▶ Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation continues to hold protests demanding payment of construction costs for ‘Cheonwon Palace’

The client’s multiple design changes, construction delays, and increased construction costs “Do this like this. Do that like that.” Interfering with each other. “Work instructions are different in the morning and evening, today and tomorrow” “This seems to be the essence of this organization’s culture.” “This seems to be the reality of this organization.” (Unification Church complex construction official)
Subcontractors who failed to receive construction costs for the construction of Cheonji Seonhakwon, or Cheonwon Palace, are visiting the Gapyeong Unification Church complex to hold protests demanding payment. At the beginning of this year, construction workers protested in front of the Cheonjeonggung Palace in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, over unpaid wages from Seonwon Construction. Then, on November 18, a group protest was held in front of the Cheongshim Peace World Center in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, demanding immediate payment of the construction costs from the Unification Church Foundation, the ordering party, as the subcontractor of Seonwon Construction delayed settlement after the completion of construction by the Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation.
On the sidewalk in front of the Cheongshim Peace World Center in Misari-ro, Seorak-myeon, Gyeonggi Province, loudspeakers, drums, gongs, rally vehicles, and company employees mobilized to demand payment of the construction costs.
▲ Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation construction cost payment demand rally in front of the Cheongshim Peace World Center in Gapyeong
“The Unification Church Foundation, which delayed construction by changing the design several times and turned a blind eye to payment of the construction costs, should reflect.” “How can a religious group not pay even half of the construction costs?” “The ordering party, the Unification Church Foundation, should take responsibility and resolve the issue.” “The Unification Church’s Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation should resolve the unpaid balance.” “The construction project was extended from June 2019 to February 2023, and the final settlement amount in September 2023 was also violated. Fulfill the agreement.”
Seonwon Construction is a construction company that is highly dependent on the Unification Church Group, with Unification Church-ordered projects accounting for half of its sales. The ordering party for the Cheonwon Palace construction project is also the Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation. The company is being criticized for pushing ahead with the Cheonwon Palace (Cheonji Seonhakwon) construction despite the financial difficulties, which has increased the Cheonwon Palace construction cost by hundreds of billions of won. Despite this, the increase in construction costs has not been properly reflected in the subcontractors, which is causing a backlash. It appears that the damage caused by Seonwon Construction’s failure to resolve the unsettled balance while under court receivership is directly affecting the subcontractors and related workers. The Unification Church group ‘Seonwon Construction’, which has entered court receivership, is known to own approximately 43% of the World Peace and Unification Family Federation Maintenance Foundation, approximately 40% of the Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation, and approximately 9% of HJ Development. ‘Seonwon Construction’, which has gone bankrupt, has virtually no shares. It is a company owned by the Unification Church Foundation.
Cheonwon Palace (Cheonji Seonhakwon) is a building with 4 underground floors and 2 above-ground floors on a 38,000-pyeong site, and the 1st and 2nd floors will be used as an exhibition hall for the peace movement and vision of Hak Ja Han Moon. It is an exhibition hall commemorating the life of the founder, and is no different from a shrine.
The original construction period was from June 2019 to the end of December 2020, but it is said that the construction was halted in parts due to frequent design changes by the Unification Church, the client. So, the subcontractor requested the general contractor ‘Seonwon Construction’ dozens of times to pay indirect management costs (additional personnel, equipment, material costs, etc.) due to the 26-month final extension period until the end of February 2023, and discussed the final settlement amount until September 2023, but did not settle the settlement.
Then, early this year, Seonwon Construction was under court receivership (filed for court rehabilitation) and it became difficult to pay the settlement amount. Therefore, settlement negotiations with the ordering party were conducted from March 2024, but the negotiations broke down due to an unreasonably low amount being proposed during the final negotiation process. The company’s position is that it is natural to be compensated for losses due to the Unification Church’s design changes and other attributable reasons during the 26-month extension period from the end of December 2020 to the end of February 2023. It has been reported that the Seonwon Construction side reported to the ordering party that approval from the ordering party is necessary due to the contractual relationship between the ordering party, the Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation and the Course & P, and that they are asking for the ordering party to wait. A Seonwon Construction official said, “We are currently under court receivership and are unable to receive funds. We are currently in talks with the subcontractor. We are trying to resolve the issue.”
▲ A rally demanding payment of construction costs by the Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation in front of the Gapyeong Cheongsim Peace World Center
Construction delays, increased construction costs, re-construction, and re-working due to design changes, as above, have also occurred in other construction projects.
Last September, a construction worker who left the ‘Begonia Bird Garden’ (flower garden) within the Unification Church complex left a note saying, “Leaving the flower garden…”
At that time, “After construction began, civil engineering work and ground preparation work were done on the site where the building would sit. Since the drawings for the visitor center construction were not available, the greenhouse was constructed first, but since this also had to be constructed in parts, the construction period and construction cost inevitably increased. The visitor center should have been constructed first and then the greenhouse should have been constructed, but the client provided a reason for the increase in construction period and construction cost due to delays in permits and construction drawings. In the spring of 2022, the exterior landscaping work began, and during the busy and hectic days, the client interfered by saying, “Do this like this. Do that like that.” and harassed the contractor and ordered rework and reconstructing. In the midst of all this, they ordered additional work and told the contractor to do it later, but when it came time to settle the account, they said, “This is expensive, that is expensive, this is an incomprehensible amount,” and ignored the contract and instructions in the settlement with the contractor, applying only the part that is favorable to the client. It was the same with the construction and civil engineering work. They ignored the design documents and gave different work instructions every morning and evening, today and tomorrow, and told us to fix it and reconstruct it. Even in the greenhouse interior production, we finished the drawings, videos, and structural reviews for several months, but they told us to follow the Japanese model from 30 to 40 years ago…” Then, “This seems to be the essence of this organizational culture.” “This seems to be the reality of what is happening in this organization,” he concluded his article.
In early October, on the day of the one-man protest in front of the Cheongshim Peace World Center to expose the corruption of Unification Church leaders, a Unification Church believer said, “They are building it on a larger scale,” regarding the delay in the construction of Cheonwon Palace.
The construction costs… come from the pockets of believers who are struggling to survive.

Unification Church is shaking
Once again, another Twitter thread from @nowwarmom - posted on May 24, 2023. Since this thread references news posted by @cult_and_fraud, his tweets shall also be included in the beginning. The translation of cult_and_fraud’s tweets is very rough, especially with names. Feel free to skip down to nowwarmom’s tweets.
from (cult_and_fraud)
President Hak Ja Han of the Unification Church after completing the ``80th Birth Anniversary Ceremony,'' ``Mass Wedding,'' and ``Dedication Ceremony for Cheonwon Palace'' on May 7.
On May 9, Hak Ja Han dismissed Yoon Hwang-ho, the head of the World Mission Headquarters, who was the number 2 in the sect, and on May 18, it was reported that Sun Myung Moon's unifying principle of creation was denied.
Unification Church in a quake.
Like Kim Hyo-nam, Yun Ho-nam will be dismissed for embezzlement of public funds. "Public money" means money taken from victims in Japan. Yun Yong-ho is reported to have invested billions in the Mekong River project with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Chung Won-ju, head of the presidential secretary, who is hostile to Yoon Hoon-ho, and Choi, the wife of Hyo-jin Moon, the eldest son of Sun Myung Moon and Hak-ja Han, reported to Hak-ja Han about Yoon's embezzlement of public funds. Hak Ja Han appoints Song Yong-cheon, former president of the Japan General Assembly, as the world president. "Developed Japan"Yang Chang-sik appointed as UPF World President. Han Hak Ja is the UPF president. Han Hak Ja strengthens the president's secretary office. The 1st Secretariat manages the Family Federation (Unification Church) and the UPF, and the head of the secretariat is Wen Yea. The head of the second secretary office is Chung Wonju. (Last summer, Hak Ja Han took Jeong Won-ju to a casino in Las Vegas to gamble, and Weekly Bunshun reported that he spends his followers' donations on the casino?) Hak Ja Han: “There is no mission headquarters anymore. We need to integrate with the Family Federation and become one with the training center and focus on returning to Gapyeong. Hak Ja Han: Have we fulfilled our responsibilities? Five district presidents! Did the number of members increase? Achievements are important. How can we return to the nation in four years? But a couple of states should be able to come back." Hak Ja Han: “All World Mission Branches must become Family Federations.” “Buddha must become a child before the True Parents. “In order to restore 8 billion people, the UPF must create an environment in which the Family Federation will be the center of the celebration.” Is Hak Ja Han denying Sun Myung Moon's principle of unification? On May 18, he spoke in front of 70 executives after a luxury sightseeing cruise on Lake Cheongpyeong. Hak Ja Han denies the principle of creation. He denied and dismantled the Unification Principle of Sun Myung Moon, and built a new doctrine centered on the female Messiah, the "Only Begotten Daughter" Han Hak Ja. Hak Ja Han: "The source of life is born through Mother. Men are 0.001%, mothers are 99.999%, and Heavenly Parent is the same." “In the Divine Principle, there is a neutralizing subject of dual nature. This is not it. We need to correct that.” In the Magnolia Group, which was run by the Yun Ho family, Christina Han, who deals in expensive precious metals that Japanese believers have been forced to buy, is revived. The building of the Magnolia Group was also interviewed locally in Cheongpyeong, South Korea. Tuxedos and wedding dresses priced from 500,000 to 1,000,000 yen were also confirmed during the joint wedding coverage on May 7th.

