Black Bean Veggie Burgers
Balancing flavor and freezability was my goal when developing a homemade black bean burger, and I succeeded with this recipe. Learn to make Black Bean Veggie Burgers.
Like many homemade versions of popular prepackaged foods, veggie burgers can taste exponentially better when mixed from fresh ingredients than pulled from a grocery store’s freezer section. Unfortunately, scratch-made versions often underperform their commercial counterparts when it comes to structure. As I note this week in my Twice as Tasty column for the Flathead Beacon, I’ve eaten many…

cant stop thinking about danny fenton DST mod. sketchdump time
mod concept/rambling under the cut:
Danny Fenton
The Half-Ghost
Favorite food: Veggie Burger (despite the name, this is actually considered a meat item. both sam and tucker would be willing to eat this!)
200 Health | 175 Hunger | 120 Sanity
PERKS:
Is a ghost... sometimes [neutral to ghosts, innate cold resist, human + ghost form]
Human food only feeds half of him [.5x stat gain from food + need for ectoplasm]
Has obsessions to fulfill [increased attack/defense when allies are nearby, decreased stats when no allies, loses sanity/other consequence if allies die]
Has a deadly weakness to electricity [increased damage+sanity loss from lightning, electric damage] ...also damaged by proximity to evil flowers, but this will apply to ALL ghosts, not just danny
ABILITIES:
Transforms into his ghost half by alt-clicking himself.
can fly over/walk through obstacles (ignores collision)
increased damage/defense & increased hunger drain, constant sanity drain
ghost-like sanity drain aura (applies to nearby players except Wendy)
is a "monster" (attacked by pigmen, bunnymen, catcoons, etc)
takes more damage from electricity + evil flowers than his human form. (maybe also increased damage from magic/shadows/planar attacks?)
Cannot talk in ghost form. Uses incomprehensible language instead (either "OooOOOoo" like DST ghosts or made up ghostspeak)
Can shoot ectoblasts by alt-clicking enemies. Costs hunger per use. Usable in both forms, but deals more damage in ghost form.
maybe has a small chance to freeze enemies, with increased chance in winter?
If Danny dies, he leaves his human corpse behind (instead of a skeleton) and is stuck in ghost mode.
Permanently insane, -90% max HP. Corpse needs to be revived with a telltale heart [or some other item] (revives with no health penalty).
If killed again, corpse is replaced with a skeleton and danny becomes a "normal" DST ghost. When reviving using vanilla methods, has a bigger health penalty + sanity loss.
ITEMS/MOBS:
ECTOPLASM. Periodically spawned by ghosts & pipspooks. Chance drop on a ghost's death.
Danny needs to eat ectoplasm regularly or he gradually gets weaker [or some other consequence here].
Can be given to ghosts to make them temporary allies [Danny only]
DOG TOY. Temporarily spawns CUJO.
limited "loyalty" (spawn time) but can be fed ectoplasm to keep him around longer
immortal/can't be killed, loses loyalty instead
can walk on water (ignores collision)
"gets big" whenever danny is attacked. will attack all nearby mobs (even if not aggressive) for a certain amount of time before shrinking again
BLOB GHOSTS. passive mob/won't attack.
either spawn near headstones or around ectoplasm left on the ground
“prey” animals like rabbits (will run away from scary creatures & players, excluding danny/other ghosts)
automatically start following danny whenever he's near + grant him small sanity gain
will periodically spawn ectoplasm on the ground (higher rate than regular ghosts) OR passively restore danny’s ectoplasm meter based on proximity
ectoplasm is guaranteed drop on death (but why would you kill them you monster 🙁🙁🙁🙁)
despawns after a couple days
other potential items/perks:
ectoplasm tracker- points towards ectoplasm/ectoplasm sources on the map. or maybe cujo can track it instead?
fenton thermos- holds ectoplasm and/or ghosts in storage slots?
