I actually find Donna and Shaun's marriage kind of fascinating and think there's a solid middle ground to be found between the "dead relationship, full of resentment and apathy" and "ideal couple, super in love" camps. I try to give hints of that in the stuff I've been working on (expect gratuitous use of that Shaun Temple is Tired tag), but I really want to explore it a little more deeply.
There are potential consequences from Donna suddenly being a package deal with her best friend and canonical love of her life but neither immediate divorce nor a seamless transition into an alternative relationship structure feel very likely (though there's no shame in using either or dealing with it off-page if it doesn't suit the fic). I just crave some more complex, nuanced takes on them adapting to the changes in or the dissolution of the marriage.
Plus, people are sleeping on the sheer drama of: you fell in love with an amazing but troubled woman and fifteen years later she unlocks memories that fundamentally changed her as a person, including the relationship with someone she wanted to stay with forever. Oh, and the two of them are inseparable again, so you've got a brand new member of the household.
I know we appreciate Shaun's ability to just roll with stuff, but it's a major change regardless of whether you prefer platonic or romantic DoctorDonna. Like Donna being herself in all her glory is gonna make or break that marriage, no matter where their existing relationship is at. And both options have the potential to be interesting. Do they not fit together anymore, no matter how happy for her Shaun might be, or, despite some growing pains, is it as good for their relationship as it is for Donna personally? Does having the memory issue and the financial stress solved allow frustrations in the relationship to heal? Or do they find they're not as securely bound together as they thought? I do think romcom jealousy is boring but suddenly watching someone else irrefutably bring out the happiest, best version of your spouse might bring up some complicated emotions.
As an aside, the parallels between Shaun and Lee also make me a little crazy. She picked another handsome, easy going, virtually silent man who seems to defer to her the vast majority of the time. Their kid has her last name. She sits at the head of the table like a queen holding court. I love it, anything else wouldn't feel right, but I just can't stop hearing, "What does that say about me?" "Everything."

I know we love to talk about how Donna and Shaun's "A lot of husbands would worry" "Yeah but not him" exchange is reflective of 14 being extremely fruity (very true)
But I wanna talk about how that exchange reflects how open 14 and Donna are about their affection for each other, compared to 10 and Donna.
People always assumed 10 and Donna were a couple because they'd see them riffing off each other, constantly on the same wavelength, and recognise that they're two people with a very close bond. But their affection was all implicit - they never voiced or physically showed affection - so it was up for outsiders' interpretation what type of love this was.
But with 14? Him and Donna express so explicitly, both in words and physically, their care and commitment to each other. Strangers don't need to speculate, and worry can't even cross Shaun's mind, because 14 and Donna are just so open and clear about their feelings for each other that you don't need to wonder.

Hello. This is Shaun. He is my husband. I love him. He is nice. And this is the Doctor. He is the love of my life and we are friends. I carry some of his DNA and we have a child together but we are friends. He is completely obsessed with me and claims that I belong to him but we are friends.

