That’s right, the “if we fight we win” isn’t from me this time. It’s from Kamala Harris, and I am kind of in shock.

One of the things I most feared about the “replace Biden” movement was the donor class yanking the party right again and hand-picking an all old white dudes ticket and absolutely tanking every chance we had of winning this election and stopping Trumpism for good.

Politically active Black people I know personally were expecting that to happen, because that kind of shit has happened so many times. And when political Black people talk about this shit in the Democratic party, you better listen, because their history on this stuff is solid.

I mean, that’s not the only reason I feared it, I have plenty of my own experience watching this same shit go down. But it’s a big one.

That – and all the many money and organisational problems I have described which would result – was about the biggest problem I had with replacing Biden. Particularly once it was clear the money people were moving on it so hard. I was so sure they’d do again what they’ve always done, slide the top of the ticket back to the “right,” repudiating so much economic and climate good the Biden administration has done, trying to haul us back to Clintinesque neoliberalism which would fail more spectacularly than ever before.

That’s also why I was an instant loud and dare I say it strident pivot to Harris when Biden actually did drop out – it was all to stop that money move from happening. That’s why I was out Sunday as loud and long as I could be, shouting, “WHITE PEOPLE, GET HER THE NOMINATION. FUCKING DO IT” while various usual clowns and dilettantes wibbled on demanding an ‘open convention’ and nattering about a ‘flash primary’ and going off about ‘not voting for a cop’ and the wretched spectre of Joe Manchin dipped a skeletal toe into the race.

None of that was an option. It’s still not an option. It had to be her; it has to be her.

And that speech I’m quoting shows why.

I’m still stunned. I never expected to hear a presidential candidate echoing my own words back at me.

I mean, Biden understands exactly what we’re dealing with – fash propaganda aside, he really is still all there, and his words show it. But he’s not able to frame it that way, it’s just not who he is. To see a candidate frame it like this… exactly like this… that’s something new. And I did not expect it.

I am so rarely truly surprised in politics. It has been a while since I have been surprised at all.

This has surprised me.

Another political writer I follow described her as the first Generation X candidate, and maybe that’s why. Technically she’s like two months too early for GenX, she’s in that transition zone, but y’know what? If she wants to grab that label I am fine with that, because those are some words from someone who fucking gets it. From someone who has figured it the fuck out.

Go watch her speech, particularly, oh… the “I know Donald Trump’s type” section starts around 19 minutes in, but the part after that, that’s where it really starts to matter, at 21:45. Here, I timestamped for you, hopefully it’ll work where you’re reading this and if not, just skip ahead:

I’ve been saying – this is the turning point year. The peak year of a fascist movement weakened but not destroyed by self-inflicted wounds of COVID, the last year of the backstop, the year after which we can start to win.

But still I expected that this year that we’d still have to fight under the old rules, playing the old games of the Baby Boom, even if I knew that one final year of holding would shatter it all, and let us make and play by new rules in ’26 and ’28.

Hence, one more year of the bulwark, one more year of the hold.

Until two days ago, on Sunday, July 21st, 2024, that was exactly how it was playing out.

Then a political miracle happened. Biden left the race and the donor class didn’t get their push to the right, and some of them apparently didn’t even want it because they dropped money again the moment Harris announced her campaign.

I guess maybe those rich bastards finally learned a thing or two about not throwing elections.

And that means…

…maybe we don’t have to wait ’til ’26 and ’28.

Maybe it’s not one last hold after all, before the spring.

Maybe the rules can change now.

Maybe Millennials and Zoomers are going to seize the moment this year.

If they do – if you do, if you go in, if you mean it, if you don’t waver and trip yourself up in details and personality and propaganda and purity tests and and and all of it…

…then…

…this year won’t just be a hold.

This year will be the fucking landslide we have needed for eight years now to wipe Trumpism and its like off the map for a century.

Wanna make that happen?

France and England have shown us the way, and christ, I want to make that happen.

I have posted what I'm willing to talk about on my blog. It sounds like you've already seen some of that. Beyond that, I'm not really willing to discuss. I generally try to avoid talking about other CP on here, and I don't think these things deserve any more attention than they already get. Sorry!

