i'm not trying to start anything, but i just saw a post criticizing misha collins for not choosing to quit spn when the network was homophobic and he was "profiting from homophobia" and i just think it's kind of... wild? that young people think that a person could just. decide to not work for a prejudiced corporation when they have a family to provide for?

i don't know, i don't even really want to debate or go into it more, but it's just kind of surreal to see opinions from people who weren't there in 2013 when misha collins was literally the only person willing to support not just destiel shippers but actual queer and trans and ace fans. i have no doubt that he saved lives through the care he showed to vulnerable young people who desperately needed to see someone give a damn about them. he's significantly flawed in many ways, but he will always be a saint in my eyes for how much he cared.

like i just don't think that people accustomed to this modern era where hardly anyone blinks over two men kissing on tv can understand what it was like when we were mocked and silenced, when we weren't allowed to breathe the word 'destiel' without getting booed, and misha was the only damn person who spoke up for us. the only one. who was probably risking his job in saying the things he did.

things have changed. that's wonderful. don't judge people surviving previous eras by the standards of today.

Ryan did a bunch of interviews recently that I've been reading and I have some thoughts. You can find the interviews here and here.

There's a lot of terrible stuff in it but I don't have the time or inclination to bother with all that. I'm going to be focusing on two things he said in the interviews.

Starting with this from the House of the Dragon podcast which I've linked above.

In it, Ryan talks about why he decided to contrast the lives of Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White with the lives of the privileged Targaryens. It was fascinating to get a peek into his head.

Ryan reads a rapist and thinks "this is a person worth deepening. We need an in-depth exploration of what goes on in this rapists head. We need the audience to sympathise with them."

Which wouldn't be so bad on its face, there's always room to analyse a fictional rapist. The problem is that he then reads about a little Black girl who raised herself on a tiny island rising up to become a dragon rider on her own merit. A little girl whose Valyrian heritage is constantly debated and discounted. He reads that and decides that there's nothing worth exploring there. Her story isn't unique. She isn't unique. In fact, she's so common that while we adapt and humanise not one but two rapists, we're going to erase one Black girl and turn the other into everyone's punching bag.

Then I read his puff piece from Big Think.

This is a fascinating glimpse into his thought process. I read this and Ryan Condal's baffling decisions began to make a little more sense.

By his own admission, Ryan's ideal show is one where Black women are erased, flattened and ignored. He claims to write powerful women but we've not seen hide or hair of these women. In Ryan's show, nothing is ever deliberate and the women are largely passive participants in their own lives.

In Ryan's ideal show there's no room for a little black girl to claim a dragon with nothing but faith and her wits. In Ryan's ideal show we need all of the rapist men but the Black women are interchangeable AND replaceable.

In Ryan's ideal world, it is too much to ask that a Black girl be adored, have songs written about her and knights joust for her favour. In Ryan's ideal show, Black people aren't fully developed characters, they're props that he forgets about for episodes on end.

And that is why the show will continue to drop in ratings. When I saw the Nielsen numbers for the premiere, I laughed until I cried. The biggest streaming day ever for Max and they couldn't beat The Boys or Your Honour. The most recent numbers are even funnier.

But don't worry gang, House of the Dragon is doing great. It's now number three. It finally beat a four year old show! Everything is fine.

I don't think the consequences of Ace's death have fully been realized in the story yet.

I can't stop thinking about the Wano flashbacks when Yamato is reading Oden's diary and we see that part where Roger says that he wants his son to be the one to find the One Piece. His son that's not even born yet.

This is so intriguing to me. What did they learn on Laugh Tale that made Roger think that he needed to have a biological child?? Why did he want his son specifically to be the one to find his treasure? Is this just a dad wanting great things for their kid or something more?

And I don't think it's a coincidence that he has this kid with a woman that also has the "D" initial. Rouge was the first female character in the series to have the D in her name (I know Vivi was introduced before Rouge and has the D too but we didn't know that about Vivi until recently). My point is, the fact that both of Ace's biological parents have the D initial has to mean something. I refuse to believe it's just a coincidence.

So what was the reason that Roger decided to have a kid? It's made very clear that he wanted his own kid to be the one to find the One Piece. That obviously can't happen now with Ace being dead so I wonder if there will be any repercussions to this? If Roger specifically had Ace with a woman who also had the D initial and he specifically wanted Ace to find the One Piece and thus be the next Pirate King, how will Ace being dead change whatever plans Roger had for the future??

I truly believe that Ace is absolutely not done haunting the narrative. I think he still has a role to play in the story despite being dead. I think his death itself will come back as some plot device that will impact the narrative going forward once we finally get to Laugh Tale and learn what the One Piece and the D initial really are.

Everyone thinks he'd go covered head to toe wearing those wet suits divers use, but no. Noritoshi isn't the type to want to attract attention to himself when it's not needed, so he'd try to blend in. Emphasis on try.

He's the guy wearing a covering or some shit. I think you'd have to fight him to wear a translucent one. (if you splash him with water, you'll acheive the same effect thoughahahaha) even though it's a beach, he's trying to find an appropriate way to cover up, hes just like that. yes to sunscreen ofc. I can see him in a sun hat, but it's not his.. maybe he took it from one of the girls

God, Generator Rex just kills me sometimes. This one scene from Six Minus Six just hits me right in my emotions every time I can't stop thinking about it. The closest Rex comes in canon to explicitly calling Six his dad and it's when he can't remember him and is actively trying to kill him. "I'm not your parent, kid." "You're close enough." The way Six visibly hesitates before attacking him again. The way Rex has so much faith in Six even when he's about to drive a sword into his chest. I'm never getting over this ever.

ngl, the more I think about it, the more I feel conflicted over how people sexualize my characters.

On the one hand, it would be silly to deny that I don't go out of my way to create aesthetically pleasing/attractive characters because I love to draw what I enjoy, and I love it when people simp for them.

But on the other hand, sometimes it does bother me that people are so fixated on sex and their own arousal that they miss important lore/plot information that I get a bit frustrated
