Ok this is something I noticed before but the implications didn't really fully click until my... third watch? Plus 2nd manga read. Geez. But anyways
Tumblr media
[ID: A screenshot from the 2011 Hunter x Hunter anime. Three Greed Island cards are shown over a blue background; the middle card being slightly bigger in the lineup. From left to right, they are Patch of Shore, Paladin's Necklace, and Blue Planet. End ID.]
At the end of Greed Island, the trio decide to take one card for each of them out of the game. Bisky takes Blue Planet, as was her original goal, but Gon and Killua's cards are the Paladin's Necklace and a transformed Accompany, respectively.
Reflecting their bond, their cards require the presence of the other to be truly useful. The Accompany cannot be taken as is. The Paladin's Necklace does nothing on its own. All of this is so that Gon can meet Ging, which Killua puts his card towards instead of something specifically for him alone (prioritizing Gon as usual), but it's also an Accompany, which is the only means in which they can stay together - their mutual want.
But it goes deeper than that. I wondered about the Accompany being transformed specifically into Patch of Shore before when it could've been any restricted slot card, but there is so much else going on at the end of the arc that my thoughts basically stopped at "well it's an odd card with no clear use" and "it's a card the protagonists spent a good deal of time working towards getting, so it's a recognizable callback to the audience" but oh man.
Gon probably would've been the one to transform that card. His card is the Paladin's Necklace, and that makes Killua's the Accompany. Disguising it as Patch of Shore, where Killua injured his hands, where Gon said that it has to be him, not only makes that card unequivocally Killua's, but also makes me think that this is some quiet way of Gon to show his appreciation for him.
The Accompany is his idea, after all, which says "I want you with me". Transforming it into Patch of Shore though, says "I don’t want to/I can’t do this without you."

watching hunter x hunter: greed island arc
i last wrote an update when i was midway through yorknew city arc. that arc as a whole was my favorite one! it was so much fun, and i loved how focused it was on kurapika's story.
i talked a lot about yorknew city arc in my last post, so i want to get into my thoughts on greed island! for starters, ever since it was mentioned in your new city, i was very excited to see how it would turn out
finding out that the game was actually a place you could travel to and experience the world was so interesting! it reminded me of jumanji and excited me to see how the story would unravel.
i know some people don't care for this arc because it isn't as "action-packed" as the previous one, but i have a soft spot for any type of training arc, and i feel that greed island could be put in that category!
killua and gon are already known to be quite strong. especially killua, with his intense assassin techniques. to be honest, i had been waiting for a moment when the two could finally put their limits to the test and become better acquainted with nen.
many new characters were introduced this time but bisky quickly became my favorite! her design was so cute, but i also loved how she WANTED killua and gon to improve their strength. the scenes with the greed island trio were so much fun to watch. killua and gon doing their best because they wanted to change and grow stronger while bisky was watching over them like a mother; it was just so moving!
Tumblr media
the killugon moments in this arc were so heartwarming. from gon saying he was glad to meet killua, killua being the only one to hold the ball during the dodgeball game, to gon proudly saying killua was his best friend. they just became so attached in such a short time, and it's so beautiful to see. they just really grew on me this arc, and i'm so excited to see how their friendship grows stronger.

hagsfiend war, the gyre souls, and calamity embers info :
hagsfiend war - - -
before the hagsfiends were sealed away, the islands were once one big continent. magic was prominent across the land and technology advanced rapidly, but due to greed and a lust for prosperity, nachtmagen leaked into the world. the presence of evil desire drew the attention of hagsfiends from another continent (the canon gahoole world). a war began in an attempt to drive the hagsfiends away as they began to wreak havoc.
the gyre souls devised a plan to seal the hagsfiends away beneath the continent using the calamity embers magic. the continent split apart into large sections of land and a whirlpooled appeared in the center where the hagsfiends were sucked in. the newly formed islands settled into place, with the island now known as 'newtopia' covering up the whirlpool so that the hagsfiends would have no way out.
the gyre souls - - -
anne, sasha, and marcy are considered gyre souls. this trio of gyre souls function differently from the canon existing gyre souls in the gahoole universe. they arent reincarnations but another generation of a trio : domino, leif, and barrel
you could say that domino replaces andrias
domino > anne (blue ember) (heart) leif > marcy (green ember) (wit) barrel > sasha (pink ember) (strength)
domino represents heart instead of leif since she plays a more significant role, especially for anne
their defining trait is their uniquely colored eyes that correlate to their respective ember.
