2.11 Playthings 👭👬

-episode of my life. If you only ever watch one episode of supernatural let it be this one. Creepy dolls creepy dollhouse creepy little girls a lonely Connecticut inn a desperate drunken tousle between the incest brothers. It doesn’t get any better than this.

-Dean gives Sam a hard time about suggesting a case after they’ve been looking for Ava for a month. Dean doesn’t even know Ava, but he’s spent the last month looking for her because it was important to Sam. When Sam doesn’t respond to Dean’s teasing, he backs right off. Dean is controlling and possessive but he is also respectful and considerate because he thinks the world of Sam.

-Dean says Sam’s attitude “is just way too healthy for me, I’m officially uncomfortable now” which is funny because it’s not true that Sam’s attitude is healthy and he will get drunk and misbehave about it, but it checks out that Dean is uncomfortable with healthy dynamics.

-Sam smirks at Dean’s joke in this really cute way. It shows that he still looks up to Dean, even though he wouldn’t admit it.

-the innkeeper mistakes them for a gay couple and assumes they’ll want a king sized bed and Sam says “what? No—no two singles. We’re just brothers.”

Spot the difference between these two pictures

That mighty flustered, genuinely panicky “just brothers” sounds exactly like a “we’re just friends” moment between a will they/won’t they couple and it’s so weird that he says it that way. A normal answer would be “oh this is my brother” and then everybody moves on. But this is a tv show and there’s a reason for this scene to be included in this episode. It highlights that the nature of their relationship as brothers is more layered, and this messy denial tells the viewer that there is a romantic/sexual layer.

Back in Asylum in s1, Dean was mistaken for Sam’s boss specifically to make it clear to the viewer that Dean had more authority in their dynamic at the time, which played into Sam’s anger at Dean. This is a similar way for an outsider’s interpretation of the relationship to shed light on it. Their individual reactions to the assumption that they’re a romantic couple are meaningfully different—Sam is embarrassed and nervous like he’s been caught. Dean is feeling some kind of way.

He looks guilty, like he’s doing something wrong. He played along with people thinking he and Sam were a couple in Bugs and went as far as to slap Sam’s ass and call him honey. He seems pretty comfortable with his sexuality and with people being gay in general, like the joke he made about the only real thing about him being his boobs or the time he sarcastically told a scowling male store owner that his smile really lights up a room. He’s playful, he’s not weird about it (until season 8 but that’s another post). So something else is going on here.

His attitude toward this kind of mistake has changed since season 1. A lot has happened, but I think the point at which things shifted for Dean was that moment in Croatoan when he decided that he was going to stay with and protect Sam when they thought he was infected. The episode was a major turning point for Dean. That’s what pushed him to finally tell Sam what John said, and it was the first time Dean really thought Sam was going to die. It also paralleled the scene from Provenance in which Sam almost puts his feelings for Dean into words. Back then, Dean was able to take control of the situation to avoid Sam’s feelings and his own. In Croatoan, he’s the one forced to consider his feelings and why he would live and die and kill for Sam, and Sam alone. It’s no longer possible for him to ignore the feelings between them. He knows or suspects strongly that Sam has feelings for him, and now he can’t deny that he does too. It’s one of his major conflicts moving forward.

-Dean asks Sam why people always assume they’re gay, saying it’s a “troubling question,” and Sam says “you are kind of butch. They probably think you’re overcompensating” which Dean takes in as though it’s an equally troubling revelation. They look like a couple, and therefore they look queer, from the outside: Sam with his shy demeanor, soft voice, longish hair, deference to Dean in most situations (Dean goes to the front desk, Sam hangs back a little, his body mostly facing Dean), and just general feminine-coding throughout the show. Dean with his cropped hair, gravelly voice, overconfidence, and constant womanizing.

Queer people have this shared experience of never feeling like they’re doing masculinity or femininity correctly, and knowing or realizing that other people can tell they don’t fit in, but not really being able to name what they’re doing wrong. Sam is too feminine and Dean is too masculine and when they’re together they read as a gay couple.

