In Defense of Shinji/Rei

Out of all the pairings in the Evangelion fandom, Shinji/Rei is one of the most controversial and least popular, especially here on tumblr. It did have some popularity at one point but that has died down in favor of Kawoshin and Asurei. It’s a ship that I, and many others, feel is often mischaracterized and dismissed due to its more controversial elements but one that is honestly very emotional and deserves less hate in my opinion, as do it’s shippers who people also have a misguided view of. Fandom in general has become more moralistic and puritanical in recent years. It’s like no one learned a thing from the SU fandom discourse where people were bullied or called homophobic for liking a certain pairing over the other.

Argument 1: she’s his mother/sister

The most common criticism of the pairing is that it’s incest and that their relationship is that of a brother-sister or mother-son. First, Rei’s whole arc in the show is that she’s not just a clone or copy of Yui or Lilith. She’s her own person with her own desires which is why her loyalty to Gendo wanes as she becomes more of an individual. Her DNA also isn’t that similar to Shinji and only a small amount of Yui’s was used. The rest was affected by Lilith hence the differences in their appearance. So there is a little bit of blood relation but it’s not on the same level of say Bwen or Pinecest. Incest is terrible because it’s a betrayal of family trust and abuse but Shinji and Rei met as teens and were not raised as siblings, nor did he know of her origin until Ritsuko explained it.

I’ve also seen the argument that their bond is sibling-like or Shinji views her as a Madonna/mother figure. Anno has stated that he intended there to be a “love triangle” with the pilot trio and show’s proposal described Rei as having “learned about feelings when she fell in love”. While that info comes from Reddit and may not be reliable, it does challenge the idea that there was no intention for their dynamic to be romantic.

Next, antis really take that elevator scene out of context where Shinji was complimenting her on being like a mom while ignoring him telling her she’d make a good housewife. The rebuilds and manga make their connection more blatant but it was always there. Misato, Toji and Kensuke all tease Shinji about his crush and the two act as friends after warming up despite their icy first interactions. There may be some maternal aspects to it but it’s rather simplistic to dumb their bond down to a family connection. It seems antis argue that they’re siblings because the romantic implications are uncomfortable and antis don’t want to admit that they do have feelings for each other.

Argument 2: it’s misogynistic and queer erasure

Okay, this is a less common argument against it but one I’ve seen from popular Eva analysis writers that view Kawoshin as the only valid pairing for Shinji. I’ve seen it used against Asushin and Marishin too. This goes hand and hand with the idea that Shinji views Rei as a Madonna and is misogynistic. I have a lot of thoughts about the “Shinji is an incel misogynist and Asuka did nothing wrong” discourse but that’s for another day. He’s not a perfect uwu soft boy but fans seem to base his entire characterization off the hospital scene in rather single issue Eva analyses that cherry-pick certain scenes or dialogue.

The argument that it’s queer erasure is one I’m starting to despise. Yes, there are homophobic dudebro fans who hate Kawoshin but not everyone who prefers a “straight” pairing is anti gay. Shinji could still be bisexual and be in a m/f relationship. I’ve also seen some ship him in a polycule with Rei and Kaworu. Plus, not everyone has to interpret the show or character the same way. The writers made it so people can view Kawoshin as romantic and Shinji as queer, but never demanded that be the only possible interpretation.

This kind reminds me of something I’ve occasionally seen in the Ben 10 fandom too. A few fans, not all of them, treating the wholesome gay ship as the only good pairing because of the problematic elements in the m/f ships or because they view the male protagonist as a misogynist. The “male character is sexist or a bad boyfriend so let’s make him gay” is also a fandom trope that kind of irritates me. Not every ship has be gay or a girlboss romance either.

Argument 3: they’re kids and you can’t ship them

This is one of the least common criticisms but one that I’ve occasionally encountered. First, they’re 14 which is around the time a lot of teens start dating. Second, romance =/= sex and child/teen characters can have romantic feelings for each other. Yes, ship wars over fictional kids can escalate but there’s nothing wrong with just liking a pairing. This post about Chihiro and Haku’s bond from Spirited Away kind of applies here too.

My thoughts: why do I love this pairing?