Other things I'm less certain on:
if ghost form has higher hunger drain, should it also drain the ectoplasm meter faster?
want something to imply that ghosts are emotional creatures/danny's strength is tied to his emotions somehow, but "growing weaker/stronger at low sanity" is an overused perk. maybe he takes increased damage at low sanity?
maybe some other protection based perks idk
maybe his human form should be weaker than average, to encourage gathering/etc in human form, and combat in ghost form?
ok its that it byeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
#danny phantom#danny fenton#cujo#blob ghosts#don't starve together#don't starve#mod#big cujo looks weird but thats probably the best i can do without going wildly off base U_U#unfortunately large DST mobs tend to be ugly as hell#id love to hear what ppl think abt him<3 again i rly dont have the free time to make this any time soon but i WANT to . so. maybe one day!

My recommendations for GF staples in Australia (likely available in NZ/Aotearoa & some are global brands).
I wrote this out the other day for a GF group I’m in but thought it’d help to share here too. After a year of trail & error, these are most of my favourite gluten free staples for main meals. I really wanted a list like this when I started out gluten free, so hope it helps someone else.
Pasta- San Remo, I really couldn’t stomach anything else. Look for pastas with corn/maize as a main ingredient & rice low in ingredients or not there.
Latina fresh is almost imperceptibly different to gluten too. Thats a fresh pasta. When I was struggling the most with the transition, Latina fresh helped when trying to make a meal made me cry.
Gnocchi- Simply wize.
Bread- buy from your local gluten free bakery. We try to convince ourselves that supermarket bread is fine when it’s not. The fact that no one will eat it not toasted says enough. It’s also safer to freeze as supermarket bread arrives to them frozen & it’s defrosted on the shelves. It also means they risk mould. So you save money that way.
Pizza base - Senza for proper pizza. Bfree mini pita for pita bread bases.
Tortillas- Old El Paso. These are the softest, most flexible & most resilient to tears. They tear less than gluten ones in my experience. They do have the weird gluten free/tapioca smell but when they’re piled with filling you won’t notice. If you’ve tried them before & didn’t like them, try them again. They’ve change their formula in the last year or so apparently.
Noodles- Mr. Chens vermicelli rice noodles, but I’m sure any rice noodle would be fine as they’re naturally gf. If you’re adventurous & want to make your own 2 minute noodles, these would be perfect too because they’re divided up into 5 ‘chunks’ in the packet.
Other bits & pieces;
Crackers - Orgran quinoa wafers. The Ob ones are great too but harder than the orgran ones & I get so fed up with gluten free food being so hard. Simply wise do lots of crackers.
Crumpets - liberate. Check for mould, the supermarket defrosting on the shelf is BS. But these can be refrozen. If you like soft, squishy crumpets with the the back a little crunchy, these are your crumpets. The genius ones as disgusting & hard & crumble. Some people like them, I don’t think we ate the same gluten ones tbh 😂.
Arnotts Tim tams couldn’t have turned out much more perfectly.
Choc chip biscuits is from the ultimate brand at Coles. Also the Coles ‘I’m free from’ bars.
Master foods sweat chilli sauce, the kids one in the orange squeeze bottle.
Aldi do gluten free wedges & bubble & squeak.
V2 meat alternatives are gluten free & great.
Everything from yumi (falafels, veggie balls, veggie burgers (though they need extra sauce, bit dry), dip) is gluten free & great.
Fry family meat free nuggets are gf & good, but nothing else from that brand is gf.
Cc’s & most corn chips (not Doritos), Cheezels, skittles, twirls & flakes are all GF & no ‘may contains’.
My biggest tip starting out is to use the Woolies app. They have a really good filter for gluten free foods. It makes shopping less overwhelming knowing things you can get without scouring every packet in the store. The coles app is rubbish for this, so even if you shop there, try the Woolies app. Each store stocks things the other doesn’t, but it’s a starting point.
Also trust labels. You don’t need to know what all the weird flavours, colours & preservatives are. They will state beside them, if they contain a gluten source. Keep an eye out for barley malt.

I'll want to break down the chicken and beef into pre-marinaded freezer baggies with any roots or beans or sauces paired with them in a lil bundle of baggies, that way meals become as simple as popping a baggie set into a cast iron in the oven or on the stove. The last of the current priority garden, home, and body ingredients are in the mail, and I'm just waiting until I have the last of my salts and amino acids to mix them up.
