ive always had the thought that dick was more afraid of other people falling rather than himself; idk if there’s canon evidence for that tho
Yeah I'd say it doesn't always have to be others physically falling though. It's also just the fear of failing others. Of not being there when he's needed, of not doing enough to save people. I do have an example of the physical sorts for you though.

have only done one at this point, but the sky portions of the labyrinths are really interesting so far.
i kinda dreaded the labyrinth shrines in botw bc they were kind of a slog unless you’re super into mazes, but the mechanics of navigating the sky ones (or this one, anyway? i’m not sure yet if they all work the same way) in totk are so interesting that it makes the maze fun.
w/ the glide set equipped especially, swapping between paragliding, skydiving, and freefalling gives a surprising amount of fine control

How Skydivers Breathe (and How to Ensure Proper Breathing)
Jumping out of an airplane for the first time while being strapped onto a tandem instructor and free-falling at a speed of 120 mph can literally take your breath away. Which then begs the question, how do skydivers breathe during skydiving?

Dick breaking the world's record in skydiving and just never telling anyone but Tim and Alfred is amazing in itself but can you imagine the comedic potential of him just casually dropping this years later like that for example with the Titans:
Someone on tv: new skydiving/freefall world's record broken.
Dick, distractingly, reviewing some cases on the side: Oh yeah, I broke that one already, the trick is to not pass out for too long.
*Crickets*
*Crickets*
*Crickets*
Wally: you did... What ?
Dick:
Tumblr media
Donna: You... Broke the world's record for skydiving, as in jumping off a plane two years ago and you never told anyone ?
Dick: Yeah. Two years ago, when Bruce went on his little time-travely trip.
*Crickets*
Roy, suddenly very tired (tm), with the deepest sigh you can imagine: Of course you did.
Garth: Wait no, what ? can we come back not passing out for too long while falling through the sky ? I think that's a pretty big part of the conversation?
In canon, because that was right before battle for the Cowl and Bruce was just dead, it was kinda one of the last things he did for himself before taking said cowl, he probably won't ever tell anyone but still, it's funny.

You need to learn how to fall 2/10
Hangster (and IceMav) - Bradley is too tall to be a naval aviator and instead becomes a sky diver, specialising in spin recovery. He is a civilian contractor to the Airforce and Navy to teach pilots how to survive parachute spins from ejections. A more in-depth version of this post.
PROLOGUE
2003-2006 – The early years
“Your son is very focused. His discipline is admirable. He’s going to go far. He’s going to be our youngest certified tandem skydiver.”
Pete’s throat works, because it’s not the first time someone has called Bradley his, but hearing someone else talk about his skill… to sound impressed not only with Bradley but also as a reflection of Pete’s own efforts. He didn’t realize he needed someone external telling him he’d done a good job, but here it is anyway.
“I’m Navy. He’s been brought up in a fairly disciplined household.”
“He mentioned that actually. He never thought about joining the service?”
                “He’s too tall.”
                “What?”
“To be a naval aviator. I’m a naval aviator.”
“Clearly didn’t get his height from you.”
“No…” Pete says dryly, doesn’t bother mentioning the convoluted relationship that he and Bradley have.
“So what, he jumps out of planes instead of flying them?”
“Oh, he can fly them too. He’s been flying since he was 14. Perk of having a whole bunch of honorary uncles willing to fly him up and getting him his flight hours. Unfortunately he can’t both pilot the plane and then jump out of it,” Pete says.
                “He’s a lucky kid.”
                Mav hopes he remains lucky.
…             …             …