Tumblr media
calamity embers - - -
the calamity embers were forged by the original trio : domino, leif, and barrel. each sacrificed some of their soul to embed the embers with magic. once the war was over, they went on to live what was left of their lives as they quickly grew weak. when they finally passed, their souls became dormant in the embers. however, domino became a wandering scroom to keep watch over the embers until she found another trio worthy to repossess them.
using the calamity embers, anne, sasha, and marcy are able to harness its magic and manifest the gyre souls, as well as enhance their core strengths

Silver Turncoat Ch4
Summary: Thanks to their crash landing, the P0s might be saved. Sephiroth must decide if and how he wants to continue.
Inspired by this prompt by @im-totally-not-an-alien
Please enjoy!
Chapter 4: Moving Forward
The wooden gate clattered open, pulleys activating with the same inserted key the trio had seen multiple times now. Three Rhadorans in white entered their cell fiercely, blades and firearms at the ready.
“Wait wait wait- if this is it it, can you tell Rosen to make a cup for me? Since we're not going anywhere for a while… haha…”
“Glenn, why are you like this…?” Lucia huffed as the first soldier lifted her by her arm.
“Get up.” Not a shred of mercy threatened existence in that voice. Each P0 struggled and involuntarily winced as they were pulled to their feet, some even coughing from their shifted weight alone.
“The elders have a proposition for you.” A fourth Rhadoran stood in the open gateway, the only visible difference being the slight gray of the very same cloth all their people bore. Worn down. Used. Experienced. Another silent threat if they attempted escape.
Before Glenn opened his mouth, Lucia glared and shook her head. Thankfully, he actually listened this time.
“You took mercy on Rosen and Refu. Would you be willing to help him and our people?”
“Why would we help a people that leave a child to live on an island alone?”
“Rosen decided that fate himself,” Matt interrupted and gained all the eyes in the cell. “It was his choice and his duty.”
Glenn grumbled, though the Rhadorans clearly agreed with the statement.
“Shinra is planning to exterminate us. Rosen will be the last to die once those greedy bastards spot the smoke.”
“Exterminate?” Lucia couldn't contain her confusion.
Matt shook his head. “Our orders were to find suitable land for a mako reactor and clear the area. Nothing more.”
“And what did you think would happen when your company attempted to build a reactor in our sacred temple?”
“Sacred?” The leader countered. “Those ruins are abandoned! They’re falling apart!”
“Those ‘ruins’, as you call them, mark the land of the greatest mana source on the island.”
“The mako concentration…” The ‘professor’ mumbled in realization.
“Precisely. And your company has no more use for you. You will die here for their greed, or you can take your chances with our word.”
It made sense. Perfect sense. Everything Rosen spoke of was true. And every assumption about Shinra wasn't far enough off.
“...What’s this proposition?” their leader questioned.
The gray Rhadoran held his hands behind his back. “We have reason to believe Shinra is developing a bioweapon, since they failed at creating a brute force weapon.”
“What are you talking about?”
“We have a few scouts on Shinra ships. They heard rumors of a new SOLDIER class. Why do you think we sent so many of our warriors to combat three of you?”
Their eyes widened.
“You thought they would send him… the golden child. The boy hero. The one man army. To save us?”
“To silence us.” The gray warrior made a small gesture, and the guards restraining the P0s loosened their grips. “SOLDIER failed. We’ve turned Shinra’s former weapons against them. The next logical step is to use their so-called science department and create a weapon no one has seen before. But that’s only an assumption and a rumor. We ask you three to find out if this assumption is true and report back to us. That is all.”
