Iron is traditionally held to keep fairies away. What do vexes wield? Iron swords. Perhaps a sign of their corruption from allays that iron is no longer a barrier to them and one they embrace instead. Whereas copper is the material to use when working with allays, copper and amethyst.

Allay.
Fresh souls from dying men are severed in half using profane dark magic, the malevolent and destructive components of the soul producing a Vex and the constructive and benevolent components of the soul producing an Allay. Allay are kept as pets or lab rats by the illagers, or they are warped into vex, though these are more unstable than normal ones.

Vexes and Allays
Ancient forest dwellers, probably existing since the Pioneers era. Many Allays live in the dense forests, hiding from the gaze of travelers. However, when meeting them, fairies do not show hostility, due to the fact that they rarely encountered the cruelty of other people's intentions. That's why they become a really easy target for traders and hunters
Vexes are the fairies of the Dark Forest. As with Illagers, The Dark Forest changed fairies in its own way. For their unceasing passion for hunting and fighting Evokers use them in battle mostly

Headcanon 19
It doesn't matter how many times Cub and Scar protest, the Hermits still mistreat allays on Hermitcraft, particularly after the new update when hurting them can be used for easy xp. So they decided to do stuff about it.
Every single allay-powered farm on the server has been noted, and every time they're used Cub and/or Scar rescues allays from them, brings them to a safe room they transformed into an allay haven where they're given calming music, cookies, cake, and healing. Doc particularly has gone to Xisuma several times to complain about this, and the effort it takes to find new allays. And Xisuma never does anything to stop them.
Sometimes Cub and Scar use the allay room instead of their own safe-rooms when they need to calm down, as allays naturally calm Vexlings's, and Vex's nerves.

"Cub, please, go rescue the Allays, please, we can't let them stay there, they're so distressed!"
Scar's voice was also distressed, but Cub hadn't needed to hear him to understand. It had been a long time since Cub felt that deep Vex rage well up inside him, and it was both strange and also familiar. At least he knew why he felt that way.
"I'll get them, don't worry. He's not still there, is he? He's gone to do other things?"
"He's not there, no. Just, hurry. They're so scared! We gotta get them outta there!"
"Alright, leave it with me."
-
Jevin was easily distracted, it's fair to say, and in his Vex form, Cub was able to sneak into the place where he'd kept the allays with ease. He could feel their distress as he got close, and they flew to him once he broke in, clinging to him in fear.
"Don't worry, we'll get you out of here. You'll be safe with us. The Vex will avenge you," Cub murmured, giving as much comfort as he could.
There were small sad trilling sounds coming from the Allays. Cub could see the scars on their bodies where they'd caught Jevin's sword but had somehow survived. Cub wasted no more time in whisking them away to his base, hoping he could find a way to calm them down a little. He wouldn't defeat their trauma, of course, but that wasn't the point. At least he could give them sanctuary.
-
A lot of people assume Allays and Vex are enemies. That Vex corrupt Allays into Vexes. But this isn't true. Vexes are the rage Allays can't express. When Allays seek revenge, it is deep indeed, and handed over to the Vex, who can act in ways they simply cannot. And when the rage is over, the Vex are becalmed by the sweet song of the Allays, both comforted by their own presence. That is why Allays reside in mansions and pillager camps. Anywhere the Vex are, so too are the Allays.
-
"Cub, I've left a creeper in Jevin's house! That'll sort him out!" Scar said as he arrived at Cub's base later on. He wasn't surprised to see Cub still in his Vex form. "I named it CatDog! That'll teach him to kill Allays!"
"Very good, very good. It's certainly a start, that's for sure. I think we can find other ways to torment him, though, as the season progresses. These poor Allays, man, you gotta come see them. They've got scars, it's awful," Cub said.
Scar gasped. "Scars! Oh no! How dare he! Come on, show me where they are, I gotta look after them!"
-
Cub led him down into the basement of his house and flicked a switch. It opened a hidden door that led to a staircase going down.
"They're down here. They wanted to be far, far away, so I dug a hole at bedrock, and that seemed to suffice. They were sleeping last I checked," Cub said.
"Good, I'm glad they're resting. They'll be okay, won't they?" Scar said.
"I hope so, but you never know with traumatised Allays. Sometimes it's just too much. But I'm hoping we can give them enough of an outlet so they feel okay again."
-
It was, of course, a long way down. There was some soft conversation, but both Cub and Scar felt their anxiety and rage grow the closer they got. Part of it was empathetic; they were both feeling that way anyway, but part of it was coming from the Allays as well. Eventually, they arrived at a room, with a door closing it off. The soft sounds of Allays could be heard from within, their songs still very soft and mournful.
"Just be quiet and gentle, they're really on edge," Cub murmured as he opened the door as slowly and carefully as he could.
Scar nodded and followed him in. The room was small and confined, the two Allays sleeping under a blanket on a pillow in one corner. A soul lantern in one corner offered a little light, enough to see how much dimmer the Allays were. Cub sat down beside the Allays, watching over them.
"Just sit and be quiet. They like knowing we're here. I promised we'd get revenge for them. If you want to Vex yourself up a little, I'm sure they won't mind that either," Cub said, keeping his voice low.
Scar grabbed a spare pillow and sat down. He closed his eyes a little and let his Vex features come through a little bit. Vex magic always felt more powerful when he was in Vex form. "We'll avenge them alright, don't you worry about that, little Allays. I'm still so angry! Gods. I'm a zookeeper! How dare he just kill Allays like that!"
Cub shushed him. "There's a time and a place for anger, and right now isn't it." He reached down and gently touched the Allays, who opened their eyes and sat up a little. "The Vex are here, little ones. We'll protect you. We'll avenge you."
The two Allays made soft little cries before allowing Cub and Scar to hold them. Cub held his close to his chest, offering a little Vex magic to comfort the poor creature. Scar wrapped his in a blanket and cradled them in his arms. The rage was building, and for an Allay to feel rage, well, something very bad had definitely happened to cause it.
"This is just like the one I rescued last season. The one Zed got to kill him by holding thorns armour. Man, that Allay was messed up," Cub murmured.
"I did hear about that one. I hope they're okay now."
"It took a long time, but we got there. And these guys'll get there too. And if that means we get to have a little fun along the way, well. So be it."
"So be it. Long live the Vex."
"Long live the ConVex."