Upcoming projects:
1) add compost cultivator to The Stacks now that there is a sizeable hay patch and an existing decomposition culture to support
2) Start tree seed trays (wild plum and black cherry)
3) Start greens seed trays (amaranth, turnip, beet, collard)
4) start shrub seed trays (Alleghany blueberry)
5) start wildflower seed trays (flax, marshmallow)
6) bury seed trays in coco coir and compost when The Stacks are fully decomposed
7) infuse olive oil with shea butter cubes, resins, cracked seeds, and salts in pourable cruets
8) break down chicken and beef into ready-prep single meal and bulk meal portions and freeze (burger/meatloaf mix, chili mix, carne asada, carne criolo, buttermilk chicken for battered cutlets, pulled chicken and ranch for pizza root-fries, kung pao chicken, green curry chicken, pulled chicken for matzoh soup, meatballs, lemon garlic chicken, ground beef crumbles, Date Night Steaks, sliced roast beef packets, jerky, BBQ for beans, dumpling filling, seasoned battered chicken for fried chicken strips and cheesy chicken pasta/veggie-noodle lasagnas, etc)
9) sauce tomatoes and freeze
10) bake a round of washing soda
11) ferment some rice for washing cakes and scalp scrubs
12) mix laundry detergent (epsom salts, resin infused oils, seed infused oils, washing soda, hand soap)
13) mix body scrubs
14) mix and set washing cakes
15) mix and jar scalp scrubs

Just curious what you typically feed your dubia? Or other roaches you may or may not use/keep?
We have red runners as our bread and butter, but also keep and sell dubia, lobsters, hissers, orange heads, and two small colonies of peppered and dead head roaches. We used to have lil black Kenyans and some sort of discoid too but they’re gone now.
All of them p much eat the same diet of organic chick starter feed mixed with dry cat or dog food, and occasionally a mix of things like bee pollen, fish flakes, dried mealworms, freeze dried peas, calcium powder, cornmeal, oats, repashy bug burger or similar, and even gecko powder. I only do that as a treat, or if we’re low on sometning else tho. In a bind I’ve even fed them yeast and spring tail powder.
They get water beads, very similar to non toxic orbeez, as their water source, as well as cut fruits and veggies. Ideally organic but that’s not always possible. I wash them in vingar, warm water, kosher salt, and baking soda mixed together, then they get brushed and rinsed. We used to peel them too but it takes too long.
The main veggies are carrot, sweet potato, zucchini, summer squash, bell peppers, beets, and a chopped leafy green like collards or kale or beet greens. The fruits are apples and oranges, but pears also work well. I try to avoid wetter vegetables like. Well I guess it’s a fruit, like tomatoes, or squishy things like grapes and banana, but they do love them. Any squash, tuber, whatever will do. I mean. Honestly I don’t know of a grown food that’s not recommended save for the fly or mold issue. I would avoid anything too acidic obviously like lemon or even grapefruit but other than that, go crazy. They just tend to mold or garner flies. But if they’re on heat (90F is ideal for breeding for red runners) then the wet foods will dry and desiccate quickly.
In addition to all of this I add pellets of dried, rehydrated alfalfa to the wet food. The roaches go nuts for it and try to lay their ooths in it, which is great bc when it dries I can collect them and sift it all out easier, and then throw remaining chick feed and dried alfalfa get put into the bin that they’ll eventually hatch out into, so that they can eat it.
Some species are kept in closed but ventilated bins, like the hissers and lobsters. You have to line the tops of the bins with food grade lubricant otherwise they’ll climb on the lid or try to get out out. Lobsters mostly get dry food and water beads bc of this, otherwise it molds quickly and attracts fruit flies. The hissers love fruit and dry food but don’t get water beads. Usually I just mist their enclosure. Other species we keep in open bins, and they get the whole shebang. If they’re on substrate it helps to keep springtails and dwarf white isopods in there so they can clean up excess. I’d recommend keeping almost every species on substrate save maybe red runners, and depending on how you have your dubia set up, possibly them. But they do seem to benefit from it more than not. We have a ton of dermestid beetles that do this in the other bins, such as the red runners, but they’re annoying as fuck and can and will wipe out a colony bc they tend to feast on the hatchlings and teneral roaches, esp if the lid is kept on.
