The rough stretch of beard burn across his thighs was a new sensation, though not entirely unpleasant. Everything about this was new, thrilling and terrifying, and Buck enjoyed picking at the seams that had sewn this part of him up for so long. He liked dismantling this wall he hadn't even known he'd constructed until he met Tommy, who came into Buck's life like a sledgehammer, shattering Buck's preconceptions of himself. It was funny, in a way, that Tommy seemed to know Buck better than he knew himself, and he was a guiding hand– mouth, cock– through this exciting time.

I wrote 403 words of my FTH fic today! I should clarify - these were the FIRST 403 words. It's a tiny accomplishment that I'd never normally note, but after months of writer's block that's seemed insurmountable (I truly felt as though I'd lost all ability I'd ever had and that I'd never be able to write again), it's something. I'd been struggling with the outline after about Chapter 3 or so, but decided to just start writing anyway. I don't think it's especially brilliant, but penning even these few words has made me feel so much better. I'll get there. :)

WIP Whenever

the lovely @outtoshatter tagged me WIP whenever this week and i have (fortunately or unfortunately) started another wip based on this post, egged on by @elisela that i have approximately three paragraphs written about so far, with an outline another 3 pages long. so here's what I have in this hellhound stiles, bookshop-owner derek, stiles and parrish army bffs sterek fic. (spoiler: it's mostly angst)

For a few seconds after Stiles wakes up, he has a hard time separating dream from reality, the smell of smoke so pervasive, so real, that it feels like he’s still in Afghanistan. His lungs burn as he gasps, eyes searching wildly in his childhood bedroom, and there’s a haze in the air, and – fuck, the sheets are on fire. On reflex, he throws himself out of bed, shaking his hands and watching the flames on his skin promptly fizzle out, and grabs the sheets, smothering the fire against his skin.  His hands are shaking and his heart’s still racing, but he calmly goes to the window and slides it open wide, thankful (not for the first time) that the fire alarm in his room has been disabled since he was a toddler. He’s thankful, too, for the cold breeze blowing tonight, clearing the smoke out of the room before it can slip into the rest of the house. Stiles can’t smell it anymore, but he can taste it, in the back of his throat, can hear the screams a little too clearly, so he leans out of his window, gripping the frame and squeezing to stem the tremors in his hands.  In four, he thinks, taking a deep, shaky breath. Hold four. His heart thumps heavily behind his ribcage, still racing like he’s been running in full kit. Out four. A slow, shaky exhale, his heart thudding softer and slower as the air rushes out of his lungs.

Totals Time!

It's been a year of records and record-breaking. Of reaching new fandom spaces and building new community ties. It's been wild. And absolutely fantastic.

When we closed the auction signup window we had 981 offers —nearly 150 more than we'd ever had before. When we re-opened it for 4 more hours, hoping to find another 19 folks (because we wondered what an auction with 1000 offers would look like) you all came through in spades, boosting the auction everywhere and bringing back 100 new offers in 15 new fandoms, bringing us to 1081 offers this year - a 33% increase over our previous record.

And you all weren't done breaking records. Shattering them.

This is the first year that any of our supported nonprofit orgs has received a 5-digit sum. And? TWO of them did.

So. Are you ready to see what our community has done? Are you ready for the numbers?

Huge thanks to our 797 creators offering 1081 auctions in more than 400 different fandoms and subfandoms, and to everyone who bid! And to our 17 fan crafters who brought in $4,127 of that total —60% more than our previous crafting record!

So, what's next?

Contact deadlines:

Creators, be sure you contact your bidders by April 1, and bidders, on your end please respond to their communication by April 15!

Bidders need to provide their creator with a workable prompt by June 30 (unless you've worked out a different timeline together) to ensure they have plenty of time to finish their fanwork.

Once the fanwork is posted, let us know via our form (can you believe FOURTEEN creators have already finished??) and if you’re posting it on AO3 be sure to add it to the Fandom Trumps Hate 2024 collection. If you’re writing a fic for FTH and need help from our Regiment of Fan Laborers, email us! As always, the deadline for completed fanworks is December 31.

