There are many horrible sights in the multiverse. Somehow, though, to a soul attuned to the subtle rhythms of a library, there are few worse sights than a hole where a book ought to be. - Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!

Writing disabled characters as a disabled person is both liberating and painful. Having those experiences of chronic pain makes it easier for me to describe how my MC feels about his pain. For example, how it feels like burning knives are stabbed into his leg over and over. Or how you’ll push yourself to do something, you know very well you don’t have the energy to do. Pulling from these experiences has been more liberating than I thought. It has helped me deal with some of the trauma, and also come into this acceptance that I’m still as badass as anyone else. Which is why I think writing disabled characters is just as important as writing queer characters. Everyone deserves to feel themselves connected with a character, and to live vicariously through them. This it what fiction is made for, to have these stories where our minds can run free.
I’ve read both books with queer characters where their feelings of their sexuality have resonated with me, and make me cry over the feeling of being seen. And I’ve read books with disabled characters and had the same feeling. This is why it’s so important to have representation. To have queer, disabled and/or POC in rom-coms, fantasy, sci-fi and thrillers. To show that a character that looks like you, has the same feeling as you can be a badass hero. Which is what I want to do with “Ruins of Dawn”, yes I just name dropped the new and improved title for my WIP. I want to show that a morally gray character, who has nerve pain and limps, still can kick ass. That neither his disability nor sexuality defines who he is as a person, or if he can save the world. He’s Ed Johnston, the world’s most powerful super.

When circumstances force you to some sort of distress, quickly return to yourself. Do not stay out of rhythm for longer than you must: you will master the harmony the more by constantly going back to it. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Writing with brain fog is both the easiest and the most difficult I’ve ever done. In one hand, it makes it very easy not to over think every single detail you’ve written before and just write into the dark or follow the planning without a struggle. Or it makes you doubt everything, as you don’t remember if this specific quote is from a book, movie you’ve seen or if it’s something you’ve actually written yourself and then don’t know if you’re accidentally plagiarizing something or just your own work. But how do I actually write and make my stories come to life? Well, it begins with writing enough key details in my idea document on my phone. It could be anything from X meets Y to complete scenes with dialog on 1k words or more. If I use specific acronyms for a specific book or idea-thingy, I try to scribble that down too so I’ll have an easier time searching in my too long document. But other than that I haven’t adapted my writing too much since my brain fog got worse, expect from maybe just focusing on one manuscript at the time and not jump between stories too much to keep my head focused on said story. Also, it makes it easier when having different voices in different documents and not feel totally like a fish out of water. Definitely don’t recommend jumping between a dark romance thriller to an angsty rom-com😂 Been there, done that.

Wrap Up Agosto 2023
Tumblr media
