SuperBat Fic Recs

Woaaaah boy. I was in the Superbat tag and saw someone asking for recs and I got about 5 fics in before I realized that wouldn't fit in a reply and decided I should just make a whole post. I feel like I've read half of the Bruce/Clark tag on ao3 at this point and yet I still find more every time I look.

As a note, this post is heavily editorialized. These are all fics I've personally read and are here because I liked them and they come from my ao3 bookmarks. If you want better details about the fic, follow the links and check them out 🤷‍♀️ I'm a picky reader so the fact that it's on the list says a lot, though our tastes may vary.

Onto the recs! I'll organize them by ratings and then by length for simplicity and at the end I'll recommend some of my favorite SuperBat authors for further reading!

Technically a series of fics. Pure fluff. 1. Someone spots the Batman kissing Mild Mannered Reporter Clark Kent. Hijinks ensue. 2. Superman kissed Bruce Wayne in full view of several dozen phones. Now the whole world, including Lex Luthor, knows Superman has a boyfriend. But that's okay. Batman has a plan. 3. Deleted scenes from the How to Date a Superhero series, ruthlessly cut in most cases to prevent the Robins from taking over.

like. bruh. susie did it again. This tag says it all: communication failure. I love this one though. Summary: Batman and Superman are fucking. Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are a great cover for fighting crime, and also might be dating. Bruce and Clark have no idea what they're doing; but they definitely aren't going to be able to talk themselves into stopping.

A Night Off and sequel A Day Off by Mawiiish (~37k combined; first part is E, second is T)

One of my all-time favorites. My bookmark says 10/10 would read again soooooooo... 👀🤷‍♀️😅🥵

Bruce is enjoying one of his few nights off when a very persistent young man offers to buy him a drink. At first he's apprehensive; he's just here for a good time and this Clark seems to be looking for more than that. Then again, what harm can one drink do?

Clark wakes up to an empty bed and despite Bruce being honest from the start, he's still disappointed.

The Downsides to a Secret Identity by liodain (~42k rated E)

I'm currently reading this one – the summary from the author says it all, it's so good but sooo drama:

Bruce Wayne has taken a shine to Clark Kent, but Clark is more interested in the Bat of Gotham. The Bat, however, has it in for the Superman in a big way. Clark should probably have considered that before falling quite so hard. They're working together to track down some missing Kryptonian weaponry, after all...

50 Shades of Wayne by susiecarter (~161k rated E)

No but listen, this is actually so full of plot and emotional depth and not as much smut as you might think. It's a full-scale retelling of Batman v Superman but without them knowing each other's secret identities. I read it in one go... the reveal? Maybe the best I've ever read. Soooo many emotions. It's one of the few times I've read BDSM in a fic and it actually felt in character. I wasn't sure I would read it when I started, but it was a compelling read and extremely well done. Honestly, I'd read it again.

Wet Beast Wednesday: ocean sunfish

Everybody knows ocean sunfish, right? Those giant, slow, silly-looking, parasite-ridden morons that eat jellyfish and can't defend themselves from predators really are the worst fish right?

First of all there's no such thing as a "best" or "worst" animal and judging animals by human standards of what is cool or successful is silly because our standards are not even universal among humans, let along other species. Secondly, the closest thing we have to a way to judge a species is how successful it is in its niche and sunfish are doing pretty good, thank you very much. Today I'll be talking about sunfish and how they are not bad fish at all.

Ocean sunfish, or molas, are members of the family Molidae, which is divided into five known species across three genuses. Im mostly going to be talking about members of the genus Mola, but I'll mention the other two as well. Molas are known for their size and odd appearances, looking like someone chopped a fish in half and the front half went swimming off on its own. They are members of the order Tetraodontiformes, making them cousins to pufferfish, triggerfish, boxfish, and others. While many members of that order are known to be highly poisonous, molas are not. They also lack several other common traits. Despite being bony fish, most of the mola skeleton is made of cartilage and they do not have swim bladders, forcing them to actively swim to maintain their position in the water column. Instead of a tail and caudal fin, sunfish have a structure called the clavus. The clavus is formed mostly from connective tissue and is used as a rudder. Because the clavus is mostly made of connective tissue, damage to it is not particularly harmful to the fish. There have been molas found alive and well that have had portions of their clavus eaten by predators. Because of their shortened stature, molas have the fewest vertebrae of all fish. The dorsal and anal fins are elongated and are used to provide propulsion by flapping back and fourth similarly to how birds wings move, albeit slower. Minute alterations in the angle each fin moves through the water help with steering, while more sharp turns are aided with jets of water ejected through the mouth and gills. Like their other Tetraodintid relatives, mola teeth are fused together into a beak-like structure that prevents them from closing their mouths. They also have some more regular pharyngeal teeth in the backs of their mouths. Some reports say that the fish can make noises by grinding the pharyngeal teeth together. Mola skin is thick and rough, described as being similar to sandpaper in texture. Like most fish, the skin is covered in a layer of protective mucus.

