In the 19th century, British colonists faced several challenges in India, [...] [including] malaria. [...] The imperialists needed an answer to the problem and they found it in quinine. [...] [T]he British promptly embraced quinine, consuming tonnes of it every year by the mid-1800s. [...] Quinine was so bitter that soldiers and officials began mixing the powder with soda and sugar, unwittingly giving birth to “tonic water”. [...] [I]t prompted Winston Churchill to once proclaim, “The gin and tonic has saved more Englishmen’s lives, and minds, than all the doctors in the Empire.” [...] If by some good fortune malaria did not claim them, plague, cholera, dysentery, enteric fever, hepatitis or the unforgiving sun could. Preserving and protecting the body was [...] crucial to the success of the colonial project. As historian EM Collingham aptly summarised in her study, “The British experience of India was intensely physical.”
One way the colonists tried to deal with this challenge was through food and drinks. “The association between food and the maintenance of health was a concern of Anglo-Indian doctors, dieticians and the British authorities throughout the duration of colonial rule [...],” writes Sam Goodman in Unpalatable Truths: Food and Drink as Medicine in Colonial British India. [...]
---
The Medical Gazette, for instance, recommended treating dysentery with a “low diet” comprising thin chicken soup [...]. Botanist-physician George Watt too extolled the virtues of sago. In A Dictionary of the Economic Products of India (1893), he wrote that sago is “easily digestible and wholly destitute of irritating properties” and in demand [...]. For fever, weakness and sundry ailments, beef tea [...] was considered an ideal remedy. And for cholera, The Seamen’s New Medical Guide (1842) prescribed brandy during the worst of the sickness and half a tumbler of mulled wine with toasted bread and castor oil [...]. Ship masters and pantrymen would stock their vessels with foods with known medicinal benefits such as sago, arrowroot, lime juice, desiccated milk and condensed milk (the iconic Anglo Swiss Condensed Milk tins, later known as Milkmaid, enjoyed a permanent spot on British ships).
---
Businessmen too recognised the precarity of life abroad and realised that therein lay a perfect commercial opportunity. By the 19th century, numerous companies had cropped up across Europe, including in England, that would sell food in hermetically sealed tin containers.
One of these was Messrs Brand & Co. Recommended highly in Culinary Jottings for Madras by Colonel Robert Kenney-Herbert, Messrs Brand & Co had several offerings [...]: essence of beef, concentrated beef tea, beef tea jelly, meat lozenges, [...] potted meat, York and game pie, and A1 sauce [...]. Another company, John Moir & Sons, focused mostly on canned soups [...], selling oxtail, turtle, giblet and hare.
---
By the late 19th century such was the popularity of canned foods that rare would be the pantry in a colonial home that didn’t store them along with medical provisions like opium, quinine, chlorodyne and Fowler’s solution (an arsenic compound). [...] As Flora Steele and Grace Gardiner wrote in The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook, “A good mistress will remember the breadwinner requires blood-forming nourishment, and the children whose constitutions are being built up day by day, sickly or healthy, according to the food given them; and bear in mind the fact that in India, especially, half the comfort of life depends on clean, wholesome, digestible food.”
To assist the British woman in this ostensible duty, there were a number of cookbooks and housekeeping manuals [...]. The Englishwoman in India, for instance, published in 1864 under the pseudonym A Lady Resident, had a whole section with recipes for “infants and invalids”. These included carrot pap cooked into a congee with arrowroot [...] and toast water (well-toasted bread soaked in water). Steele and Gardiner too had a few recipe recommendations [...], including champagne jelly (“most useful in excessive vomiting”) and the dangerous-sounding Cannibal Broth (beef essence), which they said should be consumed with cream [...] to treat extreme debility and typhoid. [...]
---
One dish born of this encounter was the pish pash. The pish pash is considered an invention of the colonial cook, who adapted the kedgeree – the colonial cousin of khichdi – into a light nursery food. The famous Hobson-Jobson defined it as “a slop of rice soup with small pieces of meat” [...]. None other than Warren Hastings, the first governor-general of Bengal, gave confirmation of its efficacy when in 1784 he wrote to his wife from the sick bed [...]. There are enough records to show that the imperialists counted marh (starch water from cooked rice) and bael (wood apple) sherbet among their go-to remedies and benefited from the medicinal qualities of chiretta water and ajwain-infused water.

