Samuel Barber & Gian Carlo Menotti

This Pride Month H2shO™️ CLASSICAL celebrates  LGBTQ+ classical music composers & conductors, from the prolific composers to the lesser known, who have been great contributors to music history.

While Samuel Barber was still a teenager at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, he met fellow student Gian Carlo Menotti. For six decades, the two distinguished composers would became partners in life and in music. 

Barber’s most famous composition is his “Adagio for Strings,” written while he and Menotti spent a summer in a rented house on Wolfgangsee, Austria (near Salzburg) in 1936. The Adagio was one of President John F Kennedy’s favorites. Included is a photograph taken of couples Jackie Kennedy & John, Samuel Barber and Gian Carlo Menotti taken a week before the President was killed.

Menotti wrote the libretti for two of Samuel Barber's operas, Vanessa and A Hand of Bridge, as well as revising the latter for another opera, Antony and Cleopatra. 

By the early 1970’s, the classical music power couple parted. Barber became reclusive and suffered from alcoholism after enduring harsh criticism of his later works. Menotti moved to Scotland in 1973. The break-up may have hastened Barber's decline. But when Barber died in 1981, Menotti was by his side. Theirs is a complicated love story.

Never would have happened because they were both like deeply deeply traumatised but I think the funniest thing that could have happened is if Wu Ming just panicked every time Xie Lian looked at him like proper girl with a crush, falling over bins, horny on main, word vomit I think it would have cured Xie Lian of his mental illness and given him like 8 new ones.

I still find it very funny that in the ashes of memory storyline when Alice, Orpheus and Frederick were in the racecourse and Frederick pulled out a gun on them Orpheus told Alice that he must be experienced because he has bruises on his palms but the thing is. Frederick was wearing gloves at all times whenever he left his room because of his condition so like. How did Orpheus know he had bruises on his palms. Is there something you want to share with the class Mr. Novelist?

Late night sketch of Mozart from memory, because I love him. One would think I’d draw him more, as obsessed with him as I am. I used his own painted reference of the deformity in his left ear. Apparently he also had a little earring? It’s cute.

Mozart knew he was not particularly attractive so he made up for this by taking fastidious care of his appearance, being funny, and often placing his talent on display before himself.
