i had a very sad au idea. where gideon gets off the ninth and joins the cohort. one of the commanding officers realizes that gideon shares a name with a lyctor and looks like Wake. cue jod finding out gideon exists and kiriona 2.0 happens (buts Worse)
I love this AU, (and really any version of "Gideon manages to escape to the Cohort and her dad finds out she exists,") though I have to admit I'm not quite understanding your vision. I can't see what makes it all that sad, or Worse than canon.
The way I'm seeing it, this Gideon flipped the Ninth the double-bird then got clotheslined into being a Prince, all with Harrow still safe at home to have her snooty little nose rubbed in it. Gideon will be able to write her a letter saying:
"Addressing Her Ghastliness the Lady Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House serving the Emperor Undying: Hey, asswipe, remember when we were kids and you said my other parent wasn't important? Guess a-fucking-gain, loser! Signed, Crown Prince Kiriona Gaia the First, First Lieutenant of the Cohort, Heir to the First House, only daughter to the Emperor Divine (formerly known to you as Gideon Nav, not that you ever called me by it. Suck on that, creepozoid) p.s. Chill out, I haven't told my dad anything that would embarrass the Ninth, and I won't unless you give me reason to. p.p.s. The Emperor send his regards to your parents! :)"
And she'll still be alive to feel her heart race as she pictures the face Harrow will make after breaking open the seal on this very important missive from the First House to read it.

A quick skim through the BBC!Ghosts tag tells me that no one has spent too much time trying to decode the Captain’s service ribbons. Lucky you, I did!
The badge on his jacket lapels say that he was in the royal artillery
1939 to 1945 Star: This is awarded to anyone who completed operational service overseas between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945 for at least 180 days.
France and Germany Star: Awarded for at least 1 day of operational service in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands or Germany between 6 June 1944 and 8 May 1945.
Defence Medal: Awarded for non-operational service (like training bases, for example) in the UK or overseas. A minimum of 3 years service in either the UK (3 Sep 1939 and 8 May 1945) or in the Home Guard (14 May 1940 and 31 Dec 1944) are required; if stationed overseas, 1 year between 3 Sep 1939 and 2 Sep 1945.
War Medal 1939 to 1945: Awarded to all full time personnel of the armed forces who served at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945, no matter where. In Europe, WWII ended in May 1945; this medal was instituted in August 1945.
He doesn’t wear any other clasp, so he didn’t fight in the Battle for Britain or the Battle of the Atlantic (makes sense, those were RAF and Navy stuff mostly). The Africa Star was awarded for a minimum of one day of operational service in North Africa, the Arctic Star was awarded for any amount of time spent fighting in that campaign, and the Pacific, Burma, and Italy Stars were awarded upon entry into an operational area. He was awarded none of these medals, which means he only fought the France and Germany campaign.
He only wears WWII medals, which means he didn’t fight in WWI (it was unlikely he would have anyway, tbh, 41 was the the maximum age to fight in WWII, which would have made him 18 in 1916). The order I’ve written them out in (from top to bottom) is the order they should go left to right. For some reason, the Captain is wearing the ribbon band upside down. That’s a very huge big no good no-no. At first I assumed if was a mistake by the costume people, but it’s been three seasons and that hasn’t been fixed yet so I have to conclude it’s intentional. It could be some kind of BBC directive (idk, “non-army personnel has to wear the uniform in a certain way or it’s an insult to the queen” or some other silly nonsense) or it could be a genuine mistake the Captain made before dying, in which case I assume he’s spent sixty years being massively bothered by this. [ @lagoonnebula6523 said that the director of series 1 and 2 hinted that the reason for this mistake would be revealed in a future series, which I think points to an in universe explanation. Thank you for the info, this is super cool to know!] [Small aside, but I remember googling why the ribbons would be worn upside down and what i found was neat but probably unrelated. Check the tags if you’re interested]
I believe he’s in a service dress, which basically means he was at some kind of event when he died. He’s not in the army equivalent of the white tie, so we’re not talking about something too fancy. Maybe some sort of minor party?
