in third year, the marauders had their boggart lesson. remus faced it first, it turned into the moon, he couldn’t bring himself to cast the spell, and exited the room immediately to escape it.
sirius went next. but it didn’t change; remus’ fears were his fears, remus’ feelings affected his. but then the moon dropped and started bleeding and just bled and bled until it lost its shine and sirius just stood there, watching, completely stunned. shivers clawed up his back. and he didn’t know what it meant or why it affected him this much, but it was so inexplicably awful. a gut-wrenching feeling so woefully familiar, yet also so distant.
a part of him knew the moon was remus. he didn’t know boggarts could be that metaphoric, but there was no other explanation. remus had never seemed animalistic to him. he was celestial. lycanthropy isn’t based around the animal, it’s based around the moon, and sirius felt only the latter could explain remus in a way that fit him.
he had never felt the need to call someone ethereal before, that was where this metaphor came from. not only was he afraid of remus getting hurt; he was afraid of remus knowing. knowing exactly how sirius saw him, that he was the only power strong enough to control sirius’ tide. what might have seemed strange and complicated and inexplainable to those around him right then, may have been the last piece to someone else’s puzzle. someone who luckily wasn’t there.
sirius, having gotten lost in his head for a little too long, left the classroom as well, making sure to go exactly where he thinks remus wouldn’t.
