PENS!
So my fude I bought off aliexpress back in 2020 finally bit the dust (it was a very cheap pen but I liked it a lot) so I inked up some oldies in the mean time. I'm hoping to find a good new inking pen when I go to Japan next month!

this Sailor Fude De Mannen has a bent nib, which looks weird but gives a ridiculous amount of line variation. Fude comes from the Japanese for Brush, and while i don’t think this is a substitute for a brush pen, it’s definitely a nice, unique experience.

Hi there! I just found your art and I was wondering what brush you use in Procreate? Atleast I think it’s Procreate, if not ignore me. Regardless I love your art/style.
Thank you!
Hi and thank you!! Yep, you got it – I use and adore Procreate 🥰
I talked about what brushes I use for my art in [ this post here ] and honestly it's all still the same brushes lol!
I have been exploring some fun new options though just because I like to change things up every now and then~ Lately, I've been experimenting with [ this free brush ] by Magdalina Dianova and [ this $1 "Sailor Fude 40" brush ] by Wendy Xu (The Sailor Fude DE Mannen fountain pen is my absolute favorite pen of all time to sketch with traditionally so I HAD to hop on this Procreate brush version of it!)

Fude nib sketching. Sailor Mannen de Fude.
Good inexpensive alternative to flex nibs for those looking for line variability on the cheap.
Also a bit easier and faster to use, if you don't mind twisting the pen around to get fat strokes. really good for quickly and precisely filling in blacks. I normally use my Pentel Pocket brush for the task, but it can be a bit tough to get really tight spots without going over a line.
Id still say a flex nib has more fun bounce, but it's like sketching with a rapier versus a machete. Rapier is beautiful but difficult to fight with. but you cant deny how gorgeous the forms are, and nothing beats the precision. Machete is a beautiful multi tool thats far sturdier but has the nice swish and form all its own. And requires way less finagling to wield.
i can see the fude being more beneficial for fast sketching where as the flex is better for careful considered inkwork.

Sailor Lecoule Fude de Mannen Tsukigumo セーラー レクル ふでDEまんねん(月雲)
I may have gone feral and jumped on buying this a bit too fast 🙈
I bought this directly from Sailor's online shop and used Tenso to deliver it to me in Canada. These Fude de Mannen pens were released as a pair, Tsukigumo's nib is bent at 55° while Yuugumo's is bent at 40°. I think it's cute that these pens were created with a cloud theme in mind, Tsukigumo = moon cloud and Yuugumo = evening cloud 🌙⛅
The colours in Sailor's stock photos are more accurate. My phone can't seem to capture the blue of the pen quite right, you can definitely tell that the blue in Tsukigumo is more yellow-leaning when you're looking at it in real life. It's not a deep, navy blue like my photos 🙇‍♀️ The white parts of the pen is semi-transparent and is pearlescent, which goes really well with the "moonlit cloud" imagery.

I only bought Tsukigumo since I already have two pens that have a 40° fude nib (Hocoro dip pen and Yurameku Profit Jr.)
Tumblr media
I think it's because I hold my pen pretty upright when I write, I like the feel the 55° fude nib more, I experience less "scratch" and barely have to adjust my hand as opposed to when I'm using the Hocoro fude nib, it takes me a while to find that "sweet spot" when I'm using the Hocoro.

Below are some writing samples of the Hocoro fude nib (40°) and the Lecoule Fude de Mannen (55°). It's very easy to get thicker lines with the Lecoule without straining my wrist. Most people would probably use a fude nib for calligraphy but I'm excited to draw and doodle with this pen!

