Hal Jordan realised he was going on a god-complex villain arc and decided he simply had to wear thigh high boots and 80s corporate girlboss shoulder pads. Absolutely iconic.

I am sorry but I'm peeved by this post. Or more like, peeved by the justifications as to why Hal Jordan should be considered androgynous.

First of all, there is NO way around it, Hal Jordan IS a very masc man. He looks like a man. By definition, someone who is androgynous looking is neither distinguishably masculine nor feminine, as in dress, appearance, or behavior. That does not apply to Hal (least of all to Lobo). Hal is very masculine looking.

But leaving that aside, my main point of contention is... you guys KNOW that genderqueer and genderfluid people DON'T owe you androgyny, right? Like you guys KNOW someone can be genderqueer/fluid while not looking androgynous, RIGHT?

Being genderqueer doesn't mean being androgynous. Those things are NOT synonyms, and it is sincerely bullshit that they're still treated as such. Someone can be very much genderqueer while presenting themselves as a specific gender. Someone can be genderqueer but not look androgynous because they have huge tits, for example, and not looking a certain way does not make them less queer.

It's not cute or innocent to correlate looking androgynous to being genderqueer or genderfluid. Fucking knock that off.

Here's a little snippet from my story Boys' Night featuring a genderfluid Hal Jordan!

Hal groaned louder, pushing herself up onto her elbows so she could see her alarm clock on the bedside table. It was only 7:03, which was far too early to be awake in her opinion. But now that she was sitting up, the pressure on her bladder forced her out of bed and into the waking world.

She scratched lazily at her chest and then made a face at the bareness of it, insecurity creeping in even though she lived alone. She grabbed the shirt she’d discarded on the floor the night before and made her way to the bathroom.

Sometimes she missed being the Specter—missed being able to shift into whatever aspect of herself was most prominent, missed having people brush it off as something inherent to the Specter’s role in the universe instead of merely something inherent to Hal’s sense of self. But most of all she missed the freedom of not having to hide herself behind who she was when she was a man.

8. Genderfluid Hal Jordan and ‘you don’t have to change your body to be she/her’.

Okay, a list of stories that personally I would feel more seen by in DC Pride than characters explaining Sexuality 101 every year:

1. Renee Montoya and Maggie Sawyer dating and everyone rolling their eyes when the two explain how incestuously small the vigilante-and-cops lesbian scene is in Gotham, and they’ve both already dated everyone else, accompanied by flashbacks to various dates with other combinations of characters.

2. John Constantine performing some sort of ritual magic involving sex. There might be an orgy or demons involved.

3. A solid love story set on Themyscira with a view on how the culture about relationships and partners exists in an all women community (could be Hippolyta and Philippus raising a young Diana, could be a random couple selected from various minor characters)

4. As said, Thomas Blake and Floyd Lawton flirting with weapons, killing people with extreme prejudice, fucking nasty afterwards, and then the two of them lounging around wearing very little while Floyd has a cigarette (possibly going ‘huh. So that’s what it’s all about’).

5. A selection of queer Titans and associated hangers on go out to watch women’s football of some code together. Would include the line “yeah that one’s old enough for you to perve on” about a player in their 30s to a character also in her 30s.

6. Someone actually confronts Kyle Rayner about being a living gay artist stereotype and Connor Hawke steps in to fix the situation and explains: 1. Don’t force people to out themselves for your comfort; 2. Don’t make assumptions based on appearances. The person comes away with the impression Kyle and Connor are dating. The two laugh about it afterwards.

7. A continuation of the ‘everyone from high school/college in my friendship group has also come out as queer’ storyline from Hawkgirl.