Orange heads are incredibly carnivorous and protein motivated to the point that they regularly eat their own newly molted roaches, or at least chew the wings off of each other. They’re a bitch to keep bc of how hardy and prolific they are so it’s difficult to avoid at a certain colony size. Culls aren’t even necessary bc they basically do it for you.
But, if you feed them enough they’ll continue to breed to the point of absurdity. They love wet cat food and literally anything I drop in there. They could clean a thawed frozen feeder rat in minutes, and never have dermestids or any hitchhiking red runners (who are great at sneaking into the other bins. Actually any climbing or flighted roach is, even those that flutter, because they’ll jump the gap. Red runner males instinctually want to wander, up to 20 ft from their colony to search for food and water. They bring it back to the females and young, but even when foods available they prefer to try and come and go for breeding purposes. Dubia are somewhat similar, bc the males are mildly territorial and the females bully the fuck out of them. Actually all females we keep bully the males. I think that’s sortve a standard in arthropods tbh but I could be wrong) .) bc they just fucking eat them. They’re insane and smell bad and I’m coming to hate them bc it’s a regular site to see a teneral, newly matured roach being fucked and eaten at the same time. I hate it. They also cannot be sated. Their thirst is literally unquenchable. They’re the TRUE cockroach of cockroaches in terms of being voracious, prolific, and difficult to kill via pesticides, disease, starvation, dehydration, etc etc. they love to bite and have barbed legs which will scare you, and secrete a gross smelling fluid when scared. They burrow too, and are hard, so idk why anyone keeps them as feeders, or pets. Mostly likely roach to fight back and hurt/kill whatever you’re feeding if it happens to be a wimp or molting. They also give ‘live births’ (read: the ootheca hatches inside them and the baby’s emerge internally) so if you drop a pregnant one into a spiders enclosure you might have a bunch of shithead baby orange heads appear, even if the spider manages to bite and hold onto the roach. At least with dubia they’re sad little baby cows and can’t really do much to harm your spider.
Red runners aren’t as bad but will also occasionally resort to eating their own if they’re really hungry, and have been known to eat spiders if they’re larger than them, or if the spider is premolt/molting.
Lobsters will eat carboard given the chance. Dubia as well, but they love the veggies and dry food. They all love oranges but esp orange heads, dubia, and hissers. Dubia actually become more prolific on oranges and afaik we don’t know why. I’d hazard other species do as well honestly.
Sorry that was a long answer but I’m always delighted to talk about my roach husbandry, or just how I care for insects in general!

Slim Pickins
9/1/24
Ever seen those reels or tik toks that tell you to run to the dollar tree?
Ya'll. Is dollar tree sponsoring just an epic shitton of those videos?
Because I was just there and it was terrible. It was the last of the 3 stores in my vicinity that I hadn't visited yet.
So you know I have some some hauls there before, on the hunt for some healthy shit. Pickles, banana peppers, a hidden gem here and there (True North 4 packs, iykyk).
It is barely worth mentioning today. I did pick up some sf hard 🍬 candies & some little bags of Russell Stover sf chocolates (portion control). The only other notable item was a couple cans of G Fuel. And consumer alert- watch the caffeine content in those. Idk if they all are, but some are 300 MG caffeine.
What else did I get? A 6 pack of pretzels. Again, small bags = portion control. Especially for me with carbs. My activity level is pretty high tho so I am trying to give myself on watching the carbs but.... I am starting to think I have a gluten intolerance from some recent lab work.
I got some drink mixes too, but I am pretty sure they are cheaper at walmart. (Confirmed- $1.08 vs 1.25)
Sf Cherry jello 🍒 4 pack
Some coffee. Jim Beam Bourbon Vanilla small bag.
Green tea.
But I swear I looked for some things that people keep saying to run to the dollar tree for ...and didn't find shit. No fun lotions. No quantity of health food.