Croatoan drew attention to this too, but again, it’s not really about coding them as lgbt, it’s about coding them as queer and incestuous in a gothic, monstrous way. They are Other and it’s in their blood just like the monsters they hunt.

-Dean has Sam pretend to love dolls, to further underscore his feminine role in their relationship for the viewer. It would be so cute if Sam really did love dolls as a kid.

-Dean tells Sam not to look at porn in their room, apropos of nothing.

-someone else dies. Shot of Sam, damsel, gazing out the window of his tower as the body is carried out and Dean talks to the innkeeper.

Dean goes into their room, where Sam is sitting facing away from the open door in a way that feels foreboding, like something is wrong. It’s similar to the shot of Rose a little later in the episode, with her in her chair facing away from the door.

Sam is drunk because he couldn’t save the guy who died, and “the more people I save the more I can change.” He’s afraid of becoming corrupted and at least some part of him believes that he will (that he already is) and needs to make up for it.

Sam says Dean has to watch out for him “and if I ever turn into something that I’m not you have to kill me.” He argues that John said Dean has to and Dean says “Yeah well dad’s an ass” which is a very bold thing for Dean to say about the dead father he once idolized. He obeyed John to keep Sam safe, and he’s finally letting himself be angry with John.

Sam says even now everyone around him dies. He says “please, Dean, you’re the only one who can do it. Promise.”

So Sam is drunk and in crisis over believing that he will become evil, in this episode that makes sure to emphasize the sexual undertones in his relationship with his brother, in an interaction that looks charged and erotic. He’s begging his brother to kill him rather than let him fall, holding onto Dean’s shirt and pulling him down toward him, his eyes locked on Dean’s.

Dean says “Don’t ask that of me” but Sam gives him the puppiest tear-filled eyes so Dean lies, he says “I promise.” At this point Sam is sitting on his bed and Dean is leaning over him, Sam grasping his shirt to keep him close and keep his attention.

Sam looks at Dean’s lips, says “thank you,” inhales, and grabs Dean’s face in both his hands, his thumb near the corner of Dean’s lip. It looks like he’s trying to kiss Dean. The fact that he inhaled rather than exhaled also just makes it feel more like a lead-up to something rather than a conclusion.

Dean pushes Sam away, closing his eyes as if conflicted, Sam still holding onto his face. It’s a little aggressive. Dean has to shove Sam off of him forcefully.

Dean pushes Sam onto his back on the bed, where he watches him turn to his stomach and nestle into the mattress, arching his lower back with his face in the pillow. Dean puts a hand over his mouth and traces his lips, his eyes dragging over Sam’s body.

Just describing the basic mechanics of this scene makes its eroticism clear. Dean touches his lips after Sam looks at them in a gesture loaded with restraint and tension. It’s another of those scenes that usually happen between romantic leads: the woman gets drunk and confesses something and/or needs to be taken care of and the man treats her respectfully but not so respectfully that he isn’t a little seduced. Dean could have let Sam kiss him (or do whatever he was going to do), but he has so many reasons not to: fear of hurting him, of Sam leaving him, of betraying his role as his savior and protector. Dean’s self worth comes from loving Sam, so if he loves Sam Wrong he feels worthless.

And that’s to say nothing of the fact that Sam is begging Dean to take ultimate control over his body by deciding whether he lives, and deciding whether he’s good or bad. His fears are soothed by the idea that whatever happens he can be Dean’s, he can belong to his brother. He’s okay with dying only if it’s by Dean’s hand. His whole life he’s felt something was wrong with him, so if it’s true and Dean confirms it, he is the only one who can kill it. The corruption in Sam (in both of them) has already been heavily linked to blood and their relationship and now Sam is verbalizing it—No! We’re just brothers. Why does everyone assume we’re gay? Sam holding Dean’s face, drunk, saying there is something wrong with me and it’s your responsibility. Please, you’re the only one who can do it.

