Ive been watching Frankenstein movies again (I think I'm gonna have to make some kind of something about it, but I also have never made a video for the internet before so... To be determined?)
Anyways- I have a new recommendation for Frankenstein nerds with time on their hands! And I haven't seen much about it?? Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but even the 1994 Kenneth Branagh version has something of an audience, and I think this one deserves at least that amount of attention.
Drumroll please!!
"Frankenstein" 2004, Directed by Kevin Connor
Now I think the reason this one is so unwatched is because it's actually a TV movie broken into two "episodes". The whole thing is about 3 hours long. And weirdly enough, aired on Hallmark??? But guys it's like. Really really good. Like, REALLY really good.
Some highlights for me personally include:
Henry Clerval! He's here! He's jolly! He's a little bit of a menace! Genuinely though he has a wonderful sense of charm and charisma to him, which works really well against the naturally more serious and dramatic Victor. Plus he's a history nerd with a bad relationship with his dad who doesn't want him to go to college. So naturally he hops on Victor's carriage mid-ride to Ingolstadt. What a guy
Elizabeth! Her relationship with Victor feels natural, but she also feels like her own person. Also they don't frame it like they're siblings (looking at you Kenneth). It feels more like they're childhood sweethearts who happen to live together, there's never a point where they refer to each other as siblings, there was never an intention from the parents to make them siblings, it just feels way less icky than many other adaptations. (It's still kinda weird though just on principle) I think she could've been explored more but she's fun when she's on screen. She paints, she jokes around, she has goals and expectations, I like her.
The portrayal of Victor is one of the most successfully sympathetic I've ever seen. It is very very easy to make Victor an asshole. Which he is, but it's easy to make him the wrong kind of asshole. Petty and vindictive, eager to run away from responsibility and denying the consequences of his actions. That's not him here. It's more that he's overwhelmed. He's completely over his own head. There's a lot of emphasis put on the fact that Victor is mentally unwell after his experiments. He's completely broken himself down, the minute the lightning thing doesn't work he flies into a rage. And then when the Creature starts breathing, he sees it for a few seconds and then blacks out. As far as he knows, he hallucinated the thing getting up (and he continues to experience paranoid hallucinations throughout the story, it's not a one time assumption). He still abandons the Creature, but it's not because he hates it, it's because he's exhausted and overwhelmed and literally doesn't know what's real. And that goes a long way in making the two feel equally sympathetic, which I think is very important.
This portrayal of The Creature is also one of the most successfully compelling I've ever seen! His performance is very gentle and quiet, which I think makes his rage and torment all the more intense. It's pretty common for the Creature to speak in a deep growl or low-toned monologues, but Luke Goss keeps his voice light and soft, which really really works. Plus I think his makeup and costuming is excellent. They stick way closer to the book description. He has a very pretty well-shaped face, but his skin is dry, grey, and cracked. His eyes are bright but sunken in shadow, and stitches poke out from just under his hairline. At the same time it's believable that Victor designed him to be beautiful, and that strangers would find him unnerving.
It's definitely too long, but it's a good time! You can also just find it on YouTube for free so, bonus points for that

[Frankenwolf, the Hallmark edition]
Merry Christmas from the doctor and his wolf ♥ May the next year be full of red dresses, couple adventures... and lots of love!
I just couldn't resist, Meghan Ory's new Hallmark movie has too many Red Riding Hood looks not to make a Christmas aesthetic ♥

Hallmark Halloween movies really need to be a thing. Let the goths and the spooky season lovers have their own ridiculous, syrupy, romances. There's so many options for them too? More than what Christmas offers plot wise? Why isn't this a thing?

Forty Days of Frankenstein, Day Six: Tonight, I present this excellent Frankenstein (or Frank N. Stein) sticker, part of a Halloween set, produced by Hallmark back in 1984 (40 years ago, yikes!). That's such a weird thought. I was a newly minted 18-year-old that Halloween, and I can just barely imagine how I would have felt looking at 40-year-old Halloween decorations from 1944 (I can just barely imagine because my grandmother had some decorations, not many, that were that vintage). Anyhow, there's lots to like about this little sticker. The Monster's shirt is in a festive jack-o-lantern pattern. He has the by-this-point common forehead electrode variant, and yellow skin instead of the more common green. He has a pet spider. His tombstone sports an electric-themed joke, one of the four or five go-to's for Frankenstein. All in all, a fine Frankenstein. I'll also include a picture of the whole set, for context.

