Everything goes wrong for Freya Ula when she leaves her simple life as a fisherwoman to get engaged overseas. Her ship gets wrecked, she finds out her dad's been hiding secrets from her for her whole life, and, oh, she gets framed for a terrorist attack. Wait, WHAT!? After the city's greatest detective is attacked and disappears before she could consult with him, Frey has to enlist the help of his kid and her would-be fiancée to find out who framed her and clear her name. If only Crow was half as good a detective their dad was supposed to be.

✎ The Arcane Rifts

Ghosts of past tragedies haunt the town of Kavo after decades of neglect. Fantastical creatures desiring nothing but fear and destruction hide in invisible tears in reality. Gangs and the police are at constant war with one another, there's a shapeshifting monster running amok, and the mayor's assistant suddenly wants a disabled orphan kicked to the streets. A year ago, Gene was discovered in the forest on the outskirts of town, half dead, amnesiac, and unable to even speak the local language. As he had nowhere to go, he was brought to the orphanage of Kavo for a place to stay. Now Caspar, the assistant of the mayor and the man who funds the orphanage, wants him kicked out. When Gene's left to the cold, cruel streets of Kavo on his own, he has to navigate through a town ravaged by decades of neglect and intrigue. Has the corruption truly been purged from the government? Why are godly forces active in Kavo, a small town in a backwater country? And most importantly--will Gene survive?

❧ VERY involved story with strong themes of discrimination, poverty, exploitation, trauma, and the recovery from trauma ❧ each main and secondary character is one flavor of discriminated against or another in-universe ❧ obviously I try to write it respectfully, but you can't really write bigots being bigots "respectfully"

❧ Has two "main plots" going on simultaneously; technically three ❧ I periodically give the reader updated "character guides" ❧ like they get more recent plot info added kinda like a red-string board to keep you, the audience, up-to-date with info you might've otherwise missed ❧ I think it's really cool and people seem to enjoy it ❧ I know it seems like a lot but please give it a chance

❧ I've literally plotted out pretty much the entirety of the first and second books, and know most of how book 3 will go, yet there's very little out for the current version of the story ❧ part of that is because I'm paused on the 3rd draft

❧ There's lots of timeskips throughout the first two books, but they're mostly to age up the protagonists! Gene, the MC, starts the series at 7. I promise it's not a kid's story though.

❧ The "secondary MC", Nikolai, is the police chief investigating magical stuff going on at the same time. They tie in with the main story involving Gene, though won't appear to for a long while.

❧ The "golden child" series I love more than SaS; however it's on hiatus because I promised people to work on SaS first and SaS is more popular as a romance-focused story. :/ ❧ I would never be salty about that.

Despite his more intimidating exterior that he puts on for the world, he has a gentler touch when working with his little one!

He likes keeping his little on his lap when sitting on his throne.

He was a little judgmental at first, but after age regression was explained to him, he was actually really excited to caregive!

When it comes to having a genderfluid little, sometimes she switches up her gender too! Sometimes it's to make her little feel more comfortable, but others it's just because it's fun!

When meltdowns happen he puts down everything to help you!

He's big on nicknames and likes to call you his "little one" or "child usually.

He loves to read you fairy tales and old folktales and legends! Sometimes they're from books, but he knows a lot off the top of his head too!-- but sometimes you wonder if he's just making it up as he goes...

He's a god of chaos! So forts and toys rarely get cleaned up and other artsy activities can get messy! But when there's something bothering his little one, he's happy to dote and be helpful to make it a better sensory experience.

Character: Draco Malfoy (HP) Why I love them: I don't. I love the version of him I frankensteined together from fics I read/wrote as an undiagnosed autistic preteen who wished I knew how to be meaner, and was hopelessly demisexually gay for a brunette with glasses.

Character: Uzumaki Naruto (Naruto) Why I love them: Emotionally neglected ADHD powerhouse who thinks "what do 600 hot girls look like? Me with titties and pigtails 600 times obviously" followed by "what do 600 hot boys look like? All my male friends with bedroom eyes OBVIOUSLY" and somehow hasn't figured out he's into dudes and is probably genderfluid. The Haku and Zabuza arc came SO close to "child soldier figures out that making children into soldiers is bad, actually, and resolves to create a better society where fewer people needlessly suffer" but then I think the author got old and forgot his own trajectory in favor of endless spectacle creep and, idk, something about the moon crushing Konoha or whatever. I lost interest in the story, but not the BOY. Also his relentless fixation with that dark haired cool guy he kissed one time makes every other character feel awkward, and I relate to that.