Having said that, I also feel the need to add that going down the path of trying to 'prove' anything about GGDD based on how they act toward other supertopics/CP is a bit of a fool's errand. We don't have anything to prove, we certainly have nothing to be insecure about, and anyway it's far better if we can focus on turtles and on GGDD rather than on other stars or other CP. It's the best way to avoid toxicity and fan wars.

The truth is, GG and DD are shipped with many people, and there are other CP supertopics featuring GG or DD in other CP that still exist to this day. Even CP that have been very problematic and which have been tools for antis. They don't get a lot of attention, they're not fed, and they certainly don't come anywhere near the numbers of GGDD supertopics. Not even the smaller ones like ZSWW (1.4 million) and LSFY (1 million).

Just for example, a GG CP supertopic with YZ only has 15k members, and a DD one with CX only has 55k (and no, I'm not going to link them here - I'm glad that they're relatively difficult to find, and we should be staying in our own lane). While the members are active, they are few.

I don't think fans quite understand how INSANE it is that a 5 year old CP supertopic between GG and DD has reached 4 million, that it has the visibility that it does, that it keeps growing rather than shrinking, and that CP topics keep trending on Weibo hotsearch without being shut down. Since BJYX hit 4 million on the 3rd of this month, 32k new turtles have been added. That's in just a couple weeks. It's still growing every day.

There's a reason solos hate us so much. We're the elephant in the room for self-insert girlfriend fans. 😅

Anyway, like I said, we are better off focusing on turtle topics and on GGDD rather than other people or other CP. Live and let live.

The fabled Pokémon Z

Backstory: After BW2 was made, Game Freak had to start working on X and Y. X and Y was the first mainline Pokémon games to fully be in 3D, but it also came with the cost of a potential "definitive version" not being possible. Now, I'm not too familiar with what Pokemon would do after Gen 4 (not cuz I wasn't interested, I just never had the money to keep up with this franchise fully), but from my knowledge over the years (and watching a bit of DYKG), there were plans for a "definitive version" being like Black and White's, where it's not just only an expansion of the two games, but it changes the story and characters so much that it's practically a sequel to the story that was already made.

They wanted to do similar with X and Y for this fabled "Z Version" possibly titled Pokemon XZ and YZ. Of course though, it never happened. What remains are the fact the anime calls itself “Pokémon XYZ” and having episodes involving Zygarde, the fact Zygarde and it’s whole ordeal got shifted into Sun and Moon, and two random new X and Y games hidden in the source code of X and Y. They would eventually get to do it again with Sun and Moon ala Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the DLCs for SWSH and SV would serve more as epilogues of the stories that came along (less full experiences worthy of being sequels and more so add-ons to the initial games), and that’s about it. X and Y…left in the dust, no expansion or anything….until now.

Pokémon Legends - Awkward Position

Pokémon Legends was introduced with Pokémon Legends Arceus, and it looked to be the massive change up the franchise was desperately needing after how lackluster SWSH felt, showing that Game Freak does want to actually do greater things and take advantage of this new hardware (contrary to a lot of popular belief). Many agreed it was a little rough in some areas but, that barely mattered when the game just felt so refreshing and fun to play. A lot of worries still were afoot with this franchise, mainly if it will truly pave the wave for a new way to enjoy Pokémon.

Legends Arceus released on January, a month after the Diamond and Pearl remakes, which those games were clearly saved for holiday releases (and we all know holiday releases mean easy money from parents wanting to get gifts), so theoretically a lot of people into Pokémon or wanting to get a new Pokémon game for their child probably would’ve spent some money already on BDSP in time for Christmas. The game would also then…basically be forgotten as it would receive its last update next month and on top of that, the new generation of Pokémon was revealed for this holiday year (not to mention since both games were huge projects developed by Game Freak and BDSP was from ILCA, it only put the quality of SV into question).

You can guess after the release of SV, it made many skeptical about what’s next for the franchise. While SV offered some great ideas, Legends Arceus felt like it was truly a brand new foundation to look into for the franchise going forward, and it seemed like it did really well for what it was. As of right now it’s reached 14M sales, to put that into perspective: SWSH made 25M, theoretically both versions making around 12.5 each, so Legends Arceus may have made just as much, if not more, sales than a version exclusive title, which really shows how hyped people were to see what this game had to offer. So suddenly having the franchise move on from it, almost as if they weren’t confident in the game to begin with, it seemed a bit worrying.