Watts: Hey guys do you wanna go get some D-E-S-S-E-R-T?
George: Yeah, dude, I need me a T-R-E-A-T.
Henry: What are you talking about?
Murdoch: Yeah, why did you just spell desse-
George: No! Don't say it!
Murdoch: Uh, why?
Watts: Oh God how do we tell you this... Henry... can't spell.
Murdoch: ...what!?
George: He can't spell, so when we talk about something he wants, we spell it out loud so he doesn't get too excited.
Murdoch: He's a grown man, he can't handle hearing the word treat?
Henry: Treat!?
George: No treat!
Henry: Treat!?
George: No treat!
Henry: Aww...
Murdoch:
Murdoch: Okay what is happening?
Watts: We told you, he gets excited when he hears the word T-R-E-A-T.
Henry: Watcha talking about?
George: Taxes.
Henry: Aw, shucks.
Murdoch: So you just treat him like a toddler?
Henry: Treat!?
Watts: No treat!

Murdoch: Alright... so are we getting a S-N-A-C-K?
Henry: SNACK?!
Watts: Come on!
George: Really, sir?
Murdoch: What?! I spelled it!
Watts: He knows how to spell snack.
Murdoch: So he can spell snack but he can't spell treat?!
Henry: Treat!?
Murdoch: No treat!
Henry: TREAT!?
Murdoch: NO TREAT!
Henry: GODDAMNIT!
Watts: Okay, he's getting fussy, it's time for an N-A-P.
Henry: Yeah!
Murdoch: What does N-A-P spell?
Henry: Party!

Mr. No. 01 : All About George South And My Personal Experience With Him
Hey Everyone! I wanted to write this special article for a legend whom I’ve met multiple times! The legend is , ‘ Mr. No. 1 ’ , George South . I wanted to write this because today is his birthday!
George South has been wrestling since 1984. He made his in ring debut the day after Christmas, which was December 26, 1984 at Championship Wrestling from Florida ( CWF). He was in a tag team with his partner being Mike Allen. They took on the team of Pretty Young Things , which consisted of WWE Hall Of Famer Koko B. Ware and Norvell Austin. However , South and Allen lost the match. South’s next wrestling appearance was in Bill Watts’ Mid- South Wrestling. Mid-South Wrestling was rebranded into the Universal Wrestling Federation ( UWF ) in 1986. South was in a tag team with Rocky King in a match against Kamala in a Two-On-One match in 1985. The same year , South found his way to Jim Crockett Promotions and made his debut on the Inaugural episode of World Championship Wrestling ( later to be known as WCW Saturday Night ) on April 6,1985.
On the episode of WCW, George South would team with Greg Stone to face the team of Ivan Koloff and Krusher Khruschev. A week after making his debut, he would face Magnum TA , the most popular wrestler in JCP. This was his first singles match, Magnum would defeat him. Thus , he would have his very first match against the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, ‘ The Nature Boy ’ Ric Flair , on June 1,1985. This match would be a non-title match , which meant that Flair wouldn’t have to defend his championship. Flair would go on to say that South was his favorite Enhancement Talent to work with and praised him for being a Great Worker. On September 14,1985 , South would earn his first victory against Mack Jeffers. He would also work for Georgia Championship Wrestling and would also become the NWA Junior Georgia Heavyweight Champion in 1986 as he continued to work for JCP. He would also appear in Central States Wrestling out of the Midwest. Central States Wrestling was an affiliate of the NWA in the Heart of America/ Central States Territory. His appearances there would be in the Fall of 1986. He would have matches against talents such as Colt Steel and Mark Fleming. South would form a tag team with Gary Royal upon his return to Mid Atlantic Wrestling. They would be known as the Gladiators , Cruel Connection, and the Mexican Twin Devils. They would be masked and would be an Enhancement Tag Team. South would continue to wrestle for JCP.
In August of 1988, George South would debut for the World Wrestling Federation ( WWF). He did so as he continued working for JCP. He was used as an Enhancement Talent in a match for the Honky Tonk Man for ‘ WWF Wrestling Challenge’. He would also wrestle against The Blue Blazer on the same show on August 24, 1988. This match would mark Owen Hart’s first TV match for the WWF. He would have matched against talent such as The Ultimate Warrior, The Rockers ( Marty Janetty and Shawn Michaels) , Jake ‘ The Snake ’ Roberts, Sam Houston, and many other popular WWF wrestlers . His final appearance for the company would be in 1990. Thus , he would also appear in WCW once more. He would have matched against The Great Muta and other talent such as Johnny B. Badd ( Marc Mero). George South would find his way back to the WWF in 1993 at a taping against Tatanka. Thus ,a year later, he would face Tatanka on the January 17,1994 episode of Monday Night RAW. In February, he would face Doink The Clown. In April , he would go against Lex Luger. He made his final WWF appearance in 1996 , being in a match against Jake Roberts on ‘ Superstars ’.
George South would join the PWF ( Pro Wrestling Federation) in 1991 as he was continuing to work in WCW. He would become the PWF Junior Heavyweight Champion in the Summer of the same year. He also reconnected with Gary Royal and Cruel Connection was reformed. South was crowned the PWF World Heavyweight Champion in 1995 after defeating Star Ryder. He also made an appearance in Jim Cornette’s Smoky Mountain Wrestling. In 1999, South would open his own wrestling promotion, Exodus Wrestling Alliance. He is a born again Christian and says one of his greatest accomplishments is giving Hulk Hogan a tract to help him with his faith. He often gives these out to fans at any show he is booked at. South also works with legends such as Nikita Koloff at Christian based wrestling shows. As a Heel , South says that he doesn’t use profanity, or become vulgar in order for fans to boo him. He also uses his style of wrestling to salute the wrestlers of the past such as Blackjack Mulligan.
George South is also affiliated with AML Wrestling. He made his NWA return in 2019 in a dark match against Colby Corino. This was before the taping of the December 15,2019 episode of ‘ NWA Powerrr ’. He also trains new wrestlers at Rings Wrestling Training Facility. South has trained wrestlers such as Tessa Blanchard , the daughter of Tully Blanchard and the stepdaughter of Magnum TA.
My Personal Experience With George:
George South is one of the nicest people I have ever met. I first met him back in 2022. I’ve also learned a few things about the business from him, and I’m not even an in ring talent. I got to work his merch stand at a show one night and it was an honor to do so. I even got to watch him perform in the ring and it was excellent! I have to say , he’s a great Heel and an even better person. He’s also pretty fun to watch in a deathmatch. So, happy birthday, George! Love ya! - Kay