“...that’s it?” The woman’s voice broke the silence.
“Think it over.” Another gesture and the three P0s were slowly lowered to the ground. “We'll return tomorrow. Have an answer by then.” The superior glanced up to his men. “Bring bread and water. They will need their strength regardless of their answer.”
* * *
Three nights had ended. Three suns had risen. Three days had passed since Sephiroth put his faith in this mysterious blond stranger, the man who claimed to know the location of his mother. To know a name he never heard. To know a past painful and impractical. Impossible.
But he wouldn't deny the chance to see her. He needed to know.
“We'll be in Junon tomorrow,” Cloud mentioned, observing the final mountain between them and the port city. The remaining hilly plains would be a breeze to traverse. The sun hung low, bathing the land in sparkling orange light. “We'll rest tonight and enter during the day. Then we'll stop for new clothes, change in a public bathroom, and bribe our way onto the ship.”
“Would Shinra notice our change of clothes? Our odd uniforms will bring enough attention.”
“Unless they know exactly which camera to look at, they won’t know what we did until we're near Cosmo Canyon. …I hope.” Shinra must have been searching for Sephiroth by now. The effectiveness of that search would be tested in the port city as well as vacation town across the ocean.
“We take the chance. If our gamble fails, can we hijack the airship in Upper Junon?”
“Do you know how to fly it?”
“...No. Nevermind then.”
“What if we jump down from the cannon?”
“If we're on the cannon, it's already too late. All of Shinra will know we are there. ”
Cloud hummed. He knew this was a risk long before beginning this task, but with their enemies so close, they could not afford a single mistake.
“There's a cave half way up.” Sephiroth gestured. “We shouldn't risk a fire tonight.”
“...We have to be ‘very efficient’ tonight.” Cloud didn't want to say exactly what that meant. The teen knew anyway. “And we must hide your sword before we leave tomorrow.”
“Understood.”
The forested valley between the two and their shelter held many breeds of monsters. They remained deathly silent the moment any creature dared attack them for their presence, fighting fiercely and fluidly. Close but untouching, their even strength and speed felled every threat between them and their next campsite.
Cloud saved all edible meat and useful leather. Sephiroth waited without fidgeting as he scanned the immediate area. After packing everything away, they entered the crevice.
No fire. No light. One tent. One bedroll. No new meals. Leftovers only.
“Sephiroth.”
There was a pause. The Golden Child stood close to the mouth of the cave, staring ahead. He did not speak, slowly unsheathing his sword.
Cloud understood and allowed the child as long as he needed.
Inhuman eyes scanned every inch of the manufactured blade, manufactured specifically for him. Unique. Alone. Just like him, even within the dozens of other blades Shinra made him test. Mythril Type-0 Katana. Prototype Crimson Blade. CC Alloy Sword. Shinra Blade: Model I. Some enhanced materia potency. Some were thinner for precise critical damage. However, the weapon in his hand was simple. No special gimmicks. No secret ability. Only his own skill and his own expertise. His nameless blade could be replaced by anything, and the sword Cloud gifted him was undeniably well made. He would show his skill in other ways.
“I’ll bury this and return in a moment.”
The blond did not stop him. “Go ahead. I’ll watch your back and whistle if I see anything.”
Sephiroth nodded before leaving the cave.
Cloud let out a soft sigh as he surveyed the area. Did Sephiroth feel joy in any moment of his life? As a child, Cloud made the incredibly wrong assumption that Sephiroth’s entire existence was filled with the joy propaganda implied it to be. How could someone be sad after a thousand victories? Of course Cloud understood now.
When the silver soldier returned, they ate their meal, the tent’s fabric door zipped closed to give the slightest perception of shelter from the wilderness. Through the noise of animals calling came the chopping of helicopter blades, most likely air traffic from Junon. Hopefully. Hopefully it wasn’t a search party for them. Cloud finished his piece first, watching as the teen took uncharacteristically small bites. The silence was deafening this evening.
