Merlin telling Arthur he’s so repressed that they’ve both nearly died for each other countless times but can’t even hug him, and Arthur being like WTAF, we’ve hugged, Merlin. You smelled like a bog, and I remember it clearly because it was the greatest moment of my life. I even pressed my nose into your muddy neck IN FRONT OF GWAINE.

Arthur’s upset that their hug was so meaningless to Merlin that he forgot it, and Merlin swears he will get revenge upon Morgana for stealing it from him.

Still no one talks about the magic because it’s BBC Merlin.

How have I never seen this beauty before!?!

Also, I kinda want a sleeping beauty type fic where magic is used in every other kingdom, so they’re flourishing. Meanwhile Camelot is dark and crime riddled. Merlin, a knight from another Kingdom, rides in on a dragon to save the Prince from his wicked father.

What if losing Arthur changed Merlin’s magic, and he suddenly becomes a necromancer. Arthur dies in his arms and his magic just fixes it. Arthur awakens in Merlin’s arms and they’re both just so relieved and happy. Arthur presses his face into Merlin’s neck and Merlin holds him so tight it almost hurts. Suddenly, they’re kissing like they don’t need air.

And this is how the show should have ended!!

I like to envision Geoffrey of Monmouth sitting at his desk trying to figure out how to write for the annals of history that King Arthur and his servant were most certainly gay as hell for each other without actually saying it. I imagine he gets so frustrated he burns scroll after scroll of parchment, takes a long walk to clear his head, and eventually overheads tbe phrase “two sides of the same coin” and thus Arthur and Merlin go down in history as two halves of whole.

If Uther had known the price of having a son, he wouldn’t have had one. He can’t bond with the squirming babe in his arms. He doesn’t love it, he resents it. He resents magic too.

He finds a witch and strikes another deal. He’d give anything to have his love back. Anything.

“Your first born,” the witch demands.

Without hesitation, Uther agrees. He brings the child to the witch under the cover of darkness. He feels nothing when he hands it over.

“You’ll regret this,” the witch warns, but he pays her no mind.

Ygraine lives. When her eyes flutter open, full of love, wonder and confusion she asks for her child.

“Everything has a price.”

She’s never the same. She resents Uther as he resented their child. She goes searching for ways to bring her child back, but no magic on Earth can undo what Uther has done. So she rages and she sobs. There are days when she refuses to eat and nights where she won’t sleep. She flinches away whenever Uther tries to touch her.

Uther begins the purge for revenge. It’s a gory distraction that pushes Ygraine further away.

Neither know that the witch didn’t kill their son. Far from Camelot, the unknowing Prince grows up alongside his destiny and when the time is right he will strike down the King that refused to be his father and unite Albion, with magic at his side.

I need a crossover of Uther and Lucius commiserating over their sons’ totally inappropriate obsession with their dark haired boys. It may be the thing that makes them forget their prejudices.

Lucius: “It’s always Potter this and Potter that.”

Uther: “You should hear the things Arthur has done for that boy and all he ever does is whine about how horrible of a servant Merlin is.”

Lucius: “You should replace him with a house elf.”

Uther: “You should burn Potter on a pyre.”

They agree to meet for lunch once a month. 😂

Something we should acknowledge more as a Fandom is that Uther has never forgotten Merlin's name. I always read fics where he gets Merlin's name wrong but in canon he has that man's name engraved in his brain. You can't tell me Arthur doesn't bring Merlin up in almost every conversation.

Arthur Pendragon left behind a promising career in diplomacy for his only sister. Captain Merlin Emrys fought and lost the war against the Alliance’s purge of magic.

Neither imagined they’d stumble into the other’s life on Merlin’s ship, Serenity. Nor did they expect to be held slightly hostage by Arthur’s sister’s wayward magic. The only answer is Merlin sharing the secret of his own magic, teaching Morgana and avoiding Arthur’s adoring gaze.

“I want to thank you-“

“No need,” Merlin bit out. “I didn’t do it for you.”

“I know you hate me,” Arthur mumbled.

“You’re a hypocrite.”

“I never had a choice. When I did, I chose Morgana. I never hated magic like my father. And if you’re so principled, why didn’t you leave me back on that moon?”

Merlin turned away. Arthur’s eyes followed. The weight of Arthur’s adoration brought a blush to Merlin’s cheeks. The desire to pull Arthur in, slot their lips together and run a hand through the blonde’s hair grew hot in his belly.

An alarm blared. No rest for the criminal.

I need a Merlin/Wild Mountain Thyme Mashup where Arthur and Merlin grow up side by side on their farms as best frenemies. Arthur’s still a prat. Merlin’s still a sarcastic feral brat. And they love each other, pester each other and obviously won’t admit to their growing feelings because…

At age 6 Merlin told Lancelot a secret that he refused to share with Arthur. It becomes a fight. Arthur pushes Merlin and punches Lancelot. Merlin has Hunith add an extra gate to the road. Arthur whines about it for years but he and Merlin remain inseparable, bickering idiots on the edge of falling in love and slowly burning along.

Until it all comes to a head and Arthur kisses Merlin in the field one day twenty years later. Merlin shoves him off.

“How can you not feel it!?!” Merlin screams.

“Feel what?”

“The magic between us. You make magic course through my veins. Since I was six and you’re telling me you don’t feel that?”

“That’s the secret? You think it’s magic? It’s love you idiot!”