Star gazing | 14th doctor x female! reader (part i)
Tumblr media
NO SPOILERS (okay, maybe slightly)
Pairings: 14th doctor x reader
Warning: slight spoilers, nothing major, hopefully (the meep counts as a spoiler I think)
Characters: the doctor and the reader.
Summary: after everything with the meep had finally ended, the doctor thought it was best to stay the night at the noble-temple household, slowly getting closer to y/n who reminds him so much of his late wife.
y/n sat on the roof of her goddaughters shed, staring up at the vast openness of space. It was calming, relaxing even. Just today, she had battled some evil alien by the name of meep and nearly lost the earth because of the meep.
She had also met a strange man, he was named the doctor, he knew Wilfred a long time ago and apparently he knew Donna and Sylvia as well before she came into the picture. Growing up, she had heard of a man in a blue box that could travel in space and time, she was quite the spunky kid growing up and loved everything about the stories and would attempt reenact the stories, as if she herself lived them. Her imagination was good, she could imagine anything and she could do it. That's how she got her career. She was determined.
Startled out of her thoughts, she saw the strange man in question climbing up onto the shed, struggling to steady himself, which caused the young woman to raise a brow. Once he was steady enough, he looked up and saw y/n there, and he grinned. "Oh, hell y/n, I didn't realize you were here." He lifted himself up and sat right next to her, "why haven't you gone to sleep yet? I'm sure you're exhausted from today," the doctor questioned. She bit her lip and turned away, staring up at the stars again.
"sorry, I've got lots of things on my mind, hard to sleep really." She sighed. The two were shoulder to shoulder, the silence between them was awkward or had any sort of tension. The doctor glanced her way, noticing small details, little ones that remind him so much of River. Everything she did today reminded him of River, and he couldn't explain. He nudged her.
"well, that's no good. You humans need your sleep." He joked. y/n laughed, shaking her head, her slight curls (or whatever style you have/want) bounced on top of her head.
"yeah, suppose you're right, doctor," she looked over to him, him being caught and frozen by those e/c pools of hers. "But, I just can't seem to. I mean, after everything, it's a wonder I'm still sane. That alien nearly killed me and my goddaughter and her family and almost millions of others." She pulled at her hair in frustration, before slumming, the doctor watching her closely. She glanced at him, "you know, growing up, I heard the stories of you. The amazing doctor my mum would call you, thought you were a myth." She shrugged, nudging him back.
He chuckled, "amazing, huh?" He asked, "I think I'm far from that, dear." He froze at the word he used, hoping she didn't catch it. She wasn't River. River was gone, and so were Amy and Rory.
y/n stared at him with wide eyes, before smirking, "dear? No one besides Donna or Sylvia calls me that." She gently pushed the doctor. "Don't tell me you fancy me doc," she laughed. The laugh was so familiar to him, which helped sooth his aching pain.
"no, sorry, it slipped." He admitted, "you just remind me of someone... Someone important." y/n stopped laughing, her smiled going soft.
"they must be important if little old me rinds you of them. What's their name?" She saw his face and tried to backtrack herself, "I'm sorry, you don't have to tell me --"
"no, no, it's fine." He sighed and rubbed at his eyes. "Her name was River Song... She's gone now." He said.
"well, she sounds nice, this River woman." She leaned back on her hands, her hair cascading down her shoulder, "wish I could've met her."
"yeah." He said, watching the stars alongside her, their shoulders close as her head gently leans against his shoulder. He tensed at the feeling, but soon relaxed. "Oh, I have to ask. Donna said that you were back only for a month from college. What do you study?" He asked after a beat. She got off his shoulder and beamed.
"archeology. I'm becoming an archeologist, so I can travel the world and find hidden discoveries and artifacts that have been lost in history!" She grinned. The doctor stared at her in shocked silence as she went back to watch the stars. But, River was an archeologist. Don't tell him this is the universe's way of playing a crude joke on him. "Someday doctor, I'm gonna change the world. And people will know who I am. I'll be a great archeologist, I just know it." She looked at him to see him looking at her with nervousness. "What's that look for?" She asked. He smiled at her gently.
"heh, spoilers," he chuckled. She shook her head at his weirdness and went back to the stars. What did the world have in store for him? Only time would tell, and he already knows he hasn't got any left.
note: it's a bit short, and just to clear it up River and the reader are not related. They just look similar in style and career choices, that's it.

“Hello, Jenny,” the man said. There was a strange emphasis to how he spoke such simple words – and, hang on –
Jenny sat up. “How do you know my name?” she asked suspiciously. The harmonies of the hum deepened as Laser Grid Girl also looked at the man askance.
“Oh, you might say I know your dad,” he laughed…