You also have to watch out because at $1.25 some items are cheaper at walmart, or in packages too small to be a deal. See the drink packs above and the tuna and salmon below.
I did see a pack of freeze dried strawberries and 1 other freezer dried fruit. But the price point on that should be ... a 6 pack like the pretzels or at least a 3 pack. It was a 1 serving bag.
This time, I knew to pass on the tuna & salmon, spices, and certain other staples. They did have nuts but I passed on those because I have some already and too many nuts can make a deficit become a surplus really fucking fast. And I have been plateaued for a bit now.
The plus side is that the store was well kept and maintained, and it was busy so you know product turn over was high.
I remarked on the store being busy and the cashier said, "Yeah, we are always busy the first of the month." That broke my heart a little because the food picks were pretty damn sparse and like I stated earlier- cheaper elsewhere. If people are on food benefits, those little cents add up and it might mean they don't have transportation to Walmart or a grocery store.
I picked up a couple cans of spaghetti sauce, turkey gravy, & white cheese sauce. I thought about getting some pepper stir fry- which I think is a good price still 🤔 but I think my freezers are full right now.
Alot of their other freezer stuff was .... just pre packaged garbage. I think the pepper stir fry was the only vegetable in sight.
Sometimes saving money means not buying stuff at dollar tree even though all those influencers are highlighting their products. If it isn't a good deal and won't save you time or actual money, it's ok to pass. It's OK to walk to the dollar tree. And be skeptical. Price check.
Also beware of items that have higher prices. I think the reason I used to like them is because I didn't have to think about the price so much just see and grab. But that is when everything was a $1, before the 25% price hike. 🤔 but now they have $3 items and $5 items. Be skeptical!
An example of a time/energy/diet saver is when you are in desperate need of lunch and you are in a sea of fast food places. You see a dollar tree and boom, you could be saved: A jar of pickles, a pack of tuna = $2.50. Spring for a beverage for 3.75 total... that is still beating out most fast food places for a meal... or some of them even a plain ass little burger. Idk about ya'll but without a veggie just a burger doesn't really satisfy me right now.
An "I'm craving something sweet" could be those freeze-dried fruit packs or sf jello, a beef jerky & a beverage. It's totally worth it if it stops you from going into a different store and being inundated by all the various high calorie prepacked garbage.

hi !!! i saw ur post and the best advice i give you is to get into meal prepping!!! its seriously one of the best things you can do for yourself if you live alone and have to cook every day. theres more than one way to do this too, you can meal prep whole meals by marinating proteins and freezing them to use later in the week, or you can meal prep ingredients by pre-washing veggies and mincing tons of garlic/ginger/etc and storing them to make cooking later way easier!! you'd just need to dedicated 1 full day or 2 half days to meal prep for the week but once its done it makes things sm easier!
also, i always ALWAYS cook things in big batches to last me maybe 2-3 meals, just in case im dead tired the next day and have no energy to do anything but throw something in the microwave. and if you end up not wanting to eat that specific thing the next day, you can always freeze that too for later use :3. your freezer is going to be your best friend. theres tons of guides and recipes you can find online for easy ways to meal prep. it can get overwhelming bc of the many options but its best to just pick 3-ish very different dishes (flavor wise) and make big batches of them and then store and alternate throughout the days.
another huge tip is dont be afraid of frozen foods, if your budget allows then buying some frozen burgers or nuggets or whatever you fancy can honestly be a lifesaver in emergencies too (usually if im going through an episode or period of fatigue, those come in really handy for me).
and sometimes if i have literally nothing prepped in my fridge ill just take 1 protein 1 carb and whatever veggies i might have and throw it on a pan with some sauces/seasoning. if i dont have a protein/carb/veg i just leave it out and load on whatever i do have in the fridge. and if all else fails, snacking is always an option.
and even if you've done all of this, sometimes you might not have the energy to even get up from bed or entertain the thought of eating, and thats okay. theres no shame in skipping a meal here and there, theres been many a times that ive simply skipped meals because of decision paralysis trying to figure out what to eat. adulting is extremely hard!!! and stressful!!! we're all just bumbling along trying to figure it out.
im sorry this got so long, but i hope this was helpful in some way! if you dont have anything you can make for tonight then at least have a few snacks before bed, some sustenance is always better than none ^^ take care!! 🩷
thank you lovie for taking the time out of your day to send this ask! i appreciate it so so so much! it is very helpful and i’m gonna try and do some meal prepping 🩷 i hope you’re having a wonderful day!!