another vaguely tcd related thought i've had: what if vexes only get scars when they're young? Like if they get hurt when they're adults it will heal without a trace but when they're hurt in their youth they haven't quite developed that ability yet, so it scars badly.
None of the hermits (except cub) have this information about vexes so they think all of scar's scars have just been like, accumulated over the years, but then they find out somehow and come to the horrified realization that Scar is covered in scars and they're all somehow from when he was a child.
cue explanations of his shit childhood and also much comfort <33
WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!!
I CAN MAKE IT EVEN MORE ANGSTY!!!!
What if! Vexes don't get scars at all.
Allays do. Young allays.
So you not only have the realization that Scar got hurt a lot when he was a kid- you also have the realization of the fact that Scar got corrupted.
He was an allay before hermitcraft

Wait there's aus to hhau? 👀 more than one???
-🎀
It just keeps happening ok—
I think pretty much all of them are us exploring the idea of the same setting, but Grian and Scar don’t know each other beforehand. Grian coming straight from Evo or something and Scar from early Hermitcraft. Or one au au where they both grew up on this awful server.
There’s one we call the 3L hhau au because it involves Scar rescuing Grian in a very similar way to the normal au, and then Grian swearing his life to Scar in 3rd Life fashion. He feels like he has to give back somehow. And also maybe they both want an excuse to have company.
There’s one that leans more into instincts and such, the one where they possibly grew up on this server, and Grian tries to lowkey seduce Scar into giving him a mating mark— hoping that a claim from a vex means that vex will keep him safe.
And then one were playing with right now (for fun!) where Scar is already staying at the vex commune when he finds an injured Grian in the midst of a fight against some hunters.
It’s a lot of complications about Grian feeling like he owes Scar something for all of his kindness and Scar fumbling through developing a crush on this frankly gorgeous avian and feeling like he can’t express it in fear of Grian simply going along with it out of obligation.
It’s really just a lot of me and ange going “what if?” and then absolutely running with it LOL

I would like it to be known. That the Vex, Allay, and Breeze, all look very similar.
now. I must present an obvious thing for me.
the Buttercups. One is canonically Vex -> Scar
it can be argued that Grian is Allay-like, with his lagging” of items into his inventory, along with other factors (his laugh/personality)
So Allay -> Grian
and as I saw from somebody’s post on Tumblr. Mumbo. The person said that they associate the Breeze with copper, (since the Breeze will be added with the new copper blocks among other things) and that they said Mumbo is heavily associated with copper because of his S9 bases.
to which I agree. Whole-heartedly.
Just imagine the tornado Mumbo could make if he got extremely flustered. Mumbo works quite well with this.
it’s quite simple, really, that Breeze -> Mumbo Jumbo
I think that this headcanon works really well with them.
it’s even funnier to think of the whole Perimeter vs. Bittercups now.
the great GOAT vs. three little faerie-like mischief makers.
two hostile mob hybrids one helpful/passive.
where the hostile hybrids aren’t that hostile, really, and the passive hybrid is anything but passive.
now doesn’t that sound like our silly blorbos?