Merlin leaves heartbroken, because to him it is and always has been magic. Arthur apologies (after appropriate angst and pining) and admits that Merlin may be right that Merlin is magic.

You know how Arthur must do all of these quests and tasks ALONE, to prove himself worthy of ruling Camelot? And one way or another Merlin is always there to help him. After a while Arthur realizes that he isn’t worthy of ruling Camelot alone. He’s only worthy (and capable) with Merlin by his side.

And he’s okay with that because he doesn’t want it any other way.

You know those episodes of crime shows where a serial killer is imprisoned and manages to get someone on the outside to continue their crime spree? That’s Kilgharrah. He may be physically imprisoned but mentally he’s plotting ways to exact his revenge from that cavern.

merlin, agitatedly pacing and gesturing angrily: how am i supposed to navigate my awful confusing ALREADY VERY DIFFICULT quest to protect arthur on his journey to become king when i’m constantly at risk of being found out by uther and his hypocritical tyrannical crusade to purge magic from camelot!

Merlin never calls Arthur sweetheart, darling or dear unless he wants to make a point. Arthur is clotpole, cabbagehead and prat. So the first time Merlin says, “Yes, dear,” in his sarcastic, thinly veiled threatening tone, everyone around them swoons at how adorable they are and Arthur knows he’s going to be sleeping on the floor.

Imagine if Merlin just decided to quit being Arthur’s servant one day.

Arthur would just lose it and spend every waking moment figuring out ways to spend time with Merlin and get him to take his job back.

Of course he starts by offering Merlin a raise, but Merlin can’t be bought.

So, he decides to fake an interest in medicinal herbs just so he can go into the forest and hike for hours with Merlin.

He tries every old wives tale to catch a cold and when he finally does, he insists upon being treated in the physician’s chambers. For days he is laid up on a crappy cot but Merlin is always there. Arthur loves being cared for by Merlin and eventually Gaius catches on and kicks him out. “There are actual sick people, m’lord.”

Arthur tries to bribe Merlin with new clothes and fancy foods. Merlin doesn’t budge and people begin to think he’s courting Merlin.

Which doesn’t sound all too horrible to Arthur. He changes his goal and begins inviting Merlin to picnics and to dine his chambers, not as his servant but as a friend and potential suitor.

Arthur starts to get the feeling that Merlin is hiding something from him and is determined to figure it out. He brainstorms ideas and plans to follow Merlin. Merlin catches on immediately and comes up with more and more outlandish secrets for Arthur to discover:

He’s having a love affair with a village farmer and his wife.

He’s got a crippling gambling addiction.

He’s fathered a series of children throughout the lower town and he visits them regularly.

He’s cheating on his lovers with Gwaine.

He’s a part of a smuggling ring that brings grain and food into the lower town without paying the proper taxes and fees.

Etc

By the end of the week Arthur feels like he doesn’t know Merlin at all. Lancelot finds him despairing over how adorable Merlin looked playing with a toddler with the same dark hair and blue eyes. Arthur laments about how Merlin has lied to him about so many things and Lancelot presumes that Merlin told Arthur about the magic.

“But he’s done it all for you, m’lord.”

And everything devolves into chaos as Arthur screams that Merlin shouldn’t be screwing half the town and breaking laws for him while Lancelot defends Merlin’s honor and chastises Arthur for not understanding how much Merlin has sacrificed to protect him.

Lancelot vents to Merlin who bursts out laughing because Arthur knows nothing about his magic but has finally learned his lesson about snooping.

He doesn’t even need a squirt bottle. Arthur takes the nearest liquid, dips his fingers in it and just splashes the droplets in Merlin’s face.

“No! Bad Merlin!”

And anytime Merlin even opens his mouth to protest, he gets more water flicked in his face. It’s never ending. Arthur will follow him around flicking water at him while Merlin fumes and tries to explain how he was saving Arthur’s life.

“Bad Merlin! We don’t commit treason to save lives! No magic! Bad!”

Annoyed, Merlin knocks things off Arthur’s desk with his magic when their alone.

I do think it would be a very funny fic to read where the magic reveal happens at the perfect intersection of Arthur trusts Merlin implicitly, and Uther is still alive and a raging asshole, and Arthur’s solution isn’t to nobly send Merlin away and pine miserably. Oh no. He finds a medieval fantasy version of a squirt bottle and squirts Merlin with it whenever Arthur catches him using magic like Merlin is a cat that keeps trying to chew electric cords.

Arthur rises out of the lake almost regularly. War, famine and disease are horrendous but not uncommon things.

Merlin patches him up and fills him in on all that he’s missed and the two go to save the world.

The pattern becomes unmistakable. When there is famine, Arthur starves to save his people. He dies of each disease just as the cure is discovered. In every war he becomes a casualty, but his people emerge victorious.

It pains Merlin. Each death as heartbreaking as the first. Each begs the question if Arthur will rise again or if it the last time he shall gaze upon his face. Merlin treats each moment, each death, each resurrection as the last. He kisses harder, holds Arthur closer and whispers sweetly in his ear just in case.

Merlin’s cursed mute and plays it off as him angrily giving Arthur the silent treatment. Arthur becomes increasingly desperate to fix whatever he did, which no one has any clue what he did wrong but all believe that he’s canbageheaded enough to deserve Merlin’s punishment.

A merthur take on the presidents daughter. Merlin is hired by Uther to befriend Arthur and be his secret bodyguard and they totally fall in love until Arthur finds out that Merlin is being paid to protect him. Obvious angst and makeup.
