Aight, so let's make a quick list of most to least jealous, just so you get an idea of my very bias beliefs, I am semi willing to debate this.

1.) Sniper

9.) Heavy

Now, onto the headcanons!

Scout:

-Such a jealous baby, he can't help it

-A lot of it comes from his insecurities and also being the youngest of eight. He's used to being "the runt" of the group, even with the mercs. So he feels like he has to compete with them for your affection, even if you two are dating

-Like, someone could stand just a little too close to you and he's already starting the side eyes

-Scout, chill, for real for real

-He will attach himself to you once the jealousy kicks in. Arms wrapped around you, nuzzling up against you, it's that inner dog in him

-He will get mouthy with whoever is causing the jealousy. Talks a lot of smack for someone who is built like a damn twig. So it goes from him loving on you, to you having to prevent a fight from happening. Yes, depending on who it is, he can win the fight, he's a mercenary afterall. But when it comes to guys who have a big build like Heavy, then you'll really need to stop him

Soldier:

-Isn't really the jealous type, surprisingly. I think it comes from an oblivious stand point. Like, you need to point it out that someone's flirting with you for him to get even an increment of jealousy

-He really feels like he has nothing to worry about (which he's right). He's more than confident that you're loyal to him cause he is with you

-I feel like when you do say someone is flirting with you, he isn't gonna be violent, moreso he will make a big name and shame thing out of it (he basically did that to Miss Pauling in the comics)

-Like, "Who do you think you are flirting with MY GIRL, maggot! You are a disgrace to this country! Now drop and give me 100!"

-But that don't mean he isn't ready to throw hands. Cause he will. Homie's down to break a few necks. But if you don't want him doing that then you're gonna have to remove him from the situation

Pyro:

-I feel like they're kinda like Solider is the more oblivious aspect, but not as much. Like, they can tell when someone's flirting with you, but whether they truly care or not is up for debate

-I don't really see Pyro as a violent type when jealous. Why waste their energy on someone so insignificant to them?

-If anything, Pyro will just resort to loving all over you, more than usual. All the while giving the offending person a death stare

-It's a very effective form of intimidation

-Cause think about it, are you gonna want to fight a person wearing a flame proof suit, that isn't speaking, and is just giving you the thousand yard stare? No, you wouldn't

Demoman:

-Poor baby can be quite insecure. I feel so bad for him

-Constantly worries about not being good enough. He's so used to being beat down by the people around him that he doesn't have good self-esteem

-He will stand nearby you, waiting for you to notice him, looking like a sad and lost puppy

-Once you finally notice him, you'll have to pry him open to find out what's wrong. He doesn't like burdening you with his problems so he tends to sit and stew about everything til he bursts

-He will need to to reassure him that you aren't going anywhere and that you love him. He needs a lot of verbal reassuring cause he's a worrying lad

Heavy:

-Heavy? Jealous? Where?

-While Scout, Demo, and Sniper might be the top three most jealous, Heavy, Engie, and Spy are the least jealous

-Heavy is this big, strong bear, why would you ever wanna settle for less? Like, frfr, you'd have to have an IQ less than an orange to stoop to such lengths

-But let's play along and say that he did get jealous. One of those very rare times it happens. He knows he doesn't have to do much to make the offender leave, all he has to do is stand there

-And stare.

-And stare..

-And stare...

-He's got that resting angry face so he just has to stand behind you and exist to make people leave you alone. It's kinda funny to think about it. He'll gently take your hand and leave after that

-Why be around people when you two can be locked away in a quite room with a good book?

Engineer:

-Again, not a jealous person. But he does have his moments sometimes

-He's a confident boy and knows you wouldn't do anything. Plus have you seen him? He's an intelligent man, got such a nice voice and accent, and can build a machine to keep you safe

-When he jealous, he's passive aggressive. He doesn't like to be hostile, especially so up front, so he'll do little things to help get his point across

(Would give examples but I'm not passive agressive, I'm just aggressive, oops)

-He'd come up to you, slide an arm around you, give you a kiss on the cheek, and say how he was looking for ya while side eyeing the offender

-THAT MAN COULD USE HIS VOICE TO SEDUCE YOU ALL OVER AGAIN, FIGHT ME

-Weirdly enough, I can see him as someone who will look into the offender, find all the person's info and hand it over to Medic, basically saying "Here's someone you can harvest organs from. Have fun, Pookie."

-Then Medic and Engie proceed to make out and get married. The end

Medic:

-Medic's an interesting fellow. I feel like he's like Pyro where it all depends on his mood. Somdays, he doesn't give a shit, and other days, HE'S FUMING

-He will NOT tolerate the disrespect  >:(

-Cue sassy Medic. This man will verbally murder a bitch and I'm here for it

-Will get "handsy" with you (he'll just throw himself on top of you, maybe even make you hold him bridal style if you're strong enough)

-Will be loving all over you while verbally berating the offender. Everything is getting called out. EVERYTHING. He wants to ensure his point is made

-Buuuut, this can also be a chance to score some fresh, new organs. He's always in the market for that stuff so he can easily kidnap the offender and harvest the goods. And no, you can't talk him out of it. Once his mind is made up, nothing can stop him

Sniper:

-Oh my poor baby boy. Where do I even begin with you?

-Sniper can't help but get so jealous so easily. He's never been one to have relationships with people so when he is in one, he gets so insecure at times

-Worries he's not good enough at times. He know he's a "quirky" individual, so he worries you'll want to be with someone who's more "normal"

-Will stand nearby, giving the offender dirty looks. They can feel the daggers that Sniper is giving them, it's enough to make them leave

-Afterwards, he'll pull you away from everyone and be all over you

-While Demo needs verbal reassurance, Sniper needs physical reassurance. So please love on him and tell him it's gonna be okay and that you love him and only him

-But I can also see him needing to prove that he's better than any guy through "fun" means (Medic would too but I forgot to add it. They both horny jealous people)

Spy:

-Again, not a jealous person, and rightfully so

-We all know how suave this man is. He can pull anyone and everyone without even trying

-But I'm sure even Spy has his own moments when he feels a slight bit of jealousy

- He'd be so pissy with the offender. Like, fuck you, pal. That's MY partner

-Welp, time to go over there and seduce you all over again, which isn't hard for him to do. He's got that magic in him, ya know? He;s a man who knows what words to say and what moves to make. He'd make the offender jealous that they couldn't be with Spy

Big E.G.O. analysis post incoming

Something I’ve noticed in Limbus is how ego tend to push sinners into specific roles; the one that stick out to me the most is how Rodion and Faust feel like they always end up as the designated healers off of how they both have multiple healing ego without any real alternatives. I started wondering if this spoke to their characters at all, but that raised another question: are there other trends in which sinner gets which type of ego beyond just healing? To figure this out, I broke up the ego into 4 categories:

1. HP/SP Healing - This one should be mostly self explanatory, though I should specify that this is specifically for team healing as opposed to self-healing (ignore Lantern Gregor; it’s only here because it has literally no other text). I’ll also be noting how many of those ego heal HP and SP respectively, since I think it’s worth noting even though I’m combining them into one category.

2. Buff/Debuff Support - This is for the ego that apply debuffs or buffs to enemies and allies beyond the 7 main status effects; while some of these ego might have a status as well, if their main purpose is other forms of buffing or debuffing then they go here.

3. Status Support - This is for the ego that specifically support the main 7 status archetypes; while they can do some damage, if their main purpose is usually to directly support the status then they’ll end up here. This is also going to end up as kind of a wastebasket category for most of the ego that apply a status but don’t really do anything else well enough to fit into any other categories, so a bias towards this category is a bit less meaningful than the others.