The three species in the genus Mola are Mola mola, the ocean sunfish and most well-known of the molas, Mola alexandrini, the giant, southern, or bumphead mola, and Mola tecta, the hoodwinker sunfish. Mola mola has an average weight of 247 to 1000 kg (545 to 2205 lbs), mouth to clavus length of 1.8 m (5.9 ft) and dorsal to anal fin length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft), though some individuals can get much large. The largest individual on record had a length of 3.3 m (10.8 ft), height of 3.2 m (10.5 ft) and weighed 2300 kg (5100 lbs). M. alexandrini is the largest of the species. The largest known southern sunfish measured in at 2744 kg (6049 lbs) and 3.25 m (10.66 ft) from mouth to clavus, making it the largest known bony fish in the world. They can be distinguished from M. mola by the presence of bumps on the forehead and chin, a more rounded clavus, and differently-shaped scales. M. tecta is known as the hoodwinker sunfish because it was long mistaken for one of the other two species and was only identified as a separate species in 2015 after the body of one washed up in Christchurch, Aotearoa/New Zealand and was examined by scientists. Because it has only recently been discovered, little is known about this species. They appear to have the same range of sizes and weights of the other two species and can be distinguished by a slimmer body shape and a smooth clavus. All three species are found in tropical and temperate waters worldwide, though M. alexandrini and M. tecta are more commonly found in the southern hemisphere.

Molas are open-ocean dwellers that live life in the slow lane. For a long time, it was believed they were moved around by ocean currents they could not swim against, making them plankton. We now know they not only can swim against the current, they are capable of bursts of speed fast enough to breach the water's surface and briefly go airborne. Sunfish are named for their habit of basking at the surface of the water. It was formerly believed they spent most of their time at the surface, but thanks to tagging, we know they make frequent dives into the deep ocean. They likely bask at the surface to warm up between dives. You may not expect something as slow as a sunfish to be a predator, but they are. Much of their diet consists of gelatinous animals including jellyfish, siphonophores, ctenophores, and salps, though they will also eat small fish, fish larvae, squids, crustaceans, and even seagrass. Because they can't chew, sunfish move prey into and out of their mouth by rapidly switching between sucking water in and spitting it out in order to shred the prey into pieces small enough to swallow. Special mucus lining the digestive system may protect the molas from the stinging tentacles of their prey. Molas and other jellyfish-eaters like the leatherback sea turtle play an important role in the ecosystem by keeping jellyfish populations down. Jellyfish are not particularly nutritious, so the sunfish need to eat a lot of them to survive, something they seem to be pretty good at. Being slow and having a very low-energy lifestyle helps the fish survive on a less-nutritious diet, making them very energy efficient. One thing molas get a lot of flack for online is having lots of parasites (with up to 40 known species). This doesn't really make sense. Every species has parasites. An animal in the wild that doesn't have parasites is vanishingly rare. Having parasites doesn't make an animal suck, it makes them ordinary. Because of their parasite load, molas are frequent visitors to cleaner fish, who will eat their parasites. Molas will also let seabirds land on them and eat their parasites while they rest on the surface. The molas attract birds by splashing at the surface. Adult molas have few natural predators, but are hunted by sharks, sea lions, and orcas. Interestingly, sea lions have been known to kill molas apparently for sport, ripping off the fins and then leaving the mola to die.

Molas are broadcast spawners who release their gametes into the water alongside each other. A female mola can release 300 million eggs at a time, more than any other vertebrate. Newly hatched sunfish are 2.5 millimeters long and are often cited as having the largest discrepancy in size between juvenile and adult of any vertebrate. An adult mola can be 60 millions times the weight of a larva. The larvae look very different than adult, lacking their dorsal and anal fins but having pufferfish-like spines. Juveniles school together for protection and become solitary as they age. The diet of the fish varies as they age, with younger fish feeding more on squid, worms, crustaceans, and fish but becoming more reliant on jellyfish and other gelatinous prey as they age. We don't know the growth rate of molas, but a juvenile in the Monterey Bay Aquarium grew from 26 to 339 kg (57 to 880 lbs) in 15 months, suggesting they grow rapidly. The maximum age of molas is unknown, though individuals in captivity have lives for up to 10 years.

