Worms are genuinely so fascinating in so much of what they do but how they procreate is so bizarre. Different sub-species vary in copulation in fascinatingly different ways. So all worms are pretty much hermaphrodites.
Earthworms hold onto each other with mucin-like slime that keeps them stuck together and then they kinda wiggle on top of each other and then EXUDE from the OUTSIDE of their skin sperm which is absorbed into the other worms skin and then the clitellum (the little ring thing along the outer skin of worms) moves down the worm and collects and absorbs it (the sperm) and then forms a little egg cocoon and its so interesting???
And then of course there are osedax worms which have detachable penises and they're so interesting. Around 50-100 little microscopic males live within the tubes of the female worms and they dont mature because they suck (boo)
but then epitoky worms after they sexually mature release their fertilized gametes through rapid disintegration (which sounds insanely cool but its actually cooler because they live in the water and just kinda spray out their gametes (in which i told my friend they "spray and pray" hence the tag)). But actually several species use the "spray and pray" technique!
Flat worms (one of my favorites) they fight to decide who will be the male partner (because worms are hermaphrodites) they do what is honest to god called "penis fencing" and they essentially stab each other with an extendable dagger thing (its hooked) and stab it into the other worms epidermis. These worms do not have any vaginal openings you see and so they must create one (hence the fencing) and because both worms have male sexual organs they fight each other to see who will hold the eggs (its called traumatic insemination which...ow :( ) but its actually evolutionary amazing (read advantageous) because every interaction leaves with eggs being made (which is of course the whole base of their species) and they're so cool because essentially all worms are just dead-beat dads who can't wait to pump and dump and scurry off into the dirt
so thats how worms have sex...basically...yeah

me refraining from going on a tirade about how "freeze" and "fawn" aren't parasympathetic nerve responses every time i see that poll
#speak friend and enter#to grossly oversimplify: the part of your brain responsible for fight or flight reactions thinks its still 10000 bce.#your parasympathetic nervous system doesn't know what 20th century social mores are. 'fawning' is not a fear response it's a social cue#when your brain believes you are in a life or death situation you will experience one of two urges: to fight back or to run. that's it#the urge to people please is not going to be called upon in a life threatening situation. that's not how that works#and don't even get me started on how people want to say 'oooh i always fawn im so smol and demure'#like. i hate to break it to you but you're an animal. animals don't survive by being smol and demure.#animals can and do rip each others faces off. you do possess the 'rip that guy's face off' instinct whether you like it or not.#sorry if that doesn't jive with the steven universe school of social psychology ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is like some deep jayjamjar4 lore shit but it's so funny to me that I became as mentally healthy and stable as I am now by my simple two step process:
1.) Go insane and completely lose yourself
2.) Get better
Truely the Turn It Off and Turn It Back On Again of solutions.
#obviously grossly oversimplified but it's still funny#shout out high school me for going through it so college me could be happy you poor child#op

It's not like I've ever seen anyone here have any filter for what political messages they reblog, people just see someone talk about a situation in a way that makes them feel like they know who the villain is and press reblog, without question or applying any prior knowledge to their interpretation, especially if it's something that doesn't affect them personally, and especially if it goes against what they think most people believe so they can stick it to the man and feel like they know better. It's not something new and I usually don't hold it against anyone, I'm definitely guilty of it myself, but man does it feel more pervasive than ever now that every 5th post is taking a very confident stance on a war they only know from news and social media, all saying the same thing, enraged that anyone would ever claim otherwise. And it never hit so close to home for me, it was always someone else's problem for me too, someone I didn't know, but this time I got to spend a day wondering if a loved one was still alive, this time I get to be careful in public so I don't get killed for someone else's crimes.
Can we just all (myself included) think a little more, do a little more research before we decide what nuance does or does not exist? I promise you that you're not obligated to post about everything, you're not obligated to have an opinion on everything, and I promise you are going to be wrong sometimes.

What I like about this more than anything is that Juni Ba clearly KNOWS THAT THE LoA IS NOT JUST A FUCKING CULT! They are eco-terrorists first and foremost. It was formed by a man who has witnessed how humans ravage the earth and decided that the only solution was drastic population reduction (similar to how Poison Ivy is sometimes written). Their goal is to preserve the earth, the cult-ish stuff is secondary and imo mostly a result of Ra's demanding absolute loyalty from everyone (to the point of even trying to make his own daughter kill the man she loved), a means to an end (in order to ensure loyalty), and his own ego. So yeah, to say that they would HATE billionaires and the elites who hoard their wealth to further strip the world of its resources and pollute it in order to further fill their own pockets...is an understatement. I hate when people write them as ONLY an assassin cult as if that's the only thing there is to them. I hope that in the next issue we get to see more of the environmentalist side of the LoA, this line just gave me way too much hope lmao
#society is healing from the 'they won't let Damian have pets' bullshit#which was probably the dumbest bullshit imaginable tbh. like?? they are an eco-terrorist organization?? and you think they wouldn't#ENCOURAGE their heir to take the time to bond with a pet and learn how to be responsible for it.#and even if you want to take it in the MOST uncharitable and indoctrination-y direction they would STILL want him to#have a pet and bond with it so that they can use that bond as fuel to get him to want population reduction in order to protect nature#also I cannot wait to see the full Talia design in Juni Ba glory jfc I love everything that man draws#that guy made me like the RR costume what the hell#also I am grossly oversimplifying how the LoA's environmentalism works + only going with a singular interpretation#so please actually read their earlier comics and come to your own conclusions about them because how different people read them#is FASCINATING when it isn't tinged by the Morrison version. I myself read them differently back before I worked through my#religious trauma (cult shit hit different back then) and then shifted again after realizing how much billionaires contribute to#climate change compared to the rest of us regular ass people (making me dislike the population-reduction aspect more)

y/n loved steve.
her and steve have been the best of friends since the middle of second grade, when steve asked if he could have one of y/n's chocolate dipped marshmellows her mother packed her. how could seven year old y/n say no to eight year old steve's lopsided smile and missing front teeth.
ever since the two have been inseparable. throughout middle school and high school steve somehow managed to drag y/n into all of his antics and strange behavior.
in eighth grade steve managed to get her to go with him to egg the principals house as a dare. and in freshman and sophomore year he convinved her and his large group of friends to go skinny dipping while it was barely thirty degrees outside. (they all got frostbite and couldn't feel their fingers or toes for a solid week).
these reasons explain why him and some middle schooler were standing in front of y/n's red front door.
"why are we asking this girl for help? we could've been halfway down the train tracks right now!"
"will you relax? you said the more help we get the better the plan will be."
after three knocks on the door, it opens to reveal y/n with the most confused expression steve has ever seen on the girl.
she points to the kid, "why do you have a child with you? what-"
the child in question raises his hand to shake y/n's, catching her off gaurd.
"dustin henderson, pleasure. now we need to go," with that he walks back towards steve's parked car, making him deliver some form of an explanation.
y/n crosses her arms as steve finally responds.
"it's a very long story, but me and dustin need your help with something."
steve's big brown eyes lock with y/n's in a plead, as he flashes a dopey smile. she sighs, not questioning anything while slipping her shoes on to follow steve to his car.
steve taps the passenger seat window.
