Batmarch: The Secret Origin of Batman's Trophys (Comission for WeirdKev27)
Hello all you happy people and welcome back to Batmarch, or celebrations of all things that go bump in the dark knight
Today we've got a special treat... and i'm not just talking the nice art Kev had comissioned! Looks really good and I really appcirated it. Thank you KEv and thank you Alan Patreon. It was a nice suprise gift.
As for what this is about, this was a fantastic idea Kev cooked up: the batcave is one of the coolest hero bases in all of fiction. The layout is never 100% consitant across media but your usually guaranteed a batmobile, a big ass computer at the center, water falls, and over time a display for various costumes from past sidekicks, alternate outfits etc.
What really spruces the place up are three distinct decorations that we almost always see in the comics and ocasionally in other media, if not live action since these bitches would be expensive to make: A giant dinosaur, a big ole penny, and a giant playing card of a joker. These three are staples of the bat cave, to the point when the original was caved in during the earthquakes that ravaged gotham in the build up to no man's land, Bruce made a point of fishing them out for the new cave he built after that traumatic year.
Yet most of us.... have no idea where he got these wonderful toys. Even I didn't. The Joker Card comes from an obvious grinning source, but what CASE did it come from? Where did he get that dinosaur? What was someone using that giant Penny for? It's a question i've asked once or twice but never looked into. Kevin did though, and while the through and lovely DC wiki helped him find each one, he went the extra mile, asking for a review. And I was entirely on board with this comission as I just.. never had those answers and I doubt i'm the only one whose wondered what the context for these things were. So today we're looking at three disntinct golden age batman stories, at a time when goofy nonsense reigned supreme, logic was optional, and weird shit like this was just another day in the batcave. IN other words, this is going to be a LOT of fun so join me under the cut as we look at gambling themed death traps, penny obessed gangsters and batman being hunted by the most dangerous game: mechanical dinosaurs.
The Giant Joker Playing Card:
(from Batman #44)
I love these old titles, such flair and cheese. It's incredible.
Anyways this one starts because Joker decides to hit an off the books casnio after his win. Luckily for them, he just wants to play which feels entirely like a joker move: instead of robbing an easy target that can't call the cops and that the mafia presumibly running it would be stupid to retaliate on, he decides "fuck it let's try this whole gambling thing men, sounds like a hoot and a half".
And sure enough.. it goes really well. He spends what's implied to be the whole night just winning and winning until he cleans house. This being the joker this gambling bug can only end one way
I just.. love everything about this. Joker just had fun at a casnio and turned it into a death trap. It's such a brilliant setup.. and one that while nicely goofy, is also well done: it fits the joker's unpredictablity to just go a gamblin and it fits him just as much to turn a new hobby into a death trap. I also love Lewis' reaction calling it SUPERGAMBLING., like he's some gambling expert and most dangerous game shit is a type of gambling.. which given we're in the dc universe, you probably DO need a name for this kind of thing in the crime world.
So he set shte perfect trap: he has a random balding middle aged man tell the two he has info on a recent raidum theft, raidum a hospital badly needs. To save the presumed orphans about to die without eating their radium, Batman and Robin go to a sketchy island with one house perched on a hill
The World's Greatest Detective.. sees NOTHING wrong with this and goes ahead and gets caught in the most devious trap imaginable.
Several head injuries later, our heroes wake and joker reveals the radium theives, who he captured for this scheme but have kept the radium's location to themselves. This is by deisgn: the joker wants the two and their "radium screts" as the ante here, along with Robin to make sure Batman does this. Batman repedately states "I don't gamble' as if logic suddenly works on the clown man who set up a gambling death trap, so Joker reveals if Batman won't play his three supergambling games, he'll just kill the hostages. Batman reluctantly agrees,
Game 1 is super pinball.
But when Batman proves to be an expert at the snes Joker goes with plan b.. his giant pinball table of death. Sorry his giant SUPER pinball table of death.
As you can see the same joker face from the card is here and you see it all over his lable. it seemed to be Joker's logo back the. I love this whole setup and mostly show it not only because it' sdope but because those pins must've been what bumpers were. I also had no idea PInball used to be a gambling thing. Makes sense, it's just fun to find out.
The game goes well mostly though one of the guys nearly slams into a pin. Thankfully Robin is an expert gymnist and batman smartly saved laucnhing robin till the last minute and Dick's able to save the goon.
Game two is super rolling some dice, which apparently used to land on numbers. This yugioh style death game involves our bait being tied to polls on three of the numbers. If Batman guesses wrong, someone dies. Or maybe not since the board is pretty damn big. Not every death trap can be super murder pinball. Batman spots some mud on the dice though and correctly guesses they'll pivot. This is the weakest of the death traps here, a bit convolunted, not really guranteed to be as deadly. I know the chance of nothing happening is part of it.. but with pinball there's really almost no chance you won't hit the bumpers. Here it feels like pure luck or simple cheating that both dice flew at the joker.
Next game and the one that introduces our prop, though the dice apparently are also in the cave sometimes which I love. The game is a game of cards.. batman has to correctly guess which face matches the door Robin and the hostage goons are in or they'll choke to death on the deadly gas released inside.. and naturally he figures out it's the Joker card. It's too joker not to work.
Turns out though, naturally the joker isn't playing fair both having a final one on one game ofr him and Batman and having his goon go to get robin behind the joker card door... and Robin dispatches him hilaroiusly and awesomely
With that the hostages are free and the final death game begins. A giant super roulette wheel with both batman and joker getting in a slot. looser gets crushed alive. It's an awesome finale, and it fits joker to put himself at risk: after all he risks his life all the time why wouldn't he for such a fun gag?
Batman's able to get the wheel to turn fairly and then escape it, leading to a chase. THe Radium Theives agree to give themselves and the radium up but there's still the matter of the joker and we get a short but neat final chase as Joker uses the dice against the heroes then jumps off a cliff, gambling his life one last time.. and rightfully batman isn't betting on the joker having died.
Gamble With Doom is an excellent story. While the trophy we get out of it is only in it briefly the story itself is pure fun. It has some fun dated elements like Bruce's opinon gambling is EVILLLL and the old fashioned designs on the traps, but it's pure fun. The traps are clever, the tension palpable and the climax great. The gambling motif's really fit the joker and it adds up to an all time great joker story with a suprise impact. The Trophy Itslef. is barely in it but Robin DID break a guy's face with it so i'll say it was still cave worthy.
(From World's Finest #30)
The Penny Plunderer is a name I had heard but had no real context for. I assumed he was some goofy silver age villian with pennies for eyes who drove around chucking pennies at everyone.
I am an artiste.
Instead it's just a guy in a suit. He has the backstory of any good golden or silver age villian to justify his gimmick
I love.. everything about this backstory. It reads like if a writer was given the thought exercise "Make the pettiest batman villian origin you can find.". I mean other villians gimmicks make sense: Poison Ivy was a botonist, Mr Freeze had a horrible accident, the penguin was born looking like a penguin with a lot of money, the Joker fell into a vat of chemicals and came out a clwon, the riddler liked puzzles.
Here Joe just... got screwed over by pennies a lot. Even funnier is that the last one has nothing to do with pennies. Like.. even if it'd had nickels he'd still be arrested.
So Joe vows since pennies runied his life, he'l lbecome the penny! Sadly this does not mean him dressing up like a giant penny with a cane and top hat.. nad now I can't show you it that last drawing put me too far behind and... oh fuck it.
Instead he just wears a suit but makes his gimmick pennies. Commit to the bit man. I do get it as some golden age villians were just guy in a suit, even Joker and Penguin technically counts but one is a clown and the other is a rich penguin man. They have mor ethan just "suit and a vendetta against pennies that somehowturns into stockholm syndrome.
So the penny plunderer begins his reign of terror, setting up a penny arcade as a front, and cashing in a roll of pennies in the most diabolical scheme ever devised by man.
A true criminal mastermind.
Batman picks up on this pattern because it's what he does and finds his next case, a coin and stamp exibiton with a rare one cent stamp. It's here we meet the reason we're here: the giant penny!
Yeah to my shock the penny had NOTHING to do with the penny plunderer other than being at the site of one of his robberies. He prefered just.. chucking pennies at people.. which is awesome and a truly great tactic only topped by Batman's use of said giant penny
I adore the fact that this iconic artifact is there not because it was seized from the villians or a police options.. but because, presumibly, Bruce thought this penny he found was kick ass and bought it off it's actual owner.
Most of the theives escape but they find one willing to squeal. Unfortunatley he dies for his hubris
Yup bet you weren't expecting the penny guy to kill someone and to see his corpse weren't you but here you are. Also batman is apparently a cop now. George Lopez tried to warn us...
But we didn't listen! We didn't listen!
A fight breaks out at the gambling parlour and we get two of the best moments in batman history that much like the blue beetle film, ar ehighly underated.
I just.. I get the sense that is how batman ALWAYS plays pinball. Just judo kicks it every time even as bruce wayne. Both bruce wayne and batman have been banned from so many arcades.. often the same ones. Perks of having a secret identity. We then get coyne once again THROWING pennies at someone and it working. I don't know why he hasn't been brought back with the telkeentic ability to contorl pennies. Give him a copper helmet and a proper costume and oh dammit..
