TK’s second winter in Antarctica starts the same as the first—short days, cold nights, and a never-ending work load. Except when Carlos returns part way through the season after a sudden departure last year, TK has to learn to cope with being in the most remote place on Earth with the man he used to warm up with nearly every night. An expedition for emergency maintenance throws them together again, but when they become part of the emergency, they’re forced to face their pasts.

As they tear through the loft, Carlos gets flashbacks to when he had to do the same for a lost lizard. Twice. Except this time it’s not a reptile, but a very expensive engagement ring that doesn’t even belong to them. They flip cushions and roll rugs and dig through the dishes filled with pretzels or chocolate covered almonds, but even after their home looks like a tornado ripped through it, they’re still empty handed.

TK slumps down on the living room floor after a last ditch effort to look under the couch, staring up at Carlos with wide, horrified eyes. “The ring is gone,” he mutters, and all Carlos can do is swallow past his dry throat and nod.

"BATTLESHIP TEXAS UPDATE

The ship is currently moored at Pier D in Gulf Copper Shipyard where it will continue to undergo repairs and preparations to become a museum ship once again.

PINE DECK REPAIRS: Workers are currently laying the pine deck on the ship's bow. Below is a breakdown of how this is done. Yes, Battleship Texas had a deck made up of mostly pine during the ship's service career.

The underlying steel deck has been repaired and made watertight with all existing studs removed and ground flush. Once welding has concluded in each area, the steel is properly coated.

4"x4" treated southern yellow pine deck planks are shaped and fitted to the deck then coated to protect against moisture. A Dolphinite Bedding Compound is applied to both the steel deck and bottom of the board prior to final installation. Boards are secured by studs which are welded to the steel deck during installation.

Plank and margin board seams are caulked using on strand of cotton caulking, three strands of oakum, and sealed with a marine sealant.

MAIN MAST: The ship's main mast has been primed and painted in Navy Blue 5-N. The radar top mast, along with its SG and SK radar antennas, has been placed back atop the ship's main mast! We plan to make a separate post with a more in-depth explanation of all the work that was done.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT'S NEXT? - Battleship Texas will remain at Gulf Copper Shipyard while the ship's new home in Galveston, Texas, is prepared. Additional steel work, replacement of the ship's deck, further restoration, and painting will be done during this time.

TOURING? - The Battleship Texas Foundation will be offering touring options while the ship is in the shipyard. Participants will be able to view ongoing work and restoration or learn all about how the ship operated during its service career. Tours are expected to begin in late 2024.

REOPENING? - There is a lot to be done before the ship is ready for touring at its new home in Galveston, Texas. Reopening is projected to happen in the later half of 2025.

MISSING GUNS? - The ship's anti-aircraft guns are currently undergoing restoration. The guns and gun directors will be replaced once their restoration is complete.

“Babe, we chose Galveston so we didn’t have to make plans. We chose the beach to be lazy. I love being lazy with you anywhere, here, or at home, or anywhere else,” Carlos says, leaning forward to kiss TK’s forehead.

“You hate being lazy,” TK scowls.

“That’s not true,” Carlos says back. “You find me in bed or on the couch reading all the time, don’t you?”

TK twists his lips and gives a small nod.

“And don’t I always cuddle with you while we binge something?”

“I suppose,” TK frowns.

“Doesn’t that sound like I enjoy being lazy?”

TK huffs. Carlos smiles and wraps an arm around him, bringing him back against his chest.

“I love being lazy with you, babe, and if that’s all we do for the rest of our vacation, then I will say it was a vacation well-spent. But I do think we can find something to do and still enjoy our time here, preferably out of the sun.” Carlos’s hand cards through TK’s hair.

“Alright,” TK agrees, sighing as he wraps an arm around Carlos’s waist and nuzzles against him. “Maybe we can go out to dinner this evening. That sounds nice.”

“Dinner and maybe walking around the Strand?” Carlos asks him.

That gets TK to grin up at him, the mischievous glint finally returning to his eyes. “You know I love the Strand.”

“I also know you won’t behave,” Carlos scowls.

Gentle love prompts #41. Not letting them go when hugging

Hol Horse/reader (gender neutral reader)

You’re on Texas’s Galveston Island with Hol for a weekend getaway. He’s been showing you around the places he remembers fondly from his past visits: a bar near your hotel, a chocolate shop on the Strand, and his favorite fishing spot. Of course, you’ve spent some time on the beach, too. Now he’s driven you all the way to the east end of the island, past the bridge you’d driven over when you’d arrived.

“Here we are.” He says, pulling into a ferry loading lane.

“Where does the ferry go?” You ask, watching the cars ahead of you pull onto the ferry as you inch forward.

“Port Bolivar. Not much to see there. They’ve got a retired lighthouse and an old fort, but it’s more of a gateway to the rest of the peninsula.”

“Then why are we going there?”

“Just to ride the ferry. We’ll have to turn around and take the next one back too, unless you wanna see the park at the fort.” He says as your turn to board comes, and you pass over the loading ramp with a bump. “It’s nice, it’s free, and sometimes you can see dolphins.”