4. Damage Dealers - These ego do a significant amount damage (at least relative to their cost). Most of them will have some status tied to them, but that’s not really their main purpose; if they wind up in this category, it’s because they deal a noteworthy amount of damage.

There are a lot of ego that fit multiple categories (Blind Obsession Ishmael is going to fucking murder me), so although I’ll try and narrow them down to whatever fits best, the ego that fit multiple categories too well to make decision one way or the other will be present in both categories; for example, Everlasting Faust is going in both status support and damage dealing.

I’m also going to give my own personal analysis of what each sinner’s ego spread could mean for them; these analyses are just going to be my personal thoughts and are probably heavily influenced by confirmation bias towards how I already view each sinner, so take them with a grain of salt as proper character breakdowns. With that said, let’s finally begin with:

Yi Sang

HP/ SP Healing - 0

Buff/Debuff Support - 3 (Crow’s Eye View, Wishing Cairn, Sunshower)

Status Support - 2 (Fourth Match Flame, Bygone Days)

Damage Dealers - 2 (Dimension Shredder, Fell Bullet)

Yi sang has always struck me as a supportive sinner, and I think it shows pretty clearly; I do find it interesting that he specifically has a lot of generic buff/debuff support with no healing ego. Especially post-canto 4, I feel like a support role fits his character; he’s making efforts to better integrate into the group and be helpful to the other sinners, and considering we saw in regular check-up that he’s not much of a fighter, I think having his ego support his allies with buffs and debuffs suits him really well.

Faust

HP/SP Healing - 3 (1 HP, 1 SP, 1 HP+SP) (Representation Emitter, Fluid Sac, Thoracalgia)

Buff/Debuff Support - 1 (Hex Nail)

Status Support - 5 (9:2, Lasso, Telepole, Thoracalgia, Everlasting)

Damage Dealers - 1 (Everlasting)

Firstly, I did not realize how many status ego Faust has. However, although she technically has a fair bit more status support than healing, her healing ego are so strong that all those kinda tepid status ego (not everlasting, bride Faust fans please don’t kill me) don’t really feel quite as defining; nearly all of the time you’re going to be running Fluid Sac or Thoracalgia as her HE ego, and you literally can’t unequip Representation Emitter since she has no other ZAYIN ego. As far as character connections go, I think the best I’ve got is that you could tie her focus on healing into how she shares her knowledge with the other sinners. We don’t know too much about Faust as a character yet, but I think it’s worth noting how much of her story presence is spent explaining things to other characters; while I doubt that it’s what she wants to be using the Gesellschaft for, it has become her established role within sinners, so I think it’s valid to draw that connection between explaining things to keep the sinners from dying in the story and literally keeping the sinners from dying in combat.

Don Quixote

HP/SP Healing - 0

Buff/Debuff Support - 0

Status Support - 4 (La Sangre de Sancho, Lifetime Stew, Wishing Cairn, Telepole)

Damage Dealers - 3 (Electric Screaming, Fluid Sac, Yearning-Mircalla)

Don has never felt very ego focused to me; a lot of her ego are just sorta there in a way that’s useful, but isn’t essential to certain archetypes like some sinners’ ego are. The fact that it’s pretty much all offensive status and damaging ego could speak to her tendency to jump ahead and lead the charge into (probably avoidable) battle, since that’s been a recurring plot thread with her all the way through canto 7, but beyond the obvious stuff like Yearning-Mircalla connecting to her bloodfiend nature I feel like that’s the extent of the connections I can see.

Ryoshu

HP/SP Healing - 1 (1 HP, 0 SP) (Red Eyes Open)

Buff/Debuff Support - 2 (Forest for the Flames, Red Eyes)

Status Support - 4 (Soda, Blind Obsession, Thoracalgia, Contempt, Awe)

Damage Dealers - 2 (4th Match Flame, Contempt, Awe)

Something I find really interesting with Ryoshu is that, while she does have a good amount of support across her ego, a lot of it is directly dependent on violence against herself and/or others: Red Eyes Open only heals on stagger or kill, Thoracalgia’s corrosion is centered around killing allies to give more poise, and Contempt, Awe’s main bleed support only comes from the corrosion which requires her to tank her own sanity and almost certainly corrode; On Kill effects and powerful but costly corrosions aren’t unique to Ryoshu, but with her especially they feel central to her ego in a way that isn’t the case with the other sinners. A lot of her characterization (at least as I understand it) is centered around the dichotomy between her cold, kinda psychotic personality and her more emotional/sentimental side that we only get hints of; I might be a bit off with my exact character analysis, but I still think that supporting her allies via violence is pretty fitting for Ryoshu.

Meursault

HP/SP Healing - 1 (1 HP, 0 SP) (Pursuance)

Buff/Debuff Support - 2 (Chains of Others, Screwloose Wallop)

Status Support - 2 (Electric Screaming, Capote)

Damage Dealers - 2 (Regret, Yearning-Mircalla)

With Meursault, I feel like a strong bias towards pretty much any category could have been looped into his character; however, he’s probably the most evenly split sinner, so that kinda goes out the window. I do think there’s something to be said for how this sort of generalized ego spread reflects his character, though. A lot of Meursault’s characterization is centered around how he shares nothing about himself and winds up appearing as kind of a blank slate until he’s prompted to take a certain role or action by those around him; under that reading, I think being evenly spread matches how, to an outside observer, he ends up filling whatever role they push him into because it isn’t clear where his actual strengths and desires might be. This dynamic can be seen in-game: depending on how you use him, Meursault can lean towards any of the four categories, effectively making us as the players the outside observers placing him into established roles because it’s what we need from him.

Hong Lu

HP/SP Healing - 1 (0 HP, 0 SP, 1 HP+SP) (Soda)

Buff/Debuff Support - 2 (Roseate Desire, Effervescent Corrosion)

Status Support - 4 (Land of Illusion, Cavernous Wailing, Lasso, Dimension Shredder)

Damage Dealers - 0

So all of this is probably gonna be invalidated in ~1 month once canto 8 comes out, but I think there’s still some insight to be gained here, specifically on how Hong Lu has no real high-damage ego; this is probably in part a consequence of him having no WAW ego and pretty bad HE ego options, but I think it’s noteworthy that all of his ego place him in a supporting role to the other sinners in some capacity. It speak to his passivity towards everything happening around him, and I think it’s even more relevant in light of newer descriptions of him as desiring nothing; with no desires, he doesn’t end up taking the lead in combat, instead choosing to support others with more concrete objectives and passions (like fucking Don and her 7 offensive ego). I’ll stop there for the sake of not talking myself into theories that’ll immediately be proven wrong, but I’m interested to see if these sorts of themes come up in canto 8, and if his season pass ego will continue or break this trend.

Heathcliff

HP/SP Healing - 1 (0 HP, 1 SP) (Ya Śūnyatā Tad Rupam)

Buff/Debuff Support - 2 (Bodysack, AEDD)

Status Support - 2 (Holiday, Asymmetrical Inertia)

Damage Dealers - 3 (Fell Bullet, Telepole, Binds)

Honestly, Heathcliff is more evenly spread than I expected; he is a bit skewed by having 8 ego as opposed to 7, but he still has a pretty wide range of ego. The bias towards damage dealers is a kinda obvious connection to draw with his character; Heathcliff has a tendency to lash out, and that’s reflected in his ego spread. He also has the first negative coin ego of the list with Telepole, and while this another pretty easy connection to draw with his mental instability, it’ll become a bit more interesting in the coming sinners who also have negative coin ego.