Then Joe knocks batman out iwth his one weakness: a roll of pennies. He's trapped them in the parlor for your standard batman death trap, having removed their belts and ripped out the phone lines as usual. He then throws them a few pennies when then prove to be a mistake as it's time for SCIENCE WITH DR. BATMAN, who uses one old penny, copper, and one new penny, zinc to make a battery. Good thing jimmy didn't wish it away THIS week.
The cops arrive to free one of hteir own and batman finds a clue once the parlor is cleared of gas. Turns out Coyne was catering a penny slot party for a rich billinoare's houseboat, and naturally their filled with gas. I swear it's always gas with these golden age villians. Get another knockout device fellas.
With that our final chase enses as Batman and robin chase Coyne and while he nearly bests them with a good game of 1940's donkey kong
He's foiled by his own gimmick: he has only pennies but the pay telephone.. dosen't.. take 5 seperate pennies for some reason? the hell? I get payphones not taking pennies once they went up to a quarter but come the fuck on 1940's payed telephones. he's foiled.. and sentenced to death.
Yes folks that's the cannoical till some lucky fellow brings him back fate of the penny plunderer: PUT TO DEATH.
This story is as you can tell nonsense that's only gotten more hilarious with the passage of time and I loved every page on it and on getting the panels for this review, I only found MORE hilaroius nonsense to laugh at. We have a story where a guy with a penny gimmick smacks batman with a roll of pennies, trips robin with more, kills a man without pennies, is foiled by pennies yet somehow dosen't actually use the giant penny that's the only reason people know he exists. It's beautiful bollocks and worth your time.
(From Batman #35)
As I hope you are, this issue had me hooked from the first panel: Batman vs dinosaurs being forced to fashion a bow and arrow for some reason. Yes... fuck. Yes. Also nice of bruce to eat Ollie's lunch.
Okay so this story starts, as many real life stories do, with a billionare having a zany idea; Mr. Hart is a man who puts on shows: ice follies, aqua carnival, 40's razzle dazzle type stuff. For his latest idea though he's going above and beyond: a DINOSAUR ISLAND. With mechancail dinosaurs and cavemen who throw giant sponges at you. Thankfully spongebob wasn't born yet but his great great grandpappys quarepants did the honors. Honorable old fool.
To ramp up the insanity, Mr Hart is inviting a club of big game hunters to eat mammoth steak with batman.
If that weren't enough, and in any other golden age story it might be... our heroes get CHALLENGED at dinner by one of the rich assholes. Yeah turns out rich assholes who hunt innocent animals for sport and eat reheated mammoth aren't the most stable indviduals and Mr. Breech scoofs at the fact Mr. Hart says Man is the most dangerous game. He's hunted man, they went down like cowards. COWARDS. He feels Batman couldn't hut a dinosaur without his gadgets, and certainly not his bare hands... even though as this issue with prove and has already shown early man had tools.
To prove his point he challenges batman to a fucking challenge: survive on Dinosaur Island: no utility belt, no vehicles. If the dinosaurs touch him he looses. Mr Breech will man the controls. Honestly i'm convinced Breech knew hart well enough to know he'd both agree to this for the publiclity and why he'd invite batman and robin and just wants to play iwth giant mechanical dinosaurs and also batman. Which granted if I were invited to this sort of thing i'd also want to chase batman with mechanical dinosaurs for fun, who wouldn't, so I totally get it and respect the game.
Hart is on board, offering 5000 to the winner's charity and Batman is like "Why the bat-fuck not. Let's go".
Now you might suspect Breech's real motive is trying to kill batman. I mean you have a setup where batman will be without his weapons, the plausable deniablity of a machine malfunction and a secluded island with 24 hours to kill the batman. And you'd shockingly be wrong. Breech really just wants to prove dinosaurs are the most dangerous game so when that Jurassic Park he's working on opens no one will object to him hunting them for sport.
But his plans are foiled by Chase, anothe rich knob who wants to kill batman and robin to, as he says later form a "crime combine". So he wants a bunch of middle aged guys drinking beers to yell at him for not training the joker on tackling well enough. I see.. well played.
So the game is afoot and our heroes take a bit to catch up, first brushing off a real rock among the sponge rocks as a mistake. Theis ends when a Triceratops to trismash them into a tree. Batman calls for a war council on a nearbye island but naturally THAT'S NO ISLAND
Batman fought a mechanical fucking seamonster. That.. that's cannon. To almost every batman timeline. God bless you Golden Age, god, bless, youuuu. Also i'd be stupid if I didn't say that Tally Ho, Batman! is one of the greatest phrases in batman history up there with "I Am the night" , "I'm batman" and "Something something joker's boner".
So now the games for their lives, Batman and Robin don't have to play fair and start fashioning bows, arrows and knives out of mechanical dinosaur bones. You know.. sometimes this job can be draining: 2-3 reviews a week, many a plan having to be delayed due to a review taking longer than expected.. but then you get a review where Batman and robin have to outrun a manical billinoare who hyjacked dinosaurs from a diffrnet billionare who was having a charity dinosaur hunt with batman and robin using a third billionare's dinosaur, while fashoining weapons from mechanical dinosaur corpses and fashion a kite from a mechanical ptreadon and remember why you love reviewing stuff so mucH: sharinng a good story with the world and finding a good one or two yourself while your at it. And thanks to Kev i've found three truly wonderful, truly bonkers batman stories, with this one being the easy winner. It's both a decent enough concept for the time and hilariously insane.
And I ddin't make up the kite thing: when, after a night of survivial, Robin brings up the batplane, Batman has an idea: since the flying dinosaurs are on a programmed pattren rather than directly controled, they can use them to make themselves a kite yor style.
So to win the day Batman has a plan: he uses himself as bait since Robin's the more agile of the two, and has robin CATAPULT HIMSELF into the air after chase, who is riding on t-rex back with an army of dinosaurs.. and how does he defeat chase' smighty dino army?
It's both genuinely clever and wonderfully bonkers: Robin defeats an evil billionare RIDING a mechanical t-rex.. with water balloons.
Also props to this story: in the previous two the trophy was impressive.. but it was taken from what felt like a minor point in the story: the card flip game was fun as was batman slammin ga door on a guy, but it's sandwitched between far more elaborate death traps, while the penny, again awesome, wasn't even something the penny plunderer used. Batman just bought it off some offscreen character to relive fond memoreies of crushign some crimianls alive with it. Here the main villian ROAD IN on the thing. Granted he still had to likely buy it off his actual owner, but this time at least a criminal actually used it as a murder weapon. I can see Batman wanting this thing for his cave.
Batman chases chase over the now still dinosaurs and punches the guy out. With this Batman's saved the day AND won the bet. 5000 for batmobiles for kids, donate your batmobile today!
As for chase...
With that our story and this trilogy comes to an end.. and as I said, it's great. check out all three of these issues their a lot of fun. Next time dc puts some up for sale I may have to get some 40's batman, this stuff is golden.
Thanks for reading
To conclude batman month: Wait'll you get a load of this

Some extra “facts” and interesting weird info about a certain self proclaimed tiger lady house cat in my TBOSAS on Crack!AU.
One of my great THG buddies was asking about Tigris Snow and her weird cheese addiction. So I just had to write some things down before I write my next short take.
Tigris Snow is extremely addicted to cheese. She’s a certified cheese addict and “cheese thief” since the day she and her little cousin (Coryo) lost their marbles after the war ended.🧀
No one knows why, but little Tigris Snow claimed that the “cheese fairies” came to her in a dream one day and saved her and her little cousin from death and starvation.
Don’t worry. Crazy Coryo Snow doesn’t mind that his poor cousin is addicted to cheese and believes in some “mythical” cheese fairies. He has his own addictions (cabbages) and problems (Highbottom & Dr. Gaul) to worry about.
In truth, Coryo’s “mythical” cabbage deities and lima bean elves commanded him to ignore the “calling of the cheese” in order to stay pretty for his sugar daddy (Sejanus).
At least both of them inherited their family’s rare ability to bargain with wild animals. They can even converse with “sacred” rabid raccoons, poisonous snakes, and wild squirrels without getting attacked.
Meanwhile, the Creeds can talk to sewer rats and fat chinchillas for some reason.
And the Ravinstills have a rare ability to command an army of Bichon Frisé puppies to do their dirty jobs for them.
Sadly, Tigris was recently fired by Fabricia Whatnot for secretly stealing and eating expensive cheese cubes and cheddar chicken sandwiches all day.
She said that her cheese fairies made her do it. A food sacrifice must be made before the “hour of the owl” in order to satisfy the ancient cheese deities of the “Golden Arches” (McDonald’s) who once ruled Panem (America) even before it existed.
Moreover, our sweet tiger was actually sewing and hiding little cheese cubes inside some of the dresses on accident purpose without Fabricia noticing. Her co-workers didn’t even know about the cheese cubes until some unfortunate lady complained about the smell.😔
That’s why our dear Tigris Snow is currently unemployed and living her best happy-go-lucky “house cat” life in Corso.
But crazy unemployed Nero Price is her worst nightmare. He’s a self proclaimed werewolf who howls at the moon all night.