-Sam is throwing up the next morning. Dean says something gross about a sandwich in an ashtray that makes Sam gag and say “I hate you” and Dean says “I know you do.” The way Dean says this sounds like he really thinks Sam hates him, which came up in Asylum as well. After last night, this has to have something to do with Sam’s feelings for him and the fact that Sam thinks Dean is the only one who should kill him. He thinks it’s tied to Sam hating him and his self-hatred for loving Sam wrong.

-Maggie tells Tyler “I can’t leave this haunted house and you can’t leave me.” Sam and Dean can’t leave the haunted house that is their life because they can’t leave each other.

-Maggie tells Rose “you’d do that for me?” which Sam has basically said to Dean, and “you kept me away for so long I thought you didn’t love me any more” which fits both of them at different times. Rose is the little sister choosing to die so that Maggie doesn’t have to spend eternity alone, and saving Tyler. It’s a creepy, haunting ending that parallels Sam and Dean. The sisters play together forever in a haunted house and the brothers drive off to hunt together out of the haunted houses and motels and backroads they were raised in.

ugh its like, ok. listen. we live in a heteronormative society, even moreso the case a decade ago. everyone is assumed to be straight until proven guilty. so i can see a world in which people see dan and phil, see their dynamic and the homoerotic tension between them, and see how they call themselves best friends and not gay in 2014, and assume they're like straight guys who are really close who do the "gay inside joke" thing. so many straight guys do this, especially guys who arent particularly masculine, cuz if you lean into the gay joke enough you can use that as leverage. it's essentially saying "haha i get it i'm not super buff and ppl call me gay, but i'm not weird or strange like actual gay people are." i know not all straight guys who joke like that think that way or dont think that they are, but thats the thing with heteronormativity. because it is so normalized to see the world as straight, people don't realize what they are saying underneath what they think is good faith humor.

I'm brazillian and a native portuguese speaker!

I'll probably return to twitter eventually, but a) I hate that place and b) It didn't make much sense to me to turn it into a BG3 account out of the blue. I am considering making an Instagram or a new twitter just to have more places where people can follow in case they don't care for tumblr, but it's just been a very busy year so far and so that's kind of low on the list of priorities. I've gotten a few messages before about this issue, and the problem is that since I am myself not from the US, my options are also limited :( a lot of patreon alternatives don't work for me because they either don't go through paypal, take insane currency conversion fees, or just straight up block me from signing up.

Volume mostly comes from coloring and understanding light, which is it's own beast but can very much be learned from similar reference materials and observing it IRL!

My favorite places to get reference are medical diagrams, weird pictures I take of myself, 3D software (often Virt-a-mate) and questionably phrased image google searches.

My favorite artists are Jason Shawn Alexander and Sean Murphy, but I'm not sure how much of it reflects in my art nowadays! I generally seek to pick up techniques from artists rather than to emulate style.

I've been in a real Chelsea Wolfe and Amyl And The Sniffers kick lately! But usually you'll also find me listening to stuff like Boy Harsher, Swans, FWF, JK Flesh Lingua Ignota, Nick Cave, David Bowie, and so on. Music for the weird gays, basically.

I went insane and wrote a 23-chapter-long-and-still-ongoing fic in like four months. But also - I'm not that good, I'm just shamelessly pretentious LOL

Hm. That's a good question, but I'm not really sure. Sincerely not trying to be a edgier-than-thou here (in fact, this has made me a little self conscious at one time or another) but a lot of art that I don't mean to be horror-y in nature at all has been associated with the genre. So perhaps I don't know what I'm doing either, LOL.

I think just leaning on making things look slightly "wrong" or "ugly" on purpose is the way, but I also find that if you just seek to depict people as they are instead of idealized versions of themselves, you will arrive at that either way.

I read a lot of Chuck Palahniuk as a youth (and, no slight to people who do like him still, but nowadays I'm not sure why I ever did. His stories don't speak to me at all anymore) as well a lot of weird experimental lit that I didn't even care to remember the name of. My last book stint from one or two years ago was composed solely of historical and medical literature, and last year I got really into Cormac Mcarthy thanks to the internet.