"what?" dustin asks.
"it's y/n's seat, get out."
"the hell? i was here first steve. make her sit in the back."
y/n chuckled at the boys' bickering, smiling proudly as dustin fussed even more while getting in the back seat.
"can one of you explain why you dragged me out of my house on this fine saturday?" y/n asked a few minutes into the drive, watching steve drive towards the woods near her house.
"we're baiting a monster to a junk yard," dustin deadpans as steve parks the car next to a set of train tracks.
y/n only laughs, but still gets out of the car, only to be met with steve and dustin pulling buckets of meat, gloves and backpacks out of the trunk.
"you can't be serious right now. there's no such thing as monsters," y/n chuckles again.
"just put some gloves on and help," dustin demands.
"only if you have proof of said monster."
"oh we'll have proof," steve replies. the slight waver in his voice confirms well enough for y/n not to take this lightly, as she grabs a bucket of meat in her gloved hands.
the trio started walking down the train tacks, y/n and steve stayed relatively close to each other, while dusting walked a few feet ahead of them.
"so what kind of monster are we baiting with all this meat?" y/n asks.
dustin stops and turns to the older teenagers before responding, "picture a dog. now add slime and teeth and gross viens and a long tail. oh and no face."
y/n simply nods, while dustin turns back around.
the trio walked a few feet again before steve starts a conversation with dustin.
"all right let me get this straight. you kept something you probably knew was dangerous just to impress some girl?"
"okay that's grossly oversimplifying things," dustin exaggerates.
"why would she like some slug anyway?"
"i thought you said it was a dog," y/n pipes up from behind the boys.
"it was a slug, but now it's a dog," dustin answers, before looking back towards steve, "and it's an interdimensional slug? cause it's awesome," he giggles.
"don't you think you're trying to hard? what if she doesn't even think the slug is cool?"
"not everyone can have your perfect hair all right?" dustin lets out a sight of defeat.
steve shakes his head, "it's not about the hair man. the key with girls is to act like you don't care. drives 'em nuts."
y/n can't help but roll her eyes as dustin asks, "even if you do care?"
"exactly."
"then what?" curiosity fills dustin's voice again.
"you uh, wait till you feel it," steve smirks.
"feel what?"
"y'know like before it's gonna storm, you'll feel this like, electricity."
dustin starts going on a small rant about electromagnetic currents, before steve cuts him off.
"no no no, like a sexual electricity. you feel that, that's when you make your move."
y/n can't believe her best friend was giving a twelve year old relationship advice. she starts zoning out, continuing to plop down chunks of meat every now and then on the weathered train tracks.
the boys in front of her continue their conversation.
"what type is y/n?"
steve looks behind him, noticing the girl is a bit farther behind them, "what about her?"
"well is she a ninja? lion? some other secret third option?"
"y/n's different. she's not like any other girl i've met. that's why she's my best friend."
"bullshit."
steve's caught off gaurd, "sorry, what? what's bullshit?"
"you two are way more than friends."
"oh yeah? how do you know that? you just met her today, and have some analysis on us?"
"well considering you've brought her up in almost every conversation we've had, wanted to go to her for help with dart, and now are calling her different from other girls. i'm just doing the math."
"yeah, well stop," steve deadpans, sighing as he looks back at the girl again.
a few minutes of silence goes by, as y/n now catches up to steve and dustin.
"faberge," steve blurts out.
both y/n and dustin's eyebrows furrow.
"what?" dustin asks.
"it's faberge organics."
y/n starts giggling from besides steve, knowing where this is probably going. in all eleven years of knowing steve "the hair" harringon, not once has she been told his secret hair care routine.
"use the shampoo and conditioner when your hair's damp, not wet okay?"
"not wet, damp," dustin repeats.
"then four puffs of farrah fawcett spray."
this makes y/n burst out laughing, making dustin join in as well.
"something funny to you?" steve turns, annoyed by his best friend.
y/n shakes her head, "no, no of course not. other than the fact you use a girl's hair styling products."
"you guys tell anyone i told you this," he points at both dustin and y/n, "your asses are grass, got it?"
they both nod, before dustin asks, "farrah fawcett, really?"
"i mean she's hot."
⋆ ˚ 。 ⋆ ୨୧ ˚
after what felt like forever, y/n, steve and dustin made it to the junkyard dustin was leading them to.
"good call dude," steve praises as y/n pats dustin on the back, making the boy smile.
they pile the rest of the meat into a large pile in the middle of the junkyard, when a new voice makes them look to the right.
y/n guesses it's some of dustin's friends, but he doesn't look happy about them being here.
dustin drags the other boy behind a red rusted car, while the girl walks over to y/n and steve.
"hey, i'm max," she holds out her hand.
"i'm y/n, and that over there is steve," max nods. "i think the plan is to grab any trash we can find to cover the windows on this bus, alright?"
with that the new trio quickly begin covering the bus with old plates of metal, car doors, and wire, before steve goes off to find dustin and his friend.
the second friend of dustin's soon introduces himself to y/n, making the girl smile at all the kids' kindness towards her.
time went by far too quickly, as the sun was now setting and the group of five was sitting in different places around the bus.
lucas was on top of the bus with a pair of binoculars glued to his eyes. max was sitting in one of the torn up bus seats. dustin was anxiously pacing. y/n and steve were sitting next to each other on the floor, while steve was busy flicking a lighter.
"so you really fought one of these things before? and you're sure it wasn't a bear?"
"shit, don't be an idiot okay? if you don't believe us, just go home," dustin pouts.
"jeez, past someone's bed time?" max replies, before going up the ladder in the direction of lucas.
"dustin!" y/n scolds.
"that's good, just show her you don't care."
y/n punches steve in the arm.
"i don't," dustin responds.
steve turns as dustin sits down. he notices y/n's nervous habit of picking at her nails. the last time he noticed her do it was sophomore year before her driving test. and now a year and a half later she was doing it again.
"hey, you okay?" he stops flicking the lighter.
y/n nods, "yeah. i mean i've never fought a monster before," she smiles slightly.
"you'll be fine, trust me. i'll protect you," steve smiles at her, watching as the worry leaves her tired eyes.
"thanks steve."
the sweet moment however was cut short, by a distant growling noise, and dustin jumping up to the wire covered slit in the side of the bus.
"lucas, what's happening?"
"hold on!" lucas yells.
"who knew twleve year olds could be full of so much sass?" y/n questions as steve helps her up off the floor.
"right?" he agrees with a low chuckle.
everyone on the bus soon spots the monster they were looking for. y/n couldn't help but grip steve's jacket sleeve tighter than she was a minute ago, when she sees the monster's face.
well, resemblance of a face. she shivers at the light chittering noises as he sniffs the pile of meat.
"why isn't he taking the bait?" dustin asks no one in particular.
"maybe he's not hungry," y/n guesses.
"maybe he's sick of cow," steve then answers, beginning to back away from y/n and dustin, just as max climbs down the ladder.
"steve, what are you doing?" dustin asks.
"just get ready," he tosses y/n his lighter, as he grabs a bat from besides the door.