She’s a poor skinny cat and Price is a crazy werewolf who runs around the city (like a wild dog) looking for rabid raccoons and Peacekeepers to fight. So it’s better for the tiger to stay home with the Grandma’am.
At least her little cousin (Coryo) buys her the best cheese tarts and sugar sticks after school (using his rich sugar daddy’s money of course).
So yeah. Tigris Snow is now the NEET (not in education, employment or training) Cat Queen in this weird universe.
However, the Grandma’am doesn’t mind. She already has big plans with old Strabo Plinth to rule Panem from the shadows after Coryo marries into the Plinth family and their fortune.
And yes, our poor malnourish looking Cabbage Boy (Coryo) is actually the real breadwinner of the family.
Coryo marrying his long time sugar daddy boyfriend (Sejanus) was the best decision he and his family ever made.🥰
At least love-struck Sejanus Plinth was willing to pay for his poor sugar baby’s bills, rent, and groceries.
So after Coryo and Seji Pie got married and had their 24 (and more) babies, crazy cat auntie Tigris decided to finally settle down and became an official cheese merchant in Corso.
She (now) even has the time to talk to her mythical cheese fairy friends without being interrupted by evil Fabricia Whatnot.
She, along with Ma Plinth also like to spend old Strabo Plinth’s filthy money on the sweetest cheesecakes and weird looking clothing hangers every weekend.
Unfortunately, Ma Plinth is the only sane person who believes in Tigris Snow’s little cheese fairy friends.
Ma even joined Tigris Snow’s little secret organization called ✨The Cult of The Golden Arches✨. But to be fair, crazy Palmyra Monty and Festus Creed are the only other official members of her cult.
Too bad. Nobody could see those little cheese fairies except for Tigris and Coryo.
However, poor crazy Coryo likes to ignore his cousin’s mythical “beasts” because he claims that his cabbage deities and lima bean elves don’t want him to bow and worship some weird annoying creatures who divided the old world with their “Golden Arches” (McDonald’s).
Reject the cheese! Bow before the cabbage!
Yeah, I know. The poor Snow cousins are unashamedly crazy and delusional with their cheese fairies, ancient food deities, sacred animals, talking cabbages, and lima bean elves.😂
But don’t be sad. Our crazy cheese tiger is still into fashion and making clothes for her little cousin and his 24 (and more) gorgeous children with Sejanus.
But selling and eating cheese is her true passion and calling (in this life anyway).🧀

Feral - Chapter One
https://inuyashasnook.tumblr.com/post/184932707221/feral-chapter-twoSo, I wrote something based on this head cannon I have where Inuyasha is actually very smart, but no one in his life has ever given him a chance to prove himself because he’s a half demon. This story idea is also heavily based on the psychological phenomenon of feral children.
This is only the second piece I do in a long time, but I hope it meets expectations! I will try to update this series once weekly and will post its updates on a scheduled time. I’m currently in the process of moving back home for the summer and starting my new summer job at a vet clinic, so once that’s settled I’ll post more info.
I’ve been editing this for the past 6 hours so I apologize for any grammar mistakes. (My s/o who was supposed to proofread it for me decided that 4000+ was too many words, so I really sincerely apologize for any mistakes!) »»———————————————- ♡ ———————————————-««
Feral: Chapter 1 // FF.net Rating: T
Next Chapter >>
Kagome let out a groan as she stretched and leaned back in her chair. She’d spent the entire day looking at her computer screen answering emails and working on her current research project. Unfortunately, it wasn’t going anywhere, and she was afraid she’d have to flunk the project altogether—thus was the life of a psychology professor at a highly competitive university. She wasn’t sure what she’d do if she couldn’t find another research thesis soon or she’d run out of funding and get in trouble with the department advisor.
The raven-haired woman glanced outside the window next to her desk and realized that it had gotten dark outside since the last time she checked.
Crap, I’ve stayed here way too late again she thought to herself.
Unhurriedly, she saved her work and turned off her monitor. As she was packing her bags to head out, she realized that she’d have to walk home since her usual ride had already left hours ago. Kouga, another of the psychology professors usually drove her home after work since the beginning of the semester. She thought he was a lovely fellow, but was a little pushy at times. Needless to say, she was grateful for everything he did for her so she didn’t press her luck and tell him to tone it down for fear she would hurt him.
As she stepped out of the building where her workplace stood, the fresh crisp air of the night filled her lungs and she breathed a sigh of relief. The young professor had been spending too much time cooped up inside her office, she felt like she would lose it one of these days.
The complete silence of the area was making her skin crawl. The street lamps gave off their weak rays of light and made her feel as if she was being watched as in a horror movie. There was no one in sight, the campus grounds deserted compared to during the day, bustling with busy students rushing to their classes.
The worst part was that her path home was only dimly lit, being a little woodsy off-road on the side of campus. The tree-filled gravel road made it hard to see where to put her footing, which often led her to trip a few times before making it to her final destination. As she made her way there, the words of her coworkers rang into her head.
“Hey, did you hear? Apparently, the campus police tried to arrest a student last night. He was acting off. I’m thinking he was probably on drugs or something because apparently, he was barking at the officers and growled at them when they tried to approach him. You know what’s the worst part? He got away! Supposedly, he jumped up on a dumpster and then onto the roof of the science building! I’d avoid walking at night alone if I were you, especially until that weirdo gets caught!” she had overheard from a professor working in the sociology department tell her friend.
But, she was almost off of school grounds now, so she was safe, right? If only life was that easy...
It wasn’t even a few minutes later when she heard some rustling sounds coming from the bushes ahead of her. She mentally kicked herself at her own childish fears and turned around quickly to face the source of the sound. Kagome was a grown woman and she wouldn’t let some childish gossip make her run home with her tail between her legs.
That didn’t stop the cold sweat from rolling down her back or the sides of her rounded face. Her heart accelerated as if it followed the rhythm of a melody played in affrettando.
The pounding in her ears stopped as did her breathing when a strange shadow emerged and walked—no, crawled towards her. It was almost dog-like in appearance and the figure was on all fours. All that was missing was a wagging tail and a long snout. She was no longer certain if what was coming towards her was a figment of her imagination, or that she was truly seeing it. The ground rustled around its footing and a low rumble permeated from the figure. Maybe all those days stuck at work were really starting to take a toll on her.
The figure, now only a few meters in front of her sat still. It had long white hair, a man-like appearance, but there was something odd about it. Tiny twitching triangular appendages adorned his crown and focused on her every movement. He was dressed in very few clothes, wearing a simple tattered cloth hung loosely around his hips. Sure, it was a strange choice of style, but nothing compared to what the man was doing–audibly sniffing the air in her direction as if he really was a dog.
Kagome’s regained the movement of her muscles as her heart still raced as she took a few steps back, praying she wouldn’t trip on anything as she blindly backed up. She was trying her best to stabilize her breathing and not hyperventilate. The raven-haired woman’s ragged breaths had the creature’s attention and its golden orbs fixed on her brown ones. His ears perked, ready to captivate any sound the frightened teacher was emitting.
The professor had read somewhere that animals could smell fear and was certain that this thing could probably sense her terror. The dribbling beads of sweat rolling off her face and shoulders down her back would make sure of that.
The man never broke eye-contact with her while he crouched lower as if to give himself leverage. The muscles in his face, shoulders, and back tense as he dropped his back-end lower than it was. Not even a split second later, he pounced right on her, white hair flowing in the wind behind him, snatching the purse she had slung over her shoulders. The young professor gasped and instinctively clutched her bag while swinging her arm towards his head with her free arm.
A loud thwack resonated in the quiet woodsy path as her limb made contact with the dog ears. A whine proceeded by a growling noise were emitted from the white-haired man as he took a few steps back away from her. White, pearlescent canines were visible as the beast curled back its lips, threatening the trembling feminine figure.
Kagome gasped as she realized that hot, crimson blood dribble down her arms. The stupid creature had drawn blood with its dagger-sharp claws.
“What do you want, you freak?” she shrieked out while rummaging inside of her bag for something to defend herself with.
The man stared directly at her with almost pitiful eyes. He said nothing, peering at her as if a wild animal was seizing up their pray. He sniffed the air a few more times in her direction.
“Is this what you want?” she blurted out as she waved a plastic container with the ham and cheese sandwich she had forgotten to eat for dinner.
The dog man’s ears perked up and he readied himself to lunge towards her again. Panicking and not knowing how to react to the situation, she thrust her free arm out with an open palm to show he shouldn’t come closer. Kagome gently threw the piece of food and it flew in a low arc just to drop at the feet of the stranger.
The creature did not waste a second more before taking hold of the plastic container as he tried to break it free of its contents. Grunts and growls could be heard from his vicinity. After a few minutes of fiddling with the container, he had resorted to claw his way through it as he tore into the sandwich.
The raven-haired woman took this chance to back away slowly from the man by a few centimeters would she have to defend herself again. She simply couldn’t understand her brain’s reasoning as to why she hadn’t taken off running the moment the opportunity arose; he mesmerized her. The beast’s white hair flowed behind him majestically and looked almost like a fantastical beast her mother would read to her about during her bedtime stories. His features carved onto his face with perfection, a feudal Japanese painting having come to life.