There’s birds chirping outside Grian’s window as he steps into the living space of his cottage, a bowl of water in his hands and rolls of bandages floating behind him, highlighted in glowing red.
His dark eyes sweep over the two men seated on his couch, and takes in their drastically differing expressions. One of them is smiling, peaceful and content despite the scratches covering his skin. There’s a bruise on his forehead, and his arm is most definitely broken, but he looks completely unbothered by it.
The man next to him is looking off to the side, his arms are crossed over his chest, brows pressed together and sitting low on his forehead. He looks just as injured as his friend, though he appears significantly less pleased about it. There’s a tear in the sleeve of his shirt, and Grian can see the blood drying against his pale skin.
Grian pauses right in front of them, “I don’t have much medical supplies, so we’ll have to make do with these.” He gestures at the floating objects behind him.
The smiling man looks up at him and his green eyes shine pleasantly, “Oh, not at worry! The hospitality is very much appreciated!”
The bowl of water is set down on the nearby table as Grian moves to pull a stool over. He places it down right in front of the two men before sitting down himself. The bandages float over to the table and Grian motions them down with his finger. “I’ll run out to town later and grab some actual supplies,” he says, eyes trailing over to the smiling man. He quirks a brow, “What did you say your names were?”
“We didn’t,” the brooding man cuts in, voice low and terse.
Grian frowns at him as he dips the towel on his shoulder into the water. “Well then can I know them?” he snarks in reply, and the smiling man laughs.
“The name’s Scar, and my grumpy companion is Mumbo,” Scar explains. He looks at Grian with an inquisitive gaze, though there’s something else within his eyes. Grian can’t quite tell what it is, but when he looks at Scar’s eyes he feels electricity zip through him. He suppresses a shiver. Scar smiles at him, but it appears just a tad too sharp, “And what may your name be, oh kind and benevolent stranger?”
“Grian,” he answers blankly, finding himself sitting up straighter on the stool. His insides twist and curdle with Scar’s eyes on him like this, feeling as the man is trying to see something that isn’t on the surface.
“And you’re a witch?” Scar questions, and the movement is minute, the way his eyes squint ever so slightly.
Electricity crackles in the air, charging each particle and making it taste static on Grian’s tongue. It almost feels like a stand off, like Grian should choose his words carefully else a fight in his home may break out. Or his mysterious and injured guests may just show themselves out at the very doorstep they randomly appeared on.
Slowly, Grian nods, “I am.” He watches Scar’s expression carefully, noting from the corner of his eyes the way Mumbo seems to stiffen. “I don’t see how that’s relevant right now though,” he says, motioning for Scar to move closer, “your injuries are much more important.”
Much like lightning cracking in the sky, or two sparks of electricity meeting, whatever charge was building in the atmosphere around them bursts. It quickly fizzles out and disperses, leaving only weak charges of static behind.
It makes Grian relax almost immediately, the hairs on the back of his neck no longer standing on edge. His shoulders drop slightly, letting his guard fall.
Scar offers him a smile and a soft secret chuckle as he leans in, and Grian has to bring the stool closer in order to reach him the way he needs to.
He dips the towel into the bowl once again, taking Scar’s chin in his hand to move him the way he needs to. He scowls as the light just isn’t working for him and with his free hand, he takes his finger and draws a circle in the air. It glows red as it forms from his fingertip before morphing and curling in on itself, becoming a sphere of light that glows warmly. “Much better,” Grian hums before carefully dragging the soaked towel against Scar’s skin.
Silence stretches over the living room as Grian works on patching up his mysterious guests’ injuries.

Hey how come we never talk about the potential of Scar not knowing he's an Allay and thinking he's a really weird Vex, how is there not a fic that's basically the ugly duckling where Scar doesn't know why he's so weird for a Vex only to learn Allays exist? Why isn't that a thing?

I’m sorry the “Allays and vexes are friends” thing won’t ever stop my headcanon that vexes consider them a delicacy. And all the “saving” them from was like saving cattle you’re gonna eat later.
(disclaimer: I am not hating on the headcanon, the maker, or anyone who headcanons it at all. I love hearing other people's Headcanons, I have seen the original post about this and it's a really cool and interesting idea. It just doesn't fit with my headcanons for Convex)
:0
Nooooo not the allays!
Convex fans all over the world, we have a headcanon disagreement!
I already headcanons the cannibalism stuff as something the ConVex did once when possessed and Cub and Scar would be horrified if they ever heard about it (to the point of becoming a rather major plotline in one of my latest fics). So eating allays really doesn't fit with my headcanons.
But it definitely works as something other Vexlings do, (particularly the one group who agree with the Vex and already engage in cannibalism, murder and worse, and basically act possessed when they're not). And something the (possessed) ConVex tried, and probably enjoyed. Particularly ConVex!Scar.
And this is nicely contrasted with me feeling like un-possessed Scar would be horrified, upset and probably feel sick whenever people even suggest it. While Cub would just be against it personally, but resigned to accept that other Vexlings do it. So, whenever they're forced to attend a vexling-only buffet (Vexlings could never agree on a single meal everyone enjoys), Scar avoids the food benches entirely and gets Cub to find safe food for both of them. Sometimes, if there's a lot of questionable food and/or entertainment, they leave the event entirely.
I also headcanon this sort of thing being really contentious among vexlings. To the point of there being several arguments, protests and fight about the private rooms in The Summoner - the largest vex-only bar - being turned into a place for less socially-acceptable Vexling behaviour. Some think it's too generous to allow them in, and some think it's gatekeeping Vexling activity. Cub and Scar stay out of these arguments entirely.
