POLL 7 (WOOHOO!)
I am so sorry I missed yesterday's posting time but, in my defence, I fell asleep as soon as I got in from work and legit didn't wake up till this morning. But, without further ado:
Some notes
Aranrhod - She's the sister to Gwydion, Gofannon, Penarddun, Amaethon, and Gilfaethwy and is probably the most... well-adjusted, shall we say? She's best known for her part in Branch 4 of The Mabinogion where Gwydion puts her forward to be their uncle Math's footholder after everything that goes down with Goewin. Unfortunately, it backfires when she walks over a silver rod and immediately gives birth to both Dylan Ail Don and Lleu Llaw Gyffes. Embarrassed, Aranrhod flees the room and goes back to her Caer (which is supposed to be the Milky Way!) while Gwydion takes Lleu and raises him. I mean she does also cast three tyngedhau on him which are: he can't have arms or a name. This, as you can imagine, makes Gwydion fume. (He's very self-aggrandizing.) Once he's older Gwydion she's about trying to get his sister to acknowledge their kid (it's implied in the text. I have talked about it a lot.) and does so in numerous ways including making her think her caer is under attack and allowing Lleu to have arms, inadvertently giving him a name after he strikes a wren with a sling (he of the fair hair and skilful hand). Yet all this does is serve to piss Aranrhod off once she she uncovers the truth about the boy and the old man with him. This leads her to cast her third tynged - he'll never have a human wife. Obvs Gwydion is super pissed off and makes Lleu one. I like to imagine Aranrhod then never involved herself in family dramas from then on. She just went to her castle and had a lovely time.
Caradog: Caradog Freichfras (strong arm) was a semi-legendary ancestor to the Kings of Gwent. He's got a horse named Lluagor (literally HOST SPLITTER, COOL AS FUCK) and is described as being Arthur's 'chief elder' by the triads. He also has a banging as fuck romance in which he discovers his actual dad is a wizard after his supposed father committed bestiality on his wedding night, battles against a serpent and accidentally slices off his girlfriend's tit in the process, which I am sure caused a lot of screaming. 'AHHH MY TIT!' 'AHHH A SNAKE!' 'Caradog, I swear to FUCK I will end u if u don't reattach my nipple, so help me god.' '.... yes dear.' Also his gf, Tegau Eufron (Goldbreast) has a virginity testing mantle.
Goewin: She's an utter sweetheart who doesn't get much to do and what she goes through is genuinely heartbreaking. She is the lady who was Math's footholder and then got raped by Gwydion and Gilfaethwy once Math was away fighting Pryderi. Once she informs Math of what happened he marries her and punishes his nephews. She's then NEVER HEARD FROM AGAIN. I for one think she went to Caer Aranrhod and was immediately accepted there once she'd divorced Math because he was helping Gwydion.
Medrawd: THEE BOI. Actually, though he was seen as a good guy for much of the Welsh Arthurian stuff. In poetry to be seen as Medrawd was to be a good thing, not bad. Obvs this changed and we have thee bad lad we know and love but I do find that interesting. But he's best known as Evil Man Who Usurps His Uncle And Has A Damn Fun Time Doing It. Can't fault him for that, ngl. I respect the hustle. He also chucks Gwenhwyfar from her throne after out next person slaps her.
Gwenhwyfach: My beloved, my Diddy little pocket rocket, Gwenhwyfach is Gwenhwyfar's sister and it is SHE who starts Camlann. She's said to've married Medrawd which makes them an Evil Power Couple and is the one responsible for slapping Gwenhwyfar over nuts, apparently? This just in: 'Camlann started over sisters warring over Macadamia nuts' More as we get it.
Once again: top 2 go through!!!! Have fun!

I looked at her hard and straight, perplexed, unable to believe her so naive. Then I took her face between my fevered palms and held her close, so that we must look directly at one another. My hands moved down her throat, across her shoulders, until at last they were cupped gently beneath her breasts; and then she knew what I might do to her.