It had not taken long before the dog-eared figure finished his dinner and glanced back into her direction.
“Look, I’m not sure what you want, but I’m going home. I’m certain I’m hallucinating all of this, so you’re more than welcome to follow me back to my place,” the petite woman said mostly to herself.
At this point, she was certain that she had just eaten something bad back at the office and simply needed to sleep this strange event off. There was no way she’d spent her evening feeding what looked like a man with animal-like features.
Kagome walked away without looking back over her shoulder, but the figure behind her tailed her all the way back home.
»»———————————————- ♡ ———————————————-««
Kagome dropped her bag in the entrance and sloppily removed her shoes. She proceeded to flick on the light switch to the kitchen. Tomorrow was Saturday, so she didn’t have to come into work if she didn’t want to. She made her way towards the sink in the illuminated room and grabbed herself a glass of water.
Golden eyes met milk chocolate ones as she glanced in the doorway's direction, where her new imaginary friend stood, seemingly lost.
“Look, I’m not sure why you’re not answering, but you can sleep on the couch. I have more leftovers in the fridge if you want some. Make yourself at home.”
By this point, she was certain she’d officially hit insanity, so she was just making a game of whatever her sleep-deprived brain was making her hallucinate.
Without even looking back, she waved at him and left the kitchen to make her way towards her bedroom. She locked the door for extra precaution and changed out of her work attire. Kagome slipped on a pair of kitten printed pajamas and crawled under the soft duvet cover of her bed.
If she did the math correctly, she’d only slept 20 hours combined throughout her work week which was enough to make her lose her marbles she decided. It was about time she went to bed.
»»———————————————- ♡ ———————————————-««
Light rays peeked into the cracks of the closed curtains, enough to stir the woman of her slumber. Her body wasn’t accustomed to sleeping more than a few sporadic hours at a time, explaining why she was up so early on a Saturday.
The woman rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and slowly removed the covers, inviting the cold air to wrap itself around her cold limbs. As she peered to the side, she noticed the white strands of hair splayed all over the bed, its owner slowly grunting as the source of the heat was being peeled away from his body.
She shrieked and jumped out of bed. The figure slowly came to and gave her the most dumbfounded look she had ever seen.
A million thoughts a second were going through her still sleep laden brain. First, the man had not been a figment of her imagination. He was truly there. Second, the man was nearly naked and had crawled with her into bed. She was so out of it, never hearing the soft padding of his barren feet make his way into her bedroom over the course of the night. Wait a second-
“How did you get in here? I locked the door,” she barked at him while pointing her index finger in his direction hastily.
The dog ears folded back as the woman yelled at him. The creature backed away a few centimeters from her accusatory tone but stopped there and stood his ground. He let out a few guttural growls and barred his sharp canines towards her, not scaring her in the slightest. It seemed he didn’t like to get woken up from his sleep.
“Look, you can’t just come into my bedroom,” she retorted and stomped towards the hallway to get some fresh air and process what had just occurred. Kagome slammed the door behind her as she exited her own bedroom.
This was just all too much for her to deal with at the moment.
She ambled down the hall and descended the flight of stairs towards the dining area. What waited for her in the kitchen was a sight she would never have envisioned if it were not directly in front of her. Packaging, leftover garbage, and various pieces of food decorated her grey kitchen titles everywhere she glanced—nearly every piece of food in her kitchen was devoured and their remnants, littering the floor.
She couldn’t take it anymore. The sight had exasperated her. Kagome beelined towards the nearest chair at the dining room table and sank into it. Every muscle and fiber in her petite body seemed to weigh a ton at that exact moment. She rested her forehead directly onto the cold wooden surface and folded her arms in front of her. Her breathing hitched and slowly, tears rolled down her plump cheeks. After a few seconds of quiet tears, they crescendoed into sobs that racked her tiny frame. Between her work, her failing research project and now this, she wasn’t sure just how much more she could take of this crap. It was all too much; her world was crashing around her.
Little did she know; the smell of the salty tears had attracted a certain half-demon to the kitchen. The man took a few tentative steps towards the crying figure, crouched down on all fours in a strange makeshift sitting position and whined softly. This was enough to get the woman’s attention and to get her to open her dark brown eyes. She turned to face in his direction while still resting one cheek on the table and looked at his disheveled face. She unfolded her arms and extended her right one towards the top of his head, seeking comfort from the small triangular appendages. They reminded her so much of her childhood cat Buyo’s.
The stranger seemed taken aback at the sign of affection and backed away a few steps. What could this woman be up to, anyway? Weren’t humans supposed to be chasing him with pitchforks and constantly yelling at him? What was this raven-haired woman trying to do to him?
She approached her hand slowly in his direction, letting him give her a sniff before resting her open palm atop his soft mane. He closed his eyes and leaned into her touch, letting out what seemed nearly like a purr. This was the closest the two had gotten since their encounter and the only time she didn’t find herself yelling at him.
“Who are you? What are you even?” she muttered to herself, stroking the soft fur that adorned his ears.
It was enough self-pitying and sulking. She had to make the best out of her situation since she was stronger than that. Kagome’s mother had always told her to carry out what she had started, so she knew that she couldn’t simply give up. She’d have to make do with what she was served and that was that.
The woman took her hand away from his soft head and pointed towards herself, “My name is Kagome. Ka-go-me.”
That left the dog-boy cocking his head sideways and blinking a few times at her strange gestures. He whined at the loss of contact. He thought it actually felt kind of nice. Bizarre, of course, since he’d experienced nothing like it before, but nice.
“C’ mon, I’m sure you can speak. Say it. Ka-go-me,” she insisted once more, pointing towards her face.
After a few more silent seconds passed by, the man attempted to make a rumbling noise at the back of his mouth. A gruff “Kah,” was muttered from his mouth, fangs seemingly in the way of his poor attempt at human speech.
“Yes, that’s right! Very good! You’re getting there,” she cooed, treating him like a child. What in the world was she doing? What in the world had she gotten herself into?
The higher-pitched feminine voice had the white-haired man more at ease. It was better than getting yelled at. Maybe he could get used to this.
“Look, I have work to do and I have to clean the disaster you’ve made in the kitchen. If you could stay out of trouble while I accomplish all of this, that would be wonderful. I’ll put the TV on for you or something, okay?” Kagome explained as she pushed herself up from the kitchen chair.
»»———————————————- ♡ ———————————————-««
She stared at her laptop cradled in her lap while she was wrapped up by a fuzzy blanket on the couch, working alongside her new companion. He hadn’t attempted to say anything since this morning and was glued to the TV since she had turned it on. He was still wearing the torn piece of cloth around his waist, so she figured she should probably do something about it sooner than later.
As countless thoughts muddled her brain, Kagome was certain she had heard of similar phenomena of children who had grown alongside animals while not being exposed to humans from her colleagues. She was wondering if this was the case for this strange man she picked up. He had nearly no human tendencies or mannerisms and he didn’t speak. Above everything else though, she wondered why this man looked part animals. To her knowledge, there had never been a documented case about anything similar before. It shouldn’t even be something that was biologically possible.
What if she could use him for her next research project? She could have just made a very important discovery in the cognitive behavioral development field. He wouldn’t mind being her guinea pig, right?
Kagome pondered this idea while doing more research on the subject. After a few clicks and searches on papers found from her university’s library website, she discovered that when children were isolated from humans for so long, they end up with a delay in their development. This also meant that the longer it was until someone discovered them, the less likely the effects were reversible to rehabilitate the cognitive ability of the children. She didn’t know how long it had been since this strange man splayed across on her living room floor had been without human contact.
The professor spent a few more hours looking up as much information as she could to aid in her documentation of the potential feral man that seemed to have made her home into his. Feral children tended to be apprehensive of humans at first, but with enough coaxing, could become comfortable with a select few. Once again, she noted that this fearful behaviour was amplified if the separation with humankind was over a greater period of time. There might be little she was able to do to get him to become comfortable with her, but she’d try her best.
This development had the professor ecstatic. Although she now had a strange man living alongside her, she’d found herself a new research project which might save her line of work at the university. She didn’t want to tell her coworkers yet for fear they would judge her, or worse, try to cash in on her discovery. She’d be the one to get the credit for this discovery. Too many times had the others taken credit for her own work, trying to appear better in the eyes of the psychology field and the university. Kagome also knew that this field of research was considered somewhat taboo, so she’d have to tread carefully on the manner in which she presented her findings and who she’d let into her close circle to help.
She had a lot of work on her plate and Kagome realised she would have to record her newfound test subject’s and hers’ interactions together. Kagome also knew that language acquisition was something she’d struggle to help her companion develop, perhaps never even reaching his language skills to that of a normal level for an adult. She wouldn’t let this get her down though; she’d see this project though.
The woman’s reverie was broken when a very gruff voice coming from the man crouched onto the ground now staring at her emitted the word, “Kagome.”
She stared at him in incredulously. He had just spoken. He shouldn’t have been able to. Not this early on, anyway, according to the piles of studies she had spent her afternoon reading.
Excitedly, she replied while pointing to herself, “Yes, yes that’s me!”
He answered her enthusiasm with a toothy grin and turned back to watch the dancing pictures appearing on the screen in front of him.
The young woman hastily created a new folder on her laptop screen and named it “Inu”, dog, with just a few clicks.