#with love.#from. anon#i did end up having a snack last night !!#was just very overwhelmed with well everything lol#so thank you again

MEXICAN GREEN CHILI VEGGIE BURGERS
PREP TIME 10 mins COOK TIME 20 mins TOTAL TIME 30 mins Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS BURGERS 2 shallots, minced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 15-ounce (425 g) can chickpeas, rinsed + thoroughly drained 1-2 Tbsp (15-30 ml) grape seed or avocado oil + more for cooking shallot/burgers 1 4-ounce (114 g) can mild green chiles (more for topping if desired) 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp chili powder 1 lime, juiced (~3 Tbsp or 45 ml) 1 handful (~1/4 cup) fresh cilantro, finely chopped (optional) + more for serving 1/2 cup (70 g) finely crushed yellow tortilla chips (or sub breadcrumbs) Sea salt and pepper to taste (~1/4 tsp each) 2 tsp (6 g) coconut or cane sugar (optional | to offset + enhance the heat of the green chilies)
FOR SERVING / TOPPING (optional) Salsa or green chiles Ripe Avocado Red Onion Cilantro Buns, toasted*
INSTRUCTIONS Heat a large skillet over medium heat (and preheat oven to 375 degrees for a firmer burger). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or leave bare. Once skillet is hot, add 1 Tbsp oil, onion and garlic. Sauté, stirring frequently, until soft and translucent - about 1-2 minutes. Add garlic and shallot directly to a mixing bowl. Then add drained chickpeas and use a fork or pastry cutter to mash/mix. A little texture is OK, but you only want a few whole chickpeas remaining. Add remaining ingredients, including 1-2 Tbsp oil, and stir/mash to combine. You want it to form into a moldable “dough.” Add more oil or lime juice if too dry, or more crushed chips if too wet. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Divide into 4 even patties (see photo). To help form them, line a 1/2 cup measuring cup with plastic wrap and scoop out 1/2 cup amounts (use a 1/4 cup measuring cup for 8 smaller burgers). Press to pack, then lift out and slightly flatten with hands. Heat the same skillet you used earlier to medium heat. Once hot, add enough oil to form a thin layer on the bottom of your skillet, then add only as many burgers as will fit comfortably. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, flipping gently, and reducing heat if browning too quickly. You can either serve your burgers as is, or pop them on a baking sheet and bake in a 375 degree oven for an additional 15-20 minutes or more to dry/crisp them up. However, they’re great as is! The longer you bake them, the drier/firmer they’ll become. Let cool for 2-3 minutes before serving (they’ll firm up as they cool). To serve, lay down cilantro on bottom half of a toasted bun. Then top with burger, onion, salsa or green chilies, avocado or any other desired toppings. Leftover burgers will keep in the fridge for up to a few days, though best when fresh. See notes for freezing.
NOTES * To freeze, brown burgers on either side as instructed. Then cool, separate between layers of parchment paper, and seal in a freezer-safe bag or container. Question for Eli:
How is the food there? It looks like a lot of it is already familiar to you, but have you also tried any weird food like insects or other “predator” food?
Eli: "I was a little weirded out when I tried my first Bugburga Burger... but it was so good! And Dad makes THE BEST grilled lemon pepper chicken! He and Grampa Robert and Uncle Finn like to have a barbecue every week! And the salads mom makes with the veggies grown on Grandma and Grampa Bonnie and Stu's farm tastes so much better than the canned and freeze-dried vegetables we would be given back at the children's center! Mom even came up with the idea that we'd try new dishes from other parts of the world once a week too."
Blushes and rubs the back of his head.
Eli: "Sorry... guess I got a little too excited. It's just Mom and Dad are both working on a couple separate curry dishes. Dad's having some chicken in his, and Mom's just being all vegetarian... and it all just smells so good!"