Ink and Pen Review: Limited Edition Sailor Dipton + Mellow Forest Hocoro Ink & Dip Pen Set (Fude Nib)
Review by Tina Koyama Anyone who has ever glanced through my personal blog knows that I’m a fude nib fan. Let’s just say I’ve tried “a few.” My very first that got me hooked on exploring others was the entry-level Sailor Compass Fude de Mannen (55-degree angle). After upgrading a few notches, the Compass is not one I reach for much anymore, but it’s still the one I recommend to others as a good…

Festival of the Photocopier was lots of fun! Thanks for stopping by my table 💕 Here are some quick sketches from the weekend of people looking at zines... #gottagofast
These were done with a couple of fountain pens I usually carry with me: a Sailor Fude de Mannen (blue ink) and Platinum Preppy with EF nib (black ink). Also, the blue line in the second image is the binding in my handmade sketchbook 😎

Dancer of Five Stanzas, 2020 五節舞姫 (Gosechi no Maihime)
The Genjimonogatari series isn’t dead!! I've just been busy and distracted by lots of other things.
It was considered bad form for noblewomen in Heian-era Japan to be seen by men other than family - father, husband, brothers. They took great pains to hide their faces behind sleeves or fans. A major exception was the Gosechi Dancer.
The Gosechi Dance was inspired by a legendary tale of Emperor Temmu witnessing a group of celestial maidens descending from the sky. The event typically took place as part of an imperial harvest celebration, and four or five (depending on the timing of the particular festival) unmarried maidens would be selected from various noble families to participate in a public performance. As you might imagine, it was a big deal to be picked; these ladies would’ve been very much admired, attaining kind of a celebrity status. And as you might also imagine, there was kind of a titillating dimension to it too.
In the Tale of Genji, there are two primary characters associated with the Gosechi Dancer. The first is a woman who had a relationship with Genji and they continue to correspond, including during his exile. The second, many years later, is actually the daughter of Koremitsu, one of Genji’s most faithful servants, whom Genji picks to be one of the dancers because she's supposed to be very beautiful.
During the period when Genji's son Yugiri has been banned from the love of his young life (Kumoi no Kari) because her dad To no Chujo was having an unreasonable fit, he happens to see Gosechi Dancer II. He gets a little infatuated, and manages to send a letter through the dancer’s reluctant brother. (This scene is even funnier in the historical AU fanfic Inaka Genji, where the brother whines that he doesn't want to do it because his sister thinks he's a pain and his dad would kick his ass, but AU Yugiri is like “if you don’t deliver this letter, I’ll commit harakiri!!”) When Koremitsu intercepts the letter, he’s initially dad-mad, but after he learns it’s from GENJI’S SON, he totally changes his tune. “Ohhhh. Well that’s OK then. Look how nice his handwriting is! You should make your handwriting nicer like that too!”
After the Yugiri Behaves Badly chapter, Gosechi Dancer II (who has by that time become Dame of Staff) sends a letter of empathy to her love rival Kumoi no Kari, bringing the two women closer, which I thought was a nice touch.

“Dreaming of Lavender”
Featuring my Jupiter Djinni OC, Plume 🪶
This is my first time using fountain pen inks as a painting medium rather than just in my pens, and I quite like the result! I drew this whole piece with only two inks if you can believe it—Platinum Carbon Black for the lines, and Sailor Manyo Nekoyanagi for the rest. Chromashading inks like Nekoyanagi are difficult to photograph consistently because of their colour shifting properties, but the results are rewarding.
Pens: Kaweco Sport (M), LAMY Safari (F), Sailor Fude De Mannen 55° Nib, Sakura Gelly Roll White (08)
Inks: Platinum Carbon Black, Sailor Manyo Nekoyanagi

“Hatake! I say! My blighter of an aunt is popping into town, and she’s bringing the sprog with her!”
“Very good, sir. When shall we expect to receive Lady Tsunade and Miss Sakura?”
“She’s invited themselves over for tea! But–dash it all–I’m supposed to be helping Abby prop up the Uchiha this afternoon! How the devil am I to be in two places at the same time?!”
“Perhaps you could be honest with her, sir.”
“Honest? With Aunt Tsuny? Gads, man, have you taken leave of your senses? That would never do!”