So, all in all, I'm absolutely all over the place LOL if you put a gun to my head and told me to list my favorite books, I'd say The Indifferent Stars Above and Blood Meridian.

I'm also aware that my reputation in this fandom will always be tainted bc of the callout post about me a few years ago and there's nothing I can do about that. once someone is labeled an asshole in this fandom they have no trial they're guilty until proven innocent and they're never proven innocent. and if you're aware of what happened you know they also accused me of lying about abuse I suffered in childhood up to an adult and that I was lying about mental illness symptoms I have. which should kinda clue you in that since they lied about 2/3 they lied about 3/3 statements.

I have complicated feelings toward the content of this research.

ON THE ONE HAND: I agree friendship and non-romantic/non-sexual relationships are under-developed and under-appreciated in modern media. 100% true and 100% a problem in our media landscape. I absolutely agree the overall balance is off and recalibrating it would probably be beneficial and warranted.

ON THE OTHER HAND: I am REALLY frightened and disturbed by young liberal people internalizing the notion that sex needs to be "necessary" or "justified" in a piece of media. And here's why...

Because the idea of sex needing to be highly "justified" in order to exist a highly puritanical idea that -- at the deepest level -- is responsible for a lot of modern and historical queerphobia.

The reason it seemed logical to treat gay sex (and therefore queer people) as 'sinful'/bad/wrong/against God's plan/etc. is because it served "no purpose." It was just decadence with no "higher value" (i.e., procreation). That's the root of so much homophobia and queerphobia both now and in the past. And it truly scares me that young queer people are starting to uncritically reiterate that idea without any appreciation for how damaging it has been, and how much pain it has caused.

We need to be really, Really, REALLY, REALLY careful with this whole Is the Sex 'Justified' framework we are starting to bring (back) to the way we approach sexual content within the public sphere (entertainment media, social media, etc.). That framework treats sex as Guilty Until Proven Innocent. Which is VERY dangerous to queer communities and queer people.

And I do want to stress, it's not that I've never seen uses of sex in media that seemed perfunctory or gratuitous IN THE SENSE THAT it was clearly just so a woman could take her top off purely to be titillating, or a male character could be shown as extra ~macho~/manly because he fucks. I've seen that, and I don't love it either.

But we can critique those uses of sex in media WITHOUT falling into the trap of - Sex is BY DEFAULT Gratuitous/Guilty until Proven Innocent (innocent meaning justified 800 ways to Sunday). That is taking the whole thing way too far in the other direction. And believe me, most of history exists in that other direction and IT WAS VERY VERY BAD. You don't want any piece that, I assure you.

TIM WALZ RUMORS: Reporters who accompanied Tim Walz to Friday's Mankato West High School football game felt a strange tension between the candidate and the parents and students.

The fact is that Walz tenure at Mankato West was fraught with rumors about inappropriate behavior with male students.

While he was never charged with a crime his alleged behavior was the subject of school board meetings. Mankato is a small town and the rumors, true or not, have merely grown as his role on the national stage has grown.

To be clear, it is not uncommon for high school students to make up the most vile rumors about each other and even their teachers. There is very little proof any of the commonly repeated rumors have any basis in reality.

That being said they do explain why Tim Walz gets such a cold reception in Mankato. For clarity here are the commonly repeated rumors about Walz tenure at Mankato between 1996 and 2006:

• Arrested for DUI 1995 forcing him to leave his teaching position in Nebraska and move to Minnesota

• Helped start a support group for gay students in 1999 known as the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) forging close relationships with the schools gay students

• Allowed a gay student to spend the night in his home

• Took the same gay student to a gay bar

• Reportedly had a sexual relationship with another male student earning him 'Touchdown Timmy' nickname

• Accompanied students to an Indigo Girls concert followed by a visit to another gay bar Are any of these rumors true?

Only a handful of people know for sure. We know there are nuggets of truth in many of the rumors but at the end of the day unless the victims want to come forward we will never know the truth for sure.

As for me I say Tim is innocent until proven guilty but I understand why his community treats him the way they do..