SCRIPTURES
In a world of Goewin. daughter of Artos, sister to her brothers. It follows the world beyond her written, personal scriptures, and explores a world for... another brother of her's. the world is cruel, and Athena is loud.

So something interesting I’ve learned, is that apparently in fifteenth and sixteenth century bardic tradition, Arianrhod took the place of Goewin as Math’s footholder. Meaning In some variant of the story, which is mostly lost to us nowadays, it was Arianrhod was Math’s footholder and was raped by Gwydion and Gilfaethwy; it’s possible that Goewin was a later addition, or from a different tradition, or that in some version Arianrhod succeeded Goewin as Math’s footholder. Just wanted to know your thoughts on this.
Hi anon! 😊 Oh!!! I've heard of this, yeah, and I've always found it fascinating as to why precisely Aranrhod is used in place of Goewin. I think all three are possible and it makes much more sense why Aranrhod is so pissed off that Gwydion is insisting she acknowledge Lleu. I've talked about the fact I think Aranrhod was raped by Gwydion before and that's why she's so pissed off - which, honestly, I Do Not blame her for being at all! - and I do think it makes much more sense if she did succeed Goewin as Math's footholder.
I think it's possible that perhaps Goewin was from one telling of the legend and Aranrhod from another and the author smashed them together. That makes sense as to why Goewin and Gilfaethwy suddenly dip out of the story after Lleu is born. It's a bit like Dylan Ail Don being a minor God from Gwynedd who got lumped into the stories, the author was like 'Ooh, I'll whack him in and then pinch from here.' Like bards - unless they were Big Boi Bards like Taliesin - weren't static. They wandered about. It's perfectly possible they heard one tale from say Gwynedd and another from Deheubarth and thought 'Right, I'll mash them up to One Ultimate Branch like they're a Megazord.'
Plus, it's possible those fifteenth and sixteenth-century bards were drawing from other retellings lost to us because, hey, we haven't a clue as to why - say it with me - Gofannon bludgeoned Dylan Ail Don to death. We've no idea why the fuck Llŷr got imprisoned by Euroswydd either. Or - again, say it with me - whether Arthur had to go on a quest to get Gwenhwyfar like Culhwch did for Olwen. There are so many tantalising bits and bobs the Mabinogion references that were have no access to and every day I get a little closer to constructing a time machine to find out why.
Anyways, you should all stan Aranrhod and Goewin. I'm serious. They have to put up with so much shit in the fourth branch. I want to punch Gwydion, Math, and Gilfaethwy SO HARD.
Anyway, thank u for the question, anon!!! 💜 I hope my ramblings make sense. I loved this question so much!

Hey remember your Zenetien posts and how Rosalia would see his feminine behavior and try to "fix" it? Do you think Artos would've done the same with Goewin?
To be honest I believe Artos occasionally forgets he has a second child. Did they ever talk in the book to one another? I headcanon that when Goewin was small she would keep her hair short, put on boy's clothing and pretend she was Lleu whenever he was sick or felt like skipping his lessons. She did this to make her father spend at least a little bit time with her. The fond memories Artos had of Lleu were all with Goewin. She would have been his favourite child if only she had been born a boy.
He doesn't care about Goewin's masculine behaviour because he isn't long enough at home to notice them, but I also don't think he would see much of an issue with them, Goewin has no other function except being his spare heir and to be married and pop out children. She can learn material arts as long as she knows how to act like the prim and proper lady in front of her suitors. Because the thought of Lleu dying young was always at the back of his mind, I can imagine that Artos granted her an extensive education that had been unusual for most girls her age.
There might have been a time when they had been close and Goewin was blossoming under the attention her father gave her, because he had already given up on Lleu making it to adulthood and was in the progress of preparing Goewin to become his heir.
#the winter prince#goewin#answered asks#I don't think Artos really knows his children#when he comes home with presents I can picture him bringing Goewin a doll even though she's already past behind that age#where you play with dolls#or he would bring her a dress that is pretty but uncomfortable to wear and several inches too small