So yeah, dude died after the war ended, and considering he seems used to saying “king” instead of “queen” I feel like he died either before Elizabeth was crowned or just after, so somewhere between August 1945 and around 1953-55
#bbc ghosts#ghosts bbc#bbc!ghosts#long story short; dude fought at least half a year in belgium and france#Could have been involved with d-day or he could have arrived later#he also doesn't have a Korea medal (the requirement for it is at least one day in korea if you're army)#that war started in 1950 and was established in 1951#that could mean he died before that war begun... but i also have no fucking clue how the army works#like idk maybe they only sent six pople who drew the short stick for that one and he wasn't one of them#and i mean his knees are clearly in a bad way so maybe he was alive and just couldn't go#he could also have been too old (read: over 41) for that one#Okay now re: what i found out when i googled why a ribbon band would be worn upside down#I found were a couple of articles about some army guy wearing the ribbon band upside down by mistake and apologizing for it#(i seem to remember he was american but still i think the contriteness would be the same)#and the historical novel “The Reverse of the Medal” by Patrick O’Brian#remember the Master and Commander movie? It comes from a series of books the reverse of the medal is from#if you don't remember it: historical novels set in 1800 following a Navy officer and his friend#in the Reverse of the Medial a character goes through cashiering#(basically a ritual of shame in which you're dishonourably discharged)#the title is a reference to that and also probably to the flying the union jack upside down#flying the union jack upside down is a big no no but it's sometimes done (generally by people in the forces)#to signal distress#the title is obviously also a reference to the turn of phrase 'opposite side of the medal'#is this in any way relevant to the Captain? Probably not!

hella can u give me a visual description of some of ur ocs for toab i need to draw them
anon is facing the classic dilemma of taob readers since the dawn of time (august 2020) and for once im gonna actually do something about it so i present unto you, artists of tumblr dot com, an exhaustive rundown of taob oc descriptions:
kanut: i feel like kanut is one whose appearance is pretty solidified now. he has white hair that falls down to the base of his back that he typically pulls back into a half-knot, with a short white beard. go grandpa go. he's described as generally having a 'rough' 'sea-faring' apperance bc he's one of those people that really doesnt give a fuck about appearance especially when it has nothing to do with his healing, so while he wears the typical water tribe clothing, he'll usually have his sleeves rolled up or stains on his tunic etc. he has blue eyes and isn't very muscled because he stays out of all combat due to being the healer, but he's one of the taller tribesmen. he has those scars on his hands that cover his palms and knuckles and quite sharp features.
chena: COLOSSAL freak of a man. like i wanted him to be comically large seeing as i was working with a kids show universe where shit like that happens, so zuko literally just stands past this man's ELBOW. fucking giganotosaurus rex. he's incredibly broad and muscled as well as just tall, very thick-necked and beefy face. like it's v important to me that chena's muscle isn't the streamlined, airbrushed kind; he's a total beefcake. he's COVERED in scars like he has a specific slit in his eyebrow that needs to be mentioned bc ZUKO GAVE IT HIM but aside that honestly go ham with the scars. his eyes are grey but more of a blueish grey, and he has dark brown hair that he does quite detailed braids in to pull back out of his face and fall down his back.
tomkin: he's v skinny/lanky and trying very hard to look bigger than he is. he wears his dark brown hair in a warrior's wolf tail and effectively looks like an older, less-burdened-by-The-Horrors version of sokka. he does tend to style the braid part of his wolftail to come out of his hair a little though instead of lying flat bc he thinks it makes him look taller (it doesn't). his eyes are a very light blue.
nanook: he has shoulder-length hair that's a light brown colour but ive realised some people mean 'nearly blonde' when they say light brown whereas i just meant 'not nearly black' like a lot of the other warriors. he wears a bead on one of the front strands and it usually falls so that it's sitting by his jaw. nanook is the tallest of the tom nook & ko trio and he's pretty toned but more in a 'has actually grown into himself' kind of way than a 'seasoned warrior' kind of way. he has a round face and generally looks very steady and calm. he has a birthmark on his hand (between his thumb and forefinger) that looks like a wave and he wears ivory bracelets on each wrist.
aput: IDC WHAT YOU DO WITH APUT BUT KNOW HE'S HOT. HE IS THE FIT ONE OF THE SWT. HE'S THEIR CASANOVA. MAKE HIM ATTRACTIVE OR DIE BY MY BLADE. he has black hair that falls to around shoulder length and he doesnt usually style it in any way, and he's the second burliest in the group. he's got a much more lean muscle than chena and it makes him quicker, so fighting-wise those two are almost evenly matched (chena just wins out though. pure aggression will get you everywhere). aput has a sharp jaw and deep blue eyes
tulok: he's the smallest of the adults and has brown hair that falls to the middle of his back. he usually just braided it back or wore it in a style very similar to korra's with the blue ribbons, but since shuhon prison he's been wearing it in an earth kingdom braid. he's easily the most put together of the group bc he has a real thing for keeping clean and tidy, so his clothes are always pristine and his personal grooming is always up to date.