She was in for a wild ride.
»»———————————————- ♡ ———————————————-««
Their first day together had passed by in a flash. That meant that she still had tomorrow to work with him before having to return to work. Or, she could find a way to sneak him into the university. He looked young enough to pass for a student. But, she wasn’t convinced she’d be able to as there was still something off about him.
It was when dinner time rolled around that she realized she’d have her work cut out for her. She’d reprimanded the man several times as he tried to snatch the steak and peppers frying over the stove while she was preparing the rice.
“Stop, or you won’t get any dinner. Sit down at the table and wait until it’s ready,” the woman scolded as she smacked his arm away with the rice ladle.
His ears drooped slightly, but he looked at her confusingly. As the woman attempted to drag him to the chair and get him to sit, he growled every time she tried to lay a hand on his arm. His claws extended out, signifying his displeasure at the touch she was offering him.
He’s just not ready yet, Kagome told herself as she made her way to the table. She sat down in a chair at the dinner table and pointed to the one adjacent of her, “Sit.”
To her surprise, he made his way over to her location and sat quietly in the designated seat. As she returned towards her kitchenette, he had his eyes tracking her every movement as she fumbled around the stove to prepare the enticing dinner. There was no way he’d let that woman eat all the deliciously smelling food all to herself he told himself indignantly.
When she returned along with a dish full to the brim with steaming hot rice topped with beef and peppers, her companion’s ears perked up. He greedily reached out his arm to grab the bowl of food. She tried to hand him some chopsticks, but it was just too late. The man had already proceeded to dunk his entire face within the food and was nearly inhaling it.
She tried several times to get his attention away from his meal but to no avail. Sighing and knowing that there was nothing that could be done, she hoped that he could at least learn a thing or two from this interaction and watch her in action. Kagome pulled out her laptop and jotted a few notes before putting it away to eat her portion of the meal. The professor proceeded to eat her own dinner, picking up the food at a normal pace along with the proper tool, visibly chewing between bites, setting off a proper example to the odd man sitting across from her.
It was only after the half-demon had licked his plate clean when he noticed the woman sitting across from him eating food in a manner he’d never seen before. He could swear she wasn’t hungry by the speed she was eating it. Wasn’t she afraid that someone would come along and steal it from her? He gazed at her intently.
“Are you still hungry? I’ve got more prepared still, so I’ll go make you another plate. Just sit tight,” she answered the curious man as she grabbed his plate. The white-haired man growled at her as she removed his plate, but she made nothing of it. He hadn’t tried to attack her once since she had fed him the previous night.
When she returned with the dish towering with food once more, the white-haired man stared at her impatiently. Kagome handed him the chopsticks beforehand this time and then followed it by handing him the bowl. She observed him under severe scrutiny as he was holding the pair in one hand while balancing the bowl in the other.
He laid down the eating utensils on the table and brought the bowl to his face to repeat the animalistic eating process all over again. The professor noted this behaviour as well while hoping that she could eventually break through to him and teach him to eat like a normal human being.
After they finished dinner, the dishes cleaned and dried, the young woman decided it was time to take on her next challenge: getting the feral boy to take a bath. She was certain he hadn’t taken one in a while as he didn’t particularly smell good while being covered in soot and dirt from head to toe. She also had to do something about his attire. Perhaps tomorrow was a good day to go shopping for him, or at the very least, dress him in something appropriate so he could leave the house alongside her.
The professor made her way to the bathroom upstairs next to her bedroom. She had no idea how this whole ordeal would go down as she wasn’t aware if the boy even remotely had attempted to bathe before. Kagome blushed madly as she realised that she might even have to wash him herself as he probably didn’t know how. She never expected that the first man she’d bring home and see naked would be an experience remotely close to this.
A pair of curious golden eyes watched her silently in the bathroom's doorway as she bent over the tub and turned the warm water on, sticking her hand under the flowing water to verify the temperature. The last thing she wanted to do was to burn the dog-man half to death and have him run away from her home forever.
When she turned back around to call over the curious figure that had been standing behind her just a few seconds ago, she noticed he was nowhere in sight.
Oh boy, this would not be an enjoyable evening.

Traveling on a student budget
Set a limit
This basically means answering the question: how much am I comfortable spending on this trip? How much do I want to spend, ideally? And then, how much do I think I will spend, realistically? Work out those two numbers and try to find some middle ground.
That budget number is gold, do not forget it. You now have a $$ amount that is a limit, that you have to try very hard to not overpass. Take your debit/credit cards just in case but only use the extra money if very necessary. Discipline yourself to stick to your budget.
With this golden number in mind, you can now follow the next few steps at ease:
Planning
A successful trip has a good combo of effective planning and some fun spontaneous things along the way (missing your plane and taking a detour through Rome yass). But still, it’s always better to overplan than underplan, so you want to make sure you kinda know what you’re doing.
Start with figuring out WHERE you want to go and for how long (keeping the golden budget in mind). Don’t know? Check out Google Flights: you can see at a glance what goes where and what price. Compare return tickets and how much time you have available.
Pretty snazzy if you ask me.
Evaluating Transport costs
It’s not just the cost of getting there: the cost of traveling once there. Subways, buses, trains, etc. You don’t want the nasty surprise of having to pay an unplanned £14 ticket from Stansted Airport to get to the actual city of London. Be prepared.
In most of Europe there’s this amazing thing called Blablacar, a carpooling app that will connect you with drivers going to the same destination as you. Great way to save money AND meet cool people. I also use the website GoEuro to compare train, buses and flights from one place to another.
Accommodation
Ouhhh this is a big one. Where tf will I sleep? Will it be hostel? Airbnb? Dare I say… HOTEL?
Well, my biggest secret to spending only £135 on my trip to the East and West coast of Ireland was this amazing, beautiful app: Couchsurfing. So basically: free accommodation. This app is God’s gift to travelers, and it’s not only in Europe (I used it in some parts of Asia and I’ve heard people use it all over the world). The idea behind it is simple: someone has an extra couch, and you can sleep on it for free.
Why would someone offer their couch for free? Honestly, it’s a great way to travel without going anywhere. You meet people from all around the world with amazing stories and amazing experiences to tell. In exchange, the Couchsurfer gets a free bed and maybe even a bit of food. Pretty awesome right?
What if I get attacked? Unlikely, but always keep your wits about you. Check their profile, read their reviews, make sure you’re comfortable with staying at them beforehand (going with a friend helps).
99% of my Couchsurfing experiences have been top notch amazing. I’m still in contact with a few of them and have hosted one person myself (all about giving back to the community yeah). It might not be a long term solution, but it can be done for a night or two.
But of course, Couchsurfing is not for everyone. You also have hostels (Hostelworld), Airbnb and maybe some people you know in the area. Just make sure you roughly know where you’ll be staying for the length of your trip (last minute booking can get stressful).
Food
This one is tricky, and food budgeting while traveling is not a skill I have mastered yet (the pre-made wraps were FOUL). What I recommend? Setting a daily limit/budget on the amount you’re comfortable spending on food everyday while traveling (this will be incorporated in your golden budget already). Take some snacks from home too: chocolate, crackers, cheese, energy bars and fruit are pretty cool.
Touristing
If you’re doing a trip and planning on visiting the city, you’ll also be planning on doing some visiting, cultural or not (cough cough Amsterdam). You don’t have to plan to the very detail, but it helps to do a quick Google search of what touristy stuff you can do in the city and roughly what the price range is. Are there parks? Museums? Hikes? Weird monuments? Food to try? (the research will also get you excited for the trip). If you’ll be Couchsurfing, ask your Couchsurfer some tips on where to go, what to do, etc. Locals will know their city best!
Checking out local bloggers is also a great idea: Lonely Planet, NomadicMatt, etc.
Other options
We are truly lucky in this day and age to be able to travel so much. And actually, we are even luckier to be able to take it a step further: packing your bags and going for good. Aka long term travel. This means staying in that country/city for several months, getting to know the culture, the language, the food and making local friends. This option is not always available to everyone, but when it is, I recommend to grab it quick.
You can:
Study abroad: Erasmus and other programs will help you do a semester or year abroad. Or you can plan it yourself (me doing a random semester at uni in China). Check out what other bloggers have been doing: Amelie blogged about her experience studying abroad in the UK. This is a truly amazing way to travel as a student. You get to experience the local life, you get to study your subject and you really get to travel and explore the culture. Definitely a must. And many times it won’t cost you that much more.
Take a gap year: I was slightly shocked when I heard gap years weren’t really a thing in the US. I honestly think every single college student should take a gap year before starting university. The experience is unforgettable and prepares you for life better than college itself. Oh, and it’s not expensive if you do it right. If you do your research well, you can totally make your gap year achievable through volunteering or working abroad:
Volunteer abroad: I don’t have any personal experience with this, but from what I’ve researched this is awesome. Many times the companies will offer free housing and maybe even free food in exchange for some volunteering time. Opportunities range from community work to raising awareness for environment. GoAbroad and VolunteerHQ have some cool programs.
Work abroad: This could be an internship, another program of some sort, or simply finding a job once you get to the country. Universities can also help you plan this out. Check out STA travel and Go Abroad for more info. I did au pairing (looking after kids and living with the family) for a few months and that was a great experience in a foreign country. You can also get your TEFL and teach English in Asia. So many opportunities.