A message from His Majesty The King, read at the reception for Korean War veterans.
"I am delighted that so many of you are able to attend today's reception, a rather belated gathering, I fear, to mark seventy years having passed since the end of the Korean War. It has been a personal ambition of mine to invite you all, in some form, to Buckingham Palace to recognise this significant milestone and ensure you are all most deservingly honoured for your valiant service over seventy years ago. You might therefore imagine how particularly disappointed and frustrated I am to not be able to join you all in person... I can only hope that you are being well looked after in my absence and I am most grateful to the Princess Royal and the Duchess of Edinburgh for standing in for me.
As you will know all too well, some 60,000 British and 50,000 Commonwealth servicemen and women served in the Korean War, alongside our United Nations Allies. During the Armistice in July 1953, President Eisenhower declared: "We shall fervently strive to ensure that this armistice will, in fact, bring free peoples one step nearer to their goal of a world at peace." Thanks to those of you present, and those you fought alongside, the free peoples of the Republic of Korea continue to experience democratic liberty and have proudly preserved peace ever since. This enduring legacy was further commemorated during the recent Korean State Visit, when President Yoon himself declared that Korea would not have the political freedom, economic prosperity and flourishing culture today, that has extended far beyond its borders, without your bravery all those years ago.
It is our duty to remember what was once called "the Forgotten War". Next month, like every year, your fellow veterans will meet in Solma-Ri, Gapyeong and Busan to commemorate the Battles of the Imjin and Gapyeong and to remember those who fell in the service of the United Nations Command on the Korean Peninsula. In a world where freedoms are continually being challenged and our values scrutinised, your selfless courage and steadfast pursuit of peace are guiding principles which have not been forgotten and continue to inspire generations to come. We salute all those who remain among us, and offer our most heartfelt and undying gratitude for those who have gone before. Your service and your sacrifice will echo through the ages."
Princess Anne reads a message from King Charles III about the British and Commonwealth service men and women who served in the Korean war during a reception for Korean war veterans, which she hosted on behalf of King Charles III, on 19 March 2024.

Let's Get Some Seoul | South Korea Part 1 |
Let’s Get Some Seoul | South Korea Part 1 |
Seoul to me feels so alive in its own existence. It is a city alive within itself, creating its own magic, celebrating its own heritage. It is a place truly unlike any other. The first day we went to see the opening of the palace gates ceremony at Gyeongbokgung Palace. This was by far my favorite part of the trip, seeing such a historical ceremony right before my eyes. Created in 1395, the…

Bye, Korea
I taught English in Busan, Korea for a year, ending June 2011. I remember the dread I felt flying to Portland then. I left Portland again and returned to Korea February 2013. I felt like I was home. Since then, I’ve quit teaching and I’ve been working remotely for almost four years. When I flew back to Portland in August 2017, without any intention of coming back to South Korea, butterflies (different from before) filled my stomach.
I love Korea and it’s been a great experience living there. I love learning more about where I come from and improving on the language. I also know in my heart that I’m American and that I want to create my home in the U.S.
For the last month in Korea, I walked around as if in a trance. I can’t believe how much time has passed and how much life has changed. I miss singing along with my appliances (i.e. rice cooker and washing machine) and waking up with tinfoil in my bed because I fell asleep eating kimbap.
I feel nostalgic for a time, as well as places, which is an overwhelming feeling. It’s scary to think of returning to Korea, and think of the last time I left, as if no time had passed at all. Time goes fast, life is short, and the impermanence of things is hitting me harder than it ever has.
I did SO much in Korea, met amazing people, ate all the things, and had amazing experiences. But, still, I know I can’t do everything I wanted to do or do things again. There are so many places to go in this world, but maybe I’ll be back. Because I obsessively make lists, here’s a list of places I wanted to experience but didn’t make the time for:
Andong Traditional Folk Village - Rural Korea is a sharp contrast from the fast-paced neon and concrete cityscapes. I never went to the mask festival at the end of September and beginning of October each year. Apparently this is the town for some awesome chicken, as well.
Anyang Art Park (안양예술공원) - This a cool park in Anyang City that's free and a photo dream. You can get off at Anyang Station (Line 1) and take bus number 2 to the park. It's a very large place and it might be a bit confusing, but so many photo worthy spots. Definitely wear walking shoes and bring water in this heat!
Beopgi basin - Nestled in the mountains just 45 minutes north of Busan. Renting a car and visiting Hongryong Falls (홍룡폭포) would be a great way to spend a day.
Beopjusa temple stay - Literally “Mountain Removed from Worldliness,” Songnisan is where the 7th-century Buddhist Beopjusa temple is still located. It has the largest buddha in Korea.
Bukchon Village - I’ve been here before but really wanted to visit this picturesque neighborhood again. It’s flanked by two palaces —Gyeongbok Palace to the west and Changdeok Palace to the east— this village has the largest cluster of privately owned traditional Korean wooden homes or hanok in Seoul. The easiest way to get to Bukchon in Seoul is to go out Anguk Station (subway line 3) Exit 3.
Cheongdo - I probably couldn’t stomach the bull fights but I always wanted to see the Wine Tunnel (인 터널).
I really wanted to go to Chuncheon/Gapyeong again just to eat the Dak Galbi (닭갈비). I could eat dalkkalbi every day, and it really is the best where it was invented. The two best places are “Tong Na Mu Jip” and “1.5.″
I’ve been to Geoje several times, but, yeah, I want to go again. I’d love to hike up Mt. Daegumsan, take a short boat ride to Oedo Island, and ride the zipline at Deokpo Beach.
I visited my friend Anne in Suwon when she was teaching a camp there, but I didn’t have the time to explore the Hwaseong Fortress (수원 화성) or Toilet Museum.
Jeonju - I’d like to try the bibimbap and visit the Hanok Village (전주 한옥마을).
Jirisan - What a shame that I never made it to the top of this mountain. I’ll always cherish the lovely trips I’ve had out there and only wish I could have spent more time there.
Kimchi Museum - I walked by this place so many times in Insadong but never went. Where else in the world will you be able to go to a museum solely dedicated to the Korean staple, kimchi? Kimchi, or seasoned fermented vegetables, is at the heart of Korean culture and its food and is usually eaten with every meal. There are 187 different documented types, ranging from kimchi of different ripeness levels to water kimchi, cucumber kimchi, and radish kimchi varieties. In addition, it is not uncommon for Korean households to have refrigerators solely dedicated for the storage of kimchi. At the museum, you can taste 7-8 different types of kimchi, view bacteria found in kimchi under a microscope, and even learn how to make kimchi in the education room.
Oh, to see Kyeongju again. Korea used to be divided into three major kingdoms (Silla, Baekje, and Goguryeo) until the Silla kingdom conquered the other kingdoms and made Gyeongju the capital. Gyeongju remained the capital of this region for approximately 1000 years, leading to the creation of a number of archaeological treasures that are well worth your time.
On several visits to Seoul, I missed out visiting a Hanbok Cafe in Insadong or the Princess Diary Cafe outside Exit 3 of the Ehwa Women’s University subway station. These dress cafes give you the opportunity to wear a Korean traditional dress or wedding dress at rental prices of 15,000₩ ~ 40,000₩ an hour.
TheRobo Life Museum in Pohang does require a reservation but looks pretty awesome. Some are miniature robots programmed to be Psy back up dancers, some are robotic fish that swim, and some are robotic seals designed for therapy.
Seonyudo sits off the west coast of the peninsula, 90 minutes from Gunsan by boat.
Seoraksan again. It was so lovely in the fall --but I see endless beauty in every season.
Seoul Fortress Trail, the Naksan section covers an enjoyable scenic route from Hansung University Station and the Hyehwa Gate traveling south alongside Naksan Park and Ihwa Mural Village until you arrive in the crowded, neon streets of Dongdaemun with the landmark Dongdaemun Gate at the foot of the pathway. The route itself doesn’t take too long to cover with sunset a recommended time to visit so as to enjoy the spectacular views across the city at their finest. Accessible from Hansung University Station, Seoul Subway Line 4 Exit 4.
Seoul Palaces - There are a lot of them (e.g. Gyeonghui Palace. Deoksugung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Gyeongbokgung) and many are near each other. I always planned to see them all but ultimately got a distracted or bored.
Seoul Forest - This park was opened in 2005 and features absolute beauty. It’s a bit of a trip from downtown Seoul, but I’ve heard it has five connected parks and it’s possible to see deer Located outside Seoul Forest Station (Subway Bundang Line) Exit 3.
Ujeon Beach in “Slow City”
Controversy aside, I wanna see Ulleungdo + Dokdo.
Uponeup (우포늪) is the largest and oldest wetland area in Korea, a protected area that dates back to times when dinosaurs ruled the world. A favouite with Korean photographers due to the unspoiled setting and views that the wetlands offer up, it sounds like a romantic weekend.
Yeosu is a port city on South Korea’s East China Sea coast. I haven’t researched what to do there but I’ve always wanted to visit.
I don’t know much about the city of Yulpo but when my friend Allison went, she couldn’t wait to share: “I just spent three days there and visited the big tea plantation ten minutes away (TWICE!). It's a tiny farm village next to an empty beach. And there is a green tea spa on the beach. It was heaven.”
Alright, Korea, maybe next time.

