so there was this girl who I thought was so cool in high school. My first three years I would see her around school and was like omg please look at me please talk to me notice me befriend me see me. we had no classes together, but sophomore year I had English class with one of her friends. Paired for a project and I found out we had a lot in common. We watched the same shows and listened to the same music, but never became more than good classmates.

I remember sitting near her and her friends at lunch and hoping to god someone brought me into their conversation because I wanted to be her friend so bad, her specifically, but nope! I was so painful awkward that I ended up eating my lunch either all alone or at the office with the front desk lady I befriended freshman year.

but senior year the planets aligned and we happed to both sign up for the same elective literature class! SCORE! Now all I had to do was talk to her…

the first weeks I would do nothing but stare at her from across the room. Her cool round wired glasses, her freckles, her earrings! The books she carried. Her big school sweater. your girl was obsessed.

I would leave my books on top of my desk hoping she would walk by, notice them and start a conversation with me. I would linger after class so we would 'accidentally' bump into each other at the door. Nada. So one day I just summoned all my courage and told her I really liked her earrings.

I bumped into her at the door after class and stopped her before she could head down the hallway in the opposite direction. She said thanks and smiled and told me where she got them from. A small Etsy shop that sells horror movie themed jewelry. So fucking cool.

I nodded and had half a mind to wave goodbye to her before running away. I locked myself in the bathroom and fist bumped the air, trying to calm my nerves before heading to math class.

Turns out she's shyer than me! She was always the last to leave the classroom so I would pack my things as slowly as possible so we could walk out together. Everyday she would wear new earrings and every day I would catch her outside the classroom door and compliment them.

Short three sentence conversation expanded slowly and I ended up walking her to her next class, walking as slow as possible so we could have as much time together as possible, and then I would run back up to the third floor to get to my class on time.

After a while, I found her Snapchat under "people you may know" and requested her. Then promptly threw my phone down to my sister's bottom bunk and refused to look at it for the rest of the night.

She accepted my request.

Months passed and she invited me to her graduation party. Problem was that she lived in the north side of the city half an hour away from where I lived in the Southside. No way my parents were going to drive me out there just to hang out with a girl, it didn't matter that I've been dying to hang out with since I was 15.

I remember being heart broken and thinking she wouldn't even want to be my friend anymore. What if we weren't even friends to begin with? What if it was just a pitty invite?

She kept texting me. Said it was fine I couldn't make it and kept texting me as if nothing changed. It took me two more years to build up the courage to ask her for her TikTok and now we send each other TikToks almost everyday. I just found out we have so much more in common than I ever thought in high school. We could have been friends since freshman year!!!!

But it's fine. Because this is fine. I get to be her friend now! And it's 1:53 am and I'm texting her and trying to find a supper chill way to ask for her number or her Instagram because the worst she can do is say no but my brain thinks maybe she will block me and tell me I'm weird and she doesn't like me and oh