Pokémon Legends FUCKING Z-A

this is a real title. It is insane they pulled a Metroid and just revived a well known canceled name to make something completely new out of. I think what’s most wild is how not a single rumor or alleged insider ever hinted at this being a possibility, it was either claims of Gen 2 remakes ala Let’s Go style, or Gen 5 remakes because obligatory remakes of games from half of whatever generations we have now ago. I mean Gen 9 hinted at constant relations with Unova, especially in the game’s DLC iirc. And as we all saw, they kept teasing constant Gen 2 Pokémon and events in the Pokémon Presents, all to just throw a massive curve ball and introduce Gen 6. All those jokes about Paldea being based of Spain, being near France (which Kalos is based on) implying Gen 6 remakes were coming were just suddenly true I guess??? It’s almost as if within the team behind all this they made up the idea of Gen 2/5 remakes just to mess with potential leakers.

Now, confession: …I have yet to still play Legends Arceus. Again, not because I don’t want to, I just don’t have the money, so take some knowledge on gameplay and the like with a grain of salt if brought up 🥲. However, I am certain there’s still plenty of other stuff to bring up in other ways, starting with: What kinda game is this?

Many assumed if Legends was ever going to be a series, it was supposed to involve exploring past of a region. Many people making their “Legends Celebi” or “Legends Kyreum” mock-ups would believe it would give us an interesting look in what Johto/Unova respectively used to look like back then. Makes sense since speaking of legends as a word usually involves the past, what was widely believed long ago and the like. However, nothing about the trailer of Z seemed to imply this is supposed to be the ye olden days of Kalos, it all looks more like our times.

They’re essentially remixing these games old themes in a fascinating new way. Usually when we see the inevitable Pokémon remakes every 2 generations, they’re obviously made with the intention to port an old almost barely accessible game to modern consoles (When Gen 3 came out, you couldn’t trade Gen 1/2 Pokémon. When Gen 4 came out, you couldn’t play GameBoy games in DS so you couldn’t migrate Pokémon with the GBA slot. When Gen 6 came out, GBA Pokémon games were not playable on 3DS). They have their own merits and reason to exist, they’re usually sorta reimaginings of these older experiences with a modern take on them with new features and such, and honestly that’s all they need to be: familiar, yet still new enough to be worth experiencing all over again.

These Legends games on the other hand seem to be attempts at revisiting these old regions and themes but put them in a completely new perspective/world and having a bigger focus on a possible legendary Pokémon that didn’t get enough time to shine. The reason why Pokémon Legends Arceus was all about time travel and the past wasn’t because “Legends means past,” rather Gen 4 had themes of time and space, so ofc it makes sense for this game based on Gen 4’s region to have a plot line involving well, time and space. Similar to how Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers, the PMD games that came out in Gen 4, were about time traveling and saving the future and the fabric of space and shit, Legends Arceus follows suite and is supposed to be viewed as if it’s an entry to the Gen 4 titles. Honestly, this is a really great thing, as while it’s nice to explore the lore or history of these different locations, it could get a little boring and possibility limiting if every Legends games was solely about Pokémon history and the like. It’s a concept worth revisiting sometimes, but not as the defining identity of the Legends series.

The themes of Gen 6 seem to have a focus on Life and Death. It’s not easy right now to determine how exactly these concepts will be involved for Z, but seeing how this game will take place entirely within a massive more in-depth version of Lumiose City, the best I can assume is how there will be more focus in the lives of Pokémon in a more domesticated setting ala Ryme City from the Detective Pikachu series; the polar opposite to being out in the wild and seeing how feral and savage Pokémon can act towards humans back in Legends Arceus. The death side…is unknown, maybe I need to play the X and Y games to get a better idea 💀

Ah yes, I forgot, it was announced the main setting will be Lumiose City

And as shown in the trailer…it is definitely way larger than what X and Y initially had.

I’ve seen some people feel a little worried that this game will take place solely in this one city, as Pokémon is well known for having to travel setting to setting, and being stuck in one city could maybe make things feel boring with little variety in environment. But, if games like GTA and Yakuza can be city games so well beloved by many, I don’t think it’d be hard to pull off making a really compelling environment with just one city for Pokémon, it just needs to have interesting and varied landmarks, which shouldn’t be any different from practically any other Pokémon game ever, it’s just making a whole new region but surrounded constantly under this one city.