I’ve been the type of person who always plans ahead of time where they’ll celebrate their birthday. After travelling to VISA free countries, I thought why not celebrate it in a OECD country.
OECD (the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) is an international organization which countries who are considered members of it, stimulate economic progress and world trade.
Ranked as the 11th largest economy in the world, South Korea has drawn the world’s attention for being a popular tourist destination, notably among us Filipinos. Hence comes the question if we need a VISA. YES, we do! Don’t fret though cause South Korea’s VISA is not only easy but also FREE.

TRAVELLING TO SEOUL FROM INCHEON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Almost all of the international flights land at Incheon International Airport Terminal 1, including Cebu Pacific and there are several ways to get to downtown Seoul.
BY AIRPORT RAILROAD EXPRESS (AREX Express Train): The fastest way to get to downtown Seoul (Seoul Station) in exactly 43 minutes, without any station stops. A one-way ticket costs KRW 9000 for adults and KRW 7000 for children. Save even more on the adult fare if you purchase beforehand in Klook (KRW 6400). Be advised though that the train only runs from 5:23 AM until 10:48 PM.
BY AIRPORT RAILROAD EXPRESS (AREX All Stop Train): The second fastest way to get to downtown Seoul (Seoul Station) in approximately 58 minutes, with 13 subway station stops. A one-way ticket costs KRW 4150 with a T-Money Card. Take note that the train only runs from 5:25 AM until 11:39 PM.
BY BUSES: Take it only if you’re arriving during off hours as its way more expensive and takes longer than the subway. You can inquire at the Airport Information Desk on the 1st floor for the late-night airport buses to Seoul Station which costs KRW 9000.
BY TAXI: Most convenient yet the most expensive as it will roughly cost you KRW 60 000 – 80 000. The drop charge is KRW 3600 and the distance charge is KRW 120.
HOW TO GET AROUND
Seoul’s subway system is pretty efficient that you won’t need any other form of transportation. Most subway fare costs KRW 1250 for short distance trips. It can be a bit confusing but look around for these signs.
Take note where your nearest entrance is from and to where you are going.
Look out for these head signs as it tells you which way to go depending on the line number.
It tells you the line number’s transfer lines, last stop and which station is it headed next.
Watch out for the arrow sign which tells what’s the next subway station.
The only time we used a different mode of transportation was when we got on a bus on our way to N Seoul Tower, and when I rode a taxi back to the hostel as I was out after 11 PM when the buses and subways’ operating hours end.
Heads up though, Seoul requires heaps of walking so make sure to wear your comfiest shoes.
MONEY SAVING TIPS

WHAT TO DO IN KOREA
1.) Relive the Joseon Period in a Hanbok and get lost in a maze of traditional houses at Bukchon Hanok Village
Hanbok is the traditional Korean dress worn by both men and women during festivals and celebrations. There are plenty of hanbok rental shops near the Village or the Palace, but you can rent in advance through Klook for KRW 15 000 for 4 hours.
Bukchon Hanok Village will take you back in time as it is a maze of narrow alleyways and traditional Korean houses called hanoks. Regardless of being a tourist destination, please be respectful as it is still a neighborhood.

Subway Station: Anguk Station (Line 3), Exit 1 or 2
2.) Watch the Changing of the Guards at Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palace
Seoul has five Joseon royal palaces, but these two are the ones you shouldn’t miss. Gyeongbokgung the main palace where the changing of guards happen at 10 AM has an entrance fee of KRW 3000 and closed on Tuesdays, while Changdeokgung, a UNESCO Heritage Site and home to Huwon, or the “Secret Garden” has an entrance fee of KRW 5000 and closed on Mondays.
Our feet were tired enough to explore both. However, if you plan on visiting all the palaces, get a discounted entrance ticket with the Integrated Palace Ticket for KRW 10 000. For those wearing a hanbok, you are free to enter the palaces.

Subway Station: Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3), Exit 5 or Anguk Station (Line 3) Exit 1
3.) See North Korea on the DMZ and JSA Tour
Demilitarized Zone refers to the 4 km wide buffer zone dividing the North and South Korea. Within the DMZ is the Joint Security Area where the North and South Korean soldiers stand face to face, regarding it as “the most dangerous place in Korea.”

You can book through Klook the DMZ Tour (Imjingak Park, Freedom Bridge, the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, the DMZ Exhibition Hall and Dora Observatory) for KRW 50 000, JSA Panmunjom Tour (Freedom House, Conference Room, Bridge of No Return and the Ax Murder Incident area) for KRW 86 100, or DMZ and JSA combined tour for KRW 130 000.
Please follow proper dress code: – Jeans are allowed as long as not faded, ripped, or torn in any way. – No shorts or skirts. – No shirts or tops without sleeves or exposing the midriff. – No sandals, flip-flops, or open-toed shoes. – No athletic, military, or oversized clothing.
4.) Spend the day being a kid at heart in Everland Resort
Everland is South Korea’s biggest theme park, made up of five themed zones— Global Fair, Zootopia, European Adventure, Magic Land, and American Adventure.
The most popular attractions at Everland are T Express, one of the world’s fastest wooden rollercoasters, and Panda World, which is home to a pair of giant pandas gifted to South Korea by Chinese president Xi Jinping as a sign of friendship.

The park, which dresses up to match the season, is big enough to make you hungry and thirsty, but you can get food and drinks at a reasonable price ranging from KRW 4000 — KRW 20 000 at their restaurants and snack bars.
We were lucky enough to catch both parades at 3:30 PM and 8:30 PM, however, we opted to skip the fireworks display at 9:30 PM because of the subway’s operating hours.
A one-day pass to Everland costs KRW 54 000 for adults, but you can get them for KRW 35 000 if you purchase them in advance through Klook.
Check out this blog post for a handful of details about Everland.
How to Get There: Gangnam Station (Line 2) → Joengja Station (Sinbundang Line) → Giheung Station (Bundang Line) then transfer to Jeondae Everland Station (Yongin Everline Line) → Take the free shuttle bus to Everland
5.) Visit Nami Island, Gangchon Rail Park, Petite France and Garden of the Morning Calm
Having no idea how Koreans celebrate Chuseok, we went off to Gapyeong in the hopes for the autumn foliage on my birthday. Thinking it will be an easy trip as it has been a favorite day trip, we started at 11 AM and got confused on how to get there as you can either take the subway or ITX. The traffic was severe too due to the holiday that we ended up exploring Nami Island only. Nevertheless, we made the most out of our day, and I will surely come back the next time I’m in the country. For now, you can head off to Travel Intern’s blog for more details on how to DIY the trip.
If you’re going to all four attractions in Gapyeong, it’s best that you avail the Gapyeong City Tour Bus, an unlimited bus ride within a day for KRW 6000. You can purchase the ticket from the bus captain and show it at every pickup point.
NAMI ISLAND
Nami Island, a tiny half-moon shaped island, is a must-visit for anyone travelling to South Korea and you can explore it in less than a day. Aside from being storybook beautiful, it is officially known as the Naminara Republic, a micronation with passport and flag. Before you can board a ferry onto the island, you’ll need to purchase an “entry visa” which costs KRW 10 000 for Koreans, but just KRW 8000 for foreigners.

6.) Lock your love and get the best view of the city on top of N Seoul Tower
Not only does N Seoul Tower give you sweeping aerial views of Seoul, but it’s where you can “lock your love” for all eternity as well.
You can get to the tower by either riding the shuttle bus for KRW 1250 or take the cable car for KRW 9500 for adults and KRW 6500 for kids roundtrip while one-way costs KRW 7000 for adults and KRW 4000 for kids.
The entrance to the Observatory is an additional KRW 10,000 for adults and KRW 8,000 for kids, but you can get them for KRW 6,400 and KRW 5,400 respectively if you purchase them in advance through Klook. The Observatory gives you a 360° panoramic view of the entire city, best during sunset or at night.