I first fell in love with this ship because I watched the rebuilds first on Amazon Prime and didn’t know the series was on Netflix because my account, embarrassingly, still has parental controls on it. I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea but I liked them. Shinji was a character I really connected to and so was Rei. Their relationship got me a bit emotional and the scene where Shinji attempts to save her had me on the edge of my seat, while the scene where Shinji accepts Rei Q got a tear out of me as did the apology scene in 3.0+1.0.

If I had to compare them to any other pairing, which I’ve done before, it would be Hodaka/Hina from Weathering with You which also is a bit divisive and a bit of a tearjerker. Ironically, EoE is one of Makoto Shinkai’s favorites and he considers Anno an inspiration. Everything from their bond to Hodaka’s character and Hina’s arc of a blue haired girl, blackish-blue in Hina’s case, that’s lived a difficult life and who’s only purpose is to be a sacrificial lamb, learning to pray for herself is a lot like Shinji/Rei, down the ending of WWY being a lot like that of 2.22. The scene where Hodaka gives Hina a promise ring is also a little like the “smile” moment from Episode 6/1.11.

Conclusion

In short, Shinji/Rei isn’t a bad pairing and is overhated and misrepresented by many in the fandom. It’s fine to dislike it or prefer another ship but one can do so without chomping at the bit to paint its shippers as homophobes, misogynists or people with incest fetishes or Oedipal complexes. Many of us like it because it’s one of the least toxic relationships in the series and is honestly a very powerful story. Are there some questionable elements in it? Sure, but you can like a ship even if it’s not up to golden moral standards and expecting every pairing to be unproblematic is ridiculous. Real life is much more grey than what moralistic fans claim.

The Monster Called 'Gawain'

In which we found Gawain a little too late.

It started with a curse on a knight who was far too proud—a hopeful life lesson for a man to be kinder.

He would find someone who cared for who he was, flaws and imperfections, enveloping him in a familiar warmth that would melt the frozen heart that had forgotten the boundless love he had.

He would find a place to belong after feeling lost. A new calling to be by another’s side, through darkness and light and every spectrum of hardships in between.

He would be at peace, lying beside his most trusted and beloved for years to come as the world continues to spin around them.

It sounded too good to be true—happy endings are only for fairy tales, after all. The blue skies that symbolise peace were nothing but a joke, a mockery of a man long abandoned by everyone around him.

There he was, flesh rotted and scarred where he pried off his bloodied iron prison, storming through the woods into nearby towns like a rabid animal, pupils dimmed after all hope left his soul years ago. He bares his teeth and screams out as the civilians run to safety.

A monster, they screamed.

He remembers the nights Morgause sat beside his bed, telling him stories of heroes that slay monsters and save the day. He remembers the days Lot would train him to protect people from these same monsters. He has had many experiences slaughtering said creatures as they near Dalmore.

Gawain, the exiled knight, knew the definition of a monster. Yet, somewhere down his journey to redemption, it would seem that he became that definition.

People would shy away and scurry off as he roams around looking for deeds to fulfil. People would run and hide when he was spotted coming into their town. People would beg for him to leave them alone, near crying on their knees because he was so overwhelming as a presence.

They looked so distressed, he didn’t know what he did wrong. Their request is for him to disappear? Does his existence cause this much pain for others?

Why won’t anyone look at him? Why wouldn’t anyone hear his cries?

He thought, at the very least, his sister would still be on his side, waiting for him to return to Dalmore. He would do all this so Florence knew that he was still her beloved brother and that he wasn’t a bad person.

He had tried hard to do good deeds. Whether or not he understood the meaning of kindness, he tried his best. It began as a chore but slowly turned into a genuine plea to be accepted, and over time, it became desperate, aggressive and frightening.

… what a cruel joke.

Somewhere down the line, he had uncovered the identity of the damned witch that put him in this mental spiral. He felt utterly betrayed, he cried for days. It was almost like no one wanted him around anymore, he was better off a corpse.

So he isolated himself in the mountains.

The times when he would skip and run through trees with Lamorak, dear Florence tailing behind as the three bantered. Three pairs of feet jumping around giggling before the Sun goes down. The memories he fondly kept in his heart corrupted since that day—he only recalls a boy whose face was crossed out, and a haze behind them, voices all muffled. He blocked them all out. 