tovah: she's incredibly tall and lithe with sleek, black hair that falls to her hips that she wears in a PERFECT ponytail like not a HAIR out of place. she's all sharp angles and narrowed green eyes and she tends to wear earth kingdom uniform. her skin is tanned and she doesn't visibly carry any weapons on her unless she's undercover in the army and they're military-issued.
some references from beautiful fanart i have the absolute pleasure of being gifted! i wish i could put every bit of art ever made for my ocs here but im going mainly off whose showed up first when going through the tag and also any that i think just Really Captured how i personally see the character in my mind:
this portrait of kanut by @pyro-bee
atla-style tovah by @lordrei
tom nook (+ zuko) by @gloomybirdie
tovah elle woods supremacy by @herebutnotpresent
another pyro-bee kanut by @pyro-bee
tovah character sheet by @herebutnotpresent (this one is SUPER helpful)
and tons more under the 'taob art' tag if it helps!

Alpha-17 taking the little command batch on a ‘field trip’ down the hall to the alpha barracks because he forgot something important there:
“Don’t touch anything, don’t look at anything, don’t talk to anyone, stay with the group at all times, you say nothing to no one except for ‘yes sir, no sir, please and thank you’, don’t eat or drink anything, cover your mouth with your elbow when you sneeze and cough, walk single file, use the bathroom before we leave, if you need something raise your hand, don’t ask questions, no screaming, no laughing, no staring, no crying, no being rude, and absolutely no tomfoolery. Do I make myself crystal clear?”
The command batch: “Sir, yes sir!”
They did in fact, not adhere to any of those rules. What are rules to a toddler but mere guidelines anyway? The other alphas in the barracks are NOT helping either, and instead encouraged their behavior.

The more I learn about Roshan, the more I'm interested in her story: she's a 50-year-old former Persian slave who is now a Hidden Ones Mentor (x). And now Shohreh Aghdashloo teases us with this, please let me play as her even just for a bit.

Why GW!Claude Isn't Interesting: A Checklist
got long lmao under the cut it goes (edit: FOR REAL THIS TIME WHOOPS LMAO)
-> Why is it uninteresting for GW!Claude to be someone who manipulates those around him into thinking he's doing good things as he does actions that are inarguably evil?
Because that's just Edelgard.
-> Why is it uninteresting for GW!Claude to be someone who grew up in a country known to want to expand its power through violent conquest, and who is thusly influenced to do the same himself because of that?
Because that's just Edelgard.
-> Why is it uninteresting for GW!Claude to be someone whose actions are meant to be surprising because he ends up being just as bad and manipulative and dangerous as his initial appearance made him out to be?
Because that's just Hubert.
-> Why is it uninteresting for GW!Claude to be completely uninterested in looking into the Church's supposed crimes and letting his (at this point) willful ignorance drive him to extremely violent acts?
Because that's just Edelgard.
-> Are GW!Claude's actions the result of a character being gradually driven to become the very thing they hate, through a steady degradation of their core morals and values?
No. GW!Claude very suddenly drops any core aspects of his character so that he is willing to do what he does. The callout of his route (sacrificing Randolph) is set before he does something infinitely worse with little to no reaction from his allies whatsoever (invading the Kingdom, Sreng), erasing any "steady degradation" of morals as the decline in them is not treated properly.
-> Are GW!Claude's actions the result of desperation - or rather, is that possibility properly shown off in his route?
No. GW!Claude unquestionably holds his own amazingly well against the Empire, especially considering the general nature of the Alliance that made it exceptionally weak in a military campaign. Even when forced to retreat from the battle with Bergliez - which was going well before the retreat, even with Jeralt’s Mercenaries there - due to Shahid, Claude not only handles Shahid’s invasion to near perfection, but he left the battle with Bergliez in such a way that him pursuing Claude would've ultimately hurt him more than it was worth (as it would destroy the fields of the breadbasket of the Empire/Fodlan) - meaning, the Empire couldn’t even make use of the forced retreat without making things ultimately worse for themselves. The narrative tries to say that Claude was barely holding his own against the Empire, but the actual story events fail to properly portray that as Claude has success after success fighting against them and as the Empire never once succeeds (without it quite literally being part of Claude’s plan for them to, in any case).
-> Are GW!Claude's actions the result of (properly portrayed) heroism?