How To Get There:
— by Cable Car: Myeongdong Station, Exit 4 → walk straight towards the Hoehyeon Intersection to the right of Pacific Hotel → turn left towards Namsan Park/Tunnel which is up to the hill → take the Namsan Oreumi (slanted elevator), located at the entrance of Namsan Tunnel #3, connected to Namsan Cable Car
— by Shuttle Bus: Chungmuro Station, Exit 2 → go straight to the bus stop and ride Namsan Sunhwan Shuttle Bus No. 02 or 05
7.) Rejuvenate and relax in a jjimjilbang
A jjimjilbang is a gender-segregated public bathhouse in Korea where locals come to unwind, hang out and engage in a whole host of health and beauty rituals that go far beyond a quick soak.
I saw loads of this in Korean drama scenes and wanted to try it myself. Fortunately, a foreign friend happens to plan on staying overnight at one. Among all the bathhouse in Seoul, we went for the Siloam Spa near Seoul Station. On our way there, we passed by Seoullo 7017 or “SkyGarden“, which marks the transformation of an overpass highway to a pedestrian oasis in the middle of Seoul where you can get tourist information, rest, and have a light meal or snacks.
I paid KRW 12 000 for nighttime use and given a locker key to store my shoes. After doing so, I handed my locker key to the front desk, in exchange for a towel, a pair of pyjamas and a different locker key with a number on it where I stored my stuff which you can wear on your wrist.
What you need to know if you’re going to the gender-segregated baths, you need to go naked, bringing only a small towel and toiletries. Fear not! Koreans consider this normal in jjimjilbang. Before bathing, wash first and if you’re going to the saunas, change into the pyjamas.
You can get a scrub for an extra KRW 15 000 – KRW 20 000. Lastly cap off a good sweat with a cold sweet sikhye, a traditional fermented rice drink, or steamed sauna eggs called maekbanseok gyeran.
How to Get There: Seoul Station, Exit 3 and cross the streets then take the stair up to the Seoullo 7017
8.) Shop and eat till you drop
Seoul is a shopaholic’s paradise. There is so much to buy here, from accessories, clothes, foods, cosmetics and even socks may it be in the shops, streets or the subway.
©️wanderingpeople.wordpress.com
MYEONGDONG
Home to high-end brand stores and Korean cosmetics, the best time to come here is around dinner when the street stalls open so you can feast on street food while shopping.
©️wanderingpeople.wordpress.com
Subway Station: Myeongdong (Line 4), Exit 7
HONGDAE
Hongdae, the abbreviation of Hongik Daehakgyo, gives you an energetic hippie vibe as it’s home to one of the top fine arts colleges in South Korea, Hongik University. Aside from the artsy nooks and trendy clothes and accessories hanged for sale, it comes alive at night with the street performances and nightclubs blasting their stereos on. We party hard here on my birthday going home at 5 in the morning.
Subway Station: Hongik University (Line 2), Exit 8 or 9
EWHA WOMAN’S UNIVERSITY FASHION STREET
The streets around the university is a shopping haven for women. Before hitting the shops, take a few minutes to check out Korea’s largest underground campus, Ewha Campus Complex.
©️wanderingpeople.wordpress.com
This fashion street shopping unmistakably targets students at Ewha, so expect the shopping to be trendy and at the best bargain.
Subway Station: Ewha Woman’s University (Line 2), Exit
9.) Eat a live octopus in traditional market
If there’s one thing I wasn’t expecting on this trip, it’s eating a san-nakji or live octopus. Gomawo Sam!
Bought live before being chopped up and served raw on a plate, the tentacles continue to wriggle about for a long time despite being detached from the octopus’ body which contains ganglia. Drizzled with sesame seeds and served with a soy-wasabi dipping sauce, it was better than I had imagined. Just make sure to chew it well as there are reports of a few deaths by choking from the tentacles latching on to people’s throats.
We went to Namdaemun Market initially, but they close earlier due to Chuseok, Korean’s Thanksgiving Day. Luckily, we found a stall that still sells some octopus at Gwangjang Market. Expect to spend around KRW 10 000 per octopus with preparation.
10. Cafe hopping
Seoul has no lack of aesthetically-pleasing, eclectic and Instagram worthy cafés that you can spend a week just doing café hopping. We didn’t have much time to do it, but I’ll surely update the list the next time I’m in Seoul.
STYLENANDA PINK POOL CAFE This gorgeous pastel pool-themed café has got to be one of the Instagrammable places you should mark on your bucket list.

Subway Station: Myeongdong Station, Exit 6
LINE FRIENDS CAFE AND STORE
I didn’t have the chance to go to LINE Friends Cafe and Store in Itaewon, which is a 3-storey high building with a concept cafe at the top level. However as I passed by Ewha’s Fashion Street, I surprisingly found one of their flagship stores.

Subway Station: Itaewon Station, Exit 3
SAMPLE ITINERARY & BUDGET
A week isn’t enough to experience everything in Seoul but here’s a sample itinerary of the must-dos.
Like what I said in How Do You Travel, travelling doesn’t need to be expensive. What you need is thoughtful planning and sorting out the fixed and variable costs through budgeting.
Reserving and paying in advance makes the budgeting smoother too, still, do it only after you get your VISA approval. We booked our accommodation and most of our activities in Seoul a week after we got ours. Leaving us with the transportation, meals and extras (souvenirs, party expense) to plan out.
© wanderingpeople.wordpress.com
© wanderingpeople.wordpress.com
TOTAL
PHP 10 000 to spend before the trip and PHP 10 000 to spend in Korea with the meals and transportation expense. Have in mind that this estimate doesn’t include souvenir or shopping. If I spend more on that day, then I’d cut back in fickle expenses– it’s as simple as that.
A Week in Seoul, South Korea for PHP 20 000 I've been the type of person who always plans ahead of time where they'll celebrate their birthday.

South Korea | October 2016
The first time I set foot on Seoul, I swear I had tears in my eyes. It was indeed a dream come true.
| October 31 2016 - November 05 2016 |
After years of praying and wishing to travel to Korea, I was finally, finally able to fulfill my dream. Thanks to my mom who brought me along for her years-of-service incentive, thank you mom!
If there is one thing that you definitely have to know about me, it’s that I am a huge fan of the Korean Culture. Naturally and unsurprisingly, my love for Korea started with the Korean Pop Culture.
Year 2009 was when I first watched SHINee’s Ring Ding Dong music video (albeit not on purpose) during that one fateful lunch break. The song wouldn’t stop playing in my head until I arrived home from school so I booted up our PC, went on Youtube and the rest was ancient history.
Since then, I gradually fell more and more in love with not only their music but also their culture in general. So many years later - seven, to be exact - well, just imagine how frantic I became when my mother told me to start fixing my requirements for my visa processing.
It was really happening, me and my ugly silver nail polish couldn’t believe it was really happening.
Your typical flying-over-the-clouds shot.
Our flight bound to Korea was scheduled in the afternoon so when we arrived at the Incheon International Airport, it was already nighttime and all that was left for us to do was have dinner in our hotel and prepare for the next day.
We were signed up for a group tour so our full itinerary has been set up before hand. From our tours down to our meals, everything was already prepared.
The view from the highest point of “Le Petite France”, a small tourist spot in Gapyeong with a concept which encapsulates the famous French novel, “The Little Prince”.
The mountains in the background look like they were painted, don’t they?
On board the ferry boat ride to Nami Island.
Aside from being the perfect picnic spot, Nami Island is also famous for being a shooting location for the iconic “Winter Sonata” Korean drama series.
I absolutely adore Autumn. With its gentle breeze that is not too hot like the summer and not too cold like the winter. But I am more in love with the colors of Autumn, what with its leaves turning into a beautiful shade of auburn , sometimes a striking vermilion and at times even a fiery amber hue.
Pyeongchang (Yes, the Pyeongchang 2018) was also one of our destinations. In which we made ice cream from freshly squeezed sheep’s milk!
Hello, Mr. Sheep.
Next stop was Everland in Gyeonggi-do. My only regret was that I didn’t ride the T-Express on this trip because I didn’t want to ride it all by myself.
My mom’s outfit blends in!
An adorable bear waiting for her treat.
Can you guess what this well-lit street is?
If you guessed Myeongdong, then you’re absolutely right!
Myeongdong is one of the main shopping districts in Seoul and is very famous for tourists. In my opinion, it’s part of starter pack for first time travelers in Korea along with the N Seoul Tower and the Gyeongbokgung Palace but we’ll get to that in a bit.
This is sadly my one and only “decent” shot of the N Seoul Tower because one, it was cloudy and two, my iPhone 5S camera and my non-existent photography skills can only do so much, sobs.
The south gate of the Gyeongbokgung Palace. Located right in front of the Blue House or South Korea’s White House, if you know what I mean.
The north gate of the Gyeongbokgung Palace teeming with tourists of all ages and nationality.
The Gyeongbokgung Palace was the main palace (but not the only palace) of the Joseon dynasty. It served as the household of the Joseon dynasty Kings and the center of governance during the time.
The Hyangwonjeong Pavillion also known as, "Pavilion of Far-Reaching Fragrance”
As I mentioned earlier, I feel that it is very important for a first-time tourist to visit Myeongdong, the N Seoul Tower and the Gyeongbokgung Palace because these are the places where you can definitely see how the Korean culture was founded and had flourished since then, from the past on to the present. With these three destinations ticked off from your itinerary, you can finally roam around the rest of South Korea.