“What’s on your mind?”
Sephiroth held the piece away, not daring to take another bite until he answered. “...you once said you did this to save me.”
“I did.”
“You assumed to know my life.”
“Well… I know certain things, but-”
“Did you know this was to be my first real mission?”
Cloud’s mouth snapped open in confusion.
“I was to exterminate the people of Rhadore to make way for mako engineers. Everything needed to be perfect. Fast. Efficient. Effective. No lives lost on our side, even the P0s already on the archipelago.” He lowered his head, but Cloud couldn’t focus on his apparent grief.
“What are you talking about?”
“Shinra manufactured my achievements to sell the SOLDIER program and change their recruitment policy. Rhadore was going to be my first field assignment and they would promote everything I did there to push the program through.”
“Wait, if this is your first assignment then what about-?”
Sephiroth shook his head, cutting him off. “All lies. Every last one of them.”
Cloud stared with large mako blue eyes, bewildered and frustrated and desperate for answers to a question he didn’t mean to allow escape. “What did they do to you…?”
The silver teen turned away.
The blond did the same.
“...I’ll take the first shift.” Sephiroth made his way out of the tent.
“Are you sure?”
“Positive. Get some rest, Cloud.”
He nodded and zipped the tent closed behind the golden child. Guilt ate at Cloud’s mind as he attempted to rest. He was wrong. He was so wrong. He should’ve kept his stupid mouth shut. But if this was truly before Sephiroth’s first mission, then that severely increased his chances to save everything. And Sephiroth gave that information up without prompting. Was the boy… What was he trying to do?
Outside the tent, Cloud heard the softest whisper, the softest chant leaving Sephiroth’s lips, one he wouldn’t be able to hear without his mako and SOLDIER enhancements. He glanced up and tried to discern Sephiroth’s stance from the shadow against the tent wall. The silver soldier was holding something delicately in front of his face.
“Lucrecia Crescent… Lucrecia Crescent…”
Only one night until Junon.

To be continued…

how did you calculate the adult trio's bday? 😮
Hi Anon! Thanks for asking me this question! I was actually hoping that someone would have asked me this and I’m glad it came sooner than I expected. Well to answer your question, it was mainly fun and easy to find Hisoka’s and Chrollo’s but a bit tricky with Illumi’s. I don’t fully trust what the anime gives us as numbers so I mainly relied on the manga. So to find out their birthdates I decided to first find solid concrete evidence of the year this was all taking place in.
Illumi and Hisoka partook in the 287th hunter exam with the main four which was back in 1999. I found the year thanks to chapter 146 where Killua exits Greed Island to apply for the hunter exam a second time and we see a sign hanging from a store building which gave us the exact year of when this was all occurring as well as the month and the day. According to the sign, the date is said to be December 29th, 1999.
Tumblr media
The 287th hunter exam, just like any other hunter exams, starts on January 7th so the hunter exam arc all the way to Greed Island arc takes place in 1999.
Now that I had the year, all I had to do now was find the adult trio’s respective birth years.
How I found Hisoka’s birth year.
EDIT: okay so due to the fact that I made a slight mistake on Hisoka’s birthday, (I thought his actual age came from the databook when in reality his age was never mentioned in there) that meant I wasn’t actually able to find out his canonical birth year I’m so sorry I should’ve been more aware on the fact that his ‘birthday’ was just a fan theory and nothing more. This man is such a mystery even his own birthday is an enigma. I took off his supposed birth year from the list though so that should be better now.
Hisoka’s was the easiest of the three.
His full official birthday was already listed and placed with the main four’s birthdays so there was no need to search for his for very long. His birthday completely aligns with the main four’s birthdays as well (Leorio -> March 3 3/3, Kurapika -> April 4th 4/4, Gon -> May 5th 5/5, Hisoka -> June 6 6/6, Killua -> July 7th 7/7).
