I knew there was a study done in the US about using baking soda solution to wash fruit and remove the pesticides on the surface.
FYI the necessary dilution is 10 mg/ml or 10 g baking soda per liter of water. The fruit (in the example used, apples) needs to be submerged in the solution for 12-15 minutes. Rinse after, but do the soaking and rinsing close to eating so your fruit doesn’t spoil faster.
You can also use a vinegar solution, but you need 1/4 vinegar to 3/4 water, which is a lot or vinegar and creates a lot of fumes.
Anyway: what I found on the way to this information is that several „natural living“ and recipe blogs say „oh, you can pre-mix this handy spray, combining baking soda, vinegar and water and use that - but it foams a lot, wait for the foam to die down before using it“.
And once again, my chemistry-ignorant bloggers: combining baking soda and vinegar gives you oxygen and water. You’re transforming baking soda and vinegar into plain water. Which doesn’t do anything to surface pesticides. And just pisses me off, especially on recipes using a crapload of orange peels for marmalade.
So: EITHER use baking soda and water OR use vinegar and water.
And be aware that some pesticides go into the peel, too, and won’t be removed by this method.

My back was a bit sore today after yesterdays strength workout. I was a bit worried about how my run would go today. Turned out to be fine thank goodness. My post run walk around the garden certainly did cool me down very quickly. There is not much in flower this time of year but the brassicas look great.

The Chilean fruit and vegetable industry has embraced technological advancements to enhance productivity and efficiency. From precision agriculture and smart irrigation systems to state-of-the-art greenhouse facilities, technology plays a crucial role in optimizing crop yields, conserving resources, and ensuring year-round production.
Sustainable Practices:
Environmental sustainability is a key focus in Chile's fruit and vegetable cultivation. Farmers increasingly adopt sustainable practices, including organic farming, water conservation measures, and eco-friendly packaging solutions. These initiatives align with global sustainability goals and reflect the industry's commitment to responsible and environmentally conscious agriculture.
Market Dynamics:
The dynamics of the Chilean fruit and vegetable market are influenced by various factors, including weather conditions, global demand trends, and market access. Climatic variations can impact crop yields, while shifts in consumer preferences and international trade policies contribute to market fluctuations. Continuous monitoring and adaptation are crucial for industry players to navigate these dynamics successfully.
Challenges and Opportunities:
While the Chilean fruit and vegetable market has enjoyed substantial growth, it faces challenges such as water scarcity, labor availability, and the impact of climate change. These challenges, however, present opportunities for innovation, research, and investment in sustainable agricultural practices. The ability to address challenges effectively will be essential in maintaining the industry's upward trajectory.