Ishmael

HP/SP Healing - 2 (1 HP, 1 SP) (Bygone Days, Blind Obsession)

Buff/Debuff Support - 4 (Snagharpoon, Roseate Desire, Capote, Blind Obsession)

Status Support - 2 (Christmas Nightmare, Blind Obsession)

Damage Dealers - 3 (Ardor Blossom Star, Wingbeat, Blind Obsession)

fucking christ it’s in every category Alright, so I thought that Ishmael’s ego spread would end up kinda lopsided thanks to multi category ego like with Faust; however, Blind Obsession just sorta does everything, so it goes everywhere and it winds up all balancing out. I think her focus on buffing/debuffing is interesting to overanalyze, specifically in relation to the contrast between Queequeg and Ahab’s influences on Ishmael; the ropes and knots that she learned from Queequeg can be associated with the debuffs (mostly off of how Snagharpoon inflicts bind), which contrasts nicely with how Ahabmael’s gameplay centers around buffing allies as a representation of how Ahab rallies people around her obsession. On a more concrete note, Ishmael also has a negative coin ego with Roseate Desire; while she’s mellowed out since canto 5, I think her canto-wide mental breakdown explains this pretty nicely, and I’ll be interested to see if that instability comes back alongside Ahab in the future.

Rodion

HP/SP Healing Ego - 3 (3 HP, 0 SP) (Pursuance, Hex Nail, Indicant’s Trial)

Buff/Debuff Support - 0

Status Support - 5 (Rime Shank, Effervescent Corrosion, 4th Match Flame, Sanguine Desire, Indicant’s Trial)

Damage Dealers - 2 (What is Cast, Rime Shank)

*For the record, I’m writing this before Indicant’s Trial comes out; even if I wait, I won’t be able to test it enough to make a decision, so I just left it at HP/SP Healing and Status Support since that’s mostly confirmable off of the teasers.*

Rodion is, like I mentioned way back at the start, one of the other established healers; of her three HE ego, two of them are healing and the third is a negative coin ego with no negative coin id to use it, so you’re pretty much always going to use a healing ego with her. That negative coin ego does make sense (girl was one bad day away from distorting before Timekilling Time), but the healing ego are a lot weirder to me. Her other main bias, status support, feels like it could line up with how she aligns herself with others’ causes to give herself purpose, but that connection feels a lot shakier when we go from backing up her allies to actively healing them; my best guess would be that her healing is meant to match the carefree facade that she puts on for others to hide her true feelings, but that feels like just as much of a stretch. If anyone who got this far has any other ideas, I’d love to hear them, because that’s kinda all I’ve got.

Sinclair

HP/SP Healing - 3 (3 HP, 0 SP) (Impending Day, Lifetime Stew, Lantern)

Buff/Debuff Support - 2 (Cavernous Wailing, Hex Nail)

Status Support - 2 (Branch of Knowledge, 9:2)

Damage Dealers - 1 (Impending Day)

I think the thing that’s weirdest about Sinclair’s ego spread is that, despite technically being skewed towards healing, he doesn’t feel like a de facto healer the same way Faust and Rodion do; 2 of his 3 healing ego compete for the same slot and are both unreliable as actual sources of healing, so he ends up with Lantern as his only consistent healing source, which puts his healing more in line with Meursault as a sinner who can do healing, but only if you push him into the role. As far as character goes, while it would have been a pretty clear cut connection to draw if he had a split between support and offense, he winds up in a Hong Lu situation where he just kinda doesn’t have many damaging ego; however, I think we can still see some of that dynamic with his negative coin ego. It’s pretty obvious that they’re negative coin because of Nclair, but I think it’s still noteworthy that he has both a bias towards healing ego and the most negative coin ego out of any sinner (so far). Additionally, it’s almost certain he’ll be the other WAW on the season 6 battlepass at this point, so like with Hong Lu I’m interested to see how it shifts his ego spread.

Outis

HP/SP Healing - 1 (0 HP, 1 SP) (Holiday)

Buff/Debuff Support - 1 (Ya Śūnyatā Tad Rupam)

Status Support - 2 (Dimension Shredder, Magic Bullet)

Damage Dealers - 5 (To Páthos Máthos, Sunshower, Ebony Stem, Dimension Shredder, Binds)

Out of all the sinners, Outis is probably one of the most offense-oriented in her ego spread alongside Don and Heathcliff. While they are all very different characters, I think this makes sense when applied to their approaches to battle and dangerous situations; Don takes the lead into battle out if a sense of justice, Heathcliff starts fights because he lashes out more easily than the others, and Outis initiates combat because she believes it to be the quickest, most efficient way to handle a dicey situation. Like with those two, I don’t really have much to say beyond that; this sort of ego spread just kinda makes sense for Outis.

Gregor

HP/SP Healing - 3 (2 HP, 1 SP) (Lantern, Bygone Days, Garden of Thorns)

Buff/Debuff Support - 3 (Legerdemain, Christmas Nightmare, Garden of Thorns)

Status Support - 2 (Suddenly One Day, AEDD)

Damage Dealers - 2 (Solemn Lament, Christmas Nightmare)

Gregor is kinda similar to Meursault in that he has a pretty even ego spread (he’s technically skewed towards buff/debuff support since Lantern is barely a healing ego, but he’s still more even than most of the other sinners). Given all we’ve heard about Gregor’s untapped potential, I think this could serve as an additional hint at what he could be capable of if he gave in to his mutations, but until we learn more I don’t think I can reasonably take this connection further (I guess that didn’t stop me with Ishmael but we’re not going to talk about that).

i'm gonna write essays for each member and since i started with seonghwa i might as well go in age order so next up is joong

the first time i looked up ateez on kprofiles, which i think was during guerilla promos hongjoong immediately jumped out at me just from looking at the pfp (a crazy intense side profile of him with that half n half ponytail. kudos to whichever site editor picked thay). he just radiates Cool.

he is honestly such a talented rapper. much has been said about kpop rappers as a group, much of it true, but he is just genuinely so good. i'm not a rap expert, just an appreciator, and again i'm lamenting my inability to understand korean to really be able to hear his bars but just in terms of flow and style he's really smooth. you can tell the man has taste in hip hop too, a true appreciator.

meanwhile he's also a not-so-stealth all-rounder, he's a fantastic dancer and performer, and adds a crazy level of intensity to performances that would be like a gaping hole if he weren't here. he's not part of the Demon Line for nothing. not to mention the guitar-playing and also being a great SINGER? i heard somewhere that he will actually fill in for jongho's parts occasionally in scenarios where for whatever reason jh can't be there (no specific source but i believe it). crazy.

i would LOVE to just sit and hear him gush to me about music. i wanna make music WITH him. even though sh is my bias as a performer, hongjoong is who i'd be the most interested to actually meet and talk with. i think he's who i would get along with the best as well. (yes i'm the freak who instead of normal parasocial fantasies like "wanting to date them" has things like "i wanna be their colleague" or "i want them to infodump for hours about their hobbies to me".)(sidenote that i also think my (un)tidiness habits would give sh a conniption and so we just wouldn't work out)

as a mentally complicated weirdo nerd i'm magnetically pulled to other mentally complicated weirdo nerds, especially those with a creative streak, and it's the primary type of person i tend to get along with. yeah i have totally bought into the assessment of joongie as being some kind of nd (an observation borrowed from @storkmuffin). anyways brb unironically donning a "normal people scare me" shirt fishnet arm sleeves and black eyeliner. but yeah i just love a weird little guy--sidenote though he is really not that little yall are playing he is extremely average. he's still 6in taller than me. the short kings title stays firmly in stray kids' hands--anyways yeah i just think hes neat.

