As someone who is neither native English speaking nor a player of early roguelike games (or the game rogue for that matter) ... I always assumed they were games where you have to play with stealth as a rogue... like assassins Creed stealth and just thought "man why are all these sneaking games just... like dungeon crawlers"

"You shouldn't call video game genres [thing]likes because" buddy, it's a natural transitional state. Lots of video game genres started out being named after their most notable entry or entries. FPSes used to be called "Doom clones" before evolving their own terminology. Some genres never do, and people just forget about the original game and keep the name. How many roguelike fans are familiar with Rogue? How many adventure game fans even know the genre is named after a game called Adventure?

Not tumblr but discord scam

If you are on public servers (for online games or modding etc) people can contact you if they are on the same server

A lot of scammers will join those servers especially for that.

Got contacted through one of those by an "artist" who claimed to have randomly picked me to offer a cheap commission since its shortly before xmas

They had a whole twitter set up with commission examples and comments from happy customers.

What tipped me off was that they had 3D, 2D and animation art in vastly different styles and skill levels all rather recent

And the commenting accounts were opened at roughly the same time.

I played along and asked for their rates. They didn't have any, said they would price it on the convenience of the buyer

Asked them to send me examples. They dropped oodles of pics in my discord of vastly different genre, skill, style, medium. All watermarked with their names.

Still managed to reverse search one

contacted the og artist to inform them, then reported the scammer to the discord server owner who banned them

which makes them unable to contact any more fellow members of the server

But they will surely hop onto another server.

The scam here is likely getting your money and then absconding with it.

No artist is gonna pic random people from a server neither of them have ever interacted on to offer commissions

And no artist who supposedly draws like Kaori Yuki will give you their badly traced Spiderman pic in the same reference drop as their blender furry OC rig

Don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but I have recently come across a new scam targeting fanfiction, and so I think it needs to be shared just in case. I have now gotten two messages from two separate "people" with brand shiny new accounts linked to brand shiny new social media accounts claiming to be so enamored with my work that they want to create art. And having been blessed by wonderful artists and fellow writers inspired by my Farah the Fern and other works, I was absolutely flattered, and encouraged them to go forth and be creative in whatever manner their heart desired.

And then they asked me for money so they could turn my fanfiction into a real book with art 🙃

This latest scammer went the extra mile, and created accounts with stolen artwork from other wonderful artists.

What a disgraceful time we live in, where scammers think it's okay to target anyone, but now also hardworking creators who create things for free and attempt to pretend to be one of those artists and scam others out of money. And are now using the works of those artists to do it!

Stay vigilant ❤️