I'm a gay man, can I say that ask is homophobic and anyone asking for proof is homophobic too ? Of course accusations of bigotry are more credible when coming from the victim group, I'd believe a Mexican saying something's offensive to them a lot more than a white American saying something's offensive to Mexicans, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna discard all critical thinking the moment I hear "bigotry". INTRO

On October 7th 2023 the Palestinian Islamic Fundamentalist Terror Organisation HAMAS committed an atrocity in Israel. Their crimes against humanity included rape, torture and the murder of over 1400 people including babies. They live streamed their crimes to the internet in a move to designed to add degradation to the victims and to instill fear and terror in Jews and the civilised world. 

Since this war on Jews and civilisation began I’ve been devoting huge amounts of time trying to provide simple, no-nonsense analysis that offers humour, Jewish pride and morally just aggression. The latter is important. You can be equipped with the best information in the world, but if you don’t have the courage to go out there and say it, what’s the point. 

It also communicates our need to stop being defensive and playing into the hands of Hamas. Their tactic is to throw all manner of accusations at Israel so that so we’re constantly being prosecuted and having to justify ourselves. We are not on trial. They are the guilty ones. They committed this atrocity. There needs to be less explaining and more attacking. Go on the offensive. Every time they pull us into rebuffing some absurd lie they are distracting the world from what they did to Jewish men, women and children and why people are now suffering in a legitimate war of self-defence. Keep the spotlight on them always. They are Islamic fundamentalist, muslim supremacists - racist terrorists who kill babies and non-Muslims. They are sadists and torturers. They are killers of gays and rapists of women. An ISIS style gang of criminals. Britain and America gave no ceasefire for the Nazis and there can be no ceasefire for Hamas - villains who have picked up the torch of Nazism. There is no prospect for peace for anyone in the Middle East until the world eradicates them. This is the only thing that can create conditions for some kind of future to be discussed.

As this content has proven popular, I am collating it here in a series of articles titled LEE KERN ON HAMAS. The articles will be numbered. This is the first.

Okay, so about the hateful bigot on my town’s council.

[Quick summary: Trumpy homophobic Karen is on the town council. Last year THK was charged with defrauding $63000 from SNAP and medical assistance. THK also responded to me speaking about being a member of the queer community in town at a meeting a couple of months ago by sneering to my mom, who’s also on council, “I didn’t know your daughter was ✨ like THAT ✨.” You’re goddamn right I am. *flips nonexistent ponytail, nearly falls out of chair I’m sitting weirdly in*]

The majority of the council has done approximately jack shit in response to THK’s charges and upcoming trial. No job restrictions, no asking her to resign, nothing. They keep saying she’s innocent until proven guilty, which … okay, true, but also you miiiiiiight want to set up precautions just in case she IS found guilty. Just saying.

Anyway, her trial is next month. My mom is frustrated with the rest of the council essentially wrapping THK in bubble wrap, and they’re frustrated with my mom because my mom isn’t going to stand for this bullshit much longer. Now, I’ve got my mom AND the mayor asking if I’d say a few words at the council meeting tomorrow night. (Our mayor is openly gay and sick of her shit, too.)

So I am. Even though I hate public speaking. But I hate bullshit more (I am my mom’s kid), and at this point I’m literally WAY less mad at THK than I am at the town council. If she’s found guilty next month, they knowingly allowed someone they knew allegedly defrauded state welfare services of tens of thousands of dollars continue to do her job exactly as she had been doing and they did NOTHING. Not one damn thing.

Anyway, I wrote a speech calling them out and almost being *nice* to THK. Also, my mom just sent me a copy of tomorrow’s agenda and it lists THK having a statement to make at the end of the meeting labeled as “Exposure.” I would be speaking toward the beginning of the meeting during public comments. So either she’s going to complain she’s being picked on, or she’s going to resign.

I wonder if it’s too much to hope for that the tooth that just broke tonight while I’m at work either gets pulled tomorrow and requires painkillers or is in excruciating pain by the time of the meeting so I can just speak and leave.
