Another bomb in Marcus’s diary is this sentence:
“They say they will find the vessel. The vessel will birth the king.”
Marcus is referring to “the king”, not dark king so i think it’s likely he’s talking about the Sun King here.
Almost all occurrences of the word “vessel” in Dark Heir is used to refer to the host body of a shadow. Does that mean the Sun King will be a returner?
I also felt like it could refer to Visander, given he is inside a “vessel” body and how happy Prescott was to find him. Idk if it means he would literally give birth tho. But the rush for the marriage with Phillip would make sense then too.

Dark rise 3 theories
Just finished the first and second book in one go, and want to write down my raw theories, until I forgot them.
Sun King is BAD (shock to no one). A pretty obvious one tbh — we never saw his face, Sarcean said he'd done some 'dark deeds' for him, but no one remembers him, saying he just 'disappeared'. I call it Suspicious. Maybe he even was the one who ordered the creation of the cup to enslave other Kings
Sun King is either related to Sarcean or to James (kinda don't feel like using his nickname). Either older brother or father. My bet goes on the older brother of Sarcean (but my secret wish is that he's the Father of James (to make ALL of his father figures assholes)). But probably we haven't seen his face exactly because he looks very similar to Will/Sarcean.
Sinclair either knows that about Sun King, or, more likely, he is Sun King Reborn (or Sun King possessing someone's body). That would also make him manipulating James especially horrible.
If Sinclair is Sun King, that might explain WHY there were false beliefs that the Collar would make James obey to whoever put it on him. If James and Sarcean knew that Sun King/Lady also can return it would be a nice trick to make them seek to put the Collar on James instead of killing James and/or destroying the Collar
Lady is probably also not as Good as everyone thinks, she is a Grey Character, way too obsessed with the idea of defeating Sarcean, or she is fully Bad, maybe even manipulating her husband Sun King
White death is connected to Lady (also a pretty obvious one), cause she is the one who killed Kathleen and sent Sandy back. (Why she can't travel in time herself is an interesting question)
Collar, collar, collar. It's currently revealed that the Collar does at least two things — shares Will's powers with James (Will felt the cold exactly the moment James puts the Collar on, and James can do powerful magic even after opening the Gates), and gives James his past life's memories back. So... it would be a bit strange to give such protective powers to the object that was meant to enslave James. So probably it doesn't control James in the way that he (and us) thought.
Maybe the Collar was meant to protect James from mind-control, and enslavement of the Sun King/Lady. (But my bet goes on Lady, because of the scene when Sarcean was arrested — he said "You called" as if she somehow enchanted him). Maybe if he is 'bonded' by Collar to Sarcean/Will no one else can control him -> hence inability to take it off.
Maybe that's why James felt such a compulsion to put it on, when he is near Will, cause deep down he felt that the Collar would protect him, instead of enslave him
Maybe the whole 'Dark King forced him to lay near his throne' was part of the lie, to convince everyone else that that's what's going on, so in the next life someone is tempted to put it on James, so James can get both his memories and power boost.
Then we have 'I will always find you, try to run'... It's definitely not just a phase, maybe it indicates the message that James sends in that scene, something like "If you run, I'll find you and join you", or, more likely, that later he did find Sarcean, and maybe Sarcean explained something to him, which made James switch sides
Almost forgot. I have a theory that Sarcean / James were childhood friends, and Sarcean was pining for him since forever. Maybe Sun King knew that and did something to make their relationship impossible, maybe 'promoted' James to position where he's not allowed to have 'boyfriends'

Sarcean and colorism
Revisiting this topic because the lack of nuance has always bothered me, and there have been recent discussions about race in Dark Rise in my server, particularly how people in Western societies (especially the US) often struggle to understand racial dynamics beyond their own cultural constructs of race.
For example, they tend to interpret "mixed" as "multiracial" rather than "multiethnic." When I say I'm "mixed Asian," they automatically assume it means mixed with white. But no—you can still be 100% Asian and come from mixed ethnic backgrounds.
Now, onto the main topic.
I previously mentioned that Sarcean is "discriminated against for his coloring" in the Sun Kingdom, which is clearly an allegory for colorism. This has been laughed at and mocked by some as impossible because Sarcean was a "white guy," with suggestions to "focus on Violet’s real-world racism" instead.
But is that really accurate?
C.S. Pacat is a member of ethnic minority who has openly shared how their experiences as an ethnic minority in Australia have heavily influenced his work, with these themes appearing frequently in his characters and their political dynamics. Damen in Captive Prince embodies this experience, so would it be so surprising if Pacat infused similar qualities into Sarcean??
(Since I'm not part of that ethnic group, and the term could be considered a slur, I'll refer to it here as "Pacat's ethnic group".)
Tumblr media
(You can read more about the discrimination faced by others of Pacat’s ethnic group in this compiled post)
So, yes, I believe Sarcean shares the same ethnicity as Pacat’s.
It's no groundbreaking news. Main characters share identities with their Authors all the time. While I believe readers are free to interpret his ethnicity in a way that resonates with them—that’s Pacat's intention, to make them relatable—this is the closest reference we have in terms of "canon".
In the US, he might be labeled as "white," but in regions with different racial dynamics—like Australia or the Sun Kingdom for example—he could be considered an ethnic minority.
Many other readers, like myself, may not belong to this ethnic group but have had similar experiences of colorism as an ethnic minority in our own societies.
Claiming that only one form of racism matters is bigoted.
People can still face discrimination from others within their own “race,” and even from family members based on our skin, hair or eye color. Just because you don’t personally experience it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. And just because it’s not common in your country or society doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist elsewhere.
Yes, there are people like Violet, who experience racism from the imperialistic colonizers who enslave her people. But there are also people like Sarcean, who experience colorism from peers of their own race, because their colorings don't fit to what is seen as "ideal".
By dismissing this allegory as "Sarcean was disliked for being goth," you’re disregarding the real experiences of people who face colorism and find resonance in that passage because of their own lived experiences.
By implying that, you're missing the whole point of C.S. Pacat's works.
Laughing at it “like a hyena” doesn’t make you look insightful or intellectual—it only makes you a bigot.

I was reading this post abt Rassalon and suddenly a thought came to me...
What if Anharion's smear campaign with the collar only came after Rassalon betrays the Light? Anharion was the light's top dog for fighting Sarcean. Outrage was had, I'm sure, when he defected. It was a regrettable decision, but human nature betrays... he was great but it was just the One guy.
But then Rassalon, a strong and loyal champion of the light, a True Lion, defects to Sarcean too??? Like, there must be some gen public who goes, hmm, is it just a coincidence or was there something more to this Light vs Dark business?? If I had a nickel for ever Light champion defecting to the Dark, I'd have two nickels but its weird it happened twice...
So the Light side either create or twist the Collar rumor into one that serves them... though it was done too late or they noticed too late that the Collar in Sarceans hand is different than what they know (my theory abt the Collar is its somewhat true to its purpose but the Sun King was the one who comissioned it).
IK there's still a lot of things that doesnt really fit, but it was my limited speculation and my two cents. What do you guys think??? Please reply if you have theories abt Rassalon or the Collar!!!

“One Steward must survive. You must get word to the Hall of the Stewards. And if we fail to hold back the darkness of Undahar, you must Call for the King.” - Ouxanas
————
“The Stewards cannot do this alone.
We must gather the old allies.
We must Call for the King” - Marcus
Some more quotes supporting the return of a “Light king”. Will asked Grace to lead the crew if something happened to him. She knows the steward protocols and to “call for the King” in book 3.