The two non-Mola sunfish are Ranzania laevis, the slender sunfish and Masturus lanceolatus, the sharptail sunfish. Both are alone in the genuses, but other species are suspected. I also found references to other species in Masturus, but could find literally no information about them other than that Masturus oxyuropterus is listed in some records. The sharptail sunfish looks very similar to Mola mola and reaches similar sizes, but its clavus has an extension that looks like a short tail. They were initially believed to be deformed molas before being recognized as a separate species. Unlike molas, sharptail sunfish are rarely seen at the surface, preferring to stay in deeper water. The slender sunfish is the smallest of the family, reaching up to a meter long. While we don't know much about them, we know their diet includes a lot of fast-moving squid, indicating they can move faster than their much larger relatives.

Mola mola is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN while the other species are classed as either data deficient or least concern. Molas are vulnerable to strikes by boats and bycatch. Another danger to them is plastic bags, which can easily be ingested after being mistaken for a jellyfish. The bags can suffocate the fish or block their digestive tracts. Despite their size, molas are docile and not dangerous to humans. I found one example of a mola harming a human and it happened when the fish jumped out of the water and landed on a boat. Allegedly, some fish have learned to recognize and approach SCUBA divers. Molas are difficult to keep in captivity due to their size, the amount of space the need, and special feeding needs, so only a few aquariums have them. Molas are captured for food, with the biggest markets being in Taiwan and Japan, where they are often called mambos.

The Gertrude was a fictional 300-ft (100 m) megayacht featured in the 2006 film Superman Returns. Envisioned as a lavish gift to the minor character Gertrude Vanderworth from her deceased husband, a wealthy shipping magnate, the vessel boasted an onboard gym, lounges, and several dozen cabins, but its crown jewel was the “marine gallery”, a gigantic library and lounge situated in the ship’s belly, below the waterline, which featured an expansive glass bottom for viewing the ocean depths.

The ship, inherited by Lex Luthor at Gertrude Vanderworth's passing, is dramatically destroyed in the movie in the course of enacting his nefarious plans.

what i can gather re: bizz's story to this point:

bizarro both created and destroyed bizarro world

he created and populated it with other bizarros like himself bc he felt like no one understood him

bizarro world was earth's counterpart, including a happy superfamily and dual identity life for bizarro (ie: "not clark kent")

during this period he made a lot of mistakes, with one panel implying that he even made a deal with lex luthor (who was presumably president at the time)

bizarro destroyed it bc he knew, ultimately, that everything—his planet and everything he was doing—was fake

what he regrets most is abandoning and killing his family

some things to glean from this:

in this webtoon: bizarro world = htrae from pre-crisis/earth-one, NOT bizarro world from post-crisis/pre-n52

however, it very much strays from htrae's ending (which involves a very convoluted plot ft. the phantom zone and also mr mxyzptlk that i still don't quite understand)

(the tl;dr is that a wizard began destroying htrae, and the bizarros living on it were glad to see the apocalypse occur, so in a very twisted move, bizarro lois and clark used a rocket to shoot bizarro superboy into the planet's core to finally destroy it, and when the planet exploded bizarro was beheaded in the chaos to land at clark's feet to utter his last words before dying)

(i swear this is real and imo it is the least complicated part of the story)

compare this to bizarro world from post-crisis/pre-n52, where that planet's counterparts were very literally opposite to new earth: loiz (bizarro lois) was miserable and hated bizarro (unlike clark and lois' loving relationship)

but afaik, bizarro world was never destroyed during new earth's existence

now, it's clear that the webtoon is drawing inspiration from htrae for bizarro's happy family life

but it's also drawing characteristics of bizarro from post-n52/prime earth with his angst and inner feelings

(yes, i stan brainzarro. and tbh rebirth bizz is still somehow a good character despite lobdell writing him?? a miracle tbh)

it's also very clear that [webtoon] bizarro intends to make things right, or at least do right by his family now that he has a second chance

all that being said: i'm curious to see how this'll be resolved

it'll almost certainly be rushed like a printing house during deadlines, and given the previous arcs it'll also be a disappointing ending despite having a really interesting start, but i am looking forward to seeing how webtoon bizarro continues to blend different continuities/character histories together. he's been the most successful among the outlaws in terms of story and characterization, and i've been pleasantly surprised by the direction taken for him thus far