in contrast with how cool he looks in performance mode he's got an awkwardness to him offstage, bordering on loser energy, that i just find SO endearing (yeah probably partly the neurodivergency at work again). another same hat! moment for me though i don't think my cool side is quite on his level. im just awkward. to me it seems clear he became an idol because he wants to make music and not the other way around. just sooo single-minded and he constantly says and does stuff that just make me go "NERD". in the asmr interview vid he did, the interviewers were asking him about his hobbies and he was like *sheepish* "i mostly just write songs tbh" but then he was like "BUT! before i came to this interview! i managed to watch a whole episode of a tv drama!" and genuinely sounded so proud of himself for doing like, a normal "fun" thing and like. mood. but it was very freaking cute. there is a darker/more serious/sadder side to him too that is more than i want to add to this post rn, but is just another layer that draws my attention and makes the parasociality go brr

i do genuinely love his unit with seonghwa, the pairing of two ruthlessly ambitious people who are also just extremely weird (in different ways) but also quite caring and thoughtful to the people around them? your honor i love them. MATZ the song portraying MATZ the unit as serial (good guy?) arsonists is just...chef's kiss. perfect tbh.

feels relatively static like there's not a good way to get everyone talking about a specific transformative fandom thing instead of only what's happening in canon because it's a looser more disconnected community

downside of this^ is that every time I express an opinion someone disagrees with they tend to assume that this is a majority opinion rather than like, 3-4 popular gay asian artists speaking their mind? when I complained about fhjy 18 battle on here I got interesting and thoughtful reblogs and everyone kept it respectful meanwhile on twitter people started making vaguetweets about how people who hated the episode were morons. stuff like us joking that oisin's grandma's whole mahjong group got murked getting 200 likes VS people directly shitting on us getting 1.7k likes and people going "wait... people are mad about oisins grandma for REAL?! she was going to kill people !!" getting 2k likes. clearly there is some sort of strange authority people put on your words whether or not you're actually just trying to have fun with your friends

I did talk about this more on twitter but I am not a fan of the CRitterfication of d20twt either. feels like much of the fandom is now watching because they're megafans of the cast rather than for the story which leads to some really big toxic positivity bias and the implication that criticism of the show == direct attack on the crew and therefore on THEM because parasocial attachment. I don't think it helps that for a majority of them d20 is their first big fandom experience aside from like... kpop or tswift because they have not developed a lot of the detachment from canon + not being parasocial + ignoring opinions you don't like if they're not directly addressed at you mechanisms that people who've been around have. sorry I'm not trying to fandom elder or whatever here I'm 21 years old but I think it's incredibly hard for me to interact with people whose entire understanding of canon depend on siobhan thompson's opinions like this

d20twt has way less reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. better for making friends. I interact almost entirely with 30-40 of my artist friends. (my) d20tumblr experience is more chill and feels like I'm doing a seminar and people come up to ask me questions afterward. more isolating but easier to do my own thing. I do recognize and am fond of a lot of you but I've made one (1) entire friend who I can talk to off platform and not just see on the dash/my notes and that's just the nature of how tumblr works as a platform (it's terrible for conversations)

I don’t thiiiink this is too much of a spoiler given the happy ending and the fact that this is a hypothetical, so! I would love to see MC go somewhere fancy with them!! It would have to be far, far, far into the future though, even from my perspective, once 1) they’ve been public for a second, and 2) she’s more comfortable with the whole ‘being famous’ thing 😊 They would love to have her though (they love to show off) and she would probably love to go under it all (she’s their fan. and also likes to show off). Though if they mentioned her during an acceptance speech or something I think she would kill them 😭😭 Picturing the camera cutting to her astonished terrified little face, aww... Or at least she would mean-dom the hell out of the culprit(s) after. Inevitable to be honest. Canon event.

I tend to picture MC in whites, off-whites, and earth tones in her daily wear, and whites, off-whites, and pinks in her formalwear — generally kind of dreamy and romantic and girly, can go sleek or princessy or anywhere in between, sometimes angelic almost bordering on bridal. I think silk and tulle and gauzy floaty stuff suits her but I like the thought of her in heavier materials too — velvets and beads and boning… 💛 The dark blue velvet dress I.N got her was actually fan service for ME hahahahaha. I LOVE corsets and corsetry but while MC would wear a corseted dress or waspie or something like a girdle I can’t really see her strapping into a full-on steel-boned corset or anything like that… 🤔 Sad (for me) (also maybe for some of the boys if they’re into that, because corsetry fetishes are alive and real)!

“Is there a precedent for idols with soulmates in RONverse?” There is! Soulmates are super rare, but it’s mentioned somewhere that a few idols or other celebrities in RONverse have met their soulmates and it tends to go over better than other news about romance or dating 😊 Obviously a lot of fans are just happy for their favorites if they’re in a happy relationship regardless of soulmate status, but soulmates are so rare and special that it kind of, like… implies a degree of permanence? Like your bias isn't going to get their heart broken; this is The One, literally. And even if a fan is disappointed that an idol is taken so to speak, it’s kind of inevitable they would be if they met their soulmate. Like obviously they’re going to be together and bond and stuff. There’s less judgement/outcry, maybe?

I’m sure some other idol groups are pack, especially since groups have really cultivated/promoted/marketed their friendships as part of the brand in recent generations! Not saying those bonds aren’t real, sorry, just like— I feel like most groups you hear about these days are friends outside of work!

BUT I don’t think we’ll meet other idols with soulmates or in packs mostly just because I am not very knowledgeable about idols 😅 I don’t stan anyone else… I have a very normie knowledge of kpop outside of SKZ…. Limitations of the author hahahahahaha

Little observations and perspectives of folks I've gathered on Eliksni and Eramis as I've floated around the internet in the Destiny 2 spheres:

Please keep in mind, these are just my observations from the past 2 months, recognizing there's bias to that and I may be wrong! ;)

1. Spent the majority of time on TikTok, just kinda where I landed after instagram got weird. Made other game content, ended up in Destiny 2 community. There were a couple lighthearted Eliksni fans, who mostly posted meme type content. A few folks posting broad Destiny 2 lore content, they were heavily followed! But, besides that, I couldn't find other Eramis friends. While many were fairly neutral to my pro-Eramis content, I still dealt with hate/uninformed commenters on the regular. Overall, though, interestingly, most folks took an open-minded approach and would admit that they hadn't really understood her. I had many find my content and say they were on the fence or were surprised anyone actually thought about her that deeply. I liked educating on there... I could tell many still didn't like her, for example, one of my friends never interacted with any of my Eramis content, but liked everything else I posted instantly. Lol. But, in the end she said she enjoyed my content about the "big lady" (I love that lmao). TikTok = generally polite and curious.

2. Reddit. Nothing but hatred. It is like being in the wild. They want nothing to do with Eramis besides her death. They also blanketly tend to hate Eliksni. I'd lose my sanity commenting back and forth for hours with folks. It's not a pleasant place. A lot of them are just content with being ignorant and uninformed...even in the lore subreddit. Reddit = 10/10 do not recommend.

3. Tumblr. I'm extremely new so I can't really speak to it too much. But, from my lurking, I can tell that this space is way more open minded than the other platforms. Which, is nicely how I remember this platform being many years ago through the other fandom groups I have been apart of. I'm sure nowhere is perfect, but, this seems close enough. I also feel there's so many lore rabbit holes I can jump in and read, so exciting for me. I tend to love reading headcannons and fanfic. Tumblr = more clustered and nice for niche interests like Eliksni.

Other spaces like YouTube, I just don't know much about as I don't really interact with folks on there..