Again look at Detective Pikachu, specifically the movie, it’s whole setting was based on this one city, a lot of the plot was able to take off by exploring this city, and the climax and final battle took place in the city. I feel like they can really pull it off if they play their cards right and just make Lumiose this wonderful bustling town, and plus I’m sure there will be some parts of the region that will still offer open wild areas to find Pokémon and the like. Hell, the Pokémon themselves might carry everything if they make some really adorable or fun interactions, seeing them just living a calm lives with their trainers/human partners.

Again, a lot of this is still hard to discuss since we’re going off of simple city and title reveals, so we’ll have to further wait and see what else is planned here.

There’s been claims too that they’re completely skipping over Gen 5 in the remake department, since again it seemed like it made the most sense to make Gen 5 remakes now due to SV hinting connections with it, but…….nah bro 💀. Everyone was out here sighing relief that they’re not gonna have ILCA butcher the Gen 5 games when, they’re probably just being saved for Gen 10 since again, this happens every 2 generations (minus the Gen 1 remakes).

To be honest though, even if ILCA is brought back for it or they once again don’t really attempt to make these Gen 5 remakes take advantage of new console hardware, like they don’t turn Unova into an entirely different region with open world setting and want to stay as close as possible to the original game’s layout and all…personally I wouldn’t mind it. Ever since the jump to home console, expectations and products of the mainline games have evolved significantly, they’re WAYYYY different from what Pokémon games actually looked like. At least back on the 3DS, games were still relatively linear, so being able to remake RSE in the way it is with the XY engine didn’t seem to out of place, it didn’t risk a whole lot. We now have more focus on open zone/world and shit, while something like Diamond and Pearl was more tile/grid based and really limiting; imo trying to remake DPPT in this sorta open zone type deal that the SWSH engine offered would’ve possibly compromised part of DPPT’s identity, some might argue that DPPT being compact and linear is what makes it enjoyable. Now, this isn’t to say BDSP was a massively faithful remake, it’s considered to be worse than the original games in many ways and a lot of it felt like they went way too far in trying to be “faithful” to the source material, they could’ve easily just made the game akin to Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. But again, some fans would’ve still been disappointed that it doesn’t seem like Gen 4 is getting some proper treatment in using the hardware and play style that the recent title now had to offer.

This is where the Legends series comes in, where one series of games can continue being considered faithful to what they’re based on, while the other can just do whatever the fuck they want with old material while also using what current hardware is capable of. BDSP and Legends Arceus were a great showcase of this sorta decision making, do you want the game that you easily recognize the moment you boot up (something more simple in power)? Or do you want the game that uses stuff you remember in whole new ways that it’s practically a completely new game (something that takes advantage of what kinds of games are possible now)? The same sorta deal might happen with the Gen 5 remakes.

Plus, I don’t think Black and White’s whole look can even be ruined, like I really think it’s impossible. BW aged pretty well due to its usage of 3D environments and camera angles and the like, so if this next faithful remake were just basically port the game and upscale the graphics and all, it would still look really great, if not better upon getting to see these 3D environments in HD. With the game already look great visually form the get-go, people won’t really have much problem with how the game looks as a lot of the 3D world environment would already be done for them. Does that make sense?

As for Gen 2 remakes ala Let’s Go Pichu and Togepi or whatever……………nah……nah that shit ain’t happening 💀

Let’s Go was made as a way for new fans from Pokémon GO (which came out a year prior and was widely successful) to be able to get into the rest of the franchise, with the Switch finally being out, it was a brand new beginning for a lot of fans. And ofc, it used Kanto cuz that’s what most people remember Pokémon for. I’m not sure what the point of Gen 2 remakes of the same style would be for, and as far as I know there isn’t much reason for Gen 2 to be relevant at the moment outside of certain Johto Pokémon making a somewhat noticeable appearance in the recent SV games. Sure, it could be argued it’s just like what I said earlier, it’s done to make these games that are not at all playable on a current console more available, but the usual remakes just seem like tradition at this point, Let’s Go remakes is still unknown if they’re necessary. Especially since yk…we have that one new feature of the Switch that allows us to play old retro games, and they’ve been allowing GB/GBC/GBA games to be playable as well……I’m just saying they could easily just work on there instead…

With all that being said, why Gen 6? Besides I guess Kalos being next to Paldea according to their real world counterparts, there hasn’t been much brought up about Gen 6 lately. Just like Gen 2, it hasn’t had much relevance, and it’s not the next generation that needs a remake compared to Gen 5.