"steve are you insane? you could get killed out there," y/n hisses, only wanting him to say he's joking and stand next to her again.
y/n's breath hitches as steve goes out the busted doors and into the lion's den. or would it be dog's den?
whatever it may be, it only stresses the older girl out more once the demodog can be seen in front of steve.
as steve stops mocking the demodog, he swings his nailed back more times than he can count, as he runs away from the monster whenever it chases him.
the three younger kids begin yelling for him at the same time, panicking for him. y/n can only bite her nails and watch in terror as her best friend might be killed in the next five minutes.
"he's insane," max calls out.
"he's awesome," dustin responds with a smile.
lucas calls out from above, alerting steve of the other dogs approaching.
"there's more of them?" y/n questions dustin.
dustin avoids her question before yelling through the window, "steve! abort!"
max and y/n join in on the yelling, until y/n begins opening the bus doors.
steve stumbles up the steps and is out of breath after he shoves the door closed, now only inches away from y/n.
"you're an idiot."
"are they rabid or something?" max asks.
"they can't get in! they can't!" dustin yells as one of the dogs rams itself against the metal doors.
steve grabs y/n's arm to bring her away from any form of danger, something he's gotten used to doing over the past few years.
dustin begins yelling god knows what into his walkie talkie set, as lucas climbs down the ladder and into the group of worried kids.
y/n takes in a deep breath and grabs steve's bat from out of his hands.
"y/n what the hell?" he asks, before his eyes widen, watching her begin the trek up the ladder.
he grabs her waist, stopping her, "what on earth do you think you're doing?"
"what if more are up there?"
"then let me handle it!" he whisper-yells.
"no, you stay here with the kids. they seem to trust you more."
y/n starts walking up the ladder again, definitely missing the feeling of steve's big hands on her waist.
y/n makes it to the top of the bus, clutching the nailed bat in her hands until her knuckles practically turn white. her head twists and body turns at any sound she hears, not wanting to take any chances at missing one of those dogs.
she fully turns around at the sound of claws on metal, watching as a demodog crawls onto the top of the bus.
the color in her face drains as she beings walking towards it. steve and the kids inside the bus can't help but start calling out her name, just like they all did when steve was outside.
the demodog growls at her, as y/n holds the bat up, ready to swing. however another demodog makes it way up from the other end of the bus.
thankfully, dustin notices the faint prints of the dog's feet towards the back and is quick to alert steve.
"y/n!" he yells up the ladder, "there's two, you have to get down!"
"i'm kinda busy here!" her voice shakes, and she prays that steve doesn't notice. he does.
once the first demodog is close enough, she swings the bat with as much force as she can muster and it rolls off the bus onto the dried grass beneath her.
she lets out a sigh of relief, althoguh steve's words finally register, just as the second demodog runs towards her and slashes it's claws through her left leg. the force makes it so y/n falls forward, making steve's bat fall out of her hands and lands with a thud farther down the bus.
steve's head immediately picks itself up as he hears y/n's ear splitting scream, followed by the call of steve's name. he skips two rings at a time as he climbs the ladder, scrambling to get through the opening.
his eyes widen as y/n's trying her hardest to kick the demodog away, but move away from it at the same time. however she can't move much because of the pain seering up her leg. steve turns his head, noticing his bat behind him, and is as quick as possible to swing at the dog. he gets the dog off the bus in two swings.
as soon as he takes another look at y/n, he drops the bat and kneels in front of her.
"hey, hey you're okay," his calm voice is an exact opposite of everything the two teens just went through.
y/n shakes her head and cries more as steve looks down at the gashes in her leg. there's three thick lines of skin missing, with blood dripping down her leg, ruining her pants and single converse.
out of instinct, steve takes off his signature grey jacket and places it over y/n's leg. she reaches forward and holds onto steve's arm as if her life depended on it.
"steve!" she cries more.
"i know. i know it hurts baby," the petname rolls of his tongue before he can stop it, "but we need to stop the bleeding okay? it'll help in the long run."
y/n leans her head forward, crying into steve's neck as he continues tending to her.
"dustin! max! lucas! i need your help!"
the three middle schoolers come up quickly, dustin already looking for things in his backpack as he sits down besides steve.
lucas helps dustin find anything to help stop the bleeding, as max sits next to y/n and rubs her back.
steve throws his now bloodied jacket somewhere on the top of the bus, as dustin hands him a few paper towels. steve's heart rate calms slightly as the blood flow has slowed down since he began helping y/n.
"will this work?" lucas asks steve, holding out a worn out bandage wrap from his own backpack.
steve nods, before dustin quickly takes the paper towels, only wanting to help steve.
"this is gonna sting a little okay? and it might be tight, but it's okay, yeah?" steve's calm voice floods her ears again.
he feels her nod against him and mutter oout a 'yeah', before he carefully wraps the bandage around her leg. once he finshes, his hand hovers over the area, as he rubs his tumb back and forth.
"you're okay," steve whispers against the top of her head, and kisses her hair.
her hold on his shirt loosens and her breathing starts going back to his normal state.
"hey there champ," steve smiles as she brings her face out of his neck. steve wipes under her eyes with his thumb.
"you think you can walk?" dustin asks carefully, definitely not wanting to piss y/n or steve off at the moment.
y/n nods, "i'm definitely going to need some help."
the three kids are the first to go down the ladder, grabbing their bags, and steve's bat and bloodied jacket.
steve helps y/n down the ladder, and once she's at the bottom, lucas and dustin help her stand until steve reaches the bottom.
the same process is made until everyone is standing outside the bus. y/n is leaning practically all her body weight against steve, making sure not to lean on her injured leg.
"do you think steve scared them off?" lucas broke the silence, now noticing none of the demodogs were around them anymore.
"no, no way."
"jeez thanks," steve responds to dustin's response, after wrapping his arm tighter around y/n's waist.
"they were going somewhere," dustin continues.
"where?" max asks.
"the lab," dustin and lucas say at the same time.
just as the group begins walking towards the forest, after dustin hands out flashlights for everybody, y/n winces as she tries to take a few steps.
"you guys okay?" dustin asks.
"yeah, yeah, you guys start walking. we'll be there in a few," steve responds, helping y/n sit down on the hood of an abandoned car.
"are you okay?" steve rubs over the denim of y/n's pants, making his hands rest on her thighs.
she nods, "yeah it just feels weird."
now steve nods, before she speaks up again.
"you called me baby."
"what?"
"up on the top of the bus," she explained, "you called me baby."
steve's face instantly become pink as his cheeks felt hot.
"oh, i uh, i didn't mean to. it was kind of in the heat of the moment i guess. i swear i-"
y/n cuts him off, "i liked it."
"oh?" is all steve can get out.
y/n nods again, "i really liked it. and maybe this is just the blood loss talking, but i really like you steve."
steve is silent as she continues rambling.
"i've liked you since you took me to the eighth grade dance, in that stupid blue dress my mom made me wear. i've liked you since you invited me to that stupid pool party with nancy wheeler when you liked her. i've liked you since you helped me find my car in the school parking lot," she pauses as they both let out a laugh. "i've liked you forever steve."
steve lets y/n's words sink in. as he does his smile only grows wider.
