Two Fights For Freedom

Bell-mère lay motionless, both arms splayed out at her sides. Nami grasped her left arm. Not a sign of injury, other than that old scar on the inside of her upper arm. The girl looked down and realized there was a knife in her mother’s limp hand.

Nojiko would not stop crying. The tangerine had disappeared. Nami grabbed the handle of the knife and couldn’t see her reflection in the blade.

“What are you doing, Nami!” Nojiko cried out, “Stop, stop it!”

She wanted to stop. Nami was horrified. Her body was moving on its own, because for some reason, this was what had to be done. For some reason, she unlatched the buttons of her mother’s shirt from the MACE down. For some reason, she pressed the blade in the center just beneath her ribs and slid down, down, down.

There was no blood. The skin split like shearing wool, and the knife disappeared. Nojiko was weeping uncontrollably. Nami was horrified. She grasped the flesh on either side of the incision and pulled her mother apart like her skin was an overripe peel.

No blood, no organs. No bones, no flesh. Within Bell-mère lied nothing but tangerines. Whole fruits packed in tight, as deep as the eye could see. Nojiko cried into her hands and Nami stared, searching for the end, the origin, the reason