How I found Chrollo’s birth year.
Chrollo’s was actually pretty fun to find.
In chapter 95, he talks to Neon about her ability and gives her what she needs in order to activate her ability. He gave her his full name, birthday and blood type. When Neon finally saw his answers, she comments on how old he actually is when she saw that the man was 26 years old.
Tumblr media
Since this scene took place in Yorknew City during September in the same year of 1999, I simply calculated his birth year thanks to his age (so all I pretty much had to do was do 1999 - 26 = 1973).
How I found Illumi’s birth year.
Illumi’s was a bit puzzling in the beginning but I did find it.
Unlike Chrollo’s (where his age has already been shown in the manga), Illumi’s age nor his birth year ever appears in the story. So I had to rely on another reliable source that could help me -> “The HxH Hunter Association Official Issue: Hunter’s Guide: Character & World Official Databook”. Thankfully, the book was able to give me his age which was 24 years old when he took the 287th hunter exam. So now all I had to do was calculate the year we first see him and what his age was at the time (1999 - 24 = 1975).
And there we go! I hope my explanation for each of them was easy to understand.
If you also want to find out how I found the year in which the 287th hunter exam took place in with more details, then go look here.
Hope this helped!

Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) dir. Ishiro Honda
Contains some spoilers.
“a world built on mutual trust.”
i love Mothra. Mothra is easily my favorite kaiju from the Godzilla canon and has been since i was a kid. there’s something compelling to me about the idea of coexisting with a giant benevolent moth.
Eiji Tsuburaya, who i first became familiar with through Ultraman, did an amazing job with the effects in the film. the Mothra puppets are beautiful and i loved seeing the larvae wriggle around. apparently one of Godzilla’s suit actors briefly caught on fire and just kept moving forward with the scene. that’s nuts! it looks great.
i believe that Mothra vs Godzilla is one of the last times, if not the last time, that we see Godzilla as a primary antagonist during the Showa era. it is kind of interesting to note that Godzilla, in this film, doesn’t emerge as an outright villain— a lot of the damage he causes, at least initially, seems to be incidental, caused by his tail getting caught on something or just by being underfoot. it’s not until the JSDF begins firing at him, attempting to electrocute him, and dropping what appears to be napalm on him that he really directs his anger and violence towards people.
truthfully, the majority of the violence in this film comes from the human characters themselves. the plot is kicked off by human greed: when a mysterious giant egg washes ashore, Kumayama, a sleazy businessman, is quick to claim ownership over it and begins plotting out ways he can use this to generate wealth. the most violent moment in the film occurs between Kumayama and Jiro Torahata, his wealthy financial backer. Kumayama, enraged that he has lost almost all of his money while Torahata has bled him dry, beats the crap out of him. when Kumayama turns his back on him, Torahata shoots him dead. this is the only scene where we see blood and human death!
of course, as is the case with the original 1954 godzilla film, the consequences of nuclear bombing cast a long shadow over the entire plot. before Mothra’s egg washes ashore, a young news photographer, Junko Nakanishi, discovers a substance along the shoreline that turns out to be highly radioactive. Mothra’s fairies explain that their homeland, Infant Island, was destroyed by a-bomb testing. when Nakanishi and two of her colleagues go to infant island to beg the inhabitants for mothra’s help fighting off Godzilla, we see the results of that destruction, and the trio is initially harshly turned away in part because of the inhabitants’ rage at their homeland being used by outsiders as a nuclear testing ground. Godzilla, as we know, continues to stand in as a metaphor for nuclear weaponry. the director, Ishiro Honda, apparently wanted to depict the destruction of infant island in a more graphic way but was limited by budget constraints— in “Ishiro Honda: a life in film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa,” he is quoted as saying, “the first island scene was supposed to be more… realistic… as a director, i should have been more stubborn.” nevertheless, his message is clear.
