I'm still rereading Akira Himekawa's Four Swords manga, and Shadow's character kills me inside. I mean...

"I'm serious, Vio. For the first time, I feel like I have a real friend. Someone I can trust."

...like, that's heartbreaking. Especially if you know what Vio's up to when Shadow says that.

And then after being betrayed, when Zelda shows him just a speck of kindness and understanding, he is willing to throw everything away just to save her. He's a hero, too, deep down.

He's just a kid, too.

If I had a nickel for every time a character named shadow with some kind of heavy fire association was in a heavily implied romantic relationship with a character who's name started with v who was literally the mirror half of shadow and who joined his side after a moonlit confrontation in which their morals and motives are challenged and they are compared to their shadow, only to have deceived and beat him at his own game, making the revealed-to-be-lonely shadow lash out violently before he was defeated by the result of character development, the settling of inner turmoil and holy light channelled through a goddess bestowed item....

Vio and Shadow are spending some quality time together. Vio is reading a book he's been after for a while, and Shadow is practicing his control of his magic. When Vio is done reading they are 100% going to gossip about the chain

“Shadow might not be able to picture the expression the way that Vio can, but he doesn’t need to. Frankly, he doesn’t care to. The sight before him is… Everything else falls away. The room, the heat of the lava, the coming fight, none of it matters. None of it means anything at all in comparison to Vio like that . Lounging back into a throne, legs spread in casual ease, like it was made just for him.

Shadow doesn’t think, he just moves. He moves so quickly his form flickers, and he rematerializes right before the throne.

“What do you think?” Vi asks him, smirking down.

Shadow doesn’t answer. Not in words. He just drops to his knees.

“Shadow?” Vi asks, a slight laugh to his voice”

Can someone explain to me the anatomy of Shadow's eyes?? XDDD Dude, i know you're a shapeshifter but can't you decide on the shape of eyes at least T-T

I spent around 15 minutes already trying to get it right but the more references i get the more i scream LOL his eyes make no sense

Even the eyeliner changes from panel to the other like wtf???

The closest theory i was able to make is that his eyes change depending on his mood and thoughts??? Like, uhhh... Depending on how he's feeling will his eyes be??? The eyeliner too??? Like wtf???

Trust me, the more references i give you, the more confused will you be... Just like i am rn

New headcanon unlocked: Shadow's eyes depend on his mood. The sadder the rounder (representing Red), the sharper the angrier (representing Blue), the calmer the more half lided (representing Vio), casual regular style is similar to Green. The more eyeliner there is, the stronger the feeling is. If it's anger the feeling in question, stay away! He's super angry! The amount of eyeliner can also represent the amount of Dark Magic that is present. If his eyeliner is completely gone, something is not alright with his magic! The shapes of the eyes can also mix between each other, which means that he's feeling one thing, but trying to hide it with something else. Most common is sharp eyeliner while the eyes are very round. This means that Shadow is either very sad and trying to mask it with anger, or that he's sad about someone getting hurt and is mad at himself or someone else who's responsible.

Shadow still exists

Fanfic prompt: what if after shadow died he was still sentient but trapped in four’s shadow

Not capable of moving just following

Not capable of seeing or hearing anything

Not capable of touch or smell

Trapped and quietly suffering with no mouth to scream his pain

No escape from his existence as nothing but a shadow

In pain when someone steps on the shadow four casts and just having to endure

But four never finds out about him still existing and begging for release

Assuming that his shadow is now dead and accepting it with a painful smile knowing that shadow helped with a honorable death

For years only following as a shadow and nothing more

deaf and blind with no ability to hear or understand yet feeling pain everytime someone walks over him

Not knowing why or how he is in pain when all he sees is just darkness and nothing else

Until one day time accidentally pointed the mask of truth on four's shadow and then heard an all encompassing scream

As nobody else heard it

He would think he is going insane asking the others if they heard any noise

Only to confirm whatever or not it must have been a very unsettling yet not real experience

The chain was concerned for the welfare of his while four was having a very bad feeling about time’s reaction

A really old Shadow shitpost I forgot to post here. It was funnier in my head at the time ok

Very impulsive idea:

You know how stalfos are abound in most games? This demonstrates that 1. the undead exist throughout LoZ and 2. Ganon/whatever BBEG‘s turn it is has/could have control over the dead.

Anyway.

Shadow being a former hero that failed, died and whose body/soul is being puppeted. He doesn‘t remember anything from his life before basically being Adopted For Nefarious Reasons by Ganon. Some fairies still remember a hero long ago that befriended dragons instead of fighting them and liked to scare people, but they don‘t recognize him anymore; not that they interacted all that much with him, he had help from elsewhere. For more angst, Shadow tried to have the heroes killed in all places where he almost died on his quest because he still associates them with danger.

Now the difference between Shadow and the colours isn‘t just good/evil or different sides anymore. It‘s what makes one succeed in their quest and what makes the other fail. Extra kudos if neither ever find out what that is, because there‘s actually no reason at all. Victim-of-the-circumstances kind of situation. Shadow was screwed by coincidence and that‘s the only reason why he died and landed in Ganon‘s hands to fight the next hero, deal with it. Looking for a reason is useless.

Now, if Shadow died before his BBEG, then Hyrule would either be a shitshow or non-existent anymore (think WW). So I‘m thinking he took it down with his death, which would make his sacrifice at the end of the manga a repetition. History repeats itself yadda yadda. And if his personality stays the same overall, who‘s to say he didn‘t have a self-sacrificial streak before? Maybe that‘s why he chose to break the mirror so readily despite there potentially being a way to re-seal Vaati without his death (at least if his comment to Vio about it wasn‘t just showing off)?
