I swear, the hardest part of designing sea-folk for me is deciding tail orientation.

Tbh I’m reeeeally considering giving Kraw and his mom Yuna horizontal tails, or a fancy fluke like I did for Serkan….

I mean, swimming side to side can’t be good on Kraw’s hips if anything :P

And I know I posted a couple years ago about Gen ‘seeing the eye’ here in an ask, but I definitely want to change that. I feel like that’s flat to me now. Where I’ve developed more of the environment for the city of Fever, she more or less finds a secret deep in the Hearth (the Fever/Ladder’s citadel) rather than just ‘somehow’ seeing Yvishnir’s eye underwater and receiving ‘energy’. What she sees and receives from Yvishnir should be more than that. She definitely leaves more of an impact on The Ladder and Fever before she finds Kraw. Plus, giving Yvishnir a definite ‘eye’ doesn’t sit right idk.

While I feel like I don’t want to necessarily delete old posts or too much old art because it’s kind of proof of growing pains in a way, I will either tag it as ‘old art’/make it unrebloggable altogether because it makes me anxious seeing old stuff/old character designs on here. I guess it’s insecurity, frustration, imposter syndrome, take your pick.

There are just a lot of details that gnaw at me and I guess at least making a few footnotes here is some kind of way to express them. I just feel bad when I don’t have art to go with it.

I know most people are going to be like “huh what” since I don’t post enough worldbuidling stuff on here but I’m changing the alleged bottom/body of Hellmouth to “Abaton” rather than Tartarus. I like how that sounds better.

(Hellmouth is a common name for the massive split/leveled abyss/mother of trenches in the middle of Mors Astra’s ocean where all the leviathans/saints live and supposedly guard Abaton. These levels are what I often mention as ‘Depth Charges’ in some creatures descriptions I write)

Sketch of Kraw asleep in his captain’s den (Jago calls it the ‘squash pit’). His bed is literally like a small in-ground pool lined with blankets and pillows and a makeshift mattress nest; he’s had to be very innovative to make his boat accommodating for him. I didn’t draw enough of his trinkets and clutter but he enjoys hanging things and the look of paper lanterns. Ellie and her kids make them for him.

Not sure if anyone remembers Nimbus, but I changed him a bit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ you know the drill. Been thinkin on him.

He’s a ‘sooty’ variation of a Kymagryph; a bit of a smaller breed from a far more southern region. The former owner of the Asheweaver estate had bought him from poachers as a kit.

Nimbus is the first and only known Kymagryph raised in captivity. There was an attempt to make him accustomed to being ridden or even a glorified messenger pigeon. This was kind of backburnered for a time and since then the former Dr. Asheweaver had met his fate. Sylvaine along with her team have elected to taking care of Nimbus.

Since he’d spent too long poorly raised in captivity Sylvaine found that he couldn’t properly integrate himself into any of the Kymagryph flocks further up north of the island. They were far bigger and the males were particularly aggressive towards Nimbus, hence the nasty scars on his head. He didn’t seem interested in leaving Tattered Wing either though, making his own nest in the fjords, staying close to the estate. He still takes long flights however, retuning after a few months and sometimes bringing ‘gifts’.

He holds some form of deep respect for Sylvaine, which makes her wonder if he has imprinted on her in some way. He minds her above anyone else. Some of the people of Marrowtide like to say that Nimbus is ‘the eyes of the harpy woman that lives on Tattered Wing’, believing that Sylvaine possesses Nimbus’s body on his flights. She finds this amusing if anything.

Drew Sylvaine for size reference. I guess he’d be measure in heads like a horse.

Strangely enough rewatching The Green Knight for the fourth time gave me inspiration as well.

Here’s new, fluffed up Unai

A gentle nature deity but with a dark purpose. Shepards, cattlemen and farmers bring him their ‘cursed’ livestock to serve as purgatorial vessels in his flock. He’s a god of the wilds, pasture, fetal monstrosities and wanderers. He might be a bit of a psychopomp too idk yet. I feel like he’d be most similar to Pan.

I’m essentially making another headworld for him now since he’s not in Hallowed Carrion, so more to come 🌿
