he was ok...#I want to watch it for the first time but having a bigger interest in Hamish early in the show#so I guess that doesn't count#oh well#midnight mass#hamish linklater

SPOILER WARNING FOR MIDNIGHT MASS IN THE SECOND PARAGRAPH. Story time! Yearssss again I had a bit of a manic stage where The Walking Dead was my obsessive fixation. My dad was the one to tell me about the show (because I love zombies) and I watched it since the first episode aired. I've always been "team" Rick until several season later when Negan came along. In the comic Negan's back story was more complexed and gave you a better idea of him as a character. Also though he's a dick it was certain morals he stood by that was what made him more appealing to me. Anywho, I remember watching the episode above where Rick was covered in blood and "going berserk" as I called it then and thinking it was such a hot scene.
Fast forward to 2021 after passing Midnight Mass several times on Netflix because vampires aren't my thing (I just find them to be boring) I finally watched it since I've heard good things and I really liked Mikes work. The sequences went as followed: started with a good storyline and a dash of jump scares. I was thankful I've never known a person like Bev and the new priest was an odd looking man. Then we get to the after math of Joes death and that poor little priest is tucked in the corner, covered in blood and pulling at my hearts. Finally, comes the scene where he's looking down at Reilly, shushing him and trying to calm him down when Hamish Eric Linklater locked me in.
TLDR: I'm not a vampire fan but something about men being covered In blood truly grabs my attention and I'm still in awe that the odd looking priest man name Hamish, turned out to be the hottest, (sweetest and genuine in real life) most talented man I adore today.

What if China were concealing the existence of real, live dragons? That is the premise of this high octane thrill ride. In a zoo, under heave security, a la Jurassic Park, China has brought dragons to life. The idea being set up a zoo where people can come see them in a controlled environment. Unfortunately the dragons have other ideas, and that causes mayhem and destruction on an apocalyptic scale.
Reilly is so creative, and his plots are so detailed and so well structured. In really broad strokes this is a lot like Jurassic Park, and in many important ways it is so, so different. The dragons are smart, they are problem solvers. How they were re-animated is different. The dragons have skills the dinosaurs didn't have. Also, there is an underlying threat at this zoo, that has nothing to do with dragons, and that adds a whole other level of drama and action to the plot.
CJ and her brother Hamish were two of my favorite characters. Hamish was the humor in this book, he was sassy and clever and really smart. CJ was a brilliant mind in her field. Tenacious, she never gave up, even when it seemed that all was lost and there was no other trick she could pull out of her sleeve.
A lot about the dragons, what they could do, how they coordinated and communicated was absolutely brilliant, and in a lot of ways unexpected. It made the book so much more interesting and thrilling. The danger and destruction and all out mayhem in this book was off the charts, it was a fantastic thrill ride from start to finish.

Would've been seeing @vukoviband live today.... so yet again I drew them instead! They released by far the best album of 2020 so far and I am living for it (was gonna draw a proper background this time but managed to corrupt the drawing file?? So another quick gradient it is)