It’s become second nature, either of them able to also carry out the safety checks and make sure that Bradley has definitely done everything. He never misses anything and it soothes a part of Tom, knowing Bradley takes his own health and safety seriously. There is no cutting corners or rushing through anything. They never talk about Goose, but he wonders if he thinks about his father every time he checks the stitching for wear, every time he runs his hands over the fabric and checks for tears before rolling it carefully to ensure it unfurls correctly while he’s plummeting toward the earth.
They all learn about static lines and accelerated freefall, and things have changed since he was in flight school. The materials they use now are much more durable. All of Bradley’s gifts are centered around skydiving. Tom becomes fairly knowledgeable around the entire process, another set of regulations to add to his already encyclopedic knowledge of Naval regulations. He somehow becomes friendly with a couple of the higher ups in the FAA and he becomes known around the airstrip as Ice, most people not realizing exactly who he is. He admits it to himself that he likes it, that he’s just a guy who knows a lot about planes. Added to that is the US Parachute Association and Tom has a new map in his study showing all the drop zones in the state as well as the neighboring states.
Neither of them had intended to become this involved but neither of them say anything to each other. Tom has had to check with several people about potential conflicts of interest, but it’s agreed that he is, first and foremost, a naval aviator, so if he wants to fly a private plane on his own time that’s allowable, as long as he’s meeting all the FAA regulations. The FAA make a special dispensation (his new friends doing him this favor), allowing them to sign off flight hours, but neither of them are officially instructors. They do both become FAA-certified parachute riggers though.
It’s through one guy he knows in the FAA that he acquires the hangar. It’s an old Navy one, but Pete’s been making noises about wanting to renovate a P-51 Mustang he keeps seeing for sale, but how he’s got nowhere to keep it. They could store another plane there too, Bradley’s sky-diving one in the future. It seems like it’s definitely going to happen, Bradley making a business plan and presenting it to them and asking to have his parent’s life insurance money to help him purchase a plane. Tom can give their planes a home, so he purchases the hangar and gives it to them a joint fortieth birthday gift for Mav and graduation present for Bradley.
A different plane comes into their life a little earlier than anticipated, although none of them have to buy it. Pete comes to an agreement with one of Bradley’s instructors. They’ll store the plane in their currently empty hangar in exchange for being able to use it to take Bradley up for jumps, paying for fuel and carrying out the checks and maintenance. Somehow word gets around – there are two pilots capable of signing off flight hours. They can count as solo flights as they aren’t instructors. Others wanting to jump out of planes arrange times with Bradley.
He hasn’t spent so much time in the air since flight school and he loves every moment, regardless of whether he’s piloting or doing the checks before Bradley does his jumps. His relationship with Mav has settled into an easier less-volatile thing, maybe his promotion to Rear Admiral has made him feel less threatened by the potential fallout if anyone decides to voice their concerns about his relationship with Pete.
…             …             …
“I’ve done it. The five-hundred jumps, more than three years in sky diving, done more than fifty jumps in the last year, got my medical and I’ve got more than 8 hours of freefall time logged. I can apply for the Tandem course now…”
“Proud of you. You’ve been working towards this for a long time.”
“Thank you! For taking me up and buying the hangar, and just… thank you so much. I know you and Mav both don’t really get it, but you’ve never made me feel like I didn’t have your support this entire time.”
“It’s what parents do. Good parents that is.”
He throws his arms around Ice then, hugs him tightly and doesn’t let go.
                “The best parents.”