the film is unfortunately marred for me by the midcentury exoticization of the Pacific. Infant Island, being in the South Pacific, is inhabited by Japanese actors in obvious brownface, some clad in an approximation of woven skirts worn by dancers from a variety of Polynesian cultures, some wearing approximations of feather cloaks worn by royals or chiefs in some Pacific cultures, and a select few wearing something reminiscent of the regalia worn by various Igorot peoples in the Philippines (who, for the record, are not Pacific Islanders). of course, there’s nothing we can do about it now in 2023, but it is something worth noting, and that's really what affected my rating. i will say it did give me great pleasure to see the main characters being scolded by the islanders though.
Mothra vs Godzilla’s strength lies in the latter portion of the film when Godzilla and Mothra really start brawling, and i think it’s worth watching at the very least for that. there’s hope at the core of it, a hope that we can learn from our past as humanity and work to build a better world, that still resonated with me today. in the end, who doesn’t want to see Mothra dragging Godzilla around by his tail?
i watched the film in Japanese with English subtitles.

Z-King: Hey in the human kids Trio AU do you think Eren would be jealous around Jack after hearing some the things Jack did including being trusted with the Key to Vector Sigma and heard from Miko and Ralf that Ratchet said Jack was a lot like Optimus?
TFP Kids Part 1
TFP Kids Part 2
Hm...I think it would be a mixed reaction. Because Eren was already aware of Jack, Miko, and Raf before they arrived to the AOP world in this timeline. Optimus told Eren about Earth and them in one of the Oneshot chapters on Ao3. Megatron alludes to them during the coup when he and Eren are having that fight. Megatron calls them a threat, and he believes it. Hell, Jack had the chance to kill him in the mine but chose not to.
But I think that Eren would be jealous of all three kids for different reasons. Not because Jack got entrusted the key to Vector Sigma, Miko killing an Insecticon by herself, or Raf giving Decepticon tech experts the run around.
No, he'd be jealous of them, because they are living the freest lives possible! Jack, Miko, and Raf are from a world where titans don't exist. There's no Marley or Eldia. They live in a place where food is not only in abundance, but even in excess. Miko wasn't even born in the US. She's from another continent. On top of that, they get to know someone as amazing as Optimus and even help end a war. But he gets to know them and he thinks they're amazing. It's just hard to be jealous of someone like them, but compared to the island, he thinks that they live in a paradise.
As the 104th and the kids are bonding, Eren kind of does bring it up as a pass in thought, saying that they must be living a life so grand and amazing. And then, to Eren's surprise, they all start busting out laughing.
"Look, buddy, we love our home!" Miko cackled, "But it's not all it's cracked up to be!"
"But there are no titans, no one threatening to destroy you because of who you are-,"
"Even when there is no massive threats to our home like titans, or even Megatron, humanity is it's own worst enemy," Jack explained, "Racism, sexism, climate change, nuclear warfare."
"Defunding of the arts, censorship in media, right-wing ass hats-!"
"Miko, take a breath," Jack interrupted her, earning a scowl from the human Wrecker.
"The displacement of thousand upon thousands of people due to the overall greed of capitalism," Rafael continued, "People are either forced out of their homes or have no choice but to flee, and a select few people have billions of dollars that they don't need."
"After my dad left us, me and my mom were living paycheck to paycheck for a time," Jack explained, "I had to learn to grow up and be responsible so she didn't have to worry about me. I even got a job because I didn't want to ask her for stuff and bother her with things when she already has enough to deal with."
"It's shit like this that kinda makes you think to just let the Decepticons destroy us," Miko proclaimed as she took a sip of her wine, "It's not like humans were making Earth better anyway!"
"We...we had no idea," Armin spoke.
"It's fine," Jack said, "We all just have our own set of problems. Just because one place has more, doesn't mean that they have it all together. Hell, we thought the Autobots were amazing when we first met them, but we met them when they were at war. An advanced civilization like them was at war. No one place is perfect. We're always fighting about something."