He trekked the mountains alone in pure silence. Not even the beasts watching him in the distance would give him any company out of fear. He drags his feet as he enters a small cave with his makeshift bed of animal pelts he had acquired from hunting. Far away from people who had started to send out bounties to end his life once and for all.

He was hurting and no matter how much tears he wept at night in the cold, neither mother nor father came to hold him. Eventually, his eyes dried, bloodshot red to accompany the scarring around his face from where he ripped his mask off.

He rubbed his arm for warmth, draped in a cloak. He had broken down and torn off the armour from his body, which meant most of the skin on his torso was now gone. Now he really looked like a monster. Does that mean a hero would come and slay him?

Something twisted grew inside him from that revelation. He starts to pray for the day he will meet this hero—the only one left who will look at him. The pathetic thought enraged him, insulted that the thought of death by another person would put him at peace. 

He hated himself.

Standing in front of him was a skyfarer, eyes bright as the stars he would count while he sat on his father’s shoulders on their way back home. He charged at them with the intention to kill; that’s what monsters do, after all. Yet all they did was dodge and block his blows.

He saw it, the compassion and pity in their eyes. Every time he backs up to prepare for another attack, they try to call out to him.

“You’re Gawain, aren’t you?!”

“Wait! Just listen to me!”

“I don’t want to hurt you! I just want to help!”

Their words fell on deaf ears. He’s heard all these lies from her already, he refuses to believe that there was someone out there that actually wanted to help. He was in too deep that it hurt more to heal his heart than to continue down this endless madness. He was too afraid of trusting someone again, to put his guard down and give even a crumb of his heart away. His attacks became frantic, like a wounded animal trying to survive.

He watched them try, again and again, shouting in hopes that their words would reach him. He watched tears flow down their face as they became increasingly frustrated, knowing that if this battle continued, their other crewmates that were rushing to the scene would behead him on the spot.

“Gawain!”

He huffed, energy draining. His damaged flesh tore open from all the heavy blows he tried to deliver, blowing apart from the sheer intensity of his own strength. His vision was blurry but he saw the distress in the person’s face, trying their best to get closer to him. In his head, he thinks it was so that the hero could slay the monster once and for all. Their eyes grew wide, he saw them open their mouth to scream but he heard nothing but high-pitched ringing.

He didn’t notice he fell to the ground.

He didn’t notice the giant gash on his body that was spilling out blood like he was a waterfall.

He sees wings, six pairs of them, radiating light so blinding as it joins the side of his opponent, it was as if he was staring directly at the Sun. 

He felt warmth, for the first time in years. He watched them run over to his dying figure, holding onto him as their tears fell onto his face, begging him to stay awake. He watched them scream and scold the angel beside them in anger, ripping off their own sleeves to bandage his wound as if it weren’t fatal.

He hears his name being called repeatedly. It had been so long that he almost forgot. How could he have forgotten it?

Visions of three kids running around the mountains haunted him for one last time—faces clear as day, his dear friend and sister.

Where did everything go wrong?

Gawain didn’t know. Gawain didn’t have long to find out, either.

The last thought he had before he went cold was a new revelation. He wasn’t the monster in the story at all…

He was who the hero needed to save.

You haven't gotten a lot of Non Quirk questions in a while, so I wanted to send one that I think would be fun. What do you think would be the favorite anime/series of each 1-A Character? I know Tokoyami would be a Jujutsu Kaisen fan, but the rest I'm not sure.

Can I just say how much I enjoy questions like these? It's always really fun to get questions unrelated to Quirks, especially more light hearted, character focused questions like these. I appreciate you sending this in and encourage more non-Quirk related questions. That aside, I will expand this to include manga as well. There are some choices on here that I think are perfect, but I know that certain animes aren't the best adaptation.

Sato: Food Wars. Maybe Toriko if you want something more on brand with him. I would say more about it, but that would imply there is anything deeper to read into with Sato.

Koda: Pokémon. There really isn't anything complicated about this choice. Just a fun, lighthearted series with wonderous creatures under the main character's control.