Seoul Story
A gushing rapid on the trail of the Bukhansan trek
During animmersion experience at KAIST in South Korea, IIMB’s one-year Global MBA students get insights into the country via field visits, projects and some adventures. Karthik Ramanathan shares his experience.
21 September, 2017, Bengaluru: It was eight o’clock in the evening on 13thAugust 2017: we, the students of the full-time Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP) at IIM Bangalore, were lugging our bags, getting ready to load them in the buses waiting to ferry us to the airport. Yes, the day that we had all been yearning for has arrived! Term 2 – the most dreaded of all terms – done and dusted, we were on our way to South Korea, Seoul in particular. The atmosphere in the bus during the nearly 90-minute ride to the airport was heady. Portable speakers were out; there was song and dance and unrestrained merriment. The mood had been set for the forthcoming fortnight.
No sooner did the flight take off, 30 minutes past midnight, that all the pent up exhaustion and fatigue of the last three days kicked in and knocked us out. We woke up to a wonderful view of the blue sea and small islands with green-topped hillocks – we were about to land in Hong Kong. Some of us had a fairly long layover in Hong Kong that allowed us to visit the city for a few hours. On landing we immediately made for the immigration counter to secure a clearance to enter the city, after which we took the airport express train to the city. The weather, though not hot, was quite humid. Our destination was the promenade from where the famous skyline of Hong Kong, across the sea, can be seen in all its glory. The route took us through some of the most upmarket localities of the city. The skyline itself was quite impressive, and it would have been a sight to behold at night. After spending about an hour on the promenade we headed back to the airport.
The flight from Hong Kong to Seoul was all about friendly chatter, snacks and movies. We landed in Seoul quite late but were warmly welcomed by students from KAIST, our host school. What struck us about the South Koreans immediately was their humility and hospitable nature — two traits that we came face to face with, over and over again, during our two weeks in the city. We reached Gangnam Family Hotel well past midnight and I, at least, had no energy left except to, fix myself a quick ready-to-eat meal and snore what-was-left-of-the-night away. A 9:00 a.m. departure sound positively punishing. But after four months of hard work back home at IIMB, we were well trained for tough times!
Prior to the bus ride we were served a wonderful breakfast that had plenty on offer for vegetarians, including fresh fruits, steamed vegetables, potato fries, assorted breads, hot chocolate, yogurt, and coffee. We spent the thirty-minute bus ride to KAIST taking in the sights of the city, which looked like an infrastructure marvel, which we later learnt was called the ‘miracle on the Han river’, Han being the river that flows through Seoul and divides the city into northern and southern halves.
Lectures, fields visits and more
We were welcomed to KAIST by Prof. Betty Chung with a little gift for each one of us. The day consisted of three lectures, the first one from Prof. Chung herself. She talked about the important characteristics of Korean culture and also about South Korea’s meteoric rise from being one of the poorest nations in the world in the ’50s to one of the most developed societies in the world today. I was particularly amazed by the choice of words such as jung and noonchi to communicate important cultural aspects that are integral to South Korea.
The second lecture was by Dilip Sundaram, who was the CFO and Chief Transformation Officer of Mahindra’s acquisition of SsangYong. His session was peppered with incisive questions aimed at us that put us in his shoes to think like a C-level executive in charge of transforming a company. As aspiring business leaders, this session taught us lessons that will remain with us throughout our careers. His emphasis on perfection on execution in a transformation context, and his highlighting of Korea as an execution specialist country really left an impression on us.
The third lecture was by the Indian ambassador to South Korea, Vikram Doraiswamy. We consider ourselves honoured and extremely lucky to be able to listen to, in person, to a person who is not only a distinguished civil servant but also a knowledgeable industry expert. His understanding of how the capabilities of Korean companies can be matched with the needs of the Indian market was impressive to say the least. His central message of creatively managing India’s unique traits to make it attractive for Korean companies to invest in, was the key takeaway.
The following days had lectures by James Rooney, who provided us an outsider’s perspective of not only South Korea but the other two Northeast Asian economies of China and Japan.
The lecture by Prof. Leighanne Yuh, a historian, provided us the backstory for South Korea’s stratospheric economic rise. Her detailing of President Park Chung-hee’s era during the ’60s and the ’70s was particularly insightful.
We went on field visits to the Samsung Innovation Museum, and to the Korea Exchange (KRX) in Busan. We also had two visits that helped us explore the culture of South Korea, and these were Nanta and Kicks. The former is a cooking-based mime show that amazed and stupefied us with its speed, coordination, and skill, while the latter is a taekwondo show by the national team that combines martial arts, storytelling, and technology. After our visit to KRX in Busan, we also found time to visit the beach.
Flights of fantasy
The best was saved for the last. Prior to our departure to South Korea, my class had been divided into groups of seven each, and each group was to work with a Korean company on a project. Two groups were drawn to work with the Indian Embassy of South Korea, and I was in one of those two groups. On the penultimate day of our stay in South Korea, quite unexpectedly and surprisingly, we were granted permission to visit the headquarters of Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) in relation to our project, thanks to the efforts of Parth Sharma – Vice Chairman, Indian Chamber of Commerce in Korea. KAI’s headquarters is situated in Sacheon, which was a four-hour bus ride from Seoul. We were staring at the prospect of travelling eight hours for a two-hour meeting with a 9:00 a.m. departure for the airport next day! But the KAI visit was worth every bit of our time and energy. We interacted with Dr. Choi – Senior Manager & Chief, International Marketing Division, KAI, who was kind enough to explain in detail KAI’s business and the general landscape of South Korea’s dealings with other countries in the defence aviation sector. We were also shown around the assembly line of KAI’s fighter and trainer jets, and helicopters, and we were also given a glimpse of the cockpit of T-50, KAI’s advanced jet trainer.
Memories are made of this
Besides the formal lectures and field visits, our personal adventures and outings contributed a lot to the entire Korean experience. One of my first destinations in Seoul was the Cheonggyecheon stream, which in the aftermath of the Korean War was nothing more than raw sewage, but has now been restored with a walkway along the stream, making it an excellent public space. We also frequented various shopping hubs of the city such as the popular Gangnam Street, the sprawling Lotte Department Store, the crowded bylanes of Myengdong (the street food on offer, especially the deep fried ice-cream, is a foodie’s delight), the underground markets, and the buzzing night market at Dongdaemun (I like the name a lot. Seems worthy of a boss villain in an epic Oriental RPG video game.)
The Changgyeonggung Palace was a pleasant surprise. With its modest furnishings and simple architecture it was unlike any other palace that I have ever seen. The striking feature of this palace, and I suspect the other four palaces in Seoul, is the abundance of open spaces in comparison with courtrooms, royal residences, etc.
Another instance that made my trip memorable was the rain playing spoilsport twice – once during the hike in Bukhansan National Park, and the second time during a trip to Nami Island. In the former instance, we still managed a decent hike that afforded us breathtaking views of gushing streams and tranquil Buddhist temples, and in the latter instance we managed to see Gapyeong, a picturesque little town close to Nami Island. The twenty-minute walk, tumbling up and down Gapyeong’s rolling terrain flanked by tall mountains and under the fading light of the evening sun, was an experience of a lifetime.
I have experienced the sun and rain of the Korean summer and hope to visit this beautiful country in all its glorious colours and meet its wonderful people sometime later during a Korean autumn. Gamsahamnida Korea!

ESCAPADE DIARIES: Korea (Part10) - Nami Island
This was the day when one of my greatest childhood dreams came to life… the day I was able to experience snow!
While our ferry was docking the island, I got the chance to observe the place from afar-- I wasn’t even stepping in Nami yet but I could already felt my heart fluttering of excitement!!! At that very moment, my day has already been made. Everything else that happened the next hours was honestly just a bonus.
Before going further with the details of my winter wonderland experience (mostly via photos haha), first things first, here is how we commute from Seoul to Nami Island. Well, in Seoul, it isn’t a struggle going from one tourist spot to another. In our week-long stay in Seoul, this day was actually the only one that required us to commute via a public bus, and it wasn’t a hassle at all!
Bus Tickets can easily be purchased from the Tourist Information Center outside Gapyeong Train Station. There are two bus lines offering those tickets:
Intra-City Bus for Nami Island | Ticket Price: ~Php 60.00 | Drop Offs: Gapyeong Bus Terminal > Gapyeong Station > Nami Island > Gapyeong Station > Gapyeong Bus Terminal
Gapyeong City Tour Bus | Ticket Price: ~Php 300.00 | Drop Offs: Gapyeong Bus Terminal > Gapyeong Station > Jarasum > Gapyeong Station > Gapyeong Rail Park > Nami Island > Petite France > Cheongpyeong Bus Terminal > The Garden of Morning Calm
From here onward, I will just let the photos below speak for themselves. ♥
Korean BBQ lunch with my Oppa! Hahahaha
Mr. Dak-galbi | ~Php 450.00 per person | 1 Serving of Korean Chicken BBQ (with rice, vegetables, and drinks)
Dak-galbi or spicy stir-fried chicken, is a popular Korean dish made by stir-frying marinated diced chicken in a gochujang-based sauce with sweet potatoes, cabbage, perilla leaves, scallions, tteok, and other ingredients. It is known to have originated in Chuncheon County in Gangwon Province, South Korea, hence, the name Namiseom Chuncheon Dak-galbi. Source: Wikipedia

Aftereffects of the Unification Church's Cheonwon Palace – construction halted. $3 million owed.
auto translation:
▲ Subcontractors of Sunwon Construction demonstrating in front of Cheongshim World Center.
The subcontractors claim that the payment of 3.1 billion won (more than 300 million yen) that they should have received from Sunwon Construction after the completion of the Cheonwon Palace construction is delayed.
Because the Unification Church's company, Sunwon Construction, is under legal supervision, the group is seeking to ask the Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation, which commissioned the Cheonwon Palace construction, to resolve the unpaid debt that it should have received from Sunwon Construction.
Unification Group News boasted of the resumption of activities, saying, "Gapyeong Seorak Dielbon Cooperative Housing Apartment is cruising again with the goal of moving in next July. Although there were temporary trials...key people involved in Sunwon Construction are revealed," and the flames of Sunwon Construction have fallen on the Unification Church less than a month after the announcement.
The subcontractors, seeing that Sunwon Construction has resumed construction on the apartments, are apparently protesting against the client, Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation, in an attempt to receive the unpaid payments for the Cheonwon Palace construction.
This is a problem between Sunwon Construction and the subcontractors, but from the subcontractors' point of view, they say they are holding the client responsible, as the reason they did not receive 3.1 billion won (more than 300 million yen) is due to the Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation's repeated design changes and construction delays.
However, there is no reason for the client, Hyojeong Global Unification Foundation, to make direct payments to the subcontractors. This is because the issue is between Sunwon Construction, which is under legal management, and the subcontractors.
As this is a matter of life and death for the subcontractors, the protests will not end with one go, and the Cheongshim World Center and Cheonjeong Palace are likely to become "demonstration meccas" in the future.
Attention is focused on how Cheonmuwon Vice President Jeong Won-ju and Director Lee Jeong-woo will handle the mass protests by the subcontractors.

