Reception of the Grand Condé at Versailles following his victory at Seneffe by Jean-Léon Gérôme, 1878. The Grand Condé bows towards Louis XIV as laurel wreaths are laid in his path, while captured enemy flags are displayed on both sides of the stairs. The battle of Seneffe was one of the most brutal of the periods, with one French nobleman writing "we have lost so much by this victory that without the Te Deum and captured flags at Notre Dame, we would believe we had lost the battle."

New JTTW Book!!!
La pérégrination vers l'Ouest: Intégrale des estampes de l'édition japonaise de 1806-1837 (English: The Journey to the West: Complete Prints from the Japanese Edition of 1806-1837) This new French publication collects and comments on restored woodblock prints from Ehon Saiyuki (繪本西遊記, 1806-1837), the first complete Japanese translation of Journey to the West. I have scans of the antique Chinese and Japanese versions of JTTW on my blog, and I can say with full confidence that the woodblock prints from the latter are FAR superior. They are gorgeous beyond words. Most are in black and white, but a few are in color.
Here is the official publisher link for those looking to buy:

"Louise-Marie de Bourbon, dite Mademoiselle de Tours; La fillette aux bulles de savon"
By Pierre Mignard
Oil Painting, 1681.
Château de Versailles.
PORTRAIT SUBJECT
La fillette aux bulles de savon, or the commonly found English title, Girl Blowing Soap Bubbles, is a portrait of innocence during the Franco-Dutch War.
The child shown is Louise-Marie de Bourbon, the daughter of the Sun King, Louis XIV, and his Maîtresse-en-titre, Françoise-Athénaïs de Rochechouart (Madame de Montespan). I'm sorry, I don't know why they popped off with the names like that when they're planning to reuse Marie and Louis fifty times over ptdr. Louise-Marie, affectionately known as Toutou, was an illegitimate birth (1674), later legitimized by her father when she was around two years old. She held the title of Mademoiselle de Tours from then until her untimely death in 1681.
According to sources, Mignard's painting of the six-year-old girl was finished posthumously. But, her innocence is held delicately, frozen in time on canvas.
THEMES OF CHILDHOOD INNOCENCE (TL;DR: YAPANESE)
Mignard's choice to paint Louise-Marie as an actual child was uncommon for the time (even centuries later, believe it or not; maybe not so good examples, but for argument-sake: Louis XV by Hyacinthe Rigaud, Mariana Victoria of Spain by Nicolas de Largillierre, Phillip II, Duke of Orléans, Reagent of France by Largillierre, and Élisabeth Charlotte d'Orléans, "Mademoiselle de Chartres" by Largillierre -- apologies for throwing you strays, man, I'm trying to finish writing this and your children portraits were on the same website next to each other x), as young royalty are painted either as babies (unbreeched/baptize gown) or as tiny adults (fixed in uncomfortable poses and wearing clothes a monarch would), no in between. Here, Louise-Marie is playing with bubbles, her dog jumping towards it, and she looks carefree, still with chubby cheeks of rose. It doesn't help much that children were seen as heirs to the family fortune, especially during a time when parents had multiple kids due to illness (premature death) and bringing in income (need I explain more... *cough cough* coal mines... a bit anachronistic, sorry breaker boys, some other time we'll discuss y'all).
A painting such as this one, showing a realistic human experience from a royal status and that of a child BEING a child, innocence still intact, is quite important, even in today's form. We take childhood for granted, and kids are forced to grow up despite having more rights now than before. It can be a portrait to remind us that innocence is vital (a lack of childhood is detrimental as the experience is needed in order to mature mentally and emotionally when entering the teen and adult stages of life), but also that we as humans weren't so different from back then (sure, you can claim we bathe more than they do despite your husband still not washing his ass, but my heavens, did the thought 'wait, they had bubbles back then' ever occur to you?).
Genuinely, I was going to pull a La Muse Verte (the post where I briefly explained the history of absinthe) and go into the history of bubbles... because you gotta admit, that'd be fun for the both of us. However, delving into the background and theme of this painting became more heartbreaking for me. The bubble idea isn't gone, but it'll be postponed as a full history lesson post (and, yes, Mignard's painting of the immortalized Toutou will be recycled).
FURTHER READING (EXTRA SYMBOLISTIC DETAIL)
Plenty more symbolism is present, but I highly recommend you all check out L'Art en Tête's in-depth article on Mignard's beautiful portrait. I did regurgitate some of the author's points in this because I thought they were brilliant, and you can tell they have an art-history degree, so I'm begging you to go over there for more detail if interested!