My boyfriend has been growing really quickly lately. I mean we have extra tall 10 foot ceilings and he is now scraping them with his f*cking head. I have to make him clean his hair gel off of our ceilings when he isn’t careful. Worst of all, I measured him for this suit and made it for him last weekend, just 5 days ago. It fit him then, but today we had to cut the sleeves off just so he could get into it. It’s damned good I can sew, so he has clothes, but I wish I could buy him something. Now we are going to the hero convention as a 10 foot tall, 904 lbs and a 5 ft 4, 122 lbs Lex Luthor. That will be interesting. It takes a lot to look after a huge guy like my boyfriend, but he’s sweet, we both love each other dearly and I wouldn’t trade him for the world!

You were never gonna be a hero like your dad. That was one thing in life you could never do. Your powers were tied to your emotions and your identity would never stay secret for long. But you did have a knack for finding trouble just like your mother. It’s a surprise you haven’t ended up in the hospital for the number of times Clark had to save you from sticky situations as Superman or himself.

So it was no surprise when you ended up in an abandoned LexCorp warehouse. Some kids in the biology labs were talking about the place saying that mysterious fires would break out, but before they could call 911 the fires would stop. It was only natural that You would stumble across said warehouse for a closer look. The place was covered in a black paste near recent scorch marks.

You dropped your bookbag on the floor, grabbing a small candle from the side pocket. You lit it with a snap of lightning. “Hello!? Anyone here?” You called, your candle lighting the way. A shuffle by a stack of old boxes.

“I won’t hurt you!” You called, walking closer to the pile. You were taken off your feet faster than before. Your candle went out as a wet substance was spread across your face. You opened your eyes to be met with a snout? Finally, in control of your body, you lifted yourself off your back to sit properly on the concrete.

“A dog?”

You looked taken back by the white fur of a Great Dane? The breed didn’t match up but it was the best you could have thought of. The dog barked back at me, licking my cheek again. “You know, you are kinda cute” You smiled, the dog began jumping up and down before his eyes went red.

You ducked out of the way as the dog shot a heat blast. You looked back, speechless for a moment. “It was Lex, of course, it was Lex fucking Luthor!” You screamed, hating the fact the bald bastard experimented on a pup! The dog came over to you again, nuzzling your cheek. “You’re so cute, you even look like you’re from Krypton” You smiled, scratching his head. You noticed a silver dog tag chain around his neck.

“Project Krypto? Krypto, is that your name bud?” You asked him, earning a soft bark from him. “Okay, Krypto it is” You sighed, getting up from the ground. That’s when you noticed your ELT was flashing a bright red.

“Shit” You muttered before a large woosh almost took you off your feet. “(Y/N)! Are you hurt?” Your dad ran towards you, inspecting you with worry. Before you could answer, Krypto jumped? No, flew in between you both with his teeth showing at your father. “Krypto! Down!” You scolded the pup, who turned to face you with his big brown eyes. You finally turn to your father who look at you with his Superman look.

“It was Lex!” You had your hands in the are, pleading your innocence. Clark rolled his eyes at you. “A dog?” He sighed, titling his head. “He also had Kryptonian powers” You added, playing with your fingers as Krypto was now playing with scraps of wood. Clark’s eyes widened so much you could fit an entire roll of tape in them.

You gave him your own puppy dog eyes. “Can I keep him? Please Daddy” You begged him, hugging as tight as you could. Your father only raised an eyebrow at you. “No” He told you, eyeing Krypto as he floated up and down the area.

You pouted at him. “Please!” You asked, a little thunder cloud forming above you. Clark still held his ground at your protest. You huffed as Krypto wrapped himself around your ankles.

It had been a week since your little discovery and your father’s disagreement. But you had brought the boys to meet Krypto and your mother. You had convinced them to allow you to keep the cutest pup in the universe but even with your mother on board you needed just a little bit more of a shove.

You knocked on the door, the many Parisians looking at you in awe. Must have been the rainbow above your head. The door opened, your godmother smiling brightly. “(Y/N)! You fly fast” Diana smiled as she welcomed me inside my second home. Pictures of me and the boys littered the halls, some of my parents and their wedding.

“I learned from the best Auntie D” I smiled at her before giving her a hug. “Now, Lois tells me we need to convince Kal of keeping a super dog?” She asked me. I nodded with a sly smile on my face. “You got some blackmail for me?” I asked her. Her smirk began to form.

“Oh, my sweet goddaughter, blackmail is only the beginning of what I’ve got"