"i've liked you forever too," he begins to lean closer to y/n.
he's now fully standing between y/n's legs, not letting his hands fall from her thighs. he captures her lips gently at first, feeling her hands move to hold onto his shoulders.
he deepens the kiss, both of them letting years of untold love fall onto the other's lips. y/n's hands move up towards his hair, holding the strands in the back between her fingers.
y/n is the first to pull back, solely to catch her breath and so she can admire a lovestruck steve. her hands move down from his hair to his biceps, as his still stay on her thighs.
"hey steve?" her voice is quiet.
he hums a response.
"do you think you could carry me to this lab we're going to?"
steve smiles and nods, "i was hoping you'd ask."
y/n giggles as he's being as gentle as possible to pick her up off the car and into his arms. he leans forward to kiss her forehead before he starts walking.
"i'm sorry i ruined your favorite jacket," she apologizes as she leans her head on steve's shoulder.
"it's okay, i needed a new one anyway."

The parallels between Jay's Arc rn and Nya's earlier In the series is truly something to behold
It would be so interesting if the writers had Nya and the Ninja unintentionally do to Jay what was done to her
What I mean is: Nya's Arc(I'm grossly oversimplifying here btw) In the beginning of the series was about her paving her own path and trying to deal with having little choice In the direction her destiny went. she had to give up her role as the samurai, something she chose to be on her own, to become the water ninja, something that was chosen for her. Then she had to deal with all that was season 6 having her choices essentially snatched from her
She wanted to be the one to choose how her life went. She was tired of others telling her how her life was going to go and not consult her In the slightest
That really parallels Jay's Arc in DR. As I've said before he's had very little choice in his life post merge. Under the control of the administration, while yes he did have some freedom to play video games, we saw just how strict and by the book that place is so we can presume that even with that freedom he still had tight rules he had to obey
Then he left for what he presumed to be freedom under Ras' command. But we all know that isn't true freedom. Jay was lied to, and manipulated to follow Ras' commands. Very strict commands cuz we know who Ras is. And then when he was no longer useful he was promptly tossed out
He finally thought he found some purpose only for that purpose to be snatched away, leaving him with nothing.
Now he's all on his own finally free from anyone's control and I imagine he's not very eager to listen to anyone anytime soon.
Hence why he's now gone Rogue.
Jay and Nya's Arcs are so similar to me message wise that I cannot see it as pure coincidence and I hope that it's used in an effective way
I wanna see Nya unintentionally being a hypocrite. I wanna see her so desperate to get Jay back that she doesn't even try to acknowledge who he is as of NOW In the matter. All she sees is her yin, her love who's lost and alone and needs help and she feels that being with them is the best choice so she makes that decision for him
And of course being with them is better than him being on his own. Thats his family! I know this, you know this but JAY doesn't know this nor does he care right now. And that's the point of view we have to consider cuz through it all Jay's the victim here. He's the one who forgotten everything and is trying to discover his place In the world after being controlled twice now.
All he sees is some random lady that he kinda hates and her friends insisting over and over that he come with them and to go with them. That's where his home is, screw anything else. All he sees is the same shit being spouted to him that Ras prolly did and i imagine it would be infuriating
Tbh They kind of have already started going down that route with having Nya insist that Jay belongs with them. While that is true as I said she doesn't really stop to consider Jay's feelings on the matter even if u can't really blame her
In all likely the Jay she knew would absolutely approve of what she's doing, cuz he would do the same, but that Jay isn't here rn and she's not really considering that. None of the ninja are considering that
They plan on chasing Jay down to get him to come home with them, not really considering(or ignoring) the fact that Jay wants nothing to do with them
They r ignoring his feelings for the sake of trying to get back the Jay THEY know with little consideration with what the Jay of NOW wants
They don't consider the very real potential reality that Jay may never get his memories back, that he may never be the same again cuz they don't want to consider that potential reality
Cuz how would they handle Jay then? Would they accept him as who he is? Or will they continue to search for the Jay they lost, not really caring to know the Jay that is here?
I wanna see that conflict happen, I wanan see Nya being that hypocrite. (albeit unintentionally and trying to help of course) i wanna see her be that pushy and disregarding Jay's feelings cuz she thinks that she knows better. And I want the reality that she hasn't really cared about the Jay of the current to smack her In the face, to smack them all In the face and face that reality perhaps from a new ally of Jay's(me including my huge copium) who doesn't care about his past and just sees him for who he is now
I want Nya to realize how she had been treating Jay this whole time and realize that she messed up. That in her desperation to get her love back, that she had been ignoring Jay's feelings, ignoring his words and trying to decide his life for him, without considering HIM at all, the same thing that had been done to her all those years ago
I'm rambling just to ramble cuz why is this post so long omfg

arcane, shipping and “word of god” within queer readings
tldr: “word of god” vs “death of the author” through the lens of jayvik
so first of all, here’s linke’s now-infamous reaction to jayvik:
first of all, there’s the classic mistake of conflating asexuality with aromanticism (they can and do overlap, but having one does not automatically mean the other)
to be clear: asexual viktor is not a bad concept. i’ve seen arguments for and against it that bring up valid points (there’s also the question of whether it’s a stereotype to make the disabled character asexual, but i’m not disabled, so i don’t really know the fine details of that debate?), but the questionable thing here is that it seems to have been brought up specifically against a jayvik interpretation
aside from this i’ve seen twitter screenshots floating around where it looks like linke is arguing with people about jayvik? idk—
sigh.
i’m not even going to get into this.
ironically, and unfortunately for linke, a piece of media the fans drew an immediate parallel to is the ending of the magnus archives with two of the main characters jon and martin dying together to save the universe, and they are both a canonical couple and jon is explicitly confirmed to be ace within the universe by dialogue between characters
amanda overton, luckily, is a breath of fresh air:
the first part of what overton says is similar to linke—written with a brotherly love, etc.—but while linke uses this as a “gotcha!” moment to shut down discussion, overton rightly recognizes that “other people give it their own meaning”—that art exists as dialogue with the audience where intent and interpretation do not necessarily align
honestly, what strikes me the most when contrasted with linke is the lack of possessiveness here, as linke clings to the original intentions of the writers like a lifeline whereas overton has set her creation free into the wild with serenity
which can also be rephrased to mean that linke believes in the power of word of god
so word of god is extremely interesting when it comes to the history of queer media
from the korrasami being confirmed via word of god because of network restrictions that meant they had their hands tied when it came to the text of the show, but still making a huge step in the direction of explicit queer rep
to hannigram, where the ship has an incredibly solid textual base within the universe (with “is hannibal in love with me?” “yes” being actual lines), but shipping wiki still has it as “canon (confirmed by bryan fuller)” as if because it’s a queer couple, it needs that extra layer of assurance when for a straight ship it would have less scrutiny
so these two examples have been instances of positive word of god—cases where the creators intentionally wrote in queerness
and media creators have not always been so supportive—just look at the 2010s epidemic of queerbaiting
BUT HERE’S THE THING: the “word of god” stands in near direct contrast with another incredibly useful tool—“death of the author,” which posits that authors essentially lose authority over the meaning of their work and that the work can be analyzed contradicting the authorial intent if there is textual evidence to support it (grossly oversimplified)
essentially, the “death of the author” approach happened a lot in fandoms that had “hostile” creators (moff and gatis mocking fans for shipping, both within and without the show sherlock, for example)
and the thing about fandoms is that it’s great when the creator is on our side! but if not? we’re going to be just fine on our own, we’ve survived like that for decades
and here comes 2024, a year rich with queer content and the practice of queer readings having lost a fair bit of the stigma that was long associated with it (with special mention to the good omens and ofmd fan readings before and after the episodes with kissing were released)
and linke is… still stuck in a 2010s mindset??? like i’m not sure how to explain it more elegantly. do not be like linke
in contrast, amanda overton has the much more nuanced view of fandom and fan interpretations, where she can both acknowledge authorial intent and that differing interpretations will exist and that they still carry weight. be like amanda overton

There's a lot to be said about Zambia's relationship with South Africa, especially during the Apartheid era. A nation with legal political independence, like much of "post-colonial" Sub-Saharan Africa the deep rooted structures of Colonialism and ongoing pressure of Imperialism have kept it economically dependent on the Imperial Core. Like much of Southern Africa, South Africa specifically is a major locus of that dependence. Indeed, the primary focus of South Africa's foreign policy towards its immediate neighbours, the "Frontline States" in the struggle against Apartheid, was to keep things that way using the most suitable combination of soft and hard power that South Africa had at its disposal.