How I see it, I think it’s less about monetary business reasons/series synergy or tradition or whatever, and more of a symbolic reason.

Gen 6 felt like a missed opportunity according to many people. Now, sure you could say that for a lot of recent Pokémon games, but like I said earlier, at least they had their opportunities to expand their stories and lore and such. Gen 6…did not get that special treatment. It was the first 3D Pokémon game and it set some stuff up for possible expansion in the usual third version or sequel games, only for time constraints to get in the way. Hell, some people consider Gen 6 to be where Pokémon started to have its downfall, the whole “[franchise] had a rough transition into 3D”, due to the game lacking features and the like that Gen 5 had in spades, or being the start of showing how flawed the franchise is and how it’s starting to fumble trying to manage itself. Having to make brand new games with a whole new region, new set of designs, new gimmicks, everything that will be the identity of the franchise for the next 3 years, until they start over again? This plan was not started to seem viable anymore, especially when Gen 8 rolled around. And as of lately you see people stupidly suggesting Pokémon needs to return to 2D and only stay as a 2D franchise, cuz that’s totally a great mindset for a franchise.

To me, this is Game Freak feeling confident that they can manage this, they have more experience in how they want to create these titles with this new home console hardware and massive expectations. Gen 6 was the game that started a new era for Pokémon, it only makes sense to use that era defining title to prove this new formula of Pokémon is indeed a new series to dive into now, one that shows off what they’re capable of now that they’re not held back by being on portable consoles for another 20 years. This is them giving a game that deserved more attention a new look and the expansion it deserved, possibly a way bigger one than any other generations that came after.

Seeing how this game is being saved for 2025 (presumably for the Switch 2 or whatever), if this truly is being worked on for another year and a half, being saved for the next holiday season maybe, then I think this means the franchise is finally starting to slow down and take it’s time. However, only time will tell what’s in store for the franchise.

Today I learned how fun it is to draw a hyperbolic paraboloid.

Pictured above is one example of it, the graph of the function f : IR² → IR defined by the equation f(x,y) := xy, with some points of the input plane marked and height of the graph indicated in four points. It is drawn only for a square around the origin (that makes it easy to draw), but if you imagine extending it on the edges to make a rounder shape, you might be able to see the (probably) most famous rendition of the hyperbolic paraboloid shape, the Pringles chip:

So why is the hyperbolic paraboloid so fun to draw? Well, a defining property (and according to Wikipedia, one of the oldest definitions) of the shape is that it may be generated by a moving line that is parallel to a fixed plane and crosses two fixed skew lines.

Skew lines are lines that don't cross but are also not parallel.

In the above example, this property is easily explained like this: if you fix either x or y into place (treat it like a constant) in the equation z = xy, you get the points z of the cross-section of the graph of f and the plane corresponding to the equation y = c or x = c, depending on which variable you fixed to the constant c. This is now a linear equation, which represents a straight line.

So, whenever you have two points that you know are in the graph, which also lie in the same plane parallel to either the xz-plane or the yz-plane, we now know that the straight line that contains both of them is also completely contained in the graph. This provides us with a fairly simple way to draw (part of) this beautiful shape:

Draw a square around the origin in the xy-plane and for it's corners find the corresponding z values in the graph. In this case, I chose a square with sidelength 2, but the actual values don't matter that much.

Having found four points (above and below the corners of the square), connect them with straight lines parallel to the sides of the square. These are in the graph.

Choose two of those lines which are opposite each other, segment them evenly with the same segment lengths, and connect corresponding points with straight lines.

Technically, in the last step you have to draw infinitely many lines to get the real shape. But then again, technically to get the actual real shape, in the first step you would have to draw an infinitely large square (or connect both of the pairs of opposite lines with infinitely long straight lines, that works too). But the great thing is, your brain will automatically fill in the rest of the shape for you if you have enough segments.

More generally, the definition given above means you can really take any two skew lines, find the plane they are both parallel to, and then connect them with straight lines that lie in planes that cross that plane with a 90 degree angle. I think it's really cool how you can draw such a complicated looking shape with so few and easy instructions, and only using straight lines. In fact, if I understood the Wikipedia arcticle correctly, this property is probably one of the reasons Pringles are even made in this shape, because it makes manufacturing fairly simple.