He pulls up until the reflective-vested workers gesture for him to stop. He turns the car off and pulls the parking brake, following the instructions on the signs scattered around the deck. Then he unbuckles his seat belt.

“Come on, we’re gettin’ out.” He hops out and you follow him, slipping between cars to the walkway near the side of the boat.

“We’re goin’ up to the front, you can see better there.”

“Isn’t the front on a boat called the prow or something?”

“Honey, I’m a cowboy, not a sailor.” He laughs as you come to stand near the chain keeping passengers away from the very front of the boat, which lowers into the loading and unloading ramp. There’s a good view from here, and the sea breeze on your face is nice.

There’s a small jolt as the ferry’s engines start up and it begins to pull away from the dock. You sway into Hol with the motion, looping your arm around his waist in a side hug and not letting go of him.

“It’s not gonna be that rough, you don’t need to hold on to me.” He says, and you smile at him with a wink.

“Maybe I want to.”

“No complaints here.” He grins and throws an arm across your shoulders. The stronger breeze of the boat’s forward motion and the spray from the sea splashing at the side near you are cooling. At the back of the boat, people are throwing scraps of food to noisy gulls. You watch pelicans floating on the water pass by, scanning for the dolphins Hol had said you might see.

The trip isn’t very long, maybe twenty minutes, so it doesn’t take long before you can see the other dock. Hol gives you a squeeze and lets you go.

“Let’s get back to the car. Gotta be ready to get off.”

You follow him back as the engines audibly slow down on approach. You buckle up again, and soon the front ramp has been lowered and the first cars are being waved off. When it’s your turn, Hol has to drive a little ways down the road to find a place to turn around. And then you’re back in the loading line to do it again.

You repeat the whole process from before, standing at the front of the boat again once you’re underway. You keep an eye out again for dolphins. You watch a bird dive and come up with a fish in its beak, and the wind picks up enough that Hol has to tie the strings of his hat in case it blows off his head, but you don’t see any dolphins. Not until-

“Over there.” Hol pulls you close to point at something a ways away from the boat. You look closely, and there they are: the dorsal fins and curved backs of dolphins jumping and playing at the surface. It looks like there are four or five of them, but it’s hard to count when you can’t see them all at one time.

You watch them until you can’t find them again. Maybe they’ve moved on, or maybe the boat has left them behind. Either way, the return trip comes to and end, and you’re soon back in the car driving away from the dock in the direction of your hotel.

“That was pretty cool.” You decide, watching the seawall pass by your window. “Thanks for showing me.”

“Glad you liked it. Tomorrow we can try some of the museums around town. I’ve never been, myself.”

“Not much of a museum-goer in your youth?” You tease, and he shakes his head.

“I’m hardly a museum-goer now, but I think you’ll like ‘em.”

It’s sweet that he’s planned activities just for you. You’re looking forward to it.

🏁🏎️ | Wir haben in Prolog 2 einen wunderbaren Einblick in die Winterpause der Fahrer bekommen ;3 daher meine Frage: wie würde so ein Prolog bei deinem OC aussehen? Wie sieht ein typischer Tag in der Winterpause aus? Wird fleißig trainiert oder sich mal entspannt?(open your rice :"D - 31. Oktober 2024)

Bodhi würde bei der ersten Gelegenheit in den Flieger nach Houston steigen, dort seinem Bruder um den Hals fallen und dann mit ihm auf direktem Wege nach Galveston, aka nach Hause fahren. Da wird erstmal alle die verpasste Zeit mit Brüderchen und Schwägerin nachgeholt, die halbe Nacht gequatscht und was Gutes zusammen gekocht. Qualität Time ist die Love Language der Drei, also wäre Bodhi wirklich einfach nur happy wieder bei ihnen zu sein 🥹

Die Pause allgemein würde er also am texanischen Gold von Mexiko verbringen, so viel surfen wie nur geht und endlich wieder tun und lassen, was er so will. Richtiges Training betreibt er dabei jetzt nicht, aber trotzdem füllt er seine Tage mit Sport, Sport, Sport und seiner Familie. In der nächsten Winterpause 24/25 ist seine Schwägerin Ryan auch nicht mehr schwanger, also würde es ab für sie die Boulder Halle gehen! (Papa Malcolm kann ja auch mal alleine mit dem Baby sein 😋).

Ein Besuch in Dallas wäre natürlich auch dabei; ein bisschen Zeit mit Mom und Dad verbringen und sich verwöhnen lassen, das alten NASCAR Team besuchen und zu 100% im Februar sich das Daytona 500 aus nächster Nähe ansehen! An der Oval-Bahn würde er auch seine besten Freunde besuchen und anfeuern, wenn sie sich nicht schon vorher getroffen haben.

Bodhi würde im Allgemeinen einfach ganz viel Zeit mit seinem Lieben daheim verbringen und Kraft und Ruhe bei ihnen tanken.

Ein durchschnittlicher Tage würde er echt früh am Strand verbringen, mit einer Surf-Session oder einer Runde Jogging. Dann wird entspannt gefrühstückt und der Tage mit Malcolm und Ryan geplant und verbracht. Vielleicht unternehmen sie war, vielleicht machen sie sich einen ruhigen Tag – egal was Hauptsache sie sind zusammen 🥰