1) A few people get called out for genuinely, undeniably heinous behavior, with receipts showing exactly what they're purported to show, loud and clear. Maybe they molested kids, maybe they started a cult, maybe it turned out that all their social justice talk was a smokescreen for hate recruiting, maybe they'd been catfishing for clout and profit, maybe they'd been trawling the site the callout is on for people to scam and abuse, maybe it's even more than one of the above. Whatever it is, it's unequivocally bad and SOMETHING has to be done and the systems at hand have sweet fuckall TO do about it, so a warning to the community it is! 1.5) People are primed to believe, when they see a callout post, that yes, what this person did was AWFUL. 2) People seeing that this works - and often genuinely but incorrectly believing that they have another equally bad case on their hands - start posting callouts about shit like friend drama (that wasn't a fight, it was ABUSE) or media taste (I heard he watched Dragon Maid, PEDO ALERT!!!) or consensual kinks (can you BELIEVE she misgendered another girl who asked her to??? Disgusting!). Most but not all of these target marginalized people, because of course it's easier to make a mountain of a molehill when people have a preexisting bias to believe it's a mountain (though contrary to popular current belief, it's usually not one specific group in particular). 3) People start fighting over the utility of callouts - some people believe these bits of nonevidence are TOTALLY proof of wrongdoing, others start to get alarm fatigued because surprise surprise, it's WAY harder to find people who are actually stealing and selling human bones, or lying about being HIV+ sex trafficking survivors for discourse cred, or starting entire cult houses, than it is to find...people who aren't perfect friends 100% of the time, or who like media that squicks you out; a few people still manage to fall somewhere in between. 4) Callouts fall off in frequency until someone does something SO heinous as to return us to step 1. I feel like we're kinda between steps 3 and 4 here, as a site at large - which, ironically, makes me all that much more suspicious when someone highlights a specific group as being the ONLY one targeted and harmed by fake callouts.

Also, even callout posts that have legitimate grievances tend to do the Wendigoon thing where it's frontloaded with ridiculous bullshit before it gets to "also, this person murdered twelve women from 1999 to 2004." Like, why did I hear about how Vivziepop using voodoo aesthetic risked her staff being haunted to death by spirits before I heard she thinks non-binary people are faking being trans for attention?

I went into a restaurant to order some takeout while Original Mall Anon waited in the car, and when I went to get our sodas, there were these three preppy girls just...congregating there, taking up the space long after they'd finished getting their own, blocking anyone else from getting their drinks without asking them to move and, I shit you not, talking about buying shit from Hollister. Half of me, in the present, was like "okay. They're younger than me. I shouldn't be MEAN. This is a minor rudeness, I don't need to make a whole Thing of it." Half of me was violently removed from my body and de-aged to 15 because what the fuck, I was standing there, dark clothes, dyed hair, Hot Topic bag in hand, being treated like an annoying nonentity by a bunch of preppy girls who were acting like they fuckin owned the place, that was something I thought wasn't supposed to HAPPEN outside of high school and yet here I was, uh, catching up on missed experiences to a level I REALLY didn't expect to happen at a Wingstop.

God how I want some Wingstop. I love every part of this, anon. Perhaps your mall is truly unteathered from time and space.

It's completely mindless harassment without any real point and if they show up on one of your posts you should report them.

Avatar: the Last Airbender Personality Types: Sokka

I really love Sokka's journey in AtLA. I love his arc in the Kyoshi Island episode. I love watching him come into his own in S3, and figure out how to be a warrior in the way that works best for him. He doesn't have to be a warrior the way his father is, or the way Zuko is, or even the ways Katara or Aang or Suki are. Sokka's version of a warrior announces birthday parties in the middle of battle and makes swords out of space metal.

Sokka's Enneagram

Wound: Sokka's father went off to fight in the war, leaving him behind with the responsibility of protecting his sister.

Wounding message: You must protect your family.

Core desire: to be a warrior and defend his family

Core fear: that he won't be able to contribute meaningfully to his community

Defense mechanism: Sokka is highly suspicious of others, prioritizing the safety of himself and those closest to him.

Strengths: Sokka is clever, cautious, courageous, pragmatic, able to think outside the box, skeptical, and willing to grow and admit when he's been wrong

Sixes live in the Head center and tend to overexpress fear.

The Enneagram Institute describes 6w5 as "The Defender," and 6w7 as "The Buddy." I'm currently leaning toward 6w7 for Sokka.

Here's the description of 6w7 from Truity:

Six wing Sevens are Sixes that resemble a Seven in some ways. These Sixes are more social and relaxed than other Sixes. They are good at responding to people’s needs and often enjoy being part of groups and organizations.

Subtype

I think Sokka is probably a SO 6, since he is focused on protecting his community. From Enneagram Explained:

Focuses On:  The need to be secure/supported with their groups and communities. SO 6s focus on being responsible and logical to feel secure and supported. These 6s handle their fear by following authorities and rules. They love accuracy and knowing what is expected of them. Structure and guidelines bring security to these 6s. Relationship to Their Vice (fear): SO 6s may show fear. Potential Mistypes: SO 6s can often look like type 1s.

Tritype

With 6 as Sokka's Head type, I go back and forth between 2 and 3 as his most likely Heart type, and I think 1 is his most likely Gut type.

However, when reading the descriptions of tritypes that include both 1 and 6, none of them really seem like a good fit for Sokka.

After looking at the other tritypes including 6, I think his Gut type might actually be 8! Both 2-6-8 and 3-6-8 resonated, but after reading them, I think 3-6-8, "The Justice Fighter", is the best description.

Here's the description of 3-6-8, from Katherine Fauvre's website:

If you are a 368, you are ambitious, inquisitive, and protective. You want to be accomplished, loyal, and straightforward. Verbally adept and a good reader of people and situations, you have the ability to identify unjust authority, rebel against tyranny, and verbally spar against it. The bit about being "verbally adept" and "a good reader of people and situations" is what solidified this as Sokka's tritype for me!

He shares this tritype with Kyo Sohma, as well as with Arisa Uotani, also from Fruits Basket!

Sokka's MBTI:

I liked the format I used for MBTI in my Aang post, so I'm going to stick with that here.

Information-Gathering:

Everyone uses both iNtuition and Sensing, but one will be more natural to rely on. Everyone will also introvert one of these processes, and extrovert the other.

Someone who introverts iNtuition and extroverts Sensing will be able to cut to the core of understanding something in a state of deep, solitary focus. They will gather sensory information through their experience in the present, preferably with others.

Someone who extroverts iNtuition and introverts Sensing will tend to brainstorm aloud, connecting many possibilities at once, and will rely on comparisons to past sense-memories in order to understand the present.

I think the second paragraph describes Sokka much better than the first, and I think he uses Ne more than Si. He brainstorms aloud all the time! This makes him an -N-P type. In fact, I'd go so far as to say he's probably an EN_P type, since his use of Ne is such a core aspect of his personality.

Decision-Making:

Just like with the two information-gathering processes, everyone uses both Thinking and Feeling to some degree, but will use one more naturally. And again, they will introvert one, and extrovert the other.

Someone who introverts Thinking and extroverts Feeling will use their own internal logical framework to come to decisions, and will base their decisions on outcomes for the people around them.

On the other hand, someone who extroverts Thinking and introverts Feeling will use external logic in decision-making, such as rules, laws, procedures, checklists, etc... and will base their decisions on the kind of person they want to be, or the kind of person they see themselves to be.

This is trickier, but I think the first paragraph is a slightly better fit than the second, and he uses Ti more than Fe, making him an -NTP type, most likely ENTP.

ENTPs use Ne Ti Fe Si.

Let's see how the Myers and Briggs Foundation describes Ne as Dominant and Si as Inferior:

I think the first excerpt clearly sounds like Sokka. The second two, I have to squint a little.