'Doctor Who fans have reacted with delight and emotion as David Tennant departed the show once more - but is it for good?
The Giggle saw the Fourteenth Doctor face one of his oldest and most terrifying enemies, the Toymaker, originally played by Michael Gough and this time brought to life by Neil Patrick Harris.
With the world driven mad, the Toymaker also taunted the Doctor and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), bombarding them with tricks and games.
In a shocking twist, the Fourteenth Doctor (Tennant) regenerated at the hands of the Toymaker but instead he 'bi-generated' and two Doctors were left - the Fourteenth and the new Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa).
Together, the two Doctors beat the Toymaker before having an emotional discussion of past losses with Donna and Mel Bush (Bonnie Langford).
Afterwards, the Fifteenth decided to go travelling in the TARDIS while the Fourteenth chose to stay behind with Donna and her family.
However, with the remainder of their power from defeating the Toymaker, the Fifteenth claimed their prize: a duplicate TARDIS.
As Fourteen and Fifteen said goodbye, we later saw the Fourteenth Doctor enjoying a meal with Donna, Mel, Rose Noble (Yasmin Finney), Shaun Temple (Karl Collins) and Sylvia Noble (Jacqueline King).
While the Fourteenth can still go on adventures - and likely will with an eager Rose - he plans to enjoy some downtime for now.
Now, fans have taken to social media to react to the highly emotional scenes which felt like some wonderful wish fulfillment.
One fan penned on X, formerly known as Twitter: "14th DOCTOR HAS A FAMILY! CALLING DONNA HIS SISTER AND BEST FRIEND! ROSE HIS NIECE! WILF HIS GRANDAD! SYLVIA HIS WICKED STEP MUM! SO EMOTIONAL #DoctorWho".
A different viewer wrote on X: "Imagine going back and telling those of us watching him wipe her memory in series 4 it would end like this. I am fragile #DoctorWho"
Elsewhere, on X, one fan was less impressed with the bi-generation twist, penning: "Already feel like bigeneration is something that’s never gonna sit right with me. #DoctorWho".
Finally, one Doctor Who viewer concluded on X: "14’s end was really beautiful. “I’ve never been so happy in my life.” I have some issues with bigeneration but I’m really glad to see a happy ending. #DoctorWho".
The episode marked the final instalment in the 60thN anniversary specials, which saw Tennant and Tate return together after 15 years...'

Fourteen is just gonna turn that second TARDIS into a library, isn't he? It's gonna grow weeds around the bottom as it sits there in the backyard next to Rose's TARDIS. He's gonna dig through all of his outer space logs and find the weirdest creatures in the universe and then he's gonna sprint across and shove a picture in her face and say: Hey think you can make THIS one?? And all her customers are gonna be like: WHERE do you come up with this stuff?? And she'll tell em her uncle helps.
Over time, the TARDIS will learn to chill out too, grow smaller and slower and dimmer. The Doctor will get special issues and old tomes and otherworldly pamphlets delivered to Wilf's old newsstand and he'll wheel Wilf down to collect them and get a sneaky pie while Sylvia isn't looking. Sylvia is gonna say the TARDIS is too chilly (even though she barely steps inside the thing for fear of it flitting off with her) so she's gonna bring CHAIRS and pillows and throws and cups of tea. Mostly because Rose and her Dad like to hang out in there. Definitely not for the Doctor himself. (Although he does like her tuna madras better than anyone else does, so maybe she brings him some of that. Just so it doesn't go to waste). Sean will build the Doctor a desk and a little patio around the TARDIS perimeter so he can sit outside and sun himself. And when Donna comes home from a hard day's work at UNIT, he's gonna throw thick volumes at her, saying: oh I know what that is, read this, that'll help. And Donna will be like: WHY do I gotta read a big ole book when YOU can just TELL ME what we're dealing with? And Fourteen's gonna be like: oh no, I'm retired. And I'm working on a full written history of [insert weird alien name -- probly the horsey alien thing from "Wild Blue Yonder"]. But now and again, when things get really dire, she will persuade him to come to UNIT as a consultant. The TARDIS will stay put tho, it'll just keep growing grass around the bottom and gathering leaves on top. Instead, he'll chuck Donna the keys to the car and say: You're driving (and then he'll complain about her driving the whole way as he is scrunched up against the car door because Donna now has full license from UNIT to be a hoon).

The Doctor eventually stops correcting people when they call him Dr. Noble. He doesn't encourage it and he certainly doesn't intentionally introduce himself that way, but he does grin and rock on his heels and needle Donna about it a little.
And Shaun is very Shaun about it. Unthreatened and chill and rolling with the nebulous limits of this queer alien's friendship with his wife. Dryly joking that if they weren't going to exchange names, it's fitting someone take Donna's. But something about it does prickle a tiny bit, after a while. He's not sure why and he's not sure how to approach it.
And then the fam is out one day and someone happens to call Fourteen Dr. Temple. And the Doctor still doesn't correct the person but when the interaction is over the three of them laugh so hard it brings him to tears. It loosens something, and later Shaun can mention the feeling to Donna, even as he realizes it doesn't bother him anymore.
He throws an "excuse you, Dr. Noble" in Fourteen's direction the next time he's put an empty box of cereal back in the cabinet for Shaun to find and gleefully watches them both sputter.

Rose wants to know if ghosts are real and it's not because she's developed a sudden interest in the paranormal. Donna has good reason to not want to open that particular can of worms at the dinner table. The Doctor is more than a little... lost.
prompt: Doctor/Donna, marriage