Online university: This is the route that I am about to embark on. The full on, traveler-student mode. Traveling while studying online. This is really for those who want to try some hardcore traveling and are ok with missing out on the traditional college experience. Maybe just one semester, but it’s a great way to not completely halt your studies and have some more flexibility.

Istanbul Recommendations, Updated
You probably told me you’re going to Istanbul and asked about any recommendations I have for you! You’re in the right place. Here’s my compiled list, grouped based on neighborhoods and experiences.
I have two earlier posts from years ago, one list and another step-by-step list. Some info on there is outdated, so I’ll consolidate some of them here and also share some more substantial recommendations with my personal suggestions on things to do in Istanbul.
Also, if you wanted to know if it’s safe to travel to Turkey/Istanbul, here’s my (likely helpful but slightly on edge) response to that as well.
In Beyoğlu, there’s been quite a shift over the past 10 years -- so you won’t be able to see/experience what it was like a while ago when it was on the news/media. However, there are lots to see in the area anyway.
Taksim Square is usually packed with tourists (especially once you start walking down İstiklal Street,) and while it used to be the center of a lot of movement in the city, it’s been transformed into an awkward pedestrian square with too much cement and not much. However, it’s still a landmark.
My favorite cafe in the entirety of the city is Ara Kafe which is up Istiklal street from Tünel. you can also get there from Taksim Square. it's in the middle point between Taksim Square and Tunel, next to Galatasaray High School https://www.lonelyplanet.com/turkey/istanbul/restaurants/kafe-ara/a/poi-eat/402334/360887
Right across from Ara Kafe there is the historical "flower passageway" aka Çiçek Pasajı which has a beautiful courtyard. I think it's worth seeing. http://www.tarihicicekpasaji.com/ on maps: https://goo.gl/maps/Hhk8KAYGJii2gEF96
Behind Çiçek Pasajı there is a whole bunch of rakı-fish restaurants. I recommend going there for dinner. You might need to make reservations.
The center of the city “life” has somewhat moved to Şişhane/Pera areas, at least according to my friends.
I recommend that you take the metro to the Şişhane stop, https://goo.gl/maps/z6AxeFzdcgYRDShB6 and just walk around on the side that goes towards the Galata Tower https://goo.gl/maps/n8pGa3ewC7Bfa7sAA You can walk up the steps to the top of the Galata Tower and see a view of the Golden Horn (which is like a side street of the Bosphorus.)
The Jewish Museum which is in Neve Shalom Synagogue is right there. The Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews Bereketzade, Büyük Hendek Cd. No:39, 34421 Beyoğlu/İstanbul https://g.co/kgs/RNv64Z
If you like a Western-style place to eat a meal, I recommend Big Chef. Our family eats here before/after weddings we attend at the synagogue.
It's a rather gentrified area so you'll see a lot of that. but know that you're walking in a historically Jewish & Greek-Orthodox area.
One of the few Turkish Nobel prize winners is Orhan Pamuk. He has a book called "The Museum of Innocence". If you read and buy the book there's a free ticket in for the actual museum, featuring different “artifacts” :) Here's the info for that. I heard good things: https://tr.masumiyetmuzesi.org/
Istanbul Modern Museum is a wonderful, off-the-beaten-path museum in that area. https://www.istanbulmodern.org/en They were originally based in Kadıköy, and I think they are now based in Beyoğlu for some time.
Then you can take the historic tunnel/funicular down all the way to Karaköy. (Alternatively, you can walk down the hill for like 30 minutes or so. It's a steep hill.)
The funicular stop in Tünel is located here https://goo.gl/maps/mhHNcjB6EDhRtBdD6 and drops you off here in Karaköy https://goo.gl/maps/xqiVxVA3vM51EWMM9.
Here, I recommend that you take the underground walkway to Karaköy İskelesi (mini-port) and walk to Güllüoğlu Baklava and have some yummy baklava. https://www.karakoygulluoglu.com/ https://goo.gl/maps/VYWWe4fopkV1NrB96
If you’re hungry, right next door is Namlı Gurme which has a selection of foods you can choose to eat.
If you’re there over dinner time especially in the summer, Akın Balık is a good place to check out for a nice, chill, and local fish dinner. You might need to reserve a table. Azapkapı, Fermeneciler Cd. Gümrük Han 40/A, 34420 Beyoğlu/İstanbul, Turkey +90 212 244 97 76 https://goo.gl/maps/vo4dGCbyLT14ZVLa6
You can go back and take the underground walkway this time to Galata Bridge, and walk on the Galata Bridge all the way across. On the bottom floor of the bridge, there are fish-bread sandwich places. The sandwich is made with fried small fish and a half loaf of bread. It’s cheap and delicious street food.
The bridge between Karaköy and Eminönü is a short bridge (because it crosses the Golden Horn). It should be a 15-20 minute walk depending on your pace. When you get to the end, you arrive at Eminönü.
Take the underground walkway to cross the street and get to the Spice Bazaar, my favorite bazaar in Istanbul. https://www.google.com/search?q=spice+bazaar+istanbul&rlz=1C1GCEA_enIL868IL868&oq=spice+bazaar+istanbul&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l7.3020j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
At the end of the Spice Bazaar, there’s the first store of Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi, the largest Turkish Coffee distributor of Turkey. You can get a freshly ground batch of coffee, ground with the dibek. More info here: https://www.theguideistanbul.com/kurukahveci-mehmet-efendi/ www.mehmetefendi.com
There’s also the New Mosque right next to the bazaar, if you wanted to check out a Mosque.
Not so far from this area, there is a whole bunch of cool stuff to see in Eyüp.
My favorite off the beaten path museum in Istanbul is the Koç Museum: http://www.rmk-museum.org.tr/istanbul/en/visit-us https://goo.gl/maps/7gMFiRSX7ZXzxvXK7
Right nearby there is an old power/electrical plant, turned into a college campus of Istanbul Bilgi University, called Santral İstanbul. They have a restaurant there and a college atmosphere. I think the entrance is free to the public, and there may be a small museum - you can just say that you're tourists to enter if there’s an issue. https://www.santralistanbul.org/en/explore/
If you want to overachieve in your sightseeing, you can also go to Miniaturk which has mini-models of different Istanbul landmarks https://www.miniaturk.com.tr/en
I suggest taking cabs here because public transportation can get confusing.
Other landmarks here are the Church of St. Stephen of the Bulgars and the Chora Church, but I’m not so familiar with either of them.
Kadikoy and Moda are more chillaxed/but still quite gentrified neighborhoods on the Asian side of Istanbul.
You can get there by boat from any of the ports. You can check the schedule here: http://en.sehirhatlari.istanbul/en/timetable/timetables-338.html I recommend having a cup of Turkish black tea on this boat and watch the sea and the city. It's a lot more authentic than taking a touristy Bosphorus boat tour.
For when you get to Moda and Kadikoy, I asked some friends for ideas on what to do there.
In Kadikoy, there is a bar/pub area. The easiest way to figure out where that is to get to the Kadikoy Bull Statue (https://goo.gl/maps/KjDBaqnQtBMY3YRZ8) and walk up that pedestrian street. On the right-hand side, there are lots of side streets with tons of bars/pubs/cafes.
A most recent exciting spot to grab a beer is apparently Bina https://www.timeout.com/istanbul/bars-and-pubs/bina
There's another bar there called Karga, apparently, it's one of the oldest buildings in the area. My friends recommend taking a peek inside. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293974-d3602063-Reviews-Karga_Bar-Istanbul.html
Pendor is apparently also nice to get beers. They have a Taksim location as well, which is older. https://www.facebook.com/pendorkadikoy/?rf=1410643425710353
Near that area, there's a famous chocolate store that has a cute garden in the back, called Asuman https://www.asuman.com/ Could be cute to check out, have some lemonade and chocolate there.
There is a Chef's Table episode (on Netflix) about Çiya Sofrası. I went there a while ago with a group of people, the food was good, but I didn't know the significance of the chef's efforts to reinvigorate Anatolian cuisine until I watched the episode. I assume you'd need to call and make a reservation before you eat there. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/turkey/istanbul/restaurants/ciya-sofrasi/a/poi-eat/402382/1339754
In Moda, which is up the hill on that pedestrian street, a classic thing to do is grabbing some pastries from a stand (like simit, which is the round bread with sesame on it -- you'll see it everywhere -- and some cheese) and walking over to this "tea garden," ordering some black Turkish tea and have a peaceful and simple breakfast https://goo.gl/maps/LzWpNM3pLQerigk3A
Also in Moda, Cibalikapı Balıkçısı is supposed to be a great place to have mezes (appetizers) and some beer/rakı https://www.cibalikapi.com/ They also have breakfast.
Viktor Levi Wine House (note: not kosher) is supposed to have good wine. https://www.viktorlevimoda.com/
I recommend having a proper Turkish breakfast.
One place is in the Beşiktaş “shuk”/bazaar (çarşı in Turkish). It’s a lot more chill, less gentrified, really local. Must have: menemen (Turkish version of “shakshuka”) and bal kaymak (honey and cream to spread on bread). There are tons of places to also have fish in a sandwich there. It’s a thing in Istanbul (especially in the Besiktas and Karakoy areas). You should try it.