2023 has been a year to say the least so lets get into this 😂. As usual this is in no particular order cause I cant handle putting these into a proper order.

𝐓𝐨𝐩 5 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐬:

1. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐰 𝐂𝐚𝐟𝐞 (2022).

I watched this on a whim and boy am I glad I did. The female lead is so unhinged but in the best way and our main guy is so in love with her I cant. Literally this drama was such a fun time and everything connected together so well. Just watch this drama pls.

2. 𝐁𝐨 𝐑𝐚! 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐡 {𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞} (2023).

Yoo In Na shines and I love the character growth that both the leads go through, everything that happens makes sense and it really does show that working on yourself isnt a linear process. There will be set backs but you can over come them. I tend to not care for side couples but I loved all of them in this, they were just hilarious or adorable.

3. 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧 (2023).

I wasnt going to watch this drama but thankfully instagram reels made me interested enough to give this a chance. I love all 4 of the leads, they are my babies and they deserve all the happiness in the world.

4. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈 𝐅𝐥𝐲 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮 (2023).

This was such a cute, fun drama. I didnt expect to love it as much as I did, the family dynamics, friendships, everything was so well done and the 2 couples were the cutest.

5. 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 (2023).

Literally Instagram reels made me watch this and I do not regret it. The melodrama, romance, revenge, plot twists... Everything was such a wild ride, I recommend that everyone watches it.

Honestly I was just seeing too many funny reels about SVT and then I watched the Game Caterers videos without even knowing all of their names and Super was everywhere that I just fell into the rabbit hole that is Seventeen.

My bias came and she ate. I love this song and it showed in my top 2023 songs its at number 6... The top 5 are all Taylor obviously.

💔 If you had to remove one major character from the series, who would you choose?

That's actually a REALLY hard question to answer! Even with all of the soulsborne characters I find the most uninteresting, I can't really think of any that I find so pointless to the narrative that they should just disappear from it entirely...

In terms of minor characters though, I can name all of six of the most useless bastards in the series right here: Blue Smelter Demon, Lud & Zallen, the Graverobber, Varg, and Cerah. These fucking shit bosses contained in the most infuriatingly designed areas in the entire goddamn souls series add nothing lore-wise and have no reason to exist other than to make 100% completionists like myself hate being alive. Every day that I think about them is a day splotched with misery and I hope one day a mod of DS2 can exist that removes them entirely. If you can't tell, I don't like these bosses >:-(

🖤 Which character is not as morally good as everyone else seems to think?

Reah of Thorolund. While I do think she ultimately tries to be a good person, I will die upon my hill that she is not NEARLY as innocent as the fandom often makes her out to be!

That fact that she's not only the leader of the cleric gang's expedition to find the Rite of Kindling, and thus a high ranking member of the very shady Way of White religion, is already a huge red flag to me. Though even more than that is the fact that she has more physical humanity on her than both Lautrec AND Patches, who are two characters heavily implied to have killed people in order to hold that much humanity on them. Even if Reah doesn't like killing and didn't kill for her humanity stash, somebody did kill for her to be able to have that much on hand. Probably Vince and Nico, and maybe even Petrus too, as they don't have much for themselves despite being her bodyguards. Yet even still a lot tend to forget that she's the one holding Wrath of the Gods on-hand to sell to you, so she certainly has the Faith to cast frighteningly powerful miracles if she wanted to.

Honestly at the end of the day I think too many people just assume Reah's this innocent little maiden solely because she's a young woman. I'm not saying everyone is intentionally being misogynistic in their assumptions, but frankly I can't see why so many would ignore her very clearly stated leadership in her group alongside her 1-uping Petrus in the power of the miracles she carries unless some internalized bias is at play.

From running these, does it seem like older Pokemon tend to be more popular versus newer ones, or is it any pokemons game? I feel like I tend to see older 'mons winning in matchups against newer ones the majority of the time, but that might be some sort of confirmation bias on my end.

Whew ok! Sorry this took me so long to reply to. This kinda caught me right at the start of the busy period, and I didn't want to give it a half-assed answer, especially because I wasn't really super sure if I was seeing any notable trends. (Most of the time I dedicate to maintaining this event is spent setting things up instead of reviewing data!)

Here are some rough and probably not precisely accurate numbers:

For my health I don't have the time to write out proper descriptions, so hopefully my discussion will be helpful enough, especially because it can be fairly easy to draw some inaccurate conclusions from this specifically because it uses a lot of hard numbers vs ratios.

First table:

Gen 2 and Gen 7 (!) are performing the strongest overall. Gen 9 and Gen 5 (!!) are performing the most poorly. I figure Gen 9 isn't faring too well for a multitude of reasons -- most notably, I think, people haven't really had time to grow attached to these guys yet. To speculate on Gen 5, I have a few theories. Gen 5 introduced a lot of new Pokemon, interest gets spread out (though I am surprised that age-group nostalgia isn't helping it more along here...). If I recall correctly, a lot of the designs were also quite heavily critiqued, though I've never paid much attention to that sort of commentary.

I'm honestly surprised that Gen 1 is that close to even, but then I don't think it helps that a lot of the less popular designs keep popping up to be repeatedly swept... The data set isn't large enough to avoid being easily influenced by various sub-tournaments haha.

Second table:

This one looks at each generation and how it compares to matches where it was paired with older generations. Earlier generation results are less helpful because, for instance, Gen 2 only has to contend with Gen 1, but Gen 8 has to contend with Gens 1-7... I wasn't sure how to break this up more properly, and I've already spent so much time on this 😅 I could probably figure it out with time but I don't want to keep this ask on hold for like 3 more months. I think it's interesting to see how notably well Gen 7 performs here, like it has a notable number of wins though it's dealing with 6 entire generations.

Anyway, more red in the ratios (basically, more instances where Pokemon of a given generation lost to older gens more than they won) supports the hypothesis.

Third table:

Basically the opposite of the above. More green means more generations that fared better against the generations after it. Gen 5 is the only one who doesn't have this, but it's even. It's won as many Gen 6-9 polls as it's lost

Gen 8 being the strongest here is a little funny, but it just means that Gen 8 has been performing super well when specifically placed in contrast to Gen 9. The fact that there are so few polls in this category probably is why the ratio can get so high at all though.

Generation Gap Average:

This one's a bit hard for me to explain but it basically is concerned with how much the earliest generations perform against the latest generations, but close-generation matches take a lot of weight out of the end result. Basically though a smaller number means that the Generations aren't AS stratified. There's enough love for newer Gens vs older ones. This number hovered much closer to 1 for most of the data gathering.

Idk if this is helpful, but here's the formula:

=AVERAGE(ARRAYFORMULA(IF(B2:B-A2:A<>0, B2:B-A2:A,)))

The A col lists the winners and the losers are in B, so it's literally just averaging the difference between the winner and the loser. The best conclusion we can draw from this is that there is a preference toward older generations. If there was a preference toward newer ones, the number would be negative.

Old/New:

Literally just the number of older generation wins divided by newer generation wins, which you can see right next to that, so yeah older Gens, relative to the other Gen in the poll, have quite a bit of a lead.

Other notes:

In more recent polls, voting is actually skewing more toward later generations, but at the start, which notably voted on starters, voting was HEAVILY skewed toward older generations vs newer ones. It was unfortunately because I noticed this that I ended up having to collect data from all the (relevant) polls because those trends pretty strongly impacted the results...

Anyway! I don't feel confident to make any conclusions outright, but now at least we have an idea of what the numbers look like right now! Lots can be gleaned from this.