Mineta: Without question, it's Kill La Kill. He's actually one of the few people who are able to read into it on a deeper level and what it's trying to say but nobody believes him.

Denki: I don't know, Seven Deadly Sins? Kaminari just seems like he would be the most basic, go with whatever's is the most popular kind of fan, never really commiting to anything for too long.

Tsuyu: I think she would be into cute and happy series. Something light and fun that puts a smile on your face and could enjoy with other people around. Think something like Spy x Family.

Sero: Maybe Steins' Gate? He's on the same level as Denki, but it's usually more along with critics are going with then general audiences and at least takes some time to think about it.

Ojiro: Pretty much any heavily technical fighting anime, like Hajime no Ippo, but has a special place in his heart for Dragon Ball Z. Who knew that a martial artist with a tail would hit a chord with Ojiro?

Hagakure: I think her being into Sailor Moon would make sense. Something fun and flashy. I could easily see her using her reflective powers to do the whole Moon Prisim Power thing.

Aoyama: I could see him being kind of anime snob, being more interested in really old animes like Revolutionary Girl Utena or Rose of Versailles. Just something really pretty looking for his Bishonen soul.

Mina: Again, another character like Denki, but instead of focusing on shonen, she's more into whatever is popular with rom coms or slice of life, like Don't Bully Me Nagatoro or Dress Up My Darling.

Jiro: I honestly see her being more pulled towards the soundtrack of an anime rather then it's content. Though I do think she'd be interested in Cowboy Bebop with it's general "cool" feeling to it.

Tokoyami: He certainly seems like the guy that would be into the whatever edgy anime flavor of the month. First Death Note, then Tokyo Ghoul, and most recently Jujutsu Kiasen.

Shoji: He'd be into the Berserk manga. Just one of that people that reads super mess up stuff and is one of the chilliest people around. The only time he gets angry is when you mention any of the adaptations.

Kirishima: His favorite would be Gurren Lagann and there is nothing you can do to change my mind. It's just too perfect. That being said, if you want to pick something more ongoing, I'd say Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for obvious reasons.

Uraraka: I think she'd be into One Piece. I'm not sure why exactly I picked that out, I just think that she would like it. Maybe it's the mix of good, light heart adventures, lots of action and heart renching movement that makes me think she'd like it.

Tenya: Pretty much anything related to Gundam. I could see him being into the mechanics of the robots and the amount of stragy involved in the fights. Out of all of them though, his favorite would be the objectively best Gundam series: G Gundam.

Bakugou: Bakugou is both sides of the deep Naruto fan coin. He's simultaneously the guy that's actually reading into it and understanding what's it's saying, but also the obnoxious dude bro that talks about it like it's the greatest manga ever without question.

Shoto: It was honestly really hard to think of anything for him. He just doesn't seem like the kind of that would be into it. I was tempted on Fire Force for a joke, but I like the choice of Fruits Basket better. I feel like the complications of family and bonds would speak to him.

Momo: I was tempted to go with Doctor Stone, but I had to go with Fullmetal Alchemist. She's definitely one of those people who slaves over all the little details and themes in whatever she is watch, her face glowing as she talks about Elric's character and journey.

Izuku: I really wanted to pick One Punch Man for obvious reasons, but I think he'd be more pulled towards Hunter x Hunter. I think he'd especially be interested in the power system that's one of the few in all of manga that doesn't have to do with whatever you're born with.

You squint as you look up  at the sun. You were finally on the surface. Finally! You couldn’t even believe it. Even after all the scary attacks from those gunman and Simon finding his own gunman, nothing could make you feel unhappy about finally coming up to the surface.

“Kamina!” You squeal in delight. You wrap your arms around him. “This is it!”

He laughs softly, “I know! We made it! It’s the surface I saw as a child.”

He intertwines his fingers with yours. There’s a deep look in his eyes and you have a hard time trying to decipher his mood. Then he grins his silly little grin and leans in to press his lips to yours. 

“We made it, baby! Nothing’s going to stop us now!”

Simon and Yoko look at you both like you’re two idiots. But you are two idiots in love. You giggle before kissing Kamina once more.

“I’ll always be your side. This is a whole new chapter in our life now, baby.”