No. Not only are his actions fundamentally villainous, not only are the justifications for doing them faulty at best, but he ultimately doesn't even accomplish what he set out to do, making them completely pointless and unnecessary. At best, any attempt to portray him as heroic fail due to moral bankruptcy and general incompetence.
-> Are GW!Claude's actions the result of (intentional) villainy?
No. The narrative portrays GW!Claude as only doing what he feels he must, with his friends blindly placing their faith in him and thus narratively encouraging his decisions. The developers also stated that they wanted Claude to be seen as someone who encompasses noble leadership and whose story is heart-touching - where, despite his "harsh actions" in the name of his ambition, his allies still support him. Both inside and outside of the game, GW!Claude is not meant to be seen as a villain, despite his villainous behavior and actions.
-> Is him facing off against Rhea as his final boss given any proper build up in his route?
No. Through all of Chapters 4-8 (as in Part 1 of GW as an individual route, during the war phase) Claude's thoughts and feelings towards the Church are not just completely ignored, they are flat out unstated in its entirety; he mentions nothing of the Church on a personal level, and in fact only mentions it in any capacity a handful of times. Every chapter he states that is it specifically and only the Empire (+ Shahid, once) that he is fighting, and that is because it is specifically and only the Empire (+ Shahid, once) that is fighting the Alliance. To say that it is Rhea that ends up becoming the final boss of his route and not either the Empire or Almyra, it is nonsensical that for the entirety of Part 1 Rhea is never mentioned to be any sort of threat to Claude; if Claude truly always thought of her as so dangerous as to need to be killed, and to be killed by any means necessary, it obviously makes more sense for him to bring it up at any point of his route beforehand, but he does not.
-> So in a nutshell, why is GW!Claude uninteresting?
When he is not being a blatant copy of Edelgard (with a sprinkle of Hubert), GW!Claude's actions are a jumbled mess, both thematically and practically. His complete 180 in drives from wanting to take down the invading Empire to wanting to kill the doing-nothing-wrong Rhea is given no justifications deeper than "someone told Claude that Rhea was Bad," and is thus not given any more effort than that to justify his horrendous actions. These horrendous actions, which we the player are told is part of a "heart-touching" story of a man who ruthlessly and cruelly takes advantage of a border conflict to weaken an already struggling Kingdom so that he may more easily invade it, even though he personally knows the residual horrors that border conflicts can inflict on the people on both sides. The ramifications of his actions are not treated with the correct weight, as his sacrifice of an Imperial general is treated as narratively worse than his invasion of a struggling Kingdom and his worsening of a border conflict for his own gain. This of course erases any possibility for the player to truly feel genuinely culpable as a result of the story wishing for them to feel that way, as priority is clearly given to named characters over nameless concepts - you know Randolph, big brother of the little girl Fleche, and you should feel more bad for him than "the people of Faerghus," who are little more than lines of dialogue on the screen. Knowing of this prioritization saps the story of any true meaning behind it, as it clearly only wants the player to care about individual characters and not all who are truly affected by characters' actions. After all, it's not Claude's invasion of Faerghus itself that can cause Judith to die, nor is it him tampering with Sreng: it is specifically Claude sacrificing Randolph that is ultimately the catalyst of Judith's (potential) death. Narratively speaking, sacrificing Randolph is worse than causing the death of countless innocents in the name of a pointless invasion, that in itself is in the name of a pointless hunt for Rhea's death. GW!Claude is uninteresting because he has no cohesion, no logic, nothing that connects his actions to any rational sense - both referring to strictly 3Hopes and especially when factoring in his 3H counterpart. GW!Claude is uninteresting because he isn't a villain, as both the story and writers don't view him that way, and yet he fails to be a hero due to both his completely amoral actions and the story itself being uncaring of all GW!Claude is able to accomplish with his meager resources in Part 1; he thus falls into an area in which his heroic actions (keeping out the Empire as well as he does) aren't given the credit they're due and his villainous actions (invading the Kingdom, Sreng, the killing of Rhea) aren't given the weight they deserve. GW!Claude is uninteresting because, most damningly, he is woefully inconsistent; he's at the complete whim of the plot, changing on the drop of a hat when it calls for him to. While 3H!Claude was completely underutilized, he was still consistent and whose character makes sense given his circumstances, and he also holds a unique place in the cast with his personality, drives, ambitions, beliefs and ideals, actions, etc.. None of which can be similarly said for GW!Claude, hence his complete and utter uninteresting appeal as a character