1) V, hands down, no question. Like a lot of people, i got into kpop through BTS. I watched the dynamite MV as a sad, sad college student in 2020, saw him with his lovely honey blond hair and green suit, and was gone.

It's all just! so fun!! It's not really any deeper than that, I guess. Do I get emotional about Bang Chan and his producing and his stage presence and his love for stays? Am I so so proud of E-Chan for finally debuting after trying for so long? Do I get emotional watching S.Coups talk about the other members of svt and how much he cares about them and that he doesn't want to pursue solo activities because he is a part of svt first? Do I get emotional about kpop groups pushing through ridiculous drama stirred up for no good reason and having to deal with the reality of being idols? yes to all! But more than any of that, it is all just so fun. Simply the fact that they are artists creating music and other video content, and that all the goodies you get with albums even exist just makes me happy. I don't really know these folks, but the things they've created bring me joy and I'm happier for it. What more could I possibly want?

Of course! and honestly i could be reading more into it and have a bias due to him being one of my favorites, so feel free to tell me if it doesn't make sense.

I think any of his romances really show how much he cares and (arguably) how much trouble he has accepting that part of himself. his second confession (the one where you do Raphael's quest first before heading to moonrise and meeting Araj) is a good example of how much he tends to care for those that he ends up finding himself in any type of close relationship. the vulnerability he has during the confession and the ability to come clean is a peak (and the start) of his more warmhearted nature.

another example would be if you're romancing him, and you attempt to steal the blood of Lathander he actively tells the group he is going to stay behind to free Tav. and like you brought up, the act 2 Durge scene where instead of killing Durge he talks them through it.

That being said, his caring side doesn't really begin to show through until Act 2/3 (I haven't been through a lot of Act 3 yet but I know the man comes to Tav's defense a lot).

Act 1 has little bits and pieces, like showing concern after meeting Raphael and admitting to Tav his past so they don't make the mistake of trusting a devil (I didn't expect him to be so honest about it and it through me off guard a little). He also seems to at least care a little of Tav's opinion when dealing with Gandrel (even waiting for the Tav's go ahead or...Tav to not give the go ahead and then him doing it anyway but in a more pissy manner).

Could all of these be from from a place self preservation? Absolutely! Dude's a menace to society most of the time. But given enough time and enough care from the Tav, he becomes more empathetic. I wouldn't say he is more caring than the other companions. A lot of them have him beat in that department. But when focusing on Astarion and his behaviors, he really becomes someone unexpectedly sweet. It makes me think what he was like when he was alive and happy.

That was a lot longer than I intended! I just love dissecting characters and Astarion happens to be one of those characters I love to nitpick.

I need someone to do a video essay-length deep dive into how 75% of the BG3 fandom fell so hard for Astarion's manipulative seductor act that they believe that's his actual personality. This man has to practice his lines and still fumbles them constantly. He flat-out says it's all a front because he believes his sex appeal is the only reason anyone would keep him around, which is tragic. When he drops the act, he becomes this kind of silly man rediscovering what it means to be himself, and what it means to both love and be loved. He says "I'm all pointy ears, love." while turning his head to show off those pointy ears. Let him be silly, let him be awkward! It's so much more authentic then him being a walking innuendo.

He has a mid charisma stat with a bonus for deception and rolled a nat 20 on all y'all.

Random thoughts on Kpop

... as an old millennial southeast asian living in the UK for the last 20+ years.

For context, I'm the sort of person who has no fixed preference on the type of music I listen to. I will listen to any genre if I am in the mood for it, usually. My preferences also come in phases and they last for months at a go. No prizes for guessing what phase I am in right now.

My observations in general:

Mando and Cantopop have been part of the popular genres of music where I am originally from.

Japanese songs/pop has always been a huge influence on the former. The late 80s to 90s saw a surge in popularity of the actual songs themselves as well as dramas, movies etc.

The Hallyu wave corresponded with the mid-late noughties, and eventually superseded the Japanese fad because of extremely good marketing and publicity.

Idol-chasing and worshipping has been around a long time. It's not unique to Korea. It's not even unique to Asia. Think of Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift etc (her fans are called Swifties, which isn’t different from kpop fandom names) - people have always chased celebrities no matter where it is in the world.

Has it been turned into a marketing strategy in the East? Yes. But it's not the kpop industry that started it. Photocards, signings, and fanmeets have been around in Taiwan for way longer. The kpop industry saw an opportunity to make money out of it and therefore it became not only normalised but encouraged.

Gen 1 of kpop is the most similar to the groups in Taiwan/HK/Japan etc, likely due to regional and popular influence.

The main difference between the kpop industry and the HK/Taiwan industry is that idols are not churned out like products from a factory. For a while, there was also a distinct segregation in the latter between 'true talent' (實力派）and 'idol' （偶像派). Naturally, being an 'idol' instead of having 'true talent' became derogatory, but likewise is being called 'truly talented' -- the former denotes a lack of actual ability and only good looks, the latter the reverse. Those terms eventually faded out of use with the "crowning" of the Four Heavenly Kings of Cantopop, where the big four included both those who started as idols and those who were famed for their singing, and they represented the ideal celebrity singer possessing both talent and looks.

Despite this, there remains a bias among listeners of music that there's a difference between 'artist' and 'idol'. Idols performing in musicals in Korea for eg tend to be met with a side-eye among theatre goers until they prove themselves on the stage.

Yes, elitist art snobbery is prevalent wherever one goes. I say that as someone who grew up in a culture where music preferences dictate one’s 'cool' factor. I admit that I was influenced by this stupid mindset until very recently (more on that later). The MTV listeners back in the day were the cool kids, while the Mandopop idol chasers were no-lifers, the alt-rock and metalheads were outcast rebels etc.

As for myself, I listened to anything. It was the behaviour of the person than what kind of music they listened to that mattered.

Here's my personal experience with kpop.

I was well aware of the Hallyu wave when it happened. It started with K-dramas getting screen time, and then K-movies. I cared little about the music from the east at that time (late 00s) as I was not really exposed to it as I had been living in the UK for years then. My sister was an unofficial Cassiopeia (I had the impression you could only call yourself a Cassie if you were actually registered as part of the TVXQ official fan club). While I was visiting family on holiday, she nicked my iPod and dumped a load of TVXQ songs on it.

I had to admit, I liked their singing. To this day the quintet was considered the pinnacle of the ideal BG.

This was the early days of YouTube, and I used it extensively to watch their performances. One thing led to another and soon I was discovering the entire scene in general, alongside other singers and celebrities. I was learning the dance routine in my living room for Lee Hyori's Samsung Anycall songs. I had a crush on Daniel Henney. I discovered SuJu and found them more interesting than TVXQ, because the members were larger than life, along with their music.

The interest eventually died when Life™ happened. It coincided with TVXQ's split. Han Geng left SuJu eventually, and as a SJ-M listener their songs no longer felt the same. I discovered that fans wrote fanfic about these idols, and it grossed me out because even with stage personas, these aren't fictional characters but real people. I heard about the horrible things that so-called fans did to the idols in person and decided that it was time to distance myself from all of that. I didn't feel a loss as such, and treated it as another phase of my music listening being over.

I picked up kpop songs on and off a couple of years later, when I came across more dance covers for Infinite, T-Ara, Wonder Girls, 2NE1 etc. This was in the period just before Gangnam Style became viral. I rediscovered SuJu as OT12 and I felt largely neutral watching their Sorry Sorry MV even though the song was catchy as hell and so was the dance. It was a phase where kpop was Not It music-wise for me. Psy's worldwide success turned his song and dance into such a fad that it killed any further interest in it.