Character: Urameshi Yusuke (Yu Yu Hakusho) Why I love them: LOVE me a guy who even HEAVEN writes off as an irredeemable asshole surprising everyone with an act of selflessness. Love me an asshole who dedicates his life to love and friendship. Yusuke's narrative is basically "Obviously all yokai are evil. Wait, some aren't (some of my best friends are yokai)? Wait, most aren't (I actually really enjoy the yokai world/community)? Wait, I'M a yokai? (THAT'S why I am the way I am, and actually that's not evil it's just different)??? So there's evil humans AND evil yokai but neither are inherently bad, MOST are just regular people on both sides, and both are worth protecting" and anyway this is a neurodivergent and queer allegory to me, which slaps severely.

Character: Shi Qingxuan (Heaven Official's Blessing) Why I love them: Gender

Character: Luke Fon Fabre (Tales of the Abyss) Why I love them: Nobody's doing character growth like this little shit. An icon. It takes like 30 hours of gameplay for him to become likable and when he does it's somehow genuinely worth it.

Character: Changheng (Love Between Fairy and Devil) Why I love them: (I'm picking only one character per story, which is the only reason Xiao Lanhua and Dongfang Qingcang aren't also on this list.) You're telling me the God of War's narrative is a "tragic princess, betrothed since childhood, can't escape her family's expectations, constantly has to put everyone else above herself, until finally she snaps" story blended with "man who has been forced to live in war, falls for the first person who acknowledges that he, too, needs protection, ultimately rejects the violence he's been forced to endure and enact in favor of pursuing peace" and I'm what? NOT supposed to go insane? Also his nose freckle gives me heart palpitations.

Character: Logan Echolls (Veronica Mars, specifically season 1) Why I love them: What an excellent example of a badly coping shithead jerk fuckup boy who would be SO soft in any context where he's not under constant threat. Something about his mouth-breathing under duress compels me.

Character: Kyo (Fruits Basket) Why I love them: Badly coping under duress, the entire system is stacked against him, anger management issues and the snatched waist of a 90's manga twink. What can I say, a feral cat finding stability and love gets me every time.

Character: Xue Yang (MDZS) Why I love them: Irredeemable asshole feral cat ass man, coping badly at all times with all things but holding it together with a winning personality (gratuitous violence and bad jokes). Falls SO hard for the first person to show him love and kindness, becomes SO soft when not under threat for the first time ever, and then fucks up SO badly he ruins his whole fucking life. Spends more time trying to get back what he lost than he actually HAD what he lost. He's irredeemable. He's irredeemable. He makes apple rabbits for A Qing because she's sad. He's irredeemable. He doesn't pull a weapon on Xingchen even when Xingchen has already stabbed him and he's renowned for violence and revenge. He's irredeemable. I starting writing a post in his defense and hit the character limit halfway through my 'notes to flesh out later' bullet pointed list. He's irredeemable?? Xiao Xingchen could, though, is all I'm saying. The deeper you look into his actions the more humanity there is to find. I'm rotating every single thing about him in my mind like a rotisserie chicken.

Character: Chu Wanning (ERHA) Why I love them: He's hopelessly demisexually gay for literally just one guy. His story is gratuitously tragic but with a happy ending. Autistic Yearning incarnate. He's a burnt out husk of a blushing virgin, and the horniest person alive. Would readily die for his convictions, but won't ask for help. Prettiest wife anyone could ever wish for, with a strong masculine jaw. Total knockout gorgeous with body dysmorphia. Hyper competent with zero emotional intelligence. Interesting results! I didn’t include any collabs in my personal top 10, even though they are all great and I’d recommend them. I just feel weird about putting them up as my best work because other people contributed heavily to them! (Although, Plus One has one of my fave kissing scenes I ever wrote.) I also didn’t include my WIPs because…they aren’t done. I wouldn’t be surprised if either of them end up in my personal top 10 someday. Especially Depth of Reason which I love very much.

Anywho! The results! About half of my personal faves also happen to be in my AO3 top 10. I think I tend to questions myself and get validation/affirmation from comments/engagement so its not a surprise I agree with many of these. Some of my lesser kudos’d fics on my personal top 10 also have lovely engagement that validates me and probably contributes to my choices. 😂 But seriously, if I think about why I like these fics, all of my personal top 10 fics have interesting concepts or memorable scenes or lines that I like so I guess that affirms why I, personally, like them.

A Prickly Disposition and Flowers, Cake and Filthy DMs are short but complete AUs with a nice get together that I have returned to read again and again. I just used my new screen reader app to listen to them both this weekend. (Thanks Natural Ryan of Natural Reader.) These fics are both so cute.

A Burning Hunger is probably the best smutty fic I’ve ever written, but I am not at all surprised it isn’t widely read. If you’re interested in a Snowbaz/aged-up Humdrum threesome then you will love it! LOL.

My dear Trapped, my Shep/Penny canon-divergence get together fic. It is my least kudos’d fic. I like it a lot. It’s fun and creative. But, you know, no Snowbaz.