Talking about Carta Mantua because I have thoughts on my own OC I need to write down.

Carta is a bad person in every universe and every timeline. She has to upload the laws of the universe itself even if it means driving people to madness or outright killing them.

Of course she feels horrible for having to do what she does to make sure that the universe doesn't split in half or outright shatters. If someone tugs too hard at the frail web of infinity she has to go right up ahead and make a select choice without a happy outcome.

This is why she has to kill Suiuus and the absorbed Smiling Man. This is why she has to leave all of her alternate selves throughout the universe alone. She knows that by keeping the law of entropy going the universe will keep intact. St. M has to be scarred for life. Madeleine Marionette has to be heavily mangled. Moroko has to be the last one out of the warehouse. Every Celestial has to trust Carta blindly. Perenelle has to peek behind the curtain of reality.. MVF has to look up to her.

Selbst an kühleren Tagen standen da duzende Männlein wie Weiblein - in grünen. knielangen Parkas, schulterlange Haare, rauchend und schwatzend, ein Bier oder Apfelweinglas in der Hand haltend, auf dem Trottoir. Drinnen war kein Sitzplatz mehr zu ergattern, aber eigentlich auch kein Stehplatz, also ging Mann und Frau nach draußen. Viele Geschichten waren über diesen seltsamen aus der Zeit gefallenen Menschen im Umlauf. Er erzählte jedem, dass er ein Auserwählter wäre und jetzt auf der Suche nach Jüngern sei, aber auch auf der Suche nach ein bis zwei Mark, um sich das nächste Bier zu bestellen. Das chinesische Orakel habe ihm gerade verkündet, dass der nächste, der vorbeikommt ihm ein Bier spendiert.

Gute Erinnerungen habe ich an ein Pärchen, die immer ein halbes Jahr im Brasilianischen oder Peruanischen Urwald verbrachten. Sie lebten dort bei den Ureinwohnern. Er – blonder Servertyp mit langen Haaren und Vollbart - ging mit den Männern jagen, Sie – kleine, blonde Hippiefrau - blieb bei den Indianer-Frauen und half bei den gemeinsamen Mahlzeiten. Heutige „Feministen“ der Generation YZ dürften bei diesen gelebten Rollenklischees sicherlich schäumen. Den beiden hats Spaß gemacht. Sie wohnten noch bei den Eltern, sparten dadurch Miete, jobbten sechs Monate, und dann ging es wieder in den Urwald. Das Leben in den 70ziger Jahren war in vieler Hinsicht einfacher und vor allem nicht mit verquasten woken Wertvorstellungen belastet.   

HEXENNACHT-TANZ – JAZZ VOM BAND UND ROCKER-ÜBERFALL

Alle vier Wochen fand im hinteren Saal des Jazzhauses eine Musikveranstaltung statt. Gruppen wie die Barrelhouse-Jazzband und die Frankfurter City-Bluesband traten hier auf, aber auch alter Jazzer aus dem lokalen Umfeld. Ein ehemaliger Arbeitskollege von mir – Jahrgang 1944, Mann mit Schnauzer, der wie Günther Grass aussah – griff regelmäßig bei Jam-Sessionen zu seinem großen Kontrabass. Vergilbte Plakate an den Wänden verrieten, dass in den 60ziger Jahren sogar amerikanische Jazzgrößen ihren Weg ins Jazzhaus fanden. Richtig rund ging es bei den seltenen Disko-Abenden zu. Zum Beispiel in der Nacht zum 1. Mai. Dann war das Jazzhaus, passend zur Hexennacht ein echter Hexenkessel.  Der Saal wogte zu „I can´t get no Satisfaction…“ Und mitten im Gewühl der Tanzenden, der am Tresen Wartenden, in den Gängen Stehenden balancierte Wille, der Kellner, sein schwer beladenes Tablett voller Bier und Apfelweingläser über die Köpfe hinweg. Gerüchten zu folge soll er früher als Schiffskoch gearbeitet haben, ehe es ihn an die Gestaden des Jazzhaus spülte. Ein anderer Mitarbeiter, ein Grieche, eröffnete später ein paar Häuser weiter selbst ein Lokal.  Hinter den Tresen versorgte der Sohn der Wirtin den harten Kern der Thekenrunde mit hochprozentigen Getränken, wobei er jedes Mal, wenn ein Gast eine Thekenrunde spendierte, geräuschvoll eine Glocke betätigte. Worauf alle, wie auf Kommando in Sekundenschnelle die Gläser leerten. Dass er die Schließung des Jazzhauses nicht mehr erlebte, ist eine eigene traurige Geschichte.