That Hallmark adaptation was NOT good, I do NOT understand the hype, it was so far from accurate, please... WHY WERE AGATHA AND FELIX RELATED???? They also just fucking... Forgot the point of the novel. I HATE it. The creature is hated, not because he's ugly, THEY DON'T EVEN mention his appearance; the reason he's hated is just BASIC LOGIC??? When the townspeople chase him down, it's not that he's a monster, but because he stole. When Agatha and Felix freak out, it's not because he's a monster, but because he's a strange man in a random person's house with a blind man and a CHILD. I FUCKING HATE THAT HALLMARK ADAPTATION. The musical was just boring, idk...
Frankenstein, have good adaptations challenge, go!!!
when you find a good, book-accurate frankenstein adaptation but it was made in post-2001 america so they erase the arabic woman from the plot despite her literally being the very reason the creature knows how to speak, read and write

In fanon, Jason Todd is often characterised as this big literature buff, more so than he ever is really in the comics. But can we talk about the number of literary parallels (intentionally or unintentionally) there are in his character...
(humour me, I'm also a big literature buff)
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen Lovers, in spite of their initial contempt, overcome biases and their own prejudices, disregarding of their differing social backgrounds. This is known to be Jason's favourite novel. Needless to say, Jason coming from abject poverty being adopted by billionaire Bruce Wayne definitely plays into this, and Jason's attitude towards defending Crime Alley and the particularly vulnerable in society.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley A Creature is brought back to life and shunned by his creator, has to learn how to survive in a new world that never planned for its existence and thus turns to violence to seek vengeance on its creator by systemically hurting those in his life - sound familiar? It's an almost piece for piece recollection of Jason's return from death and his feelings and actions towards Bruce, whom he deems to be responsible.
Crime & Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky A former student begins to believe that crimes such as murder can be committed for the greater good of society, commits said crimes and is forced to live with the psychological and literal consequences. The idea of 'killing for the greater good' is a hallmark of Jason's, and the crux of his entire character's ethics, especially his relationship with Bruce post-resurrection - not to mention the psychological torment he experiences.
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka The transformation of a man into an insect, and the way this isolates him from the rest of humanity, how his identity is changed and the psychological impact this has on him. This is most akin to Jason's resurrection and the feelings that come as a result - how he becomes something entirely different to who he was before very suddenly, grappling with his place and who he is in a world that didn't plan on having him back.
Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens A novel about an orphaned, impoverished child who encounters an Artful Dodger and ultimately joins a criminal outfit who try and recruit him into their agenda, although he ultimately disagrees and flees. Although this isn't beat for beat Jason's story (as he ultimately ends up as the more criminal of the bunch), there are definitely parallels between Jason's experience with being taken into the role of Robin but disagreeing with Bruce's ethos as he evolves.
Cain & Abel (not a novel, I am aware) Two brothers make sacrifices to God to show their gratitude. Cain, the elder, is snubbed where Abel, the younger, is accepted. Cain goes on to kill Abel out of jealousy and become the first murderer. I know this isn't necessarily literary, but the parallels between Jason's attack of Tim when he returns to Gotham as Redhood are significant. Jason feels enraged at Bruce's replacement of him after he, ultimately, gave his life for the cause - his attack on Tim is one of jealousy and rage.

Have you ever watched the 2004 Hallmark Frankenstein movie? If not I'd highly recommend it, some changes are present but overall it's very faithful to the book and generally well-written and well-acted
I have and honestly for a made for TV hallmark movie from the mid 2000's it's surprisingly decent. probably the most faithful adaptation I've seen yet. I do wish the creature had been a bit more gnarly looking. Can't complain too much as they did stick pretty close to how he's described in the book and I can see his resemblance to some of the early illustrations.
There are some shots where he looks alright and the makeup manages to be serviceable uncanny but there are several where he kind of just looks like...some dude. He doesn't even have the 8 ft tall thing going for him so it feels weird that people are so afraid of him.

I mean look at him, this is the most puppy dog version of the creature I've ever seen in my life. I still like him though, the actor does a good job.