21 Best Places To Visit in Seoul, South Korea
One of the most eclectic cities in the world, Seoul is a beautiful mixture of modern and classical. One moment you could be walking past a thousand-year-old building and the next, be admiring the sophisticated design of a contemporary one.
While there’s much to see and do in South Korea beyond Seoul, it’s hard to blame travellers for not venturing past the city. There’s no end to the number of exciting places to visit in Seoul irrespective of the duration of your stay.
Whether you’re visiting Seoul for 72 hours or spending an entire week, here is a list of the top 21 attractions, sights and places to visit in Seoul that will have you falling madly in love with the city!
1. Gwangjang Market – For Local Food
One of the most buzzing places to visit in Seoul would be its markets that literally pop up every corner you turn. As far as real food goes, none compares itself to the atmospheric Gwangjang market, Korea’s oldest remaining daily market.
The compact market hosts more than 5,000 shops and sees more than 50,000 visitors every day!
The market is most famous for shops selling bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) along with sundae (sausage made of pig’s intestines), tteokbokki (rice cake), and jeon (an assortment of snacks). Wash them all down with a soju, sitting in the cramped tables lined along the shops.
This market is a must-see in Seoul — whether you’re a foodie, or not.

2. Hongdae – For Nightlife
Close to the Hongik University, Hongdae is the neighbourhood to indulge in pubs, clubs, indie music, and arts. Featuring a huge university crowd, the entire area is peppered with numerous clubs and pubs where you can break a leg with the incredibly well-dressed youth of Korea.
One of the best party places to visit in Seoul, expect a K-pop performance to break out anytime, a choir may begin singing, or an unknown musician might just announce themselves at anytime.
If a cheap club is what you’re after, head to GOGOS. But if you prefer to be in a curated crowd, Club Vera is a fantastic choice.
To get here, get off at Hongik University Station, Exit 9
3. Cheonggyecheon Stream – For a Leisurely Walk
Once an unknown waterway in downtown Seoul, the stream was reconstructed in 2005 into a beautiful stream buzzing with life. Running close to 11 km through the city, a long walk in the evening along its urban banks brings the best of Seoul to you.
The waterfront areas witness a lot of cultural performances and art installations regularly to keep one entertained. The evening lighting, the mini waterfalls, the twenty plus bridges that come through its course, all add to the charm of this urban wonder which many other cities across the world are looking to replicate.

5. Insadong – For Teahouses
There’s no way this wouldn’t be on the list of places to visit in Seoul. Darye, the Korean tea ceremony, is an etiquette of having tea that has been practiced in Korea for over a thousand years.
In the neighbourhood of Insadong, travellers can take part in the ceremony and enjoy a well-brewed cup of tea at traditional teahouses.
Begin with Jidaebang tea house where the lotus tea will set you up for a perfect evening.
Head to Dawon after, which is located in the compound of the Museum of fine art in a garden setting. This is the ideal place to unwind while sipping on their signature jujube tea, served with traditional rice cakes making for a beautiful combination of flavors.
Those fluffy rice cakes and soothing jujube tea is a hit. Seriously!
6. Tosokchon – For The Best Chicken Soup
Samgyetang (chicken soup) is a summer dish in Korea consisting of a possum (baby chicken) stuffed with rice, jujube, garlic, and ginseng (a medicinal root used in Korea).
While the idea of a possum stuffed with ingredients might not seem appetizing, it is among Korea’s most celebrated and delicious dishes that is a must-have while in Seoul.
Tosokchon is an institution for samgyetang that’s incredibly tourist-friendly and serving authentic chicken soup since the 1950s. It’s also located close to Gyeongbokgung palace making it an ideal lunch spot after a visit to the palace.
7. Itaewon – For Korean Barbecue
Going out for a classic barbecue meal is one of the better ways to socialize in Seoul.
Locally called galbi, you sit around a table with a personal grill and barbecue a wide variety of proteins and vegetables, which is then devoured with a host of sides and washed down with beers.
Itaewon is Seoul’s premier BBQ destination along with a large choice of Arabian restaurants to select from.
Maple Tree House is incredibly popular among travellers, thanks to the English-speaking staff and menu, while Two Plus Itaewon is another top choice, especially among beef lovers.
For foodies, this is one of the top places to visit in Seoul.
The yummiest of all the places to visit in Seoul has to be a Korean barbecue restaurant
8. Lotte Mart – For a Special Supermarket Experience
Think of any Korean product/grocery item you’ve ever heard of, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll find it at the Lotte Mart stores across Seoul.
Processed goods, household items, cosmetics, ice creams, electronics, children’s products, fashion accessories, clothes, and much more is available for purchase.
Supermarkets are often the best place to understand the lifestyle of the locals and trust us, Lotte is one of the most interesting places to visit in Seoul.
The mart at Seoul station is extremely foreign-friendly with a few English-speaking store assistants to help you get along the aisles.
9. Han River – For an Unforgettable Bike Ride
There are few better ways to burn off the calories from the culinary expeditions in Seoul than a bicycle ride around the Han river.
Rent a bicycle from the Yeouido Hangang park and do a 15 km loop passing the Mapo bridge, Jeoldusan Martyrs shrine, and the beautiful Seonyudo park.
The park also has a resting spot to enjoy a cup of coffee while absorbing the river views. Return towards Yeouido, stopping by to admire views of the National Assembly and the marina.
After the bike trip, you could also take a river cruise during sunset. After all that food you’ve been enjoying, this is one of the most apt places to visit in Seoul.
10. Mapo-Gu – For Its Quirky Cafes (the most unusual places to visit in Seoul!)
Korea’s innovations are not limited to its cosmetic or technology but are also visible in its quirky and cool cafes.
If the same leafy themed cappuccinos have begun to bore you, Seoul is the place to embrace thematic cafes that range from poop and cats, to dogs and raccoons.
While these cafes are lined all over town from Gangnam to Yongsan-gu, a large number of cafes are situated in the Mapo-gu district. Check out the “poop cafe” here – it’s one of the weirdest places in Korea!
The quirky Poop Cafe serves its pasta in a miniature toilet.
11. The Subway – For Its Technology Cheap Shopping
The transport system in Seoul is worth admiring, especially the subway system. Connecting every remote corner of the city and large areas in the outskirts, it’s among the world’s most advanced and efficient metro systems.
But, the reason why it’s among the list of places to visit in Seoul is due to the numerous shops in the subway stations. This is the top place to shop for those on a budget.
From winter wear and fashion accessories to freshly baked bread, you can find just about anything at the station stalls. Feel free to bargain your heart out!