Now Zambia got off lightly in terms of the military threat it faced, suffering no major South-African proxy wars and relatively few commando raids against the personnel and offices of anti-apartheid resistance that had set up on Zambian soil. The Apartheid regime saw Kenneth Kaunda, the Zambian head of state from 1964 (the year of Zambian political independence) to 1991 (by which time Apartheid was beginning to be dismantled), as a relative moderate due his anti-communist sentiments. Despite Kaunda's outspoken opposition to the Apartheid system, he maintained strong economic ties with South Africa. Zambia's copper mines had their ownership nationalised but were still managed and operated by the same companies, to the point that the pre-independence culture of racism remained alive and well decades later and many Zambian engineers left the mining industry for the private sector as soon as they could due to the discrimination they faced from their mostly white (often South African) managers. A similar arrangement existed for Emerald mines, an industry that only began development in the 1970s and remained in its infancy until the 1990s, remained largely in private hands.
Yet at the same time Zambia was still an independent African nation. On top of verbally denouncing Apartheid to the international community, Kaunda's regime offered material assistance and free access to the anti-colonial resistance movements that toppled the Portuguese Empire and Rhodesia while destabilising South African apartheid to the point of dissolution. Despite the burden of exploitation the masses faced from both foreign imperialists and their local collaborators, conditions for the black majority of Zambia were significantly less vicious than for those living under Apartheid in South Africa and Namibia. Relations between Zambia and South Africa were messy, complex and often contradictory but they were like this because Zambia was very much its own nation. While the shadow of Apartheid is something that must always be taken into account while discussing Zambia in this period, especially in the context of South African investment, this country was much more than an extension of South Africa. You can't talk about it like it's some glorified Bantustan
And yet for most people none of that matters. All Southern Africa is the same to them; who gives a shit about the actual history of struggle? The whole "Elon Musk's dad own a South African emerald mine" is incredibly stupid because it's a severely misleading distortion of the facts that only gets passed around due to widespread attitudes of chauvinistic ignorance towards Africa. Now Errol Musk's statements about his involvement in the Southern African emerald trade are inconsistent; at times he claims to have owned a stake in an emerald mine while at others he claims to have merely traded in the gems. But either way, the gems in question are Zambian and not South African and that's a distinction that matters.
Additionally, the spread of this rumour comes from a grossly oversimplified view of Imperialist exploitation in Africa. While the mining industry is an important vector by which wealth is extracted from the continent, it is far from the only one. Errol Musk did not make his fortune from emeralds; he was an electrical engineer who went own to invest in a wide assortment of businesses from auto parts stores to tourist lodges. A beneficiary of Apartheid for sure, operating in an economic system made possible only through the brutal exploitation of millions of Africans, but in a much more sophisticated way than the cartoonish caricature of a mine overseer a lot of people seem to have in mind.
The point must also be made that most mining in Africa takes the form of modern industrial enterprises operated by voluntary workers who, while still incredibly exploited in terms of the value they produce compared to what they receive, tend to be relatively well paid by local standards. Even in apartheid South Africa and Namibia itself, mining jobs were considered among the most desirable work an African could get. The image of slaves held at gunpoint to dig with shovels, distorted half memories of Sierra Leonean diamonds and Congolese Coltan, do not represent the reality of Imperialism in most of the continent.
The whole "Musk Emerald Mine" discourse is an all around outstanding example of ignorance, made even more egregious by the ostensible "progressive" beliefs of those who engage in it. "Leftists" who care little for what's actually happening to the people of the Imperial Periphery, who see the suffering of Africans as little more than a cheap way to mock an individual they don't like. Maybe it would pay to open a book or two before you open your mouth. Or at least look at a world map and see the funny solid line that exists between "South Africa" and "Zambia"

My mind going on a journey of like. Odysseus being more often than not only speaking to Eurylochus in private or combat moments during Troy, so he got used to a relationship where the two either goaded each other on, or Eurylochus was one of Odysseus’ soundboards for battle strategies
War is difficult to leave behind and after ten years camping among the ships, then being stuck sailing among those same men he’s been camped with, this is purely speculation but like… it feels like Eurylochus represents that this army has bonded in a way, separate from Odysseus. Odysseus who is King and bargains with kings and gods alike.
But the bond of brotherhood in soldiers is a well documented phenomenon. I don’t know the exact military structure of a fleet of 600 theoretical Ancient Greek soldiers and I’m not going to. The point I’m trying to make is that the structure had clearly been fracturing due to the boundaries that had clearly needed to be changed and dissolved due to the 10 years of war and extended sea voyage gone wrong. This was a polycule from hell. Probably. To grossly oversimplify.
And I think some of Eurylochus’ breach of conduct with “hey, can we take this somewhere private?” Is fully a side effect of like. Odysseus might have some privacy, but otherwise…
We’re on a motherfucking boat Odysseus!! What the fuck is private???
Like. Odysseus is a sneaky bastard shaped bastard man. Love him. But. He’s a king. How much of his Troy siege experience was the same as the army camp experience of like… “I know everything about everyone I know against my will” or was it still awful but with slaves and attendants and space enough that you don’t hear your neighbours fuck at night? Do you have a cabin in your ship or do you bunk with your crew? I’m not dedicated enough to this point to stop and search for archeological evidence of boat construction of the era.
And I mean. Technically neither of them are wrong because if they had listened to Odysseus they would just be home already and it would be fine. But you can’t have Gods and Men without exploring the whole concept of why a man chooses the actions he does, and every wrong action can have the right reason. And that creates art in a tragedy.
It could have been different, but because it wasn’t it was beautiful.

I think a part of the logical and materialist problem with "Why can't he just be a feminine cis guy" is that there's a certain level of femininity a feminine "cis" guy expresses where they are functionally going to be regarded as trans anyway. Like. Very few places will look at a man with long hair and women's clothes or makeup and regard him as a "man"... because of transmisogyny. Even if he, internally, feels himself to be a man, his idea of being a man is fundamentally unacceptable, and even if he says he's a man, he will still be treated like he's trans, and specifically like a trans woman, until he proves otherwise. I and several other guys I've met have literally had this happen to us because someone looked at us, asked if we were men, and physically recoiled upon being told yes, or something else of a similar nature, because to them all we had done was confirm we were transfem, even though we aren't. You can, in essence, get out of it by giving proof, but to do so you usually have to enact transmisogyny. And even if you do that, you are still not considered a "man".
