Chthonic Descent (#4 in my Orpheus and Eurydice series)
The Roman poet Virgil, in his poem “Georgics”, gives a lush description of Orpheus descent into Hades;
“…entering the grove gloomy with black horror, he approached the Manes (dead spirits), and the tremendous king, and the hearts that know not how to relent at human prayers. But the thin shades being stirred up by his song from the lowest mansions of Erebus moved along, and the Ghosts deprived of light… mothers and husbands, and the departed bodies of magnanimous heroes, boys and unmarried girls, and youths laid on funeral pyres before the faces of their parents, whom the black mud and squalid reeds of Cocytus, and the lake hateful with stagnant water encloses around, and styx nine times interfused restrains.”  (-translation from the Latin by John Martyn.)
         The word Chthonic in my title is an adjective describing something belonging to the underworld. This would be an apt time to discuss the structure and details of the ancient Greek underworld; the realm of Hades. Our oldest literary source in Homer’s “Odyssey” (700 B.C.) portrays the realm as dark, gloomy, and frightening. A place where all souls go, and lacking skin and bone; have no physical form. The shades (spirits) wander mindless, and without memory.
         In Virgil’s “Aeneid” (25 B.C.) we get a much more detailed account of the geography. Our hero Aeneas pays the boatman Charon to ferry him across the river styx, and after passing the three headed guard-hound Cerberus, they eventually come to a crossroad leading to two important realms; Tartarus (an invincible fortress guarded by one of the Furies, where sinners are punished) and Elysium (a sunny paradise where pure souls pursue leisure activities).
As always thanks for looking and reading. Please share this post and I'll toss charon a coin for you. Xoxo

Ok, we got the designs for Clara and Odette now.
Clara has more of a circular design, while Odette takes after her mama in more pointy one. They both got dark bellies and the fluff on their tail and wings is actually baby feathers. When they were born, they only got the fluff, but now it's slowly turning to real feathers. It comes in waves, when they lose one row of fluff, they get a row of full feathers. Clara is a bit ahead in that department. I made Clara kind of a silly dragon, and Odette a more curious, but cautious one.
Someone mentioned Vaggie getting adopted when abondened by dragon hunters.... So we got a kid Vaggie as well on the sleeep pile. Don't know if I will officially put her in my au yet. But I will see.
Yes. Carmilla is larger. Zestial is longer. She is the boss.
Anyways, enjoy peeps!

I literally just found out about your Northern Night Fury species and I love them. And now I’m wondering if they’d be friends with my Ice Fury species- also an Arctic Fury subspecies that I designed after polar bears and leopard seals (the second pic is my Light Fury replacement and Toothless’ mate, her name is Subzero. The first pic is her parents)

Oh cute designs!!! I always like to see other seal inspired Furies. 💚
And I definitely think they would be friends! I imagine most Northern Night Furies are usually very friendly, especially towards other Furies. :)

durja's new look Is Fire! Hey One questione: you said that her species' upper lip is more like a beak. how does she kiss people? Is difficult for her to eat since the beak doesnt stretch like mouth muscles would?
Thank you! ^-^ and thanks for your curiosity, I’ve got some info here!
Tumblr media
It’s more like a thick keratin covering that grows over an existing upper lip, so they still got all the facial muscles underneath, with a few changes ofc, mostly with talking in ‘common tongue’ as you can probably imagine. Their mouth expressions are done more with the corners of their mouth or clicking. They can file their beak down, paint it, etc. Durja’s beak is more of a grey but she’ll color it black (She used to do this with permanent markers but the smell would make her nauseous).
It’s just an all around good tool. Durja will usually refuse to use scissors or cutlery knives.
Instead of traditional kissing, Furies are known to nuzzle or groom their partners. This doesn’t stop Sylvaine from smooching ofc.