Dramatisch war auch ein „Besuch“ einer Rockergruppe, die in den 70zigern eines Nachts mit heulenden Motoren vor dem Jazzhaus auftauchten und einen der Tresen-Mitarbeiter, der eilig hinauseilte, mit einem brutalen Faustschlag gegen die Stirn niederstreckten. Dann schritt die Wirtin ein. Für mich war Uschi stets der Prototyp der Mutter Courage. Auch die „Callas“ eilte nach draußen. Zuvor hatte der bekannte Wiesbadener, der aus seiner Orientierung nie einen Hehl machte, eine Arie zum Besten gegeben. Seine Waffe: Der unschlagbare Humor.      

Zwischen den Schnäpsen im Wandregal stand ein Tonbandgerät, dass von 19 Uhr bis zwei Uhr im Dauerbetrieb Swing und Modern-Jazz-Stücke abspielte. Für die meisten der „jüngeren“ Besucher, also Jahrgang 1952 plus, die mit Beat, Blues, Rock und Popmusik aufgewachsen waren, war diese Musik – so muss ich zu meiner Schande heute gestehen – einfach nur eine Geräuschkulisse. Dazwischen das Gebrodel der hitzigen Gespräche und Diskussionen, das Klappern der Gläser. Immer wieder zwischendurch lustige Anekdoten: Einmal brachte ein Gast eine sechsbeinige Spezies in einer Streichholzschachtel mit – einen sogenannten „Kochbrunnenkäfer“, gebräuchliche Bezeichnung Kakerlake. Er legte die Streichholzschachtel mitten auf den Tisch. Irgendwann nahm ein Gast die Schachtel samt Gefangenen, öffnete sie, um sich eine Zigarette anzuzünden…

Vierbeinige Gäste waren häufig im Jazzhaus anzutreffen. Sie lagen unter den Tischen und dösten vor sich hin. Einmal kam ein Gast ohne Hund und wurde nach seinem tierischen Freund gefragt. Da antwortete der Mann traurig. „Den habe ich letzte Woche in einer Berliner Kneipe verloren. Die hat rund um die Uhr geöffnet. Als ich morgens am Tresen wach wurde, war der Hund weg. Er muss wohl mit jemand mitgegangen sein.“ Ja der Alkohol – besonders bei den etwas älteren Semestern - war ein Problem, dass zum Jazzhaus dazugehörte, wie die Musik vom Band. Gelegenheitskiffer rauchten ihre Joints auf der benachbarten Treppe, die hinauf zum Bergkirchenviertel führt. Das Jazzhaus blieb absolut „clean“.

EPILOG

Damit ist meine Zeitreise mal wieder beendet. Das Jazzhaus war die Wiesbadener Szenekneipe schlechthin. Die Keimzelle der alternativen Kultur. Musiker, Künstler – darunter viele Studenten oder Absolventen der Werkkunstschule, Alt68ziger, linke Kader aller Lesarten, Kinderladen-Eltern, Anarchisten, Hippies, Weltenbummler, die stolz von ihren Indienfahrten berichteten, Studenten, Schüler, progressive Lehrlinge. All das war auf zirka 100 bis 150 Quadratmeter versammelt, rauchend schwatzend diskutierend, flirtend, planend, agitierend, philosophierend. Saufend oder auf der Suche nach einem One-Night-Stand. Männlein wie Weiblein waren in dieser paradiesischen Vor-Aids-Zeit wahre Trophäenjäger. Natürlich gabs auch damals schon die Bodenständigen, die im Jazzhaus die große Liebe fanden. Vielleicht sogar fürs Leben. Alles in allem war dieser Ort ein Mikrokosmos von jungen Köpfen, die von der Rebellion der 68ziger-Bewegung getragen eine neue Welt anstrebten. Dass es keine bessere wurde, wissen wir alle. Einige Gäste brachten es zu hohen politischen Ämtern, wurden erfolgreiche Anwälte. Ärzte, Banker, Schauspieler, Lehrer, bekannte Musiker, andere blieben ihr Leben lang Looser, erlebten nicht einmal das Millennium.  