In order to "just" be a feminine cis guy this hypothetical man has to still in essence closet himself and restrain his gender presentation. You would also need to violently use transmisogyny to avoid the social consequences of effeminacy. The very idea shows a lack of understanding for how many "gnc men" function in the world. The one restraining the gnc man in the hypothetical is more likely to be the one who grossly oversimplifies things to being ""just" a feminine cis guy". They are not providing alternatives or theory for the hypothetical person they bring up, or giving the desperately needed and often absent space to accept and embrace fluidity in gender for those people- some of whom will turn out to be trans, without any ambiguity about it. In fact, the very argument is specifically brought up to choke off that fluidity and exploration. No one is being "protected".
Am I making sense.
#cipher talk#Idk I came out first the first time in 2014 and fundamentally part of my brain automatically accepts transvestites and gnc people#And crossdressers and whatever other category reactionaries try to shove people into to claim they aren't trans as being trans#It's an umbrella term. And cis people really dont understand the difference between all of us anyway.#They often dont treat you any better if you do clarify 'I'm not trans I'm a crossdresser' or w/e and they believe you either

okay so, yesterday I found your spn meta by chance and fell in love with them 'cause more than writing they're like images, like they really depict things and I just immediately understand what you mean instantly + I started to rewatch Steve Yockey's episodes 'cause I feel like I like his writing (lots of queer! lots of rom-com references! but it's all done so intellingently, I love it!) but ALSO sometimes it doesn't translate to me + I just saw you wrote about "Optimism"= I GOTTA ASK: what's your take on "Optimism"? I don't understand what the Zombie story and the Musca one should reveal about the characters. Visually, it looks like the Musca = Charlie, so Harper and the zombie are ??? I'm mad at myself 'cause I don't seem to get what the show is telling me so I'm hoping you can share what the show tells YOU and, vicariously, I can get it as well (lol). THANK YOU!
Hi! Hello!
Oh, really? That's so cool. I still have trouble thinking of myself as a "meta writer." I don't mean to be. I just like to ramble. But cool! It's probably mostly that we think alike and are sympatico in some key ways. :-) Always fun to find kindred spirits!
///
O P T I M I S M
I have so many thoughts on Optimism. It's one of my fave episodes! I actually did a re-watch-slash-convo with some friends on Discord and just transcribed the very, very, very LOOONG bulk of it today!
I haven't written much on the Musca. After spending a lot of time of @scoobydoodean's blog, I've just about decided the Musca plot is actually a Sam's emotions-through line more than it is a true dark mirror. Even AU Charlie is cheeky about it:
AU CHARLIE (annoyed at Sam, about the Musca): Your nifty metaphor has holes.
Basically, Charlie is saying that mirrors aren't one-to-one, and that trying to force-fit them into being one-to-one can be super annoying sometimes.
//
CHARLIE - Every two hundred years there is "bad egg". When a male fails to find a mate, he abandons his community and starts using peoples bodies to "nest". Binding them together with a viscous goo. And when the goo fits...
//
The Musca/fly is at face-value:
A) A bodysnatcher plot: In that regard, it could be like all angels, demons, or anyone inhabiting a body. (Cas, Lucifer, Michael, Crowley, etc.) Ergo, it's a dark, uncharitable Cas mirror the way Dave Mathers outlaw wraith was in Tombstone. It could be saying that Cas "failed" among "his own people" and cruelly took up space in a human body. But that would be grossly oversimplifying the whole situation, saying that Cas "should have stayed with his people," which ofc doesn't work.
It, as Charlie says, "has a lot of holes." @ilarual has written a lot about the totalitarian structure of Heaven. And Sam himself wants Cas around. As far as metaphors go, it's a dud for Cas.
B) It's a failure to thrive plot: Because the Musca "failed" in The Real World with its Own People, perhaps failed to live up to The prescriptive Dream of Success (TM), now it's wreaking havoc on others.
Sam himself "failed out" of Harvard. He "choked." Kevin Train and Patience Turner are also Failed Gifted Students. Losers who didn't live up to their potential. This could even apply to Chuck, binding together his characters because he's a Loser with a capital L.
///
ANYWAY, I feel like the Music plot is a "red herring" for a few reasons.
One: The main Harper plot is about breaking narratives, about not relying so much on books. And then Charlie says this:
CHARLIE: Goo. So, yeah. I'd say this is the right place. Now, I'm just trying to figure out what we are dealing with. Thus, books.
Aside: Later Cas says sarcastically in Ouroboros that Sam and Rowena, "Have many, many books."
So, there's this niggling indictment of trying to find too much truth in books...
///
Two: Sam has a tendency to see something and, like, imprint on it. He tends to fall into "It's just like me!" instead of speaking frankly about the present situations and emotions.
*In American Nightmare, he sees Madga Peterson, an abused child* -> "She's just like me!"
*In Somewhere in Between Heaven and Hell, he sees someone lying about something completely unrelated to his current situation* ->"Omg, they're lying to them, like I'm lying to Dean! It's just like me!"
*In Lost & Found, he meets Jack Kline, who is Lucifer's son "OMG, he's just like me!" -> *spoiler alert* Jack is not in fact much like Sam at all. -> Sidenote: instead of speaking frankly about how Dean is grieving, how Lucifer killed Cas and likely killed Mary, he uses complex euphemisms with Jack, ones that actually obscure the reality of the situation! This winds up annoying Jack and making him pull away from Sam.
///
IMHO...Sam isn't...naturally all that great with emotions.
He tries really, really hard, and he loves patterns, but he's always seeming to force-fit situations and scenarios into neat little boxes so he can passively-aggressively use it to indirectly communicate something he feels about himself.
He has a very cognitive empathy style. Bless him.
///
So what's REALLY going on here?
Well. In this episode, he wants Charlie to stay. He wants Charlie to stay and fill a void the other Charlie left behind. He wants Charlie to stay really, really badly. And he beats around the bush about it.
At first, he sidesteps his own emotions by passive-aggressively implying that it's Dean that in fact needs her.
CHARLIE: He'll be fine. Your brother, I mean. He's got other friends, right? SAM: Plenty. Uhm, he used to have a pretty damn good wingman. CHARLIE: So call that guy to check on him. SAM: That guy was you. CHARLIE: No, it wasn't. SAM: Right, I, uh, sorry. I didn't mean that.
And then by trying to make the case fit her.
He's very indirect and weird about it. Because he's Sam. (It's a contrast to the effortless, awkward-but-honest communication style we see from characters like Jack and Dean in this very episode.)
SAM: Charlie, you can't just quit and go live on a mountain somewhere. People need people. CHARLIE: Why? Cause they're the luckiest people in the world? SAM: Look, come on. We just do. We're social animals. CHARLIE: Emphasis on animals. SAM: Yeah, but you're also a hunter. The things that we've seen, it's not so easy to just walk away from it all. Believe me, I've tried. Our Charlie tried. CHARLIE: Yeah, well again, she ain't me. It's my life, Sam. Not hers. And not yours.