Eren has to privately re-examine his own assumptions about them and about Earth after that.

'While Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese have some shared history when it comes to the Oscars, the 2024 Academy Awards are likely to make this even more pronounced. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer looks like a potential frontrunner for the Oscar for Best Picture, though Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon could be an upset. Oppenheimer was a smash hit at the box office, whereas Killers of the Flower Moon underperformed given its large budget, but Scorsese’s movie earned widespread acclaim for its trio of stellar central performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone...
Nolan is still waiting for an Oscar win after nominations for Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Original Screenplay.
Christopher Nolan & Martin Scorsese Have Never Competed Against Each Other For The Oscars
Even when Nolan and Scorsese’s Oscar hopefuls arrived in the same year, they didn't match categories.
Before 2023, only two other years saw the release of both Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan movies. In 2006, Scorsese had The Departed and Nolan had The Prestige. The former received five Oscar nominations while the latter earned two, yet none of these overlapped in the same category, as The Departed wasn't recognized for its cinematography or art direction, whereas Nolan's film was.
The other year before 2023 that saw the release of Scorsese and Nolan movies was 2010. This time, Scorsese’s Shutter Island wasn't an Oscar nominee at all, while Nolan’s Inception was. Interestingly, both were Leonardo DiCaprio vehicles that saw the actor spend most of the movie inside his mind, but Shutter Island proved too pulpy for the Oscars.
...the battle between Nolan and Scorsese for Best Director in 2024 will be hard-fought. Although this would be Scorsese’s second success, this would amount to only two of his 26 movies winning. In contrast, Nolan earning an Oscar for Best Director would be his first win in 12 movies...
Killers of the Flower Moon has a good shot at winning Best Picture, Best Director, or both at the 2024 Oscars. This would be Scorsese's second of his career, but his first in 17 years. Meanwhile, a win for Oppenheimer would be Nolan's first in either category. Therefore, both could reasonably be seen as redemption wins for the Academy not recognizing the pair sooner...
Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer seems to be the stronger contender for the Oscar for Best Picture, as the movie proved a huge success at the box office. Oppenheimer grossed almost $1 billion despite its three-hour runtime, an achievement that Killers of the Flower Moon couldn’t hope to repeat. In contrast, the much more expensive Martin Scorsese movie earned only $154.4 million on a budget of $200 million...
That said, Oppenheimer will have struggles of its own. Nolan’s movie was famously criticized for failing to depict the impact of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s infamous invention in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The thorny ethical question of whether Oppenheimer should have depicted the bombings is divisive, and this sort of discourse may hurt its Best Picture prospects. Of course, if the Oscars want to avoid controversial picks, they would need to steer clear of Scorsese’s movie, too. Killers of the Flower Moon’s story focuses on the murder of Native Americans by power-hungry sociopaths and, while its post-colonial critique of capitalist greed is commendable, the movie's brutal violence received criticism.
The biggest obstacles blocking both Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer from earning either Best Picture or Best Director are their filmmakers, their budgets, and their high profiles. The Oscars have shone a light on less-seen movies in recent years. In 2023, the Academy highlighted an effort from a smaller studio with Everything Everywhere All at Once’s win for Best Picture. In 2022, CODA was a surprise winner given its low profile. In 2019, Parasite’s success saw the movie become the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture. Within this context, it is hard to argue that Nolan and Scorsese constitute outsiders or underdogs.
Whether it's Oppenheimer’s $100 million price tag or the $200 million budget of Killers of the Flower Moon, both movies went big as their directors were ambitious with lengthy projects. Both movies are stuffed with megastars and, although Oppenheimer features more famous faces, Killers of the Flower Moon tapped two of cinema’s biggest living actors. As such, no commentator could call either movie a surprise winner or an upset, and this is the quality that the Oscars have recently been prioritizing. While Christopher Nolan might win at the Oscars and Martin Scorsese is a little less likely to earn his second statuette, both directors may leave the 2024 Oscars disappointed.'
