after a few weeks of looking at houses the realtor started commenting on my sense of smell. As soon as a door opens I'm like "mold" or "mothballs" or "oh my fuck what is that goddamn miasma".

she finally said "And I thought I had a good nose, but you're on another level!"

"s'cause I'm a werewolf," I said, which is always my response to such matters.

as is also standard, she then gave me the side eye. I like to think that this is people considering whether or not I am a werewolf.

Writer's Month 2025, Day 15: tree | high school

Summary: "You know," Odysseus said, "there are a lot of unromantic stories about people turning into trees."

So, the olive tree is explicitly where Odysseus and Penelope first met. Does that mean they met on Ithaca, and not when Odysseus went to Sparta to woo Helen? Or are we supposed to imagine that the tree had so much sentimental value that they uprooted it and carried it across the sea, as a wedding present from Uncle Tyndareus or something?

The UJA-Federation of New York will send $1 million to an Israeli humanitarian group providing aid to civilians in Gaza, the federation’s CEO announced on Friday.

The funds will go to IsraAID, Israel’s largest nongovernmental aid organization, to supply food, medicine and water filtration systems for displaced Gazans. IsraAID has traditionally operated in disaster zones abroad, from earthquake relief in Turkey to aid for Ukrainian refugees, but since Oct. 7 has expanded its work to Israel and now into Gaza.

In a letter to the community, UJA CEO Eric Goldstein condemned Hamas for holding hostages, obstructing aid and provoking the conflict, but said that the Jewish community is nevertheless compelled to help alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza.

Writer's Month 2025, Day 14: "Camping place"

Original fiction, specifically "the Werewolf WIP" Status/Word count: Complete, 568 words.

The whole reason that they had moved from the city was to be closer to the forest. It was a lot easier to be a werewolf when there were some trees to hide in.

Roger told himself that he had gotten pretty good at this whole arrangement. There were rabbits and raccoons to eat and a creek to drink from, and so far, neither had given him any sort of diseases. He was getting better at slinking through the underbrush and not tripping over himself as he ran. He had gotten used to the smell and hearing enough that he no longer had a constant headache. The situation had become manageable.

He was telling himself as a massive storm raged around him, with the rain coming down in sheets and the thunder crashing so loudly that it rattled his teeth.

How did real wolves deal with all this? Dig themselves a den or something? All Roger could do was huddle under a tree and utterly fail to stay dry.

The worst thing, he thought, was that it was only a few weeks before Randall would be old enough to change.

He had been trying to make it sound like no big deal, like this curse on their family was actually a fun game. He did not enjoy the thought of his son shivering alongside him in the mud.

By morning, the rain had stopped, though it was hard to tell, as water continued to drip down from the trees. Roger opened his eyes and then climbed, tiredly, to his four feet. He tried to shake the water from his fur as he slinked off into the forest.

He found the same area where he had changed on Thursday, where the trees were less dense and the ground was relatively clear. He curled up and slept most of the day away.

When the sun went down, he retrieved his clothes, which were wrapped up in a garbage bag that he had hidden in the branches of a tree. Wolves can climb trees, though he wasn't particularly good at it. A bird had pecked holes in the bag, and also defecated on the outside of it.

When he was dressed and human again, Roger sighed, leaned against the tree, and gave a miserable look around the area.

He paused, and thought for a few moments.

He came back over the next few days, sparing an hour or so before going home after work. He cleared out some of the underbrush and half-buried rocks. When he returned on Thursday, he came with a tent. His wife hadn't liked the expense, but had relented when she realized that it was more for Randall than for him.

It box said it was easy to assemble, but it still took Roger an hour to get it together. By the time he was done, the sun was down and it was time for him to change.

If you had stumbled into the newly pristine clearing that weekend, you would have found a wolf coming and going out of an open tent. This turned out to be a godsend when there was another storm on Friday night.

It took Roger another half-hour to disassemble and pack up the tent on Sunday, but he grinned sheepishly as he worked. He was thinking of what other amenities he could get together by the time that Randall joined him.
