Streaming Content for Cult Fandom

So I went poking around trying to find a free streaming source for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and stumbled on this YouTube account of a guy named Owen Davies who is remastering some series that are difficult to find streaming these days. His mission is charming:

Somehow, my channel seems to have turned into a project to remaster and preserve pre-HD media (films, TV shows, miniseries, etc.). I hope you enjoy what's here. [...] I don't monetise my channel or any of its content. It wouldn't be right to do so, since most of it is original work by industry professionals that I've just attempted to clean up and polish with a modern HD/4K shine. YouTube is my hobby, not my source of income. If you run across any ads on my content, I assure you they've been put in place by the legal rights holders in order to gather revenue - which is what allows me to legally make most of this content public :^)

In an age when digital content is just disappearing because CEOs consider it too expensive to bother retaining, it's really cool to see someone doing restoration work that also makes things available to the public for free.

ETA: I know there's debate around losing the "grittiness" of old media and whether 4k restoration removes that magic. I get that debate! For me, this is more about preserving content that is disappearing/hard to access. Okay, enjoy the show!

So, Disney is coming out with a live action Snow White...

I'm not really going to comment on that, tbh. I haven't really watched or read up on anything concerning this live action take on the story and character. BUT, I do want to take a moment to shout out my favorite live action version of Snow White.

It's the version of this character from the Hallmark mini-series "The 10th Kingdom." In this version we get a grown, adult Snow White who takes on a Fairy Godmother/protector role of the MC, Virginia. The message she gives to Virginia is so moving and empowering. It has stuck with me for ages - ever since I was a child.

The series and this scene highlights the character's warmth and kindness, but there is more there too. She provides guidance and aid - her role is protective and more in the background, but still very proactive.

This is such a beautiful scene and "The 10th Kingdom" is such an amazing mini-series that takes these fairytales (mainly the Grimm versions of them) and really brings them to life in a realistic and tangible way. If you've never watched "The 10th Kingdom," please do! The world building and character writing in it is fantastic, while the mix of CGI and practical effects is cheesy and charming in all of the right ways!

Just a quick PSA. I was looking through the 10th kingdom subreddit hoping to see some info about the sequel that gets mentioned on and off. This user was posting a lot about a tarot deck of cards and using AI art to make it. I immediately had kind of an eyebrow raise, as my most successful item in my Etsy shop is my 10th Kingdom tarot card shirt. I kept scrolling and this same user straight up stole this drawing, which is prismacolor. I dream of a time that I can make full time pay money making art, I’ve been working on getting better at my craft for like 25 years. Inktober day 3: reflection.

Idk how many of you have watched 10th Kingdom, so I'm just gonna promote it for a sec lol. It's a mini series (takes about 7 hours to watch all of it) about a girl and her father who more or less accidentally end up in a fairy tale world and have to find a magic mirror to get back home. It's goofy, touching and cheesy in a good way (in my humble opinion).

I saw it on tv 20 years ago and it's still one of my favourite series <3 Partially because of nostalgia, but for something that first aired in 2000 it actually aged pretty well. There's definitely some things that didn't, like the Roma that appear in the end of episode 4 and the start of episode 5. They're only referred to with the g-slur of course and they're depicted with some ugly stereotypes.

The 10th Kingdom (2000), Cloaked by Alex Flinn, and The Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley were all based off various fairytales.

Honestly it's probably dated by now (came out in 2000) and maybe some of the plot points could happen in a smoother way, but dang it! The way it incorporates fairy tales (especially Snow White) as historical background, not only for the 9 Kingdoms but also the 10th Kingdom (New York) characters, is still an aspect I love about it. Also it is very much rooted in the Grimm fairy tales (taking the cue from Snow White), so some of the humor comes from the morbid and fatalistic attitude of the 9 Kingdoms characters vs. the New York ones. I just think it's fun. It rewired my brain in how to tell fairy tales tied in with a modern setting.

Honestly though, the scene in part 5 of The 10th Kingdom where Virginia and Wolf play hide n seek in the woods rewrote my brain chemistry as a child. I saw that and went, "oh, my ideal relationship is obtainable...and also hot AF." The way they play nip and growl at each other? Please, it's so hot even to this day and they're still relationship goals.