12. Nami Island – For the Love of Winter Sonata
Whether you are a fan of Winter Sonata or not, Nami Island is one of the best places to visit in Seoul, especially in the winter months.
Although this nature-filled place isn’t the best hiking in South Korea, and is thronged by tourists, it’s quite a cultural experience to watch the local travellers enjoy their weekends.
During late winter, the lake at Nami freezes, making for a gorgeous view across the island. For those travelling with children, Nami island is highly recommended for its fun rides, zip wire, and large open spaces.
When here, do not forget to eat Hotteok (sweet pancake). The queue is worth the deliciousness.
Besides, if you love the book ‘The Little Prince’ as we do, you may also enjoy visiting Petite France, a village modelled after the book.
Getting There: Take the metro to Yongsan station and catch the ITX train to Gapyeong from where you could take the shuttle bus to the ferry wharf and then ferry across. Or, if you’d prefer to have a pick-up and everything arranged for you, click here to learn about a Nami Island tour.
13. A Jimjilbang – For a Korean Style Spa Experience
Korean spa is not your ordinary hour-long relaxation massage. It’s a getaway from life!
In a typical Korean Jimjilbang, you would be scrubbed, soaked in hot water, and most importantly be completely naked and surrounded by locals who would be doing just the same.
Depending on the Jimjilbang you go to, there are facilities like hot water pools, sauna, massage, and even film rooms to sit back and relax.
At some of the Jimjilbangs, you can stay overnight and save the night’s tariff at a hotel. Relaxation and accommodation, both in one go. This is one of the places in Seoul you could spend a while.
Siloam and Dragon Hill Spa are two of the famous ones. You can ask your host or hotel to suggest one that may be local to the area you stay in.
14. Noryangjin Fish Market – For a Local Market Experience
Name a sea creature and there’s a very high chance that you will find it in the vibrant fish market of Noryangjin. It’s where all the restaurants in Seoul source their fish from. I must warn you though that if you prefer to eat your food without seeing it being chopped and butchered, the market may not be for you.
The fast pace negotiations, a variety of seafood, and the chitter-chatter filling the market is worth the experience, this is one of the most local places to visit in Seoul. Get here early morning to watch locals trade, though an evening tour isn’t too bad either.
Transactions at the vibrant Noryangjin Fish Market
15. Ihwa Mural Village – For Its Art
Koreans love murals – you’ll find them in quite a few places around the country. In the Ihwa Mural Village, there’s an entire neighbourhood painted with trendy art and colorful walls.
Set up on a hillside, the Ihwa Mural Village was an attempt to decorate and restore the community neighbourhood. However, there are contradictory views to the restoration and not all the residents appreciate the attempt, and it’s important to keep this in mind as you walk through the village.
Wear comfortable shoes and attire and carry enough drinking water – the walk around the village is almost a mini hike.
16. Gyeongbokgung Palace – For a History Lesson on Joseon Dynasty
If you were to pick just one of the places to visit in Seoul, make it this one. There’s no better way to start your South Korean journey than a slow walk in and around the Gyeongbokgung Palace.
The largest of the five palaces in the city, the North Palace (Gyeongbokgung Palace) is a great introduction to the history of the Joseon dynasty.
Arrive at the palace early in the morning (starting time is 9 AM) to avoid the crowds. For just 3,000 won ($2.70) per person, you can enjoy the magnificent palace and its large open grounds.
For photography lovers, the palace with a view of the Bukhansan mountains in the backdrop makes for a great frame. This is one of the most popular attractions in Seoul, for good reason.
The 623 years old Gyeongbokgung Palace.
17. Bukhansan – For The Love Of Hiking
Seoul is surrounded on all sides by mountains and peaks that are perfect for hiking. A popular weekend activity among the youth of the city is to hike up the Bukhansan mountains, which holds the dubious record for most hikers per square foot.
Beginning at the Bukhansanseong Fortress, the trail to the highest peak of Baegundae includes walking along fortress walls, Buddha statues, and local temples.
The view from the top is stunning and well worth the 5-hour climb. We recommend doing the hike early in the morning on a weekday, to avoid the crowds. Hiking is one of the top things to do, and if you’re wondering where to go in Seoul to be out in nature, this is a good bet.
Getting There: Gupabal Station, Exit 1 -> Bus 704 to Fortress
18. NANTA Theater – For a Unique Stage Show
The ‘Nanta Cooking’ show that originally premiered in 1997 follows the story of three cooks working hard to cook a lavish wedding banquet on a strict timeline.
The musical that takes place across the two theatres in Hongdae and Myeongdong is entirely non-verbal with the story told through magic tricks, acrobatics, comedy, and audience involvement.
Strung together through the unifying element of samulnori music (music created using objects), it’s an incredible performance.
This is a top Seoul tourist attraction, although, there will be some locals there as well. There are three shows a day in both the theatres and costs around $35 a ticket. Click here to book your tickets and enjoy the show.
19. Jogyesa Temple – For an Introduction to Korean Buddhism
South Korea has a strong Buddhist influence and the gorgeous Jogyesa temple is a testament to it. Built in 1395, Jogyesa temple is the centre of Korean Buddhism (Jogye order). The temple is peaceful in the mornings but if you would like to see it lit up, evenings are the best time to visit.
It’s best to read about the temple’s history in advance and understand its significance to make the most of this experience.
To explore the Korean Buddhist principles in depth, choose the temple stay program offered for free at the temple itself. Vegetarian Buddhist meals, teachings, and an overall introduction to Jogye make the stay experience absolutely unique.
The center of Korean Buddhism, Jogyesa Temple, is truly peaceful.
20. Bukchon Hanok Village – For a Traditional Day Out
Perched on a small hill in the heart of Seoul, the traditional Bukchon village is like traveling back in time. Hanoks, traditional Korean houses as old as 600 years line the alleyways that meander through the walls of Changgyeonggung palace.
For those not traveling to Jeonju, staying in the minimalistic Hanok in Seoul is an equally fascinating experience.
Wear a hanbok and amble around the streets admiring beautiful street art, clicking Insta-worthy pictures, digging into local food, and shopping for the souvenirs to carry back with you.
21. Chicken In The Kitchen – For…Chicken!
It’s Seoul, so the list must end with food, right?! And what better than the dish no one does better, not even the Colonel – Chicken.
Koreans love their chicken so much that they have a nickname for having fried chicken with beer called ‘chi-maek’ which just simply means having chicken with beer along with your friends. This is some of the best Korean food!
Although there are numerous joints all across town, Chicken in The Kitchen is one which is known for its impeccable hygienic practices and well suited for a romantic evening (even though you’ll be dipping your hands into the juicy sauces). Of all the places to visit in Seoul, this one has to be our favourite.
The best pair of all -Chimaek!
Ready For The Amazing Places To Visit in Seoul?!

Pengalaman Jalan-Jalan Abidin Ke Korea Selatan (daerah Seoul)
originally posted here
Warning long post ahead
Harga one way 15.000 won.
Gratis masuknya. Kalau ditanya apakah dingin, ketika kami ke sana suhu sekitar 7 derajat C, sudah mulai dingin. Sekitar jam 16.30 kami kembalikan hanboknya.
Kami dibawa menonton Bibap Show. Ini ceritanya seperti Master Chef tapi komedi gitu. Show mulai dari jam 8 malam hingga 22.10.
6 Desember 2017 (Rabu)
Makan di The Halal Guys (posted here).
7 Desember 2017 (Kamis)
Begitu keluar stasiun memang cukup banyak makanan halal, seperti Mr Kebab, Kervan, dll.
10 Desember 2017 (Minggu)
Sebelumnya saya meletakkan koper saya di Lotte City Hotel Myeongdong, so sweet dah petugasnya padahal saya udah check out haha. Kata roommate saya semalam turun salju. Lupa nama restonya apa. Saya pesan soft tofu and seafood stew. Ga tau sih halal apa ga karena meski namanya seafood mungkin tetap pakai mirin/alkohol. Tapi saya lapar huhu.
Ternyata koper 20 inch kurang ya bajunya sih muat tapi saya ga memperhitungkan boots winter yg saya beli bakal makan tempat bgt.

Unification Church President Hak Ja Han issues emergency directive, “Submit resignation letters en masse!”
Employees collectively submit resignation letters amid serious financial crisis
Amen News, Korea September 30, 2024 (Monday) 23:16:06
Automatic translation:
[ Editorial Department] It appears that the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, commonly known as the “Unification Church,” is facing a serious financial crisis. According to some media outlets in the religious community, on September 24, Unification Church President Hak Ja Han issued an unbelievable emergency directive to her closest associates, Mr. Jeong and Mr. Lee.
“Submit resignation letters en masse by September 30!”
Excluding corporate employees, she instructed all employees of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, its related organizations, such as the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), and the National Coalition for the Unification of South and North Korea, to submit resignation letters en masse by September 30. Furthermore, it is said that the resignation forms were all the same, except for the names of the organizations. The employees who received the sudden order simply signed and submitted the resignation letter handed down from above without even knowing the English translation, and it is said that the reason for the resignation was already unilaterally stated on the form as ‘personal reasons.’
The background of the order, which was given in the middle of the night, seems to be due to serious financial pressure. In July 2022, as negative public opinion about the Unification Church spread greatly in Japan due to the shooting death of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe, the status of the Unification Church also fell significantly. In particular, after his death, it became difficult to remit donations from Japan, which had been covering a significant portion of the Unification Church’s finances, and now it is leading to a depletion of funds.
The repercussions seem to be greater than expected. According to a Unification Church official, the Family Federation and affiliated organizations have been working with support funds from the World Headquarters. However, they are having difficulty maintaining even the funds they had on their own, and when the World Headquarters’ funds ran out, they eventually ordered a restructuring of personnel and a blanket resignation letter.
Moreover, the Unification Church is in the middle of a large-scale construction project. It is constructing the ‘Cheonwon Complex’ in the Seorak-myeon area of Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. Among the buildings in the complex, which are represented by Cheonjeonggung and Cheonwongung, Cheonjeonggung has been completed for several years, but Cheonwongung is currently under construction. Cheonjeonggung is 4 floors underground and 3 floors above ground, and has a total floor area of 24,700 pyeong on a site of 37,922 pyeong. The purpose of Cheonwongung is to ‘culturally communicate with the general public through philosophical activities for world peace.’ However, on the Unification Church website, it is written as “a house where we live with our Heavenly Parents.”
No one can go against the will of President Hak Ja Han, who plans to complete the construction of Cheonwon Palace by the end of April next year and hold an entrance ceremony, so even under severe financial pressure, they are pouring everything into it and focusing on it, and there is speculation that this is why the 'mass resignation' order was given. Furthermore, there is an outlook that additional unpredictable construction costs will have to be invested in the future to complete Cheonwon Palace.
Due to financial pressure, the Unification Church has sold off real estate assets and borrowed over 200 billion won from external financial institutions. If real estate continues to be put up for sale at low prices in the future, there is concern that even companies that are maintaining their current status will see their credit value decline, so it is currently not easy to even sell real estate. Furthermore, the closest associates of President Hak Ja Han, former and current key leaders Jeong ○○ and Yoon ○○, are under police investigation for suspicions of tax evasion and embezzlement. It is truly a difficult situation.
Even during the lifetime of the founder, Sun Myung Moon, there was a lot of noise due to various problems, including the problems of his children. After his death, the Unification Church split into the side of his wife Hak Ja Han and the side of his [eldest] son [Hyun Jin Preston Moon and also the Sanctuary Church/Rod of Iron faction led by Hyung Jin Sean Moon and his brother Kook Jin Justin Moon]. Also amid the struggle for power and property, the Unification Church under Hak Ja Han now faces serious financial pressure.
Will the employees and believers who were driven out onto the streets by the sudden order to submit a ‘resignation letter’ by president Hak Ja Han, who was blinded by the construction of a huge temple(?) for her own deification, still believe in her as the ‘true mother’?
I want to know what will be the future of the Unification Church.