Here’s a Beşiktaş recommendation for a breakfast place: Çakmak Kahvaltı Salonu Sinanpaşa, Çelebi Oğlu Sk. No:8, 34353 Beşiktaş/İstanbul, Turkey https://goo.gl/maps/SuzYevpJaGYuD3hZ6
Some other nicer/more restaurant-like places to have Turkish breakfast:
Saray Muhallebicisi (multiple locations, though I recommend going to the one in Nişantaşı or Taksim) http://saraymuhallebicisi.com/ (You can type the restaurant name on google maps and it will show up).
Another is Aşşk cafe in Bebek (on the water) Aşşk Kahve Kuruçeşme, Muallim Naci Cd. 64/B, 34330 Beşiktaş/İstanbul, Turkey https://goo.gl/maps/xNxTED3c6qdAVs9fA
In Bebek, you can take a nice walk around a well-to-do neighborhood on the sea. It’s the area where many of the famous Turkish soap operas take place.
Another off the beaten path museum is the Asiyan Museum. https://goo.gl/maps/X6j1mVw37tiPDJwd8 If you’re in the area I’d go there hike up the hill just for the view. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/turkey/istanbul/attractions/asiyan-museum/a/poi-sig/1591615/360887
You can walk back or take a bus back over to Ortaköy, walk around the pedestrian area and buy some souvenirs, take pictures in front of the Bosphorus overlooking the Bosphorus bridge and the local mosque, go up to the terrace of a cafe to have hookah/tea/beers.
Beyond these, there are the classic, historical recommendations of things to do. General recommendations include:
Checking out https://www.theguideistanbul.com/ this website seems to have good recommendations.
I also like Lonely Planet's recommendations and find them to be authentic https://www.lonelyplanet.com/turkey/istanbul.
Just so I don’t skip these, most first-timers do the old city tour of Istanbul.
This generally includes the Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia Church/Mosque, Blue Mosque (across the park from Hagia Sophia,) the nearby Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnici,) and the Topkapi Palace. Here is a general description from Lonely Planet (I have no idea if the actual tour guide they’re advertising is good or not): https://www.lonelyplanet.com/turkey/istanbul/activities/istanbul-old-city-tour/a/pa-act/v-8273P54/360887
My favorite palace is in Beşiktaş, called the Ihlamur Palace in Nişantaşı. I recommend going there, checking out the Palace, and having some tea in the garden. It is not touristy at all, still a palace, and beautiful. http://en.besiktas.bel.tr/entry/ihlamur-kasri/
And last but not least, if you want to get out of the city a little bit, and check out something completely different, I recommend going to the Princess Islands. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/turkey/princes-islands
And that’s all!

What Are the Benefits of Ground Cherries?
If there were a short list of fruits surrounded by confusing, misleading and downright incorrect nomenclature, ground cherries would be on it. There are several reasons for that: They have a long history and are well-traveled over hundreds of years, as they were discovered and propagated in multiple areas of the world.
They're also similar in appearance to the fruit of other plants, so this small, yellow-orange, husk-covered fruit with a store of tiny yellow seeds inside has a plethora of names.
They've been called "uniquely sweet; a mixture of pineapple, strawberry and green grapes — sweet, tart and vaguely tropical."1 Smithsonian may have the best description of ground cherries: They're said to taste "like a cherry tomato injected with mango and pineapple juice, and (look) like an orange pearl encased in a miniature paper lantern."
Equally at home in tropical, subtropical and temperate climates, they're sometimes called cape gooseberries, but the botanical names are slightly different. Because of their early history in Central and South America, they're sometimes referred to as Aztec berry, Inca berry, Peruvian groundcherry and Peruvian cherry.
They've taken on such monikers as aguaymanto in Peru, uvilla in Ecuador and uchuva in Colombia. In Madagascar they're called pok pok; in Hawaii, they're known as poha; and in Egypt, they're harankash.
According to Healthy Steps, ground cherries are not only related to the tomatillo (Physalis philadelphica) and Chinese lantern (Physalis alkekengi), they're also members of the nightshade family of plants. But in spite of the label, they're related to neither gooseberries nor cherries.
If all that is confusing, this might help: The botanical name for ground cherries, the variety native to North America, is Physalis pruinosa, while cape gooseberries, aka Physalis peruviana, are thought to have originated in South America. As Gracelinks observes:
"The two are very, very similar in both appearance and flavor, and in reality, the two names (ground cherries and cape gooseberries) are used interchangeably to refer to the fruit, which is generally yellow-orange, about the size of a large marble and enclosed in a papery husk …
Cape gooseberries, although native to South America, got their name from the Cape of Good Hope. They were introduced to South Africa in the early 19th century, and quickly became popular there.
From South Africa, the fruit was introduced to Australia and New Zealand. As with the early American pioneer settlers, early European colonists in Australia valued the fruit because it was one of the few fresh fruits available at the time."2
Ground Cherries Can Also Be Good for You
Their appearance as well as their flavor helps differentiate ground cherries from other fruits. Ground cherries (with yet again another descriptive name of "husk cherry") are said to make desserts brighter and add a sweet component to robust meals of meat or vegetables.
In her article referring to ground cherries as "misunderstood neighbors," Liz Granger mentions 70 varieties of Physalis fruits worldwide, and colorfully describes their many culinary aspects:
"Bite into this golden relative of the tomatillo, this berry thing, and taste its jammy insides — the nutty watermelon, the mellow sugar, the dulcet vinegar finish … They do sweet; they do savory. Native Americans turned ground cherries into a relish.
A Native American Zuni recipe combines them with onions, chili paste and coriander. The Omaha and other tribes enjoyed them fresh. Homesteaders preferred them with sugar. In sod homes and log cabins, pioneer ladies made ground cherry pie and ground cherry jam."3
But while one might think much of the nutritional value of this fruit must lie in its store of vitamins and minerals, in this case it's actually the phytochemicals. Like the sulforaphane in broccoli and the fisetin found in strawberries, it's in the polyphenols that you'll find the true power of the little-known ground cherry.
For instance, the oil from the fruit is rich in fatty acids, natural antioxidants, carotenoids, phytosterols and such chemical compounds as kaempferol, quercetin and withanolides, which have been found to possess antimicrobial, antitumor, anti-inflammatory and insect repellant properties, as well as hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory activity; glycosides also show anticancer activity.
Another study notes that a specific withanolide compound inhibits the growth of colon cancer cultures, induces cell cycle arrest at low concentrations and apoptosis at higher concentrations, and may have some effect on the prevalence of colon cancer, as well as having growth inhibiting effects on breast cancer cells.4
What Makes Ground Cherries Nutritionally Beneficial?
According to Fruits Info,5 ground cherries contain more vitamin C than oranges. It's important to note that the riper the fruit is, the higher the concentration of beta carotene. The journal International Journal of Food Nutrition and Safety notes that ground cherries (or more specifically, South American-derived cape gooseberries), have been popular as a traditional herb for blood purification and for treating cancer, leukemia, hepatitis and other ailments.
Vitamins and minerals are also plentiful. The five most prominent vitamins are A, C, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin, while significant minerals include calcium, iron, phosphorus and potassium. Then there's protein, which Nutrition Data6 reports is 2.7 grams or 5 percent of the dietary reference intake (DRI) per 1-cup serving. Lose Weight With Us also weighs in:
"Not only is vitamin A good for our eyesight, (it's) believed to inhibit cancer and lower cholesterol. Vitamin C protects us against colds and flu and is thought to lower our blood pressure and protect us from Parkinson's disease.
Niacin or vitamin B3 is well-known for increasing the level of HDL (high density lipoprotein) in our bodies, which in turn is thought to reduce the incidence of heart disease. This fruit also contains pectin, which helps regulate blood sugar."7
Additionally, water and ethanol extracts of P. peruviana, as well as other fruits, were tested to determine phenolic and antioxidant activity, and high levels of radical scavenging activity were found, which positively influenced high blood sugar and hypertension linked to Type 2 diabetes.8 As the International Journal of Food Nutrition and Safety observes:
"P. peruviana have been widely used in folk medicine as anticancer, antimycobacterial, antileukemic, antipyretic, immunomodulatory, and for treating diseases such as malaria, asthma, hepatitis, dermatitis, diuretic and rheumatism …
The plant is diuretic and juice of its leaves is given in worm and bowel complaints, while heated leaves are applied as a poultice (and) an extract of the leaves shows antibiotic activity against Staphylococcus."9
Propagating, Harvesting and Delicious Experimentation With Ground Cherries
Granger quotes Kathleen Cue, a horticulture associate from the University of Nebraska's Lincoln Extension office, who says early settlers found ground cherries invaluable because unlike many fruits like apples, pears and cherries, they didn't — and still don't — require five years to begin producing fruit; instead, they are easy for home gardeners to "morph from seed to food."
Treated like tomato plants, the seeds can be started indoors six weeks before the last frost before being transplanted into areas of full sun and, similarly, many "volunteer" by reseeding themselves.