Solaris reads The Great Zoo of China, by Matthew Reilly
The only way I'm going to be able to get through this book is by memeing it, because I'm 50 pages in and the number of times I've rolled my eyes is mind-boggling
Also I forgot who everyone was approximately two pages after they were introduced so this'll be fun
Spoilers will be unmarked below so block the #solaris reads the great zoo of china tag if you don't want to see them
The premise: Stop me if you've heard this one before...
A group of some of the top minds in their fields are invited to preview a first-of-its-kind zoo, a zoo featuring great animals no one thought they would ever see. The zoo is set to be a major tourist destination, so the stakes are huge. Nothing can go wrong, our main characters are assured, but the creatures escape their enclosures and come after the guests...
Yeah, this book is Jurassic Park, but with dragons, because it takes place in China and nothing else exists in China except pandas and dragons, apparently (that was sarcasm)
And with that, on to the book!
[Transcript: But the head didn't move. It was eerily still. In silhouette, the creature's high pointed ears looked like demonic horns.
The giant reptile took a step forward. It bent its head low, sniffing the ground. /end]
Page 4 and the illusion is already broken. Reptiles are quite notable for their overwhelming lack of external earlobes. If someone can think of a reptile with visible, pointed ears, do please let me know, I genuinely can't think of one
[Transcript: Once a renowned herpetologist–a reptile expert–these days CJ worked as a vet at the San Francisco Zoo. At thirty-six, she was a petite five foot six, with piercing amber eyes and shoulder-length blonde hair. /end]
...I'm sorry she's how tall?
[Transcript: CJ was fit, athletic, and pretty in a sporty kind of way. Men often approached her, only to turn away abruptly when they came close enough to see the grisly scars that dominated the left side of her face.
The scars stretched all the way from her left eye to the corner of her mouth, looking like a sequence of poorly aligned Xs. The ophthalmic surgeon had saved her eyesight. And the plastic surgeon, one of the best in America, had managed to reconstruct her jaw, but the slashing wounds to her left cheek had proven to be too much even for him.
CJ didn't care. For vapid men or for herpetology, not after the incident. All her life she had been something of a tomboy anyway. She didn't bother with makeup and she didn't mind getting her hands dirty. She lived outdoors: hiking, camping, horse riding. A keen horsewoman, she sometimes preferred the company of horses to people. /end]
Okay, so she's a literal Barbie doll with one absolutely horrible flaw, oh no, oh dear /s
I always feel like people who write descriptions of women like that - pretty except for one thing that totally ruins their looks and makes them utterly unpalatable, but which their love interest will graciously be able to overlook - are telling on themselves more than they think.
Also, she's not like the other girls! She has interests which are actually very common amongst women!
[Transcript: Around her neck she wore a leather strap, hanging from which was a three-inch-long saltwater crocodile tooth: a gift from Bill Lynch. /end]
This is petty, but I feel like the tooth should have been mentioned first, or maybe Reilly should have chosen a different word than "strap". Every time I go back to this sentence I expect it to be about some antique binoculars or something and have to mentally rearrange my expectations in my head when I get to the tooth part
[Transcript: CJ's considerable success had not been reflected in her personal life. While Hamish had gone through a swathe of girlfriends over the years, CJ had not had many serious boyfriends, just the one in fact, Troy, and that had ended badly: immediately after the incident that had destroyed her face. Only Hamish had stayed by her side, her ever-loyal brother. /end]
We're on page 12. Since this book began we've learned about two mentors CJ has had who looked after her, begged her not to leave her position at the university after the accident that gave her the scars, and who generally looked after her and recommended her for good positions. But yeah no one stayed by her not at all no-siree-bob
Also contrasting her brother with her boyfriend there strikes me as pretty dang weird
[Transcript: a series of lines from the book combined into one image:
But the head didn't move. It was eerily still.
It growled. A deep angry sound.
Once a renowned herpetologist–a reptile expert–these (the rest is cut off)
She had always been a good observer, a close watcher of things. It (the rest is cut off) /end]
At the very least, Reilly can be content knowing his book has some value as a dictionary, provided you only want to know random words in no semblance of alphabetical order
#solaris reads the great zoo of china#long post#more to be added tomorrow theres just SO MUCH IN THE FIRST FIFTY PAGES#and then i can actualky continue reading it

“Myths arise from actual events, remarkable events that get talked about precisely because they are remarkable and which then get embellished in the retelling. This does not change the fact that the original event actually happened." 🐉✨🐉✨🐉 Matthew Reilly’s novel The Great Zoo of China has often been described to me as ‘Jurassic Park on crack but with dragons.’ And now that I’ve finally read it, I can totally understand and appreciate why. I’ve always been a fan of books that take the time to include maps, and this book is no different! Throughout the book we also get several different maps, graphs and diagrams to help us understand what the characters are seeing, and I really liked that Reilly added this in. Over the course of these 515 pages, we follow Cassandra Jane “CJ” Cameron and her brother Hamish as they arrive in China and as things steadily go from bad to worse. While most of the novel is focused on CJ, there are parts of the novel where we see what Hamish is up to, and what’s going on where he is concerned. While I didn’t really think much of the people in this story, I adored the dragons! They were amazing. Reilly has done an incredible amount of research into reptiles and dinosaurs to bring this book to life. While at times the book seemed far fetched, and the conclusion was a bit lacklustre, it was a gripping read and I flew through it in a couple of hours. Reilly’s writing style makes it easy to understand what’s going on without being info-dumpy, and it sucks you in. If you’re a fan of dinosaurs, dragons or crocodiles/alligators, and like face paced action, I’d recommend this book to you. 🐉✨🐉✨🐉 The Great Zoo of China is book 47 for 2020. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #booklover #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2020 #bookquote #thegreatzooofchina #matthewreilly #thegreatzooofchinabymatthewreilley #bookwithamap #dragonsanddinosaurs #booksover500pages https://www.instagram.com/p/B_cibiJA1Dr/?igshid=17q2ub4xvxx0n
