she’s infamous for cheating on her soccer bf like 5x (supposedly) but honestly good for her for changing up gender norms <3 also extra context to her ex - I know him from soccer obviously but also there were some pap pics of him with a guy where they looked very friendly. &they still care so much for each other but john cares more about his “”legacy”” and he struggles to come to terms with the fact that now, amanda as an individual and his legacy are two separate entities. & he can’t keep letting her “ruin” his work by putting people in rigged traps but he obviously can’t go to the police and hoffman won’t help him which means he has to stop her himself. so they have this cat and mouse chase just like hoffman & strahm did in saw v (but like. lesbian daughter and unsupportive father version). and he still has to dig up information on her past like strahm did for hoffman, which forces him to confront the life that he told her to leave behind for the sake of their work.

&the entire theme of the glass coffin being trust, so when amanda’s asking him to enter the glass coffin she’s asking him if he can still trust her, if he ever really trusted her in the first place. if it’s too late for him to ever trust her again. he said he trusted her to carry on his legacy, but can he trust her to save his life?

&just like in saw v, he throws her into the coffin & makes her watch him die

Nathan & Jefferson

I wanted to write up this meta and the one about his family first because they are so important to how I write Nathan. I don't know if this will be contentious with the rest of the community or not. Some of this is based on my interpretation of Jefferson and A LOT of it is based on Irons version of him.

Nathan met Jefferson in the spring. Up until this point, Nathan had only limited encouragement of his artistic interests. Jefferson reached out to Nathan, complimenting his work and picking up on the fact that he was troubled. Of course, there was resistance at first. But Jefferson kept trying to reach out to him. And Nathan felt like he actually cared about him.

This relationship seemed normal at first. Nathan felt cared about. Loved like his father never loved him. It made him happy to be taken under his wing. Of course, Jefferson's real motivations were not so pure. They were to secure money from the Prescott Fortune and because Nathan would allow him easy access to the girls he wanted to capture. Manipulation like this doesn't come easy, even with someone as mentally unstable as Nathan. Because as mentally unstable as Nathan is, he is also incredibly resistant to help. I do think this gets worse after Rachel, but it was still a factor.

Nathan got closer to Jefferson than he should to a teacher. And Jefferson used his authority to help Nathan out at first. To the point where Nathan truly believed that he had his best interest in mind. Getting him to help Jefferson with normal projects and making him feel invaluable.

And then Rachel.

So we know that Nathan and Rachel had a bit of a falling out since he reported her for carrying drugs at school. After that, Nathan retreated more into Jefferson's control. And so once his relationship with Rachel was totally fractured, it was easy to convince him. Jefferson had done so much for Nathan. And they weren't actually going to HURT Rachel. She would just think she drank too much, right? Well, as discussed in this post, what actually happened after that is foggy. Here are the facts: Nathan put something in Rachel's drink and he took her to Jefferson. She died. And while I think that Jefferson killed her and posed her and Nathan together so he could never turn on him, it doesn't matter. Nathan thinks he did it. Though he often flips between who is at fault. Him, Jefferson, or total denial. But he does remember passing out. He remembers the needle.

From that point on, the relationship changed. Jefferson would go from lovebombing Nathan to being cold and dismissive. He would give him what he needed and then cruelly take it away. He would ignore him before finally showing him attention. And while I think the only people that Nathan actually helped Jefferson with are Rachel (he supposedly OD'ed her) and Kate (he didn't give her enough which led to the video and him emergency buying more at the barn), it still became one of Nathan's primary needs, to please him and get back to Where They Were.

I present the following:

This is a text on Nathan's burner phone. I think this is from Jefferson. His father would openly talk to him via email, but not Jefferson. Jefferson knows Nathan is a drug addict but Nathan seemed afraid for his family to find out. This text even follows Jefferson's way of speaking. This text alone would have pushed him to do what he did to Kate.

So let's talk about after Kate. This was his chance to prove himself. But he fucks up again. Kate makes out with a bunch of guys before he can isolate her and take her to Jefferson. He has to call Frank out to their secret place to get more. At this point, Nathan is freaked out. He drugs Chloe on his own to prove himself "an adult that can get things done on his own" and he STILL gives her the wrong amount. Nathan does NOT want to OD someone again and since he isn't the one that OD'ed Rachel, he is constantly giving too little.

So let's also talk about the gun. Nathan is given a gun and I am about 90% sure this was not from Jefferson (the last thing he needed was for Nathan to kill someone bc he's unstable and spill the beans) but I think Nathan carried the gun to protect himself from Jefferson. He thought Jefferson was going to kill him after his consistent fuck ups. But that point, he had to know what he was capable. There was still this need to please him. But seeing as how happy he is that Max sells Jefferson out, I feel like they weren't on the best terms anymore.

I also believe the note in the dark room is from Jefferson. The way of speaking is way different from Sean's email.

This is from Jefferson. Nathan's actions make a lot more sense. The reason he was so hard on Chloe's blackmail attempt is because his family doesn't know about the druggings and the addiction. But Jefferson does. And also if Jefferson found out he fucked up again, he would probably ditch him (pinning it all on him since there is WAY more evidence connecting him to it) or kill him. We know that Nathan isn't really shocked when Jefferson comes for him.

I think after the entire ordeal with Kate, Nathan is mentally checked out. He fucked up three times (even if one time Jefferson was not privy to) and he wanted out.

I also think that Jefferson didn't add a binder for Victoria until after she tried to threaten him considering he outright says she was "too harsh for his lens" and that he didn't want her. That was a spur of the moment thing to profit off of her "accidental" death that he would probably use to set Nathan up (as we see in the game too).

So I will say this, there was def a tightrope being walked. Nathan made shitty choices and dug himself into a hole he could not have gotten out of without help. And sadly, the things he did were bad enough that he would have to confess to crimes to get that help. And he kept digging himself deeper. Jefferson completely used him, and Nathan was in denial for a long time. He hates Jefferson by the time he dies. I think even before that. But he kept trying to reach the days where he didn't. The days where Jefferson cared about him. And he couldn't because it never existed. He only realized that at the noose was tightened around his neck at the very end.

Anyway, Im not falling into the trap of being even cautiously optimistic about this book. If anything the new R&G has really taught me a lesson, to not anticipate hope, joy or any significant improvement to Gambit’s characterization unless the entire X-office is cleaned out and replaced. But I do enjoy Maddie, she should have fun with these three.