And Beastly, my very first fic. EVER. Snowbaz, Beauty and the Beast AU (but also very different than Beauty and the Beast). I’m sure my writing has improved loads since then. The beginning scene drags a bit. But again, I liked the concept and plot, and the way it turns lots of fairy tale themes on its head a la Carry On turning Chosen One tropes on their heads. Also, I usually have a hard time with titles but I still love this one. I like short titles but then sometimes I chose quite long ones. Idk.

Personality: I’m super chill until you mess with someone I care about or I feel overwhelmed. I’m a nerd when it comes to history (I’m a former history teacher), cultures and music. Although I’m not shy or have that much trouble making friends, I’m kind of a loner. To the point that I’ve moved to other countries by myself and often travel alone. I’m pretty adventurous and I’m an ENTP. I also try to stand up for what’s right and try to be understanding of those different from me. I’m pretty chill on the outside despite me having anxiety and I’m generally friendly to everyone which can get me in trouble sometimes when it’s looked at as flirting. I can be really impatient and easily bored when it comes to romance. I’m pretty independent too. I can talk to anyone but I have to recharge and sometimes that can take hours or sometimes days of me being alone. Im also sort of a tomboy. I’ve been told by men before that I have BDE and some have even called me daddy hahah.

Appearance: I’m a 28 year old black woman with locs where half are dyed purple. I sort of have a rockstar style but I also can look like a whimsigoth. I’ve been compared to a fairy as far as my features go since I have high cheekbones, look young for my age, feminine with sharpish features and expressive eyes. I have a really smirky smile as well. I’m also genderfluid and can dress pretty androgynous at times. I also have tattoos and a nose ring.

Interests: I love listening to music, I play bass guitar, love traveling and experiencing other cultures. I also like being in nature, roller skating and crocheting. Depending on the vibe and who I’m with I can be both a partier and a homebody.

○ Sabo makes you feel safe. Not that you really need anyone to do that, but the fact that he's so protective is a good feeling. It's nice to be able to rely on someone the way they rely on you, and the two of you always have each other's backs 100%.

○ Both of you are generally chill - especially Sabo. Your overwhelmed or anxious outbursts are never taken as personal offense, and being able to let things roll off the shoulders keeps communication constant and open.

○ You're independent and need to be able to express that, and have your alone time. Sabo, while less independent than you, isn't the clingy type. He has a lot of responsibility, from the Revolutionary Army to his bond with his brother, Sabo has other priorities to attend to. That isn't to say you're ever starved for attention, but you're not smothered with it.

○ Sabo not being so clingy to you makes and keeps you invested. He's exciting and interesting, intelligent and direct, and he manages to keep you on your toes. That keeps you invested in the romance without getting bored too quickly.

○ You crochet Sabo a little cute keychain of a fire - you mean for him to keep it in his wallet or something, but it becomes his good luck charm and he has it stuck to his hat. The smile of pride on his face when people ask him about it and he gets to say his partner made it for him is so precious

○ More dominant in nature, at first glance it seems very much like you pull the strings in the relationship. While that's usually true, it's mostly because Sabo is rather relaxed and likes to see you happy. When he needs to step up for any reason, to make the decisions when you aren't up for it, or whatever it is, he reminds you that he's a high ranking commander -- he's not as passive as it's easy to tale him for.

○ Sabo loves your more tomboyish nature though. He loves being able to just treat you as 'one of the boys' so to speak and not having to feel like he needs to censor himself. Getting his hands dirty is something he's never afraid to do, and when it's all fun and games he likes to share those things with you

○ When someone takes your kindness the wrong way and tries to make a move is when Sabo gets scary. He won't let anyone risk making you uncomfortable, and while you can stand up for yourself and he's forever grateful to know you're safe when he's not around, he will ot hesitate to go full protective mode when someone pushes a little too far.

I am just wondering if RWBY would use "The Prince and the Pauper" as one of the fairy tales (although technically, it is not a fairy tale, it is more of a fable.)

Yeah, I'm fairly certain Prince and the Pauper is one of those iconic fables that it's interesting that RWBY hasn't used yet.

Particularly it feels like something that would get the genderflip treatment. Or heck, maybe a half-genderflip with a trans or genderfluid twist. Basically I wouldn't be surprised at all if we saw PATP get alluded to in the Vacuo arc.

Heck, maybe it would involve Whitley...

Every time something goes missing from the village, Sir Violet, the local knight, makes his way to the dragon’s cave and negotiates the item’s return. It’s annoying, but at least the dragon is polite.

But when the dragon hoards a person, that’s a step too far. Sir Violet storms off to the mountainside to escort the baker home, only to find a more complex mystery—a quest that leads him far beyond the cave. Accompanied by the missing baker’s wife and the dragon himself, the dutiful village knight embarks on his greatest adventure yet.

The Dragon of Ynys is an inclusive fairy tale for all ages.