Ah, yes. Instead of saying, “I want you here,” it’s, “people need people.”
And Hell, sometimes indirect communication works! Like how Dean and Cas use Felix the snake to indirectly communicate with Jack in Peace of Mind!
But the difference with Sam is...he's not using this indirect communication style to find out how Charlie feels (the way Dean and Cas use the snake to suss out how Jack feels).
No, he's using the whole thing to try to tell Charlie what he thinks is best for her! To tell her things, not find out things.
Eventually, he breaks and says what he actually thinks, but only after AU Charlie is starting to lose her patience with him:
SAM (faux-sadly): Got to say, I do feel kind of bad for the Musca. I mean, he could have been happy if he'd stayed with his people. Didn't have to go off on his own just because... CHARLIE (exasperated): Okay, I get it. I am just like the bug and I shouldn't go out on my own.
OMG, Sammy! It's okay if we want to hit Sam sometimes, right? I too wanted to hit him after he said this to Charlie.
CHALIE: But your nifty metaphor has holes. I wasn't looking for love. I found it and I lost it. And I didn't kill people and literally nest in their body parts so...(Scene cuts to other Musca removing the body of the dead one) SAM: Okay, yeah I know, I know, How about this? Don't leave.
(Aside// I think this is a cheeky nod to the fact that Cas and Dean weren't looking for love either. In fact, they tried (and keep trying) really, really hard not to love each other. Their real life was faaaar more complicated than some simple "bodysnatcher plot.")
But thank God--Sam finally says outright what he needed to say to Charlie: Don't leave.
Now, it probably would've been better if he's gone a step further: "I don't want you to leave," but for Sam, this is pretty good progress.
SAM: Hear me out. Sure some people can do bad things when they're desperate or scared. But the guy we just saved, he has a wife and children. I'm not saying that all people are good people or even that most people are but if we help people then maybe they'll help people and all that. And that's worth it. Even with all the tears and death. It's worth it. CHARLIE: Just to be super clear, I am not like the fly monster. (Sam chuckles) But, I'll think about staying.
So I think OVERALL the Musca plot is really about highlighting Sam's difficult communication style, and I think it's intentionally being cheeky about it how it's using a "really "dumb metaphor" with gaping holes!
It's about how Sam tries to force-fit the case of the week into saying what he wants it to say...instead of just saying it.
///
I think Sam has a little bit of a "mental main character syndrome." He sees a scenario and moves directly into cognitive empathy, reading the situation and thinking:
How can I apply this to myself? Or make it a stand-in for either something I want to believe about myself or a stand-in for something I want to say indirectly?
Sometimes you'll see ppl insist that Sam is the "MC" because every storyline tells you "something about Sam." But I'm more in the camp that it's Sam's inherent cognitive style of empathy at work, desperately reworking anything and everything to make it apply to himself.
Whereas Cas and Dean (and Jack) have a truer emotional style of empathy, connecting with people for who they actually are, as they are.
That's not to say that both styles can't be manipulative when we want them to be. But Sam really struggles with his style in a way I feel like Dean and Cas do not. Dean and Cas perhaps don't even realize what effective communicators they actually are!

Some more Clarkson content (I think it’s democratically decided that that’s their shipping name now) for all the 4.5 people going feral about them with me:
Wayne met Scott Clarke once or twice back when Eddie was in middle school. The man was always up for a chat, even if Wayne didn’t exactly excel at small talk - Mr. Clarke made up for that with an admirable ease. After Eddie moved on to high school, he would run into the man at the grocery store every now and then, and they’d always greet each other - Mr. Clarke with a smile, Wayne with something no one but Eddie can recognize as a smile - but they never really talked much.
Then, Wayne finds a body in his living room. Eddie goes missing, reporters are crowding his home, and the police is more than ready to accuse his nephew of the most horrific things imaginable. Wayne spends his days practically going out of his mind with worry, and on top of the all-encompassing fear about what happened to his nephew, he has to deal with dirty stares and whispered conversations behind hands wherever he goes. The man who raised a murderer. That’s all he has become to the general public of Hawkins.
So when Scott Clarke knocks on the door of the vacant trailer he’s been moved to because of that weird leak in his ceiling, he’s about ready to shout at the man and slam the door in his face. Three excruciating days have passed since he found that girl and the powerless fear is eating him alive, and he is more than done with all those sensation-seeking nitwits - he just wants to be left alone so he can come up with some kind of plan to help Eddie, even though he has no clue where his boy is or if he’s even alive.
But Scott Clarke isn’t looking at him like all the others - he’s holding a casserole in his hands and his smile is gentle and sympathetic.
‘I remember your nephew from when he was in middle school,’ he says. ‘I’m so sorry about what happened. This whole situation must be terrible for you. Thought you could use a home-cooked meal and a listening ear - if you want to.’
And all his anger instantly melts away when he sees the genuine look in Scott’s eyes.
He opens the door further. ‘Why don’t you come in, Mr. Clarke?’
Scott looks around, takes in the bleak environment that is Wayne’s temporary home. But there’s no judgement in his eyes, no contempt, not even pity. He takes a seat and Wayne makes them some coffee, and he listens to what Wayne has to say in a way that no one has ever listened to him before: he gives him the time to think about his words, he nods and hums in agreement, he asks questions without being prying... And Wayne tells him all about Eddie; he finds the words he couldn’t find when that curly-haired reporter girl asked him about his nephew, when he couldn’t manage more than a grossly oversimplified “It just ain’t in his nature.” He tells him how Eddie always feeds the stray cats - and even an occasional raccoon - that wander around the trailer park; how he always makes Wayne fresh coffee when he goes to bed right before Wayne has to start his night shift; how he keeps an eye on the kids around Forest Hills whose home situations are less than ideal; how he came to Wayne broken and scared in escape of a father who used to beat him in attempts to make him less soft; how he cries at sentimental commercials and how loudly and unabashedly he shows his love for his friends.
Wayne hasn’t cried yet, not as long as there’s still hope. But when Scott looks at him all understanding and tells him he had a soft spot for Eddie ever since the boy set foot in his classroom, in his last year of middle school with a black eye and bruises on his arm, he finally breaks down. And the touch of Scott’s hand, covering Wayne’s with his own, while he sits quietly beside him, is the first comfort he has felt in a very long time.

although i’m not a fan of himbo garroth and his mystreet characterisation in general,, i think it makes some sense. he had two totally different upbringing’s in mystreet and diaries which obviously lead him to being very different in both series which i don’t see people mentioning a lot. by no means do i think that garroth’s grossly oversimplified,, himbofied mystreet portrayal is the natural conclusion to him having a better childhood (or at least better than his childhood in diaries) but him being laidback and more bubbly makes sense! i think a better written mystreet!garroth would still be relaxed and excitable but still have diaries!garroth’s intelligence and depth. garroth unfortunately has always been a victim of not really having a cohesive characterisation outside of having beef with zane. he’s always been all over the place. but i do think that in mystreet he would have been very different from his diaries self. i guess the real question is whether he would’ve been a better person or not
#bit of a ramble but i’ve been thinking a lot about garroth’s characterisation whilst writing my mystreet rewrite#i think everyone is going to have their own interpretation of him cuz he’s just a mess of character ngl#and especially when it comes to rewrites how far ppl wanna go with his himbo personality or if they wanna completely discard it#garroth ro'meave#minecraft diaries#mystreet#aphblr#aphmau#aphverse#aphmau minecraft diaries#mystreet aphmau

Can you explain how AI is different from human artists learning from other artists? Or why AI isn't okay but fanart is?
