Merlin telling Arthur he’s so repressed that they’ve both nearly died for each other countless times but can’t even hug him, and Arthur being like WTAF, we’ve hugged, Merlin. You smelled like a bog, and I remember it clearly because it was the greatest moment of my life. I even pressed my nose into your muddy neck IN FRONT OF GWAINE.

Arthur’s upset that their hug was so meaningless to Merlin that he forgot it, and Merlin swears he will get revenge upon Morgana for stealing it from him.

Still no one talks about the magic because it’s BBC Merlin.

Call me batshit insane, tell me I’m reaching. I literally don’t fucking care. I’m on series 4 of merlin (bbc) — which for those of you who know explains it all.

BUT. I just….aggh! Okay, so series 2-3 Merlin was the number 1 Arthur and Gwen shipper. He wanted them dating so badly and doing stinking cute romantic shit; hell — he even wrote a love note to Gwen from Arthur! Merlin was so excited for his two besties to get together. But series 4? Idk, there seems to be a slight shift. Like when Arthur says he’s going to propose to Guinevere, Merlin literally drops shit on the floor. Or the first/second episode (can’t remember) when Arthur helps Gwen down from her horse and they kiss in the courtyard because they’re kissing in public now. So in that scene you’ve got the happy couple, Lancelot tryibg to put on a brave face, and…Merlin sitting on the castle steps watching his Arwen ship sailing looking…so sad. It’s the bittersweet way he’s looking that is heartbreaking. And like I get that we see Lancelot because we know he still holds a torch for Gwen…but Merlin? Who is he supposed to be pining over between the two lovers? He’d already turned down Gwen years ago, and there was no indication that a spark had ever been ignited on that front. Was Merlin realizing his feelings for Arthur? Was Merlin just feeling lonely? Literally so many moments in series 4 are just played ever so slightly to make me feel like Merlin finding out how deeply he cared for Arthur 1) too late, and 2) in a way he didn’t feel could ever be returned.

This is truly the mental illness show.