"It makes my stomach churn!"+ Buddie
"It makes my stomach churn," Buck whines as he and Eddie wait in line for Space Mountain.
It's their first time at Disney together, and Buck had been a ball of excitement all day. They'd started off the day with some of the smaller rides, easing their way into it. Buck's never been particularly great with motion sickness - part of the reason why Eddie was skeptical about bringing him in the first place - but he'd sworn up and down that he would be fine.
Clearly, he was not fine.
Eddie pinches the bridge of his nose as he sighs.
"If it makes you feel sick then maybe we shouldn't ride it?" he suggests, perfectly aware of the answer that awaits him.
"But look how fun it looks!" Buck exclaims. The line shuffles forwards, bringing the two closer to the front and further away from the relative safety of the sidewalk.
Eddie runs a hand soothingly over the back of Buck's neck.
"Cleaning up your puke isn't fun, though," he points out. "And it's going to be even less fun if you throw up on me."
"Then I shall aim somewhere else,"
Eddie rolls his eyes but he can't hide the smile that is quirking at his lips. Buck's survived thus far, and there's a reason they've been hitting the rides before eating, but he's not exactly sure he wants to chance it.
"Alternatively, we could just call time of death on this one and go to It's a Small World instead?"
Buck quirks an eyebrow. Eddie has expressed his distaste for that song on a number of occasions, and had even banned it from the house when Buck taught Christopher all the words and terrorised the poor man with never-ending renditions. For him to suggest that as a plan of action, he must be desperate.
"Eddie, baby, I promise I'll be fine," he reassures, turning so they're facing one another and rubbing his hands over Eddie's lower arms. "Just this one ride, and then we can go do some tamer things,"
Eddie searches Buck's face for any sign that the other man is lying. He seems earnest enough, and while the nauseous look is still prominent, there is a certain determination in his eyes.
"Please," Buck adds. He leans in close to Eddie, their noses brushing, and lowers his voice to a whisper. "I'll let you fuck me in the shower when we get home,"
A thrill goes through Eddie at the thought, and he pulls Buck in for a brief, chaste kiss.
"Well why didn't you lead with that?"
Buck insists on sitting up the front, because of course he does, and Eddie's very glad he bought some of those plastic ponchos. The benches are wet, so they're going to have to change their pants as it is, but they're saved from being affected by the constant tidal waves of water that spill over the front of the log.
It's actually quite a nice ride, and Buck seems to be enjoying himself well enough. His knuckles aren't white as he holds onto the bar in front of them, and he's even got a smile on his face as he points out all the vaguely creepy animatrons on the side.
Unfortunately, it's the final big drop that proves to be his undoing.
Buck hates freefalls. Any kind of stomach drop and he's gone. It's part of the reason Eddie's never manged to convince him to go skydiving.
Buck is pale faced and tight lipped as they get off the ride, and he makes a fast beeline for the exit, Eddie losing sight of him for a moment.
He finds his boyfriend sitting on a bench not too far from the ride, lips pressed firmly together and breathing heavily through his nose.
"You good there, pal?" Eddie asks with probably a bit too much glee as he settles himself next to Buck.
Buck's jaw clenches as he swallows, and his face is so pinched and tight that it's a wonder the blood is still getting through to his cheeks.
"Just peachy,"
Eddie rubs his back in what he hopes is a soothing manner.
"You want some water or something?"
"No," Buck's answer is short and clipped. "I want to sit here and not move for a minute,"
"Okay,"
Eddie's happy to wait, really. The sun's out, it's warm and pleasant, and the park is full of interesting characters milling about. It's a good opportunity for people watching. He fishes a container of mint's out of the front of their backpack and hands it to Buck, who quickly opens it and shoves his whole nose in, deeply breathing in the minty smell.
"You know, most people eat them, rather than sniff them," Eddie comments with amusement.
"Shut up or I'll throw up on you," comes Buck's muffled response.
Eddie holds up his hands in mock surrender. "Okay, okay, I'm sorry. Sniff away."
It takes another couple of minutes for Buck's stomach to calm down, during which time Eddie counts 5 annoyed looking husbands in matching tracksuits, 7 harried mothers with large broods of unruly children, and an endless stream of excited children running around like madmen.
"Feeling better?" Eddie asks as Buck stretches out, popping a mint in his mouth.
"Much. Shall we continue?"
Eddie looks at his watch. It's getting late and honestly, both his and Buck's energy is waning. He imagines Buck will only be able to stomach one more ride before things actually go pear shaped.
He rests his hand on Buck's arm, thumb moving back and forth in soothing motions. "How about we go pick up some dinner and go home. We've still got a few more hours until Christopher gets back from Pepa's, we could watch a movie or play a game or something,."
Buck visibly relaxes at the suggestion. "That sounds like a great idea," he agrees, resting his head on Eddie's shoulder. The relief is palpable in his voice, but Eddie knows Buck would never have been the one to say enough is enough. He wouldn't want to feel as though he was subtracting from Eddie's fun.
"Come on," Eddie says as he stands, offering his hand out to Buck. "Let's go find ourselves some dinner and go home."
Buck takes the offered hand and hauls himself to his feet, leaning against Eddie's side.
"Sounds like a plan."

