I keep rewatching the Patrice & Frank scenes.

There's just something about them. The dynamic between them, the way they look at each other. The fear in Patrice battling with his devotion to Frank. And then the connections to River. (What if it had been River at Patrice's place? If, in a different timeline, River would've grown up at Les Arbres?)

Especially the scene with Molly in the background sticks out to me particularly.

We have seen Frank hurt Patrice before. Hell, Patrice is clearly expecting to be hurt now, and somehow, the casual violence with which Frank treats him, comes suddenly. The quick mood change from pulling at his hair, to gently grabbing his neck, to pulling him into a hug is jarring, especially with the dialogue not entirely matching Frank's actions. It's harsh and it's not, there are two different things going on here. The physical one and the emotional one. (Just look at his expression when they hug. There is so much pain behind those eyes)

And later, when Patrice is chained to the radiator, staring up at Shirley and begging her to "Do it. Do it." I don't think he wants to die, not really, but I think he wants to face Frank even less. He's grown up as a child soldier and has spectacularly failed his handler, of course he can't face Frank anymore. I doubt it would've gone well for him if they had seen each other again.

This is the little Ekko/Jinx moment that's been sticking with me:

Because on first watch, I expected this was going to be something negative. Ekko trying to defend why he'd been so hostile to Powder. 'You're not the kind of person who helps... because you destroy things,' or something to that effect.

But no.

oh

What a way to look at Jinx?? Even with everything she's done... He looks at this well-adjusted, 'ideal' Powder, and still thinks she's missing something that his Jinx has. The Powder that he knew was so determined to make something that mattered... it's a Powder who's content to play second-fiddle to the people around her, a Powder that settles that feels off to him.

And that ties into why he can't stay here. Our Ekko isn't the kind of person who settles either.

like yeah. at certain ages... let shit go. im not defending the real immature shit. im not defending the karen you're picturing. i worked in retail i hate those people too. (once somebody got mad at me because she didn't like how our winter window decor was a snowman smoking a pipe. i wish i was joking).

but men at 57 will write books about how 17 year old girls are soooo sexy. they will invent worlds where women have to be naked for "armor reasons." they will write songs that treat women as objects. people rush to defend them. meanwhile a woman at 35 will be like "heartbreak is hard, actually" or "i feel betrayed by a friend" or "i am struggling with something emotionally." immediately people will say stuff like this woman is 35 by the way. by the way this woman is SO OLD to be experiencing this. BY THE WAY.

im 31, almost 32. the other day a poet was blasted online because at her "big age", she had written a poem about feeling unloved. top comment was "this woman is 29 by the way." this woman is too old to still be useful, by the way. she has to behave better . maybe if she was a good wife and mother she could stop existing loudly, and the story could continue on without her. this woman has served her purpose, by the way. she's so cringe, by the way. at 29 - so old! - she still hasn't figured out that her existence should be one of shame.