I don't think I know anything about Akhenaten or Europe at the time of the protestant reformation
So I'm curious
Why and what would happen? 🤔
Hi, thanks for the ask! So, really quick condensed summary some historical events and why mashing them together is incredibly funny to me:
The Protestant Reformation was when European politics got really spicy because a bunch of new versions of Christianity were splitting off from the Catholic Church after Martin Luther published his theses criticizing the church and translated the Bible into common languages for everyone to be able to read. All these new branches that weren’t tied to the church made the church lose the monopoly they’d once had on religious authority in Europe, and European monarchs then took advantage of this by separating their countries from the church so they could get a better hold on absolute power in their kingdoms.
Akhenaten was the Egyptian pharaoh who started what might be the first ever monotheistic religion (Judaism and Zoroastrianism are really hard to place dates for but it might have been the first) when he suddenly decided to outlaw the worship of every Egyptian god except for this one sun disk thing that almost no one had ever heard of before that point. He may have done this out of genuine religious devotion, or as a way to push the priests of the god Amun, who had been gaining enough political power to rival the pharaohs, out of power and keep his hold on political and religious power in ancient Egypt.
Unfortunately, no one really liked Akhenaten outlawing the all gods they been worshipping for at least a millennium and half at that point, and Egypt went back to the way it had been before almost immediately after Akhenaten died, The pharaohs that succeeded him tried to erase him from history, and he was only referred to in historical records after that as “the heretic” or “the rebel”.
So, one of the key things about Atenism (the religion the Akhenaten started) was that it outlawed all gods except for one, the Aten, which only Akhenaten and his family were supposed to be able to worship. Everyone else had to worship Akhenaten and his family, who would relay that worship onto the Aten. It was almost definitely on some level a ploy to give almost absolute religious and political power back to the pharaohs from a group of priests who had gained enough power to rival the pharaoh’s authority. But it failed, because the people of the time really did not like it.
The Protestant Reformation was an event where the balance of power was shifting away from the clergy who had previously had so much control over Europe and had been able to contest the power of monarchs, and now that monarchs were using that as an opportunity to break away from them and get a grip on absolute power. Which would make it an absolutely hilarious time to resurrect the pharaoh who might have invented monotheism for the purpose of gaining absolute power and watch him form a new branch of Christianity by going through the Bible and explaining how a bunch of the verses are totally about the Aten actually, and do something like gather enough followers to try and found a new ancient Egyptian style theocratic monarchy somewhere in Europe or somehow have his Atenism-Christianity hybrid become a super influential religion that endures to the modern day.
#Oh. There’s another very funny option but it’s one that I’m not sure how possible it would be even in this very fantastical scenario#And it’s just. Up and seizing the throne of France#I do not know enough about French history at this time to say if that is in any way possible#But it would be soooooooo funny#Akhenaten to Louis XIV: Look at me. Look at me. I’m the sun king now.#Ava has thoughts#akhenaten#Ancient egypt#the protestant reformation#History memes#Ancient egypt stuff

French Fairy Treasures
Around the World Treasures: Famous French Fairy Tales by the father of the French fairy tale Charles Perrault (1628-1703) and collected and adapted from the original Perrault by David Stone, was published in New York by Frankin Watts Inc., a division of Grolier, in 1959. The book includes The Picture Story of Perrault's Famous French Fairy Tales, illustrated by British artist and teacher Charles Mozley (1914-1991), a book illustrator and designer of posters, book covers, and print. Along with these striking color drawings are black-and-white illustrations depicting key moments within each story. Noel Streatfeild (1895-1986), an English children's book author, provides an introduction to the book. In it, she details the essential moments in Perrault's life that led him to write these stories. According to Streatfeild, before Perrault's Contes, nobody had ever read a fairy tale! Before that, these stories were passed down and enjoyed through oral tradition.
Perrault played a significant role in the literary controversy called the "Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns." At 23, he became a lawyer, following in his father's footsteps, before embarking on a political career, which led him into the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV of France. Spending time in his court is where Perrault garnered inspiration to write his stories. His simple, unaffected style breathed new life into half-forgotten folk tales. Interestingly, some of his versions influenced the German tales collected by the Brothers Grimm more than a century later.
So, whether you find yourself wondering in the woods like Little Red Riding Hood or dreaming of glass slippers like Cinderella, Perrault's timeless tales remain a delightful part of our childhood imagination, capturing the magic and wonder of storytelling for generations to come!