Enjoy Sky Blue!
Tumblr media
Quick one but ‘Freefall’ (Mag 21) has always reminded me of the album cover for ‘I Had the Blues but I Shook them Loose’ by my fav band Bombay Bicycle Club so this is like a little crossover piece for me
Tumblr media
Also their new album has a track called ‘Diving’ where the band actually went skydiving so everything’s sort of linked?

The Falling Speed of Tandem Skydiving (And How to Increase It)
Going on a tandem jump is fun-filled and scary at the same time. A tandem jump normally lasts for about six minutes including one minute of freefall and about five minutes of the canopy ride. But how fast do you fall when tandem skydiving?

Magnus Archives Relisten 21, MAG 21 Freefall
Tom Petty plays in the background as a man falls to his death
Is this too niche a joke? Not possible. MAG 21 analysis, spoilers ahead!
Facts: Statement of Moira Kelley, regarding the disappearance of her son Robert. Statement given October 20th, 2002.
Statement Notes: I have some friends with thrill seeking hobbies and I've really just been waiting for this to happen to one of them. RIP Robert Kelley but my bros are NOT built different and the sky will eat them.
The intensity of Robert's fear in this episode was so deep and profound. The way that he fell for so long that he actually wanted to hit the ground. The fact that he didn't open his parachute on time because he was so desperate to reach the ground faster. You were really able to experience and understand his emotions.
"The sky ate him" is usually the line that gets a lot of press in this episode, and for good reason. But the line that's always stuck with me is "Enjoy sky blue." It's only three words, but it says so much. The word "Enjoy" highlights the normalcy of life in the Magnus Archives universe. Rober is doing what he loves, he should be happy, he should enjoy the jump. But he won't. Fairchild won't let him. The horrors won't let him. The narrative won't let him.
But the second half of that sentence--"sky blue"--adds a whole other element. Syntactically speaking, Simon Fairchild presents it as a noun. It could be an activity or experience to Fairchild, like skydiving. It's something he does often, experiencing the thrill and horror of the fall by "sky bluing." It could be fun for him. Maybe if Robert had enjoyed the fall, Fairchild would have recruited him as an entity. It's not capitalized in the transcript, but because it is being spoken by Moira Kelley who lacks context, it's possible it is a proper noun. Could it be a place? An area the Fairchilds blip in out of and send hapless victims to, the same way the Lukases send people to the Lonely? Or is it a name? A living entity that got a taste of Robert on his first dive and decided to finish its meal on the hill?
The wind sfx in this episode is so great. I've been suspending my disbelief with the sound effects in the early episodes because I assumed they were mainly just to build ambiance for the listener, but they do have interesting implications for future episodes. If, in recording early statements, Jon begins experiencing/developing his Eye powers, then these effects (the wind in this ep, the heart beating with Julia Montauk, etc.) could be him "hearing" what the victims felt and experienced. He is looking through their eyes as he reads the statement.
Entity Alignment: Tom Petty continues playing quietly in the background
Really great Vast episode. I've never been particularly scared of heights, so I don't often find the vast episodes "scary," but I do find this one to be particularly unsettling and thrilling. The sky being presented as semi-sentient, with the ability to not only steal but eat a man makes the idea of falling through all the more terrifying.
When Moira Kelley began the statement, she explains that she "doesn't have the words" and doesn't know what to write. But of course, she explains everything in perfect detail anyway. By virtue of being in the Institute, she is compelled to tell her story. The Eye is urging her to relive the horror that she sold her home to escape. She says that "knowing won't bring him back," but the Institute doesn't care. It just wants more knowledge and fear to consume.
Character Notes: In MAG 111, Gerry explains that families are often just tools for avatars to ensure transfers of power and increase their own power. This vaguely seems to be what Fairchild is doing with Harriet, although less so. But I also wonder if the same can be said of the businesses that avatars and entities involve themselves in. According to Jon, Open Skydiving isn't a "real" company with any records, but it clearly has been operating for many years and people utilize its services. Similar circumstances seem to be true for the Magnus Institute, as well as Peter Lukas' real estate and shipping companies. They provide moderate services merely to provide funds and resources to avatars, while also functioning as mediums through which they can create more fear.
(Something something a company treating you like family means they want to use your success to increase their own status something something)
Slightly less relevant, but Robert says the jump was a charity event for Simon's deceased wife. I would love not only to know more about who Fairchild's wife was and how she died, but also what charity he could possibly be leaving any money to. "Defective parachutes for youth" "Old men against OSHA" "Wheelchair kitesurfing fund."
Slightly more relevant, but Martin!! He's back! Oh no!
The most important thing about Jon's reaction to Martin bursting in is when he shouts "What are these things?" Not only has he never seen the worms before, but he has no idea what they are. Even after reading Timothy Hodge's statement, he can't connect the worms he sees to Jane Prentiss. This is totally reasonable for any regular person, as he likely never expected to see the worms in person nor would expect Martin to burst in covered in them, but Jon isn't a regular person. At times, Elias has allowed Jon to make leaps in logic that lead him to the actual truth as a means of hiding his Eye powers. Elias wants Jon to know things he shouldn't, but only on his schedule. Jon needs to explore Prentiss more deeply so he will be marked for the ritual, so he's rationing information.

Hear me out, Band of Brothers AU where Easy Company is the name of a Skydiving facility that offers experiences in both indoor and general skydiving.
Like there are all different levels of skydiving instructors for both indoor and outdoor skydiving, some instructors specialize in different experience levels such as training first-timers or accompanying individuals who are working towards their license. I can totally see some of the people who work the indoor skydiving side of the facility being not at all a fan of outdoor skydiving. All in good fun of course, but I can definitely picture some friendly indoor vs outdoor skydiving rivalry.
Doc Roe would be one of the few medical personnel they have on staff. He’s got the most jumps of the medical personnel and is pretty experienced but never actually teaches any skydiving courses. He does teach medical courses to the skydiving instructors focusing on what to do if they find themselves in some different situations, like how to help themselves or the other people they’re jumping with. Oh and Gene will kinda just tag along sometimes when they’re taking up a group like one of the boys who isn’t scared of him will notice him getting ready with them and say “tagging along, Doc?”
The company hired him mostly for insurance reasons but he really cares about making sure everyone is safe. It wasn’t a requirement that he be licensed to skydive, but the guys like having him around especially when they’re taking up first-time skydivers (not that there’s much for him to do medically while they’re in freefall). Probably mostly just sees people after they get back from their jump with stuff like altitude sickness, friction burns from harnesses that weren’t properly secured, motion sickness, a couple of broken bones maybe, of course it could always be worse but you get the point. He’s not a doctor, but definitely has some sort of EMT training. Perhaps he was an EMT but left for mental health reasons or is still an EMT on the side?