It doesn't take long for ground cherry branches, which are faintly purple in color covered with fine hairs, to vine and spread. Under favorable conditions they may reach 6 feet in height, but they also do well when staked.
Although the period of harvest is relatively short, taking place somewhere between midsummer and early fall, the ease of the harvest helps explain how these fruits got their name, as they simply drop to the ground when they're ripe. The fruits continue to ripen, though, so collecting them early is best for flavor and texture.
First, the fruit turns from pale green to an amber or gold color, and indicates ripeness when the husk becomes papery and straw-colored. If they're still green in color, they're not ready yet and will taste bitter. When purchasing ground cherries, note that the outer covering should be intact, which helps them continue to ripen. They can be kept for as long as six months in a well-ventilated storage area, Fruits Info10 notes.
As for making use of your ground cherries in culinary endeavors, both sweet and savory recipes aren't difficult to find, but you don't need to go to a lot of trouble; simply adding them to tossed salads is said to be tasty with goat cheese. A sweet treat might involve adapting a healthy version of this tart recipe from My Three Loves,11 which uses "husk cherries" and plums with slices of ginger, orange and/or lemon zest, stevia (instead of sugar), nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla.
Smithsonian.com12 lists five quite novel ways to prepare them, such as chopping them into a salsa verde concoction with diced red onion and jalapeno, cilantro, lime and sea salt. Or, use them in combination with a relative such as tomatoes. Making a caprese salad is as simple as slicing them onto a platter and adding fresh mozzarella, chiffonaded basil, seasonings and a splash of rice vinegar.
The Kitchn13 passes along the recipe for a tasty salad vinaigrette from a site called Rawmazing.14 Combine the following in your blender or food processor, but note that the salad itself incorporates a cup of ground cherries mixed with cubed jicama, pumpkin seeds and lettuce:
Ingredients
1 cup ground cherries
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
3/4 to 1 tablespoon liquid stevia
1/4 cup organic virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons finely chopped shallots
Himalayan salt and pepper to taste
Caveats for Buying Ground Cherries: Go for Non-GMO
For whatever reason, ground cherries, although native to the continent, are relatively unfamiliar to many people in the U.S., which explains why you're not likely to find them at your local supermarket. You may, however acquire them at farmers markets and heartland fruit and veggie booths.
They're generally sold in their husks. Inside, the fruits are often covered with a fine, slightly sticky coating that should be washed off before eating. But once you try them, it's altogether possible you'll be hooked.
It must be noted that as a nightshade plant alongside relatives like potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers and eggplant, they may prove to be hard to tolerate for some people.
The unripe fruits of some varieties, particularly the Chinese lantern plant, Granger cautions, have been reported as potentially toxic if too many are ingested. The wisest course with the leaves, stems and husks of nightshades is that they be discarded because they contain the poisonous compound solanine.
But there's something else to consider. Ground cherries may be prolific all over North America, growing in forests and hedgerows, but they're not exempt from efforts to use chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides in their growth. For that reason, search out sources for ground cherries that are free from harmful residue and sprays, which can be dangerous for anyone who ingests them.
Researchers using the gene-editing technology known as CRISPR-Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindrome repeat), say that while most produce took hundreds of generations to become what they are today, they've been able to circumvent that.
Now, with CRISPR-Cas9, they can "whittle down the domestication process" to a few years, and their first experiment involves ground cherries, which "has everything it takes to become the next strawberry" that's "more suitable for agriculture."
Plant biotechnology expert and one of the developers to make the plants more productive and larger, Joyce Van Eck, says: "With some improvements, maybe it could become a specialty fruit crop."15
But if you're more interested in adding non-GM (genetically modified) ground cherries to your nutritional and culinary repertoire, Seed Savers Exchange is a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and sharing of heirloom seeds. Granger suggests Aunt Molly's Physalis pruinosa,16 an organic ground cherry variety featured in the organization's current catalog. Planet Natural17 offers heirloom varieties, as does Heirloom Seeds.18

Today was our first full day in Antwerp! It started off with a very comprehensive and detailed lecture regarding the history, identity, and politics of Belgium. While the amount of info we learned was a bit overwhelming, Jeroen is an amazing lecturer and I think I was able to retain a large amount of information. We learned not only how the country came to be but also the many cultural and religious differences between the Netherlands and Belgium that led to it’s almost artificial formation through policy. Furthermore, we delved into the discrepancies within the country itself between the north (Flanders) and the south (Wallonia) and how a preoccupation with power and wealth among the elite led to a more extreme stratification between the rich and poor, which resulted in increased illiteracy rates, child laborers, and alcoholism. The growing discontent among the working class and the rise of socialism in the South was also discussed, along with union strikes in the the mid-late 19th century, which led to further voting rights and equality. Coming into more modern times we also discussed the effects of the Flemish movement and their struggles for equality and how only after WWI and WW2 were they able to finally gain more influence and power with the rise of globalization and their ability to utilize their major harbor. With their new wealth and power they were able to push for linguistic equality and exercise their new regional autonomy. After learning all about how Antwerp has grown into the most populous city in Belgium and a major trade and cultural centre, with one of the biggest ports in the world, I was definitely able to pinpoint notable aspects of their history and culture reflected in their modern architecture, art, and social culture.
After lecture we all had lunch at De Lunchbox restaurant, courtesy of the University of Antwerp and their very gracious staff. I thought it was very cool that the pizza crust from the pizza we were eating was made from the yeast from breweries. Many thoughts came to my mind as I was eating here. First, I really appreciated how sustainable this measure was an how almost all the ingredients at the restaurant were homemade. Second, when we first received the pizzas, I realized that what we were told about Belgium in regards to food was very accurate - that they do not hold back and are very indulgent. I thought of Pieter Bruegel’s painting The Peasant Wedding, which depicted a grand and extravagant feast. There was a very generous amount of toppings on each slice featuring extravagant combinations, such as onions, cheese, sausage, ginger, and raisins. Also, since I had just learned about it in lecture, I couldn’t help but think about the beer culture that is so imminent here in every restaurant and how it partly reflects the alcoholism that was prominent in the mid 19th century, resulting from poverty and lower wages due industrialization and the need compete with the UK. Nonetheless, I greatly enjoyed the restaurant and the delicious food that was very generously offered by the University.
We then had the opportunity to learn about the history of Antwerp and the University from professor Willaert. We discussed not only the "Golden age” and flourish of the city in the 16th century but also the religious conflicts that took place in the second half of the century. One of my favorite parts of the tour we took was to the Church of Saint Charles Borromeus, which really reflected how extravagant and decorated the catholic churches were compared to the many protestant ones we saw in Amsterdam. Also the many Virgin Mary figures represented how the town was reconquered by catholics in 1585 and showcased their pride and glory. We then touched upon the decay of the ports and city in the 17th and 18th century and the eventual straightening of the Scheldt Quais in the 19th century that lead to the continuation of major growth and flourishing of the port through the 20th century.

About Electric Forest
Each summer, just as anticipation for the sold-out Electric Forest reaches fever pitch, tens of thousands of fans – traveling from all parts of the country, and the world, gather at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, Michigan for the music & camping adventure of a lifetime.
Entering its eighth year, Electric Forest is known for bringing together a passionate group of fans whose shared community spirit makes the festival a truly unique experience. The festival incorporates the natural beauty of the venue into carefully crafted art pieces and creatively themed environments, while colorful interactive characters and storylines blend with eclectic performing artists and musicians.
With its astonishing and unparalleled integration of music, art and community, Electric Forest delivers “The ultimate festival experience.” From the carefully curated musical lineup, to the jaw-dropping Sherwood Forest, to the festival’s unprecedented participatory spirit, to the site’s incomparable features and amenities – Electric Forest creates a vibe so thick with “camaraderie and freedom…it must be experienced to be appreciated.”
Electric Forest’s GOOD LIFE VIP experience offers unrivaled amenities and perks – from camping and RV spots, to log cabins and homes, to resort hotel-style suites – all located directly on the festival grounds. In addition, patrons can take advantage of the property’s many amenities including a 60,000 square foot indoor water park, an 18-hole championship golf course, swimming pools, horseback riding, and more.
At the heart of Electric Forest is the beloved Sherwood Forest. By day, fans collect among hundreds of hammocks that drape between the clustered trees. Intricate and earthy artful touches pop from the Forest’s myriad of installations and gathering spaces. At night, Sherwood Forest turns electric, showered with state-of-the-art, jaw-dropping light displays, impromptu “secret” parties, other-worldly characters, and surprises around every turn. “With no exaggeration at all, [Sherwood Forest is] the most well produced and artistically inspired area…ever seen at a music festival.”
Known for fully embracing the possibilities of an engaged festival community, Electric Forest’s Plug In Program deliberately blurs the line between event organizers and attendees. With this truly unique “open source” fan engagement platform, Electric Forest harnesses the creativity and passion of its community members, offering real and tangible ways for fans to participate in and ultimately help shape the Electric Forest experience. This is a big deal, since for Electric Forest – experience trumps all.
Hailed as “an amazing example of how music and festivals can change one’s outlook on life,” it’s widely understood that “one of the most important lessons [to be] learned in the Forest is that we are all together,” and this sense of community is truly “cherished [within the community] like the incredibly rare find it is.”