As the years passed, more Life™ happened. Kpop became hearing about BlackPink and BTS, with some of their songs in the background on TV and internet radio. It became learning about how kpop fans haven't become any less toxic from the days where they tried to buyout SM shares to force SJ OT13 to remain OT13 and cancel the two extra SJ-M members. Being a kpop fan became synonymous with being an obsessive stalker. They even use the word 'stan' unironically as part of the fandom lingo. I held that derogatory cultural belief and stayed away from the genre and industry in general.

Cue the end of 2024: YouTube decided that due to a combination of the S.Korea martial law news and the Arcane 2 soundtrack that I played, I would be interested in kpop and therefore it’s algorithm gave me Stray Kids' MVs.

I bought it hook, line and sinker, because their songs are bangers. I shared them with friends who also liked the music.

Separate from that, one fine day I decided to go through the old Favourites playlist I saved on YouTube, because it has been a minute (16 years). I found a video of Paradise by Infinite that I saved back in 2011/2012, because I was listening to the song on repeat and was learning its dance. I had forgotten about its existence and the song suddenly brought me back to a time and place that I had not wanted to think about, simply because I changed a lot over the years.

Thanks to the algorithm, I also ended up going through way more suggested videos. I eventually found and watched Infinite's reunion concert, which in turn led to variety shows, and eventually to SuJu, the first group I was truly interested in.

I never called myself an ELF (the name of SuJu's fan club that stands for Ever Lasting Friends) nor that I “stanned” any of the group. The fandom had too many toxic associations for me due to what they did back in 2008-2009. Neither do I call myself a Stay for simply liking Stray Kids' music. I hate labels - they're far too restrictive and pigeonholey. I don't need to label myself anything in order to appreciate a group and their music, like I had done 15-16 years ago.

After spending more than 2 months catching up on their discography and their sub-units, I finally decided to listen to TVXQ's old performances that I used to play on repeat. The nostalgia was just that. Nostalgia.

That's the point where one knows when one has healed isn't it? When memories don't hit you in the gut anymore, but just become a mere reminder. I can listen to any old song and say the same, not just kpop songs. I wasn't THAT invested in celebrity culture to go find out everything about the idols whose songs I listened to the most.

But I got invested in the old SuJu members - namely the KRY unit, because it felt quasi-comforting to know that they're still around and actively releasing music. It gives this old hag hope that I can still look this good as an old millennial, as I’m in approximately the same age group as the members. It gives this old hag hope that I can still do things at my age.

It gives the same sort of feeling when the Four Heavenly Kings were declared years ago: the perfect celebrity who looks good but also sings well. Back then the four were also in in their 30s-40s.

Plus I still like their music.

The last couple of months has made me realise that being elitist when it comes to music preferences is just committing the same stupid cult/clique/fandom mistake as everywhere else and is BAD. There's nothing wrong with being in a fandom as long as you don't cause active harm to anyone else, don’t objectify the artist, behave yourself in general and don’t be an asshat.

With that in mind, I joined a fan discord simply for news and updates about performances and song releases. While it is not part of the official fan club, everyone's an ELF in it. I got the role as well, so I guess I am now an ELF.

I don't know how long this phase of my current music interest will last, but it's something interesting to look back on once I move on.

1. How is he in a relationship?

Riddle is in the group of overthinkers.

He wants to be the perfect boyfriend for you, but the problem is — he has zero experience in romance.

He's constantly nervous around you, for so many reasons. A part of him believes you deserve someone better — and he strives to be that person someday. But give him time, he's slowly learning.

Due to his inexperience, he'll get flustered at literally any move you try to make on him, and if you tease him Riddle gets all red and will try to get his revenge…. someday. When he stops feeling like he's going to explode when he thinks about giving you a kiss.

Jade is a bit contradictory sometimes.

He prefers to keep your relationship private. Just because he wants to keep you all for himself — but due to this same reason, his subtle possessiveness, he can't bring himself to actually hide how he feels about you. (He doesn't like PDA, and he has to be in the right mood for it.)

And if you're in a relationship with him you might already know how to read AT LEAST a bit of his reactions and indirects. And you bet this man will use this against you — he prefers to tease you or flirt with you in ways he knows only you can understand. Others might find it normal but you're the only one who knows he's trying to mess with you! So yeah, also expect a lot of inside jokes between the two of you.

2. What are his love languages?

Riddle - Acts of service and words of affirmation.

Riddle wants to prove he can be the best boyfriend you could ever have, which is why he's constantly trying to be useful for you.

Literally ask him for help in anything and he'll drop anything he's doing just to help you. He's a bit selfish in that way.

And he also likes to show off a bit, trying to show you why he's the top student with a smug face. Just wanting to prove himself as better as any other student in Night Raven College as usual!

As I mentioned, he is constantly overthinking — which is why he needs constant reassurance. Even if he's not willing to ask for it, the way his face lights up every time you tell him 'i love you' is extremely cute. Tell him he's a good boyfriend, and that you're proud of his efforts — there's nothing that could make him happier than that.

Jade - Quality time and acts of service

Jade just likes to spend time with you, even if you two aren't talking at all — he just likes it when you're there.

But even then, whenever Jade is with you it's like he always has something to say. He has long conversations with you every time since he knows you won't judge him.

He's a very good listener too, he's able to just listen to you or give you advice if you ask for it.

And he's also willing to talk about anything with you too. Even if it's something deep or just about his day.

He is still a very private guy… but you're the only one he allows to know anything about him, just like he knows everything about you.

And doing things for you is just his special way of showing affection.

It's like you have him wrapped around your finger, anything you ask and he'll give it to you.

He wants to be the one you go to when you're struggling — someone you trust.

17. How is he when he's upset with you?

Riddle needs a bit of time to cool off. He tends to avoid you until he's feeling better since he doesn't want to say something he'll regret.

Depending on what kind of person you are, arguments with him probably aren't rare — he tends to nag you a lot and doesn't really measure his words. Something he's genuinely working on but still.

He'll do his best to minimize arguments, but it's a slow process.

Just give him space for a bit.

This is rare, Jade is usually a pretty rational guy. But even then, sometimes he can't help but act a bit childishly.

You can tell by the way he's more passive aggressive. Like Riddle, he needs time to cool off… But he won't tell you he's upset.

Since you know him, you can tell by the way his polite smile looks a bittt forced, more so than usual. Which is actually a big giveaway.

Jade will apologize later for his behaviour — but he will expect an apology from you too.

18. How is he when YOU are upset with him?

Riddle is either very quick to apologize if he did something wrong OR he'll be insistent and won't back down if you back down.

If he thinks he's right in whatever you two are arguing he's probably not going to give in easily.

The best course of action would be to just end the argument there since it's leading to nowhere — but that's not the easiest thing to do sometimes.

In that case… Then he'll apologize for overreacting later. When he's not mad anymore.

In general, he doesn't like when you're upset with him at all. It just makes his insecurities skyrocket and that's why he really tries to avoid arguments.

There are actually a lot of reasons why you might get upset with Jade.

Maybe it's the way he constantly overworks himself and refuses to get help? Or perhaps the way he constantly tries to hide stuff from you? Maybe it's because of all the stuff he does behind the scenes to help you in some way without asking for your opinion first?

I can see him being even more stubborn than Riddle, maybe more willing to agree with what you're saying to please you. But it's hard to change his opinions.

You'll notice how he gives you more free meals and drinks at the Mostro Lounge for free, or how he apparently did your homework for you… again, without asking. Or tell you how beautiful you look today.

Of course, you know this is just his way to avoid the problem and get to the part of 'you forgiving him' without actually fixing the problem first.

You'll need to confront him about it.

He'll apologize again, of course. This time more genuine. After all, he didn't know how needy he could feel when you weren't around.