Suzuki Eito: “Oh My God” Emergency Bulletin【The UC in the midst of a cataclysmic earthquake】
▲ Suzuki Eito (seen here at Hak Ja Han’s Cheongpyeong shopping mall) is a journalist and the author of the book, “Tracking 3000 Days of the Liberal Democratic Party’s Contamination by the Unification Church” (2022 – Shogakukan) See below for the book cover and a link to further information.

President Hak Ja Han of the Unification Church finished her “Her 80th Birthday Anniversary Ceremony”, “Mass Wedding”, and “Dedication Ceremony for Cheonwon Palace” on May 7th.
On May 9, Hak Ja Han dismissed Yun Young-ho, the head of the World Mission Headquarters, who was the second in command in the sect.
Yun Young-ho. General Manager of [FFWPU] World Headquarters
The Unification Church is going through an earthquake.
Has Yun Young-ho been dismissed for “embezzlement of public funds” in the same way Kim Hyo-nam [ = Daemo-nim] was dismissed? “Public money” means money taken from victims in Japan.
There is information that Yun Young-ho invested billions in the Mekong River project with Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia.
Jeong Won-ju 鄭元周, head of the Presidential Secretariat, who is hostile to Yun Young-ho, and Choi, the [second] wife of Hyo-jin Moon [who died in 2008], the eldest son of Sun Myung Moon and Hak ja Han, reported to Hak-ja Han about Yun's embezzlement of public funds.
To develop Japan, Hak Ja Han appointed Song Yong-cheon 宋龍天, former president of the Japan General Assembly, as the world president.
Yang Chang-shik 梁昌植 was appointed UPF World President. Hak Ja Han is the UPF president.
Hak Ja Han strengthened her presidential secretary office. The First Secretariat manages the Family Federation (Unification Church) and the Universal Peace Federation, and the head of the secretariat is Moon Yeon-Ah 文妍娥. The head of the second secretary office is Jeong Won-ju. (Last summer, Hak Ja Han took Jeong Won-ju to a casino in Las Vegas to gamble, and the Weekly Bunshun magazine reported that she spends her followers' donations at casinos?)
Hak Ja Han: “There is no mission headquarters anymore. We need to merge with the Family Federation and work together with the training center to focus on returning to Gapyeong. [Gapyeong is the Cheongpyeong area.]
Hak Ja Han: Have we fulfilled our responsibilities? Five district presidents! Did the number of members increase? Achievements are important. How can we return to the nation in four years? But a couple of states should be able to come back.”
Hak Ja Han: “All World Mission Branches must become Family Federations.” “Buddha must become a child before True Parents. “In order to restore 8 billion people, the UPF must create an environment in which the Family Federation will be the center of the celebration.”
Is Hak Ja Han denying Sun Myung Moon's unification principle? After she took a luxury cruise on Cheongpyeong Lake, she spoke in front of 70 of her executives on May 18.
Hak Ja Han denied the principle of creation. She denied and dismantled the Unification Principle of Sun Myung Moon, and built a new doctrine centered on the female Messiah, the “only begotten daughter” Han Hak Ja.
Hak Ja Han: “The source of life is born through Mother. Men are 0.001%, mothers are 99.999%, and Heavenly Parent is the same. In the Divine Principle, there is a neutralizing [or equalizing] of the dual nature. This is not real. We need to correct that.”
In the Magnolia Group, which was run by the Yun Young-ho family, the Christina Han brand has been revived; it handles expensive precious metals that Japanese members have been forced to buy. The Magnolia Group building in Cheongpyeong, South Korea was also reported on. Tuxedos and wedding dresses priced from 500,000 to 1,000,000 yen were also confirmed during coverage of the May 7th mass wedding.

Benchmarking the Unification Church and Shincheonji of Lee Man-hee
Shincheonji Church of Jesus the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony.
Shincheonji = new heaven and earth. They are organized into 12 tribes.
Front organizations: International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), Zion Christian Center, Parachristo
computer translation, there will be inaccuracies:
One Shincheonji former member was instructed to benchmark the Unification Church. Lee Man-hee imitates doctrines and activities of the Unification Church.
Lee Man-hee’s connections with the Unification Church
Lee Man-hee’s relationship with the Unification Church continues to be captured. On November 15, 2012, Lee and his wife, Kim Nam-hee, bought land from Hyundai-Kia, Hyundai, Gyeonggi-do, Gyeonggi Province for 3.15 billion won. A three-story training center with a marina was built at the location.
Lee attended a performance commemorating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Little Angels arts group at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts on September 7th. Lee and Kim also had a commemorative photo taken with Mr. Pak Bo Hi. The Chun Ji Daily and the Unification Church World Daily News published favorable articles.

▲ Mr Lee Man-hee and Kim Nam-hee, photographed with Mr Pak Bo-hi (second from the left) attending a Unification Church Little Angels event. Mrs Pak is standing next to Mr Lee.
Peace movement copied
Lee Man-hee claims to be a “lion of peace” and has traveled all over the world. In September and December 2014, Mr Lee held conferences on religions in Seoul and in Los Angeles in the United States. [Summit of the World Alliance of Religions for Peace (WARP) Seoul, Sept. 17-19, 2014] He put forward fanciful claims that he would unite the world’s religions. Lee reasons that ‘the conflicts between religions break peace.’ At the Los Angeles event Lee said that he is the person who is directly connected with God and that God’s will is to eliminate conflicts caused by religion.
Obviously, you will have often heard the word ‘peace’ used in the Unification Church. It was a key factor in determining the Unification Church. Sun Myung Moon presented himself as a peace activist. Moon said in his autobiography, As a Peace Loving Global Citizen, “Peace will never come on this earth without breaking down the barriers between religions.” “For thousands of years different religions have claimed to be the right ones, building high walls. God’s will is for peace.”
▲ Sun Myung Moon, and his wife (above), Lee Man-hee and Kim Nam-hee (below)
The resemblance is too similar. In the end, Lee is merely following the older successful religious movement under the banner of “peace.” Retirees, who were in the planning department for Shincheonji activities and events, confirmed this.
Shintan was written by the Unification Church
Most of the doctrines of Korean pseudo-religions are similar. It is because almost all the leaders did not receive proper theological education. They preach pseudo-religion. Shincheonji also borrowed doctrines from the Olive Tree movement of Park Tae-seon (b. 1915) and The Tent Temple—or the Temple of the Tabernacle—which was founded by Yoo Jae-yul (b. 1949).
But Shincheonji was particularly influenced by the Unification Church. Kim Kun-nam, one of the two authors of Shintan, which can be called the first doctrine of Shincheonji, is from the Unification Church. Kim also served as a lecturer in the Unification Church. It is no exaggeration to say that Shincheonji doctrine developed on the basis of what Kim made.
Shincheonji’s first teaching Shintan
The process by which Lee Man-hee is setting up a succession plan for Kim Nam-hee is also similar to the Unification Church. The UC refers to Dr. Hak Ja Han as True Mother and has deified her. After the death of Moon, the deification of Han was further strengthened. At present, in the Unification Church, Hak Ja Han is the holy and honorable god of the day for the first time in history. It was Moon, who called himself True Father, who made Han like this. Moon has said that Han is the second great leader of the Unification Church.
Kim Nam-hee has the overwhelming support of Lee Man-hee and became the mother of the people through a spiritual substitute at the head of a seminary. In the Gapyeong Shincheonji Training Center, … are expressed as Kim. This is a doctrinal footstep that makes Lee’s successor, Kim Nam-hee, become the master of Shincheonji. What remains is the deification of Kim. Just as the deification of Moon has been further strengthened, it is important to pay attention to where Kim can go.
The Unification Church became a huge organization by using ‘peace’. Although there has been friction between the internal forces after Moon’s death, it is steadily establishing succession relative to other pseudo religions. Was it enough of a role model for Lee Man-hee? Shincheonji has copied the Unification Church in doctrine and activity. How far can Shincheonji catch up with the Unification Church (FFWPU)?