Kräht der Hahn auf dem Mist…
Handy sagt 10 Grad, also nein und gehe hinunter.
Also kein Damm, keine Hunde, die uns begrüßen ..
Also toi toi toi…

Going Nowhere
Movie night in the cellar was fun.
The Cellar was dark except for strands of green, purple and orange Christmas lights, strung across the ceiling, with some decorative low-watt bulbs with large copper coils inside.
There were a large number of ratty chairs, loveseats and recliners arranged in rows for the comfort of a seated audience, and a large wall, painted white, instead of a screen.
Al was wearing part of a Werewolf costume, he'd taken the mask off and forgotten it on a chair, because consuming the livid green punch with lumps of dry ice floating in it was much more important.
He gestured with his still clawed, furry werewolf hands, however, whenever he greeted a new arrival.
Derrik had a flawless Dr. Frankenfurter costume, right down to the wig.
Kayleigh had a plastic viking helmet and a little plastic axe, but had worn her work overalls and not much else to show as far as a costume.
Seth had on a white shirt that said "It's not Racist when I do it." and cheap, Pharoah's headdress, and mummy wrappings for everything but the T-Shirt.
Luke had worn a slutty little black and red ensemble to compliment his red plastic devil horns on his headband, fake tail and feathered wings.
Ray felt overdressed. He was the proud owner of a full stop high quality Tolkien elf cosplay costume. He'd even done the ears today, and carried his replica sword with him to the cellar.
He received many hoots of approval from the ornery and slightly tipsy inhabitants of the cellar, and was warmly received by a few he'd not met yet.
One was an immense punk goth from Ghana. George introduced himself with few words and a noticeable accent. He had everything going on that Blade had aspired to, but not quite managed, and his own clearly goth edge. He was Kayleigh's gym friend, and lived in the unit next to her. He was also over seven feet tall, and had to move about in the cellar with his left hand beside his temple to keep from hitting the lights or the rafters. The tattered black jean vest he was wearing had to weigh twenty pounds from all the spikes and safety pins in it.
"Good to meet you, Ray. Kayleigh told me that you were like a hot elf Guy, but I was not expecting it to be true."
Ray laughed, as Kayleigh hit George in the ribs.
Damian, who was undoubtedly the youngest person in the room grinned at both of them. He was wearing a Tae Kwon Do Gi, and had a green belt.
He introduced himself to Ray, and mentioned that he lived in the apartment next door.
"Oh, nice to meet you. Surprising that I haven't run into you in the hallway yet then."
"I'm usually out the door by 05:10 every day, and I work after school, so not really home all that much. I'm studying Zoology, and it's my freshman year, so I am really still trying to get into the swing of college." He made a solemn face. "It's really eating into my video game time..." and then he smiled at his own joke.
Ray smiled with him. "I'm doing Biology with a Botany focus, but Zo-o is fascinating too. I almost went with Micro or Myco."
Al started the video and the chatter quieted somewhat.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 rules were clearly in effect during the film. Much good natured heckling took place. There were a few water pistols that saw use in the next hour, and popcorn was thrown at members of the audience with the worst puns.
A good time was had by all.
Ray was very glad he'd attended.