Das Jazzhaus war eine Bühne. Und wie auf einer richtigen Bühne, so wurden hier alle Genre gespielt. Lustiges, erotisches, tragisches und sogar tödliches. Komödien, Dramen, Tragödien. Ein Haus voller Geschichten.  Dass nur wenige Meter vom Jazzhaus entfernt im Bergkirchenviertel bei einem Pfarrer ein „Bekennerschreiben“ in den Briefkasten geworfen wurde, ist natürlich reiner Zufall. Wer heute im Netzt danach sucht, findet nichts. Geschickt wurden alle Spuren verwischt. Aber wer damals gelebt hat, der weiß, wer dort ein und ausging. Er weiß, was an den zerkratzen, bemalten, eingeritzten Holztischen im knüppeldichten Rauch von schwarzem Krauser, Samson, Roth-Händle und Reval diskutiert wurde. Er hat nach über 50 Jahren immer noch die resolute herzensgute Wirtin vor Augen, die während der Woche kurz vor ein Uhr und am Samstag kurz vor zwei Uhr in die lärmende wogende Menge rief: „Es ist Vooorwarnung!“ Das hieß, sich schnell noch ein Bier holen, das man langsam und genüsslich austrank. Die letzten Gäste sind dann so gegen drei Uhr nach der wiederholten Aufforderung „Es ist Feierabend!!“ auf die Nerostraße in die finstere Nacht gestolpert. Meistens allein…

Wer diese Zeit noch erlebt hat und heute durch die Nerostraße und Saalgasse läuft, hat ein ähnliches Gefühl wie auf einem Friedhof. Die Zeit ist vorbei. Sie war einmalig, wie jeder Zeitabschnitt einmalig ist. Halten wir ihn fest in unseren Erinnerungen. Die kann uns niemand nehmen. So jetzt muss ich wirklich aufhören….

I just want to get it out there that Elon Musk keeps saying – in words – that the Trump plan is to crash the economy. He keeps saying it, because he thinks it’s a good thing. Ordinary Americans will have to “embrace the pain.” People like him won’t have to do that, of course not!

But, you know.

You.

The little people.

Then and only then, after a big crash, will the economy be allowed to recover under what one supposes would be a new hyper-austerity regime.

From all historical experience, this “austerity” regime would really be a looter regime. It’d also be deflationary, which is great if you’re a billionaire and terrible if you’re everyone else, since most people will make less and less over time, while the billionaires will keep more and more since the rich won’t be paying any taxes, and the value of their stored wealth – their idle, uninvested, non-productive money caches – will increase all on its own.

The MAGA government would be gambling on the idea that American memory is so short that they’ll forget before the collapse.

Well, that, and…

And I give this credence because, well, one, yeah, Trump’s plans will crash the economy. But I also give it credence because of something Trump said before even running for office. He said this:

When the economy crashes, when the country goes to total hell and everything is a disaster, then you’ll have riots to go back to where we used to be when we were great. – Donald J. Trump on Fox and Friends, 2014

Because Elon’s saying that’s the plan this time. It wasn’t the plan last time maybe, but it’s the plan this time. And “go back to where we used to be” was white supremacy with women as men’s property. That’s what he wants.

Trump’s Director of Whitehouse Personnel just today called to end voting rights for women, saying that women shouldn’t vote and that the 19th Amendment “might have to go.”

I mean really, at this point in the campaign, what people generally need to be focusing on is getting out the vote. But sometimes things happen that are big enough to talk about, like the explosion of race hate coming out of the Trump rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. And that raw hatred – and their doubling down on it on Monday and Tuesday – is the most important item this week, absolutely.

But for the “fuck you I got mine” crowd amongst your friends, particularly the ones who are perfectly happy to laugh at racial hate jokes and really kinda like it since hey, it’s not their problem, well…

I would think that intentionally crashing the economy might give them something to care about.

Just maybe.

Because Elon keeps saying it, out loud. Elon, who would be in a Trump administration, who would be the one doing the broad strokes of fiscal planning, keeps saying that they will crash the economy, and that they will do it on purpose.

That might be something to tell your more racist family and friends.

Maybe – just maybe – they’ll care about that.
