honestly i think a lot of nuance to Mr. Collin's character is lost in most P&P adaptations when they cast him as a guy multiple decades older than his book age. this man is twenty-five years old and fresh out of seminary. he does things like apologize for fifteen minutes straight and start conversations in socially inappropriate ways he's not a Creepy Older Relative he's the guy who went to college and now thinks he knows shit but also somehow learned almost nothing there and is probably actually a lot more anxious than he lets on. casting him as an older guy gives a vastly different impression of what he's like

For better and for worse.#He WILL give Dev compliments if he thinks what he did was praise worthy. And he'll just as easily say something awful. if he thinks it true#more on that in upcoming pages...

#yttd#your turn to die#sara chidouin#shin tsukimi#sou hiyori#midori yttd#kimi ga shine#kmgsn#shadowart#EXTRA NOTES IN THE TAGS TIME AS USUAL#as far as im aware these are the only two lines that specifically mention sara's eyes ?#and they're both worded in such incredibly similar ways#both are almost very abrupt too#as if they both got distracted and felt compelled to say something about her eyes#there are in general a lot of midori parallels with sara#and i think shin's remark on her eyes being scary... well... shin would know a lot about scary eyes wouldn't he#after all he was uncomfortable with midori's stare too#which further leads into of course midori complimenting her eyes#he sees himself in her. or more specifically. the ruthless sara of the simulations#eyes to some are like a window to the soul#midori's offhanded compliment directly paralleling shin's much earlier remark on her eyes... well it makes sense these two would both make#a comment like that#that being said. i'd love to make make a partner piece to this about gin and ranmaru commenting on sara's smile#as i think those are also the only two instances where someone sees her make a dark expression and calls it out#that's all!#WAIT ONE MORE NOTE#shin going ahaha in this dialogue because it's a quirk he stole from midori really adds to the whole thing#like even while actively pretending to be sou. he is still frightened by the man he is masquerading as#and he sees that man in sara's eyes. terrifying!

#'ox-eyed' is a term I stole from Homer (along with 'dog faced')#In this cultural context the term is used to compliment brown eyes. Not just applied to brown eyes in general but to describe#someone's as uniquely pretty (usually with the implication of a soft or calm gaze). Applied more frequently to women than men.#I've gone over Ganmachen before but that one refers to the ox birth sign and is a mostly complimentary epithet for people who#have the associated traits. It literally means 'ox faced' but the mache/machen word for face doesn't refer to the anatomical face#rather some perceived essential/fundamental aspect of one's nature being their 'face'#There's a ton of other '-faced' epithets both in regards to birth signs and not#and adding the -machen suffix to a description of a person emphasizes the quality being described#Like calling someone 'brave-faced' would be a bigger compliment than just 'brave'- describes this bravery as fundamental to their being#(I don't write this kind out in-text though because the concept of 'faced as descriptive emphasis' doesn't work in english)#(I'd just say like 'very brave' or etc)#'braileig' is the term for a horse foal in the western Highlands dialect. This started as Brakul insulting Janeys with the descriptor#'little lost foal in a blizzard' (which more biting than it sounds- describes someone as pitifully helpless). Janeys was paying#more attention than he thought and had picked up enough to recognize that he was being called a horse baby. Brakul eventually#started using just 'braileig' as a nickname

martin hates being called 'nice.' like, it's a fine compliment on its own, nothing inherently wrong with it, but it's so... bland. generic. it's the 'compliment' that martin is so used to getting because people don't see him as anything else other than just 'nice.' to the point where it's a bit condescending. to the point where martin's eye twitches whenever someone says it all cheerily as if it meant something.
anyone can be nice. it's not like the only thing martin has ever been is 'nice.' it's the type of thing you get told when no one actually knows you and has to figure out something positive to say about you.