We hope that for at least some people, your involvement in FTH will lead to continued action throughout the year. Sign up for our organizations’ email lists, check out their volunteer opportunities, and help boost their signals on social media!

We have a packet of organizational materials we’ve been sharing with other auction organizers since 2017; we’re planning to spend the month of April overhauling and updating these materials to incorporate many of the improvements we’ve implemented since then. Officially chosen a fic prompt in conjunction with my highest bidder, the incredibly generous Sherlock fandom legend @discordantwords! Now to the hard part... ideas. And fleshing everything out. Good thing that’s also the fun part. 💜

Really though, this is so exciting. I cannot thank ⭐️ @discordantwords ⭐️enough just for the boost of motivation that this gives me! I just hope I can come through on the execution. 🌈 Happy Fandom Trumps Hate, everyone. 🌈

FTH Fanbinding: "Kaleidoscope" by Silvergirl

Whew. This was quite the undertaking as I’d felt ambitious. @totallysilvergirl was the winner of my FTH fanbinding auction and chose one of her own fics, from a fandom I’m actually in (Sherlock). I’d skimmed her AO3 to see what fics might be her potential choice and had immediately zeroed in on “Kaleidoscope”. The title was evocative and the plot sounded intriguing, being a fix-it for the end of Season 3. Good-sized wordcount, too.

I was super happy when she actually chose this fic!

The typesetting took me a long time and I leaned very heavily into the whole kaleidoscope theme. I also decided to use different colours and fonts for the different PoVs.

This was also the first time I tried out a title page spreading over both pages – usually, I’ve only used the right page and the left one stayed blank, but I wanted to try spreading out the picture this time. It worked quite well, overall.

For endpapers, I chose this lovely purple Chiyogami paper. Purple has become Sherlock’s colour, in a way, and so it seemed quite fitting. I strengthened the crease with Schirting again.

Also, because the book had 8 signatures, I think, I sewed with tapes to make the spine more secure. It was the second time trying this and it worked really well!

Now to the case. Oh boy. XD

I had to think a bit about the cut-out design. I wanted it to yet again resemble a kaleidoscope, but it took me a while to wrap my head around how best to do it. I finally decided to make a stencil for the centrepiece and add some more elements without cut-outs.

I decided on the lovely shattered glass rainbow foil and am super in love with the effect, especially on the spine! I think it looks so cool!

I not only made SilverGirl’s copy but also one for myself. They’re very similar, just the endpapers and the foil on the cover are different.

I messed up on the spine title on my copy a bit. The fight with the foil is real. *sigh* But it’s not too bad.

It's the time of the year again! It's time to come together as a pack and support progressive non-profits through Fandom Trumps Hate donations!

A little bit about Fandom Trumps Hate

FTH is an online fanworks auction, designed to raise money for progressive nonprofit organizations that help and support marginalized people. In the past seven years, thousands of fans have joined forces to raise nearly $240,000 for a range of progressive organizations.

Let's Sterek this up and come together to knock Sterek works out of the park! Last year we had 27 Sterek offers and 23 Sterek offers in 2022. Let's up those numbers!

So, what are you willing to offer? If you are an author, artist, beta, or provide other services within fandom, all are welcome!

Check out the list below for different types of fanworks and fan labor to get an idea of what you may like to sign up for.

You can offer any type of fanwork that can be delivered digitally, including:

written fanworks (fic, poetry, remixes, etc.)

digital art, which includes but is not limited to gifsets, manips, mood boards, etc.

podfics

fanvids (including fancams)

fan labor, which includes but is not limited to betaing, brit/japan/America-picking, or offering specialist expertise.

Fandom Trumps Hate 2024!

Looking for a scene drawn for your story? A piece to help inspire you to write a fic? A new icon? How about covers for your story with full print-ready Graphic Design service?