Headline: Ditch the Junk: Why Raw or Frozen Veggies Trump a Fast Food Diet
Byline: Gemini Advanced for ABC News Radio Brisbane
It's 7:58 AM, and the smell of bacon and eggs is wafting through your kitchen. But as you reach for that greasy sausage, consider this: a growing body of evidence suggests that a diet rich in raw or frozen vegetables offers significant health advantages over a diet laden with junk food, meat, and deep-fried delights.
While a juicy burger or crispy fries might offer momentary satisfaction, they lack the vital nutrients your body craves to function optimally. In contrast, vegetables, whether enjoyed fresh from the garden or conveniently frozen, are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber that contribute to long-term health and well-being.
This article delves into the compelling reasons why incorporating raw or frozen vegetables into your diet is a smart choice, especially when compared to the health risks associated with a diet dominated by processed foods, excessive meat consumption, and deep-fried indulgences.
The Nutritional Powerhouses
Raw and frozen vegetables are nutritional powerhouses, offering a wide array of health benefits:
* Vitamins and Minerals: Vegetables are abundant sources of essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, K, folate, and potassium. These micronutrients play crucial roles in maintaining healthy vision, boosting immunity, supporting bone health, and regulating blood pressure.
* Fiber: Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that your body can't digest. It adds bulk to your diet, promoting feelings of fullness and aiding in digestion. A high-fiber diet can help regulate blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
* Antioxidants: Vegetables are rich in antioxidants, which are compounds that protect your cells from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. Antioxidants help reduce inflammation and may play a role in preventing chronic diseases.
Raw vs. Frozen: A Nutritional Comparison
While both raw and frozen vegetables offer impressive health benefits, there are subtle differences in their nutritional profiles:
* Raw Vegetables: Raw vegetables are often touted for their "live" enzymes, which some believe aid in digestion. However, the evidence supporting this claim is limited. Raw vegetables also retain all their water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C and B vitamins, which can be lost during the blanching process used to freeze vegetables.
* Frozen Vegetables: Frozen vegetables are typically picked at their peak ripeness and flash-frozen soon after harvest, locking in nutrients. While some water-soluble vitamins may be lost during blanching, frozen vegetables often retain comparable or even higher levels of other nutrients compared to fresh vegetables that have been stored for extended periods.
The Dangers of a Junk Food Diet
A diet high in junk food, meat, and deep-fried foods is associated with a myriad of health problems:
* Obesity: Junk foods are often high in calories, unhealthy fats, and added sugars, contributing to weight gain and obesity. Obesity increases the risk of numerous health problems, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
* Heart Disease: A diet rich in saturated and trans fats, commonly found in processed meats and deep-fried foods, can raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease.
* Type 2 Diabetes: Frequent consumption of sugary drinks and processed foods can lead to insulin resistance, a condition that precedes type 2 diabetes.
* Cancer: Some studies suggest that a diet high in processed meats and red meat may increase the risk of certain cancers, including colorectal cancer.
Making the Switch: Tips for Incorporating More Vegetables
Transitioning to a diet rich in vegetables might seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Here are some tips to get you started:
* Start Small: Begin by adding a serving of vegetables to one meal per day. Gradually increase your intake as you become more comfortable.
* Experiment with Variety: Explore different types of vegetables to find your favorites. Don't be afraid to try new recipes and cooking methods.
* Make it Convenient: Keep a supply of pre-cut or frozen vegetables on hand for quick and easy meal preparation.
* Add Vegetables to Familiar Dishes: Incorporate vegetables into your favorite dishes, such as stir-fries, soups, and pasta sauces.
* https://fdospices.com/ceylon-cinnamon
* Snack on Vegetables: Keep raw vegetables like carrots, celery, and bell peppers readily available for healthy snacks.
Conclusion
The evidence is clear: a diet rich in raw or frozen vegetables offers significant health advantages over a diet dominated by junk food, meat, and deep-fried fare. By making vegetables a staple in your diet, you can reduce your risk of chronic diseases, improve your overall health, and enhance your quality of life. So ditch the junk and embrace the vibrant world of vegetables – your body will thank you!
