Two statements about characters can and should co-exist: Pride and Prejudice edition
Mr Bennet has a close relationship with Elizabeth and provides amusing observations on the folly of human nature BUT he is a terrible husband and father who consistently neglects the women who rely on him for absolutely everything; Elizabeth and Jane turned out so well in spite of him, not because of him.
Mrs Bennet's behaviour is understandable given the era in which she lived and the subsequent pressure she was under to get her daughters married well, which wasn't entirely for vanity reasons given that Longbourn was entailed BUT she was still fundamentally vain, ridiculous and rude; such pressure, even combined with an absent husband, still does not make her behaviour justifiable, nor her a sympathetic character, as she enabled Lydia (whose subsequent elopement with Wickham almost ruined the family) for far too long.
Mr Collins is unfairly portrayed as a middle-aged sycophant in most adaptations, rather than the young clergyman who sucks up to his patroness in pursuit of a more lucrative living that he was BUT he is still a ridiculous character who you are not meant to feel sympathy for when Elizabeth rejects him; he is rude, hypocritical and thinks of himself far too highly considering how vapid he actually is.
Caroline Bingley is often too harshly judged as a 'pick-me,' even though her relentless pursuit of Darcy is understandable given his wealth & status and how important it was for women to make a good marriage BUT she was still rude, vain and treated Jane terribly; plus she was a hypocritical snob, given the manner in which she looked down upon the Bennet family's relations despite the Bingleys' own background in trade.
Elizabeth is incredibly witty, courageous and endearing and instantly likeable which makes Darcy's slight of her at the Meryton assembly all the more of an affront to us as readers BUT, while it explains her dislike of him, she is no means perfect herself; she had far too much misplaced pride in her ability to successfully read others' characters and consequently ignored positive accounts of Darcy in favour of believing the deceitful Wickham, given her prejudice against the former.
Mr Darcy was harshly judged by Elizabeth, even though there are many more sympathetic elements to his character than immediately meet the eye BUT he was not shy or innocent; he was always a haughty rich man who had never been told no, thought far too highly of himself and, ultimately, thoroughly deserved to be rebuked and subsequently made to reform his character.

Nothing is funnier to me than Mr. Collins coming up to Darcy with “I’ve made the most amazing discovery! You are the nephew of the great Lady Catherine de Bourgh!” And Darcy staring at him like he’s the most idiotic being he’s ever come across, like, no shit Sherlock. I know she’s my aunt. This isn’t an Importance of Being Earnest situation, I wasn’t found in a basket, I know this dumbass.

honestly i think a lot of nuance to Mr. Collin's character is lost in most P&P adaptations when they cast him as a guy multiple decades older than his book age. this man is twenty-five years old and fresh out of seminary. he does things like apologize for fifteen minutes straight and start conversations in socially inappropriate ways he's not a Creepy Older Relative he's the guy who went to college and now thinks he knows shit but also somehow learned almost nothing there and is probably actually a lot more anxious than he lets on. casting him as an older guy gives a vastly different impression of what he's like

The interesting thing about Pride and Prejudice is that it's basically marriage advice for Jane Austen's society. What were the three options of marriage? Marrying for money, marrying for love, and marrying for a combination of the two.
Charlotte and Mr Collins marry solely for financial reasons, and while their marriage seems to be content on both sides, it's far from ideal.
Lydia and Wickham marry solely for love (or rather, attraction), and we see that it doesn't last.
Both Jane and Bingley and Elizabeth and Darcy marry for love and money, and their marriages are the best of all.
I mean, it's very nice if you marry only for love, but if neither of you have a penny to your name then good luck to you.
Moral is basically "marry for love and mutual respect and money if you can."

Until my nth rewatch yesterday, I never noticed that Mr Collins could have had a Ms Bennet as his future wife:
Mary.
There are at least two scenes where you can see her pining after him and defending his demeanour to Lizzy. But since even Mrs Bennet, with her rampant urge to marry all of her daughters off, does not notice Mary, really, her attraction flew right under everyone's radar.
Though can you imagine what that meant? Mr Collins actually a brother-/son-in-law to the Bennets? Mary and Mr Collins sermonizing to each other without the other really listening?
I just think that we're missing out on some excellent comedic potential here.

Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (2016)
Tumblr media
Alright I have to admit it. I wasn't super looking forward to this one but I had a romp of a time.
Mostly due to THIS GUY
Tumblr media
why did no one tell me Matt Smith was not only in this but one of my favorite versions of Collins EVER. I didn't know my ideal Collins was a foppish bisexual disaster
"We're expecting a proposal for Jane any day now" "Ohhhhhhhhhhh...fuddle. Is there no negotiating over Jane?"
"Mr Bennet I am very susceptible to flattery and you sir, are very charming."
"Oh is there trouble?" (the ladies unsheath their weapons) "Oh it appears there is."
his little wave across the ballroom
And then he officiates the weddings at the end? "You may now kiss Mr Darcy - the brides. You may now kiss the brides" and then he watches Elizabeth and Darcy, just incredible. Watch this movie for Matt Smith, if nothing else.
But also, just a fun movie. Overdramatic? Of course. Interesting take on zombies? Check. True to canon? eeeeeehhhhhh even in the beginning it compressed a lot of conversations, and then as any good variation, went off the rails, but the important bits were there. I particularly enjoyed the moment after the proposal where Lizzy loses her temper and is throwing books and things at Darcy, who is just batting them away.
Of COURSE they had Darcy strip to a white shirt and jump in the lake. Wonderful. Yes. the data
I LOVE that Jane saved Bingley, love a strong Jane.
And adored the line "the very first moment I beheld you, my heart was irrevocably gone"
so fun.

Based on a scene from The Office that some random post on Pinterest reminded me of
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every since I first watched Pride & Prejudice in early February of this year it has not left my brain. Also, this is the first time I’ve actually drawn any character from pride and prejudice! I thought I’d struggle more with it but it was surprisingly easy :D

A few more character designs for the Pride and Prejudice Joseon AU: Mr Collins, Lady Catherine, and George Wickham
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve been rereading My Royal Awakening and Crush in Spring and those manhwas gave me a bit more inspo for this au. I couldn’t unsee Lady Catherine in eoyeo meori so I turned her into the queen dowager—which would make for some interesting nepotistic dynamics with her nephews if she favors her own clan in politics, and both Darcy and Fitzwilliam are probably not about that life lol.
Darcy could be a junior official at court where he wears his mask constantly as a matter of survival, or maybe even a scholar of Sungkyunkwan. Fitzwilliam is always gone to the border and only comes home when he’s forced to.
And Mr Collins… *deep sigh* Mr Collins is probably in a lesser administrative position and uses his connection with the queen dowager to crawl his way up the ladder.

William Collins: what are you thinking about, Miss Bennet?
Elizabeth Bennet: *dismissively polite tone* about nothing in particular, really.
William Collins: *jolly* so am I!
Elizabeth Bennet: I had no doubt, Mr Collins.
William Collins: we have so much in common!
Elizabeth Bennet: *suffering sigh*

I know that Elizabeth and Mr Darcy's love story in Pride and Prejudice can provide a lovely escapist fantasy at times, and certain adaptations absolutely add to the dreaminess of it all... but a healthy dose of realism is also beneficial every once in a while, before you get too far into the whole 'I wish I could be a Regency woman with no rights, no thoughts... only a husband to take care of me,' mindset.
Just from the story itself, perhaps it isn't so dreamy when you consider that you would have been far more likely to meet with a Mr Collins or a Mr Wickham than a Mr Darcy. Perhaps your father would not have been as much of a deadbeat as Mr Bennet, and you would have been forced to marry a man who you could neither love nor respect, like a Mr Collins, all so you would not end up as a financial burden to your family. Or, perhaps you would have been preyed upon by a man like Mr Wickham, who would have ruined not only your reputation but that of your family's, too. Even if he did marry you (though knights in shining armour like Mr Darcy who would make it so didn't exactly exist) he would likely soon fall out of love with you and renege on his vows. All while you were held to a different standard to him and expected to remain faithful and to obey him.
As for the real historical context itself, ever heard of coverture? A legal term where, upon marriage, a woman ceased to be a person under the law and instead became her husband's property. She could not own anything because she was not seen as an independent human being. This was not repealed until the late 19th century in the UK, under the Married Women's Property Act 1870 and I hardly need point out that even then, women were far from equal rights.
Idk, Pemberley has lovely grounds and all... but I think I'd rather retain my right to be a person...

I've seen this screenshot many times and it still cracks me up 😂
Altho in my personal view I think Mr. Darcy may have friends plural, he's just not the outgoing and approachable type. He has Bingley, and possibly more........? Maybe? He possibly went to school too right
This post does make me think of Lizzie and Darcy's relationship being not only romantic but also they're each other's friends. It's nice. I don't think a romantic dynamic alone works for their relationship, I think they're also friends
Mr. Collins on the other hand.......That final reblog, i can't