While these are super loaded questions, I will answer this as if you are asking in good faith.
Don't make me regret this.
So, these are two different questions with two different sets of answers. I will answer the second question first, because that is easy and very solidly anchored in the copyright law already:
Fanart, legally, is not okay. Literally, fanart is copyright infringement.
The reason why it is generally considered alright is two-fold:
One because the people making the fanart (so the ones taking the copyrighted characters and transforming them) mostly don't do it commercially and if they do, it usually is on such a small scale and in a way that there is no way that they would compete with the original copyright holder (all of these are points which are codified in the law under Fair Use).
And that brings us to two: While the copyright holder could STILL demand take downs they usually don't (even if it is their legal right) because most companies realise that fanart is free advertisement.
And there is the big crux of the matter: Artists ARE making use of their right as the copyright holders to demand that their copyrighted material is not used for a commercial product (because that is what most image generators are!) which directly competes with them.
Now, to answer your first question:
Even specialists in the field of machine learning will concede that, no, computers do NOT learn like humans. And everyone who says so is either grossly oversimplifying things or actively, maliciously misrepresenting the issue.
Ignoring the fact that the machine does not learn my itself, but that it needs humans to do the learning and classification for it, humans always interpret, while a machine can only ever make copies.
It's the difference between drawing yourself and making a photo collage with random snippets and pasting it roughly where it makes sense.
There is no interpretation, no INTENT behind any machine creation and the results are only given meaning by whoever looks at it. It's finding shapes in clouds.
Here, too, scale is a factor: I, as an artist who studies photos and other artists' works, can only do so at a certain pace. I'm fast, but not billions of images taken in and put out fast. There is no way a single artist, or even a small group of artists, will ever be able to study so many pieces and be able to put out so much work that it puts EVERY OTHER ARTIST out of work.
And that is the issue. It is a borderline monopoly issue that is based in a massive case of billions of copyright infringements.
When we say "theft" we don't mean LITERAL theft. The theft we're talking here is the same as wage theft.
Does an employer actively go in and steal the money out of their employee's pocket? No. But they are taking their labour without the intent of paying them for it.
That is the exact same form of theft artists are facing here.
Against our will, our works are used for a, and I repeat, COMMERCIAL PRODUCT that makes millions and billions of dollars and actively puts entire creative industries out of business.
If you don't see a problem with that, I don't know how to help you.
Image generators SOLELY benefit the already rich. It is monopolising art as a career into the hands of very few.
On the backs of our labour.
That's the difference.
That's the issue.
And we have asked nicely for our work not to be used. We have begged and pleaded with the companies. We have tried to explain the issue and they do not care. Even those companies who allow opt out make it nearly impossible to do so, putting even more strain on those people they have harmed.
The law is working too slowly, slow enough that by the time we have regulations the field of creative work might have forever changed for the worse.
And there really is no "just git gud" argument here, as many are implying. Because companies and the billionaires that run them really don't care about quality as long as they can get it cheap and fast. And no artist who wants to survive can put out enough art to compete with Image Gens. It doesn't matter that the generated pictures have mistakes or plain make no sense. If it's cheaper than a human, they will use it.

here's the thing about matthias: he isn't the honorable, reformed hero some of the fandom seems to see him as.
yes, he was raised by a tight-knit family of comrade soldiers and decides to betray them in the end. of course that took incredible strength. i don't deny that. but we also need to recognize that the drüskelle are not just some rogue cult. they are a core part of the fjerdan government, who is trying to wipe out the grisha because they are seen as dangerous. that's literally just genocide. however indoctrinated someone is, this is something that is evil from every angle, even if the character can't or won't see it.
and look, i love a good redemption arc, but matthias is such a passive actor in his. he falls in love with nina against his will. she changes his attitudes toward grisha because she's beautiful and kind so all grisha can't be bad, right? this a classic example of the trope of separating the "good ones" from the rest, where you cherry-pick specific individuals to point to as exceptions to a group's nature, which is still implied to be evil. you have to do a lot more than fall in love to truly unearth and address the roots of bigotry.
tbh, this is my biggest critique of the books as a whole. i loathe the "love conquers all" trope that pairs together a character from the oppressed group and one from the oppressors, letting the one show the other through the power of love that being bigoted is not nice. it puts all the responsibility on the former to prove their humanity, and gives all the credit to the latter's ability to be persuaded to recognize it. and then it inevitably leads to forgiveness, because the character has "earned" it by changing their views, once again making the victim seem like the villain if they don't absolve the oppressor of their past "mistakes". also, it's incredibly unrealistic for someone to fall in love with a person who actively hates them and considers them sub-human. in real life, people have to work on their bigotry before that happens, not use the relationship as a plot device for character development.
i think the idea of writing a character like matthias is neat. i think portraying someone's struggle to throw off the suffocating, hateful dogma they've been fed all their life is a story we need more of. i think personal growth of this variety should be celebrated, because otherwise people would never change. but i don't think the people, fictional or real, get to do this without facing profound consequences. it is not enough to feel sorry. it is not enough to apologize. it is definitely not enough to fall in love. and i think writing that lets people off the hook like this grossly oversimplifies power and oppression, and ends up being a feel-good way to romanticize people who cause a lot of harm.
a last note: my opinion is 100% influenced by my being bipoc. matthias is a classic aryan supremacist, even if being aryan isn't the thing he's being supremacist about. my gut reaction to that type of character is always going to be mistrust, both because people in real life have given me reason to be mistrustful and because characters like these are often written in a way that makes you sympathize with oppressors. i don't think matthias earns that trust, and i don't see why i owe him my affection as a reader.
#i know i'm usually a 'haha silly little textpost' blog (and don't get me wrong i still am) but this has been on my mind for a while#to be clear i don't think you have to hate him as a character to be a morally upstanding person#and there's nothing inherently wrong about relating to him either#but i do think we as a fandom (a very white one at that) need to acknowledge this#especially because it carries over beyond fiction#stories are powerful and the messages we take from them stick with us even after we close the book#plus even by the end he still is very bigoted#and i realize that he would have had more time to work on himself if he hadn't... y'know#but that's why i like fanon matthias a lot better#he's usually further along in his unlearning process or he actually has to experience that process in a realistically painful way#in fact i really *like* matthias fanon where he actually grapples with his hatred and comes out a better person for it when it's done well#i.e. when he isn't simply forgiven by everyone (especially nina) because he says sowwy#i am thankful to leigh bardugo for creating this universe AND i think she fumbled the matthias redemption arc#nuance!! it exists!!!#ok rant over#also absolutely NO calahan hate on this post#in this house we do not equate characters with their actors#soc#soc spinoff#matthias helvar#helnik#nina zenik#sab#six of crows#save six of crows#save shadow and bone#shadow and bone#crooked kingdom#grishaverse
