     "oh." something strange unfurls in her chest. a sort of warmth fills her slowly, little pinpricks all over that trickle down to her knees and toes. her limbs feel like she slept on them awkwardly and now has to SHAKE them awake.

rey can't quite place the unnamed emotion that fills her. it seems silly to think of it as happiness. has she ever felt that before? not really, she thinks. not like this -- for no reason, oddly emotional over something that has nothing to do with food or SURVIVAL.

but cal is her friend. the best friend she's ever had. and despite all the ways she knows she hasn't been a very good friend to him, he hasn't ditched her yet.

he'd been waiting for her. the unfamiliar feeling in her chest gives a little flutter.

her lips tug into a soft smile before she can stop them. her face feels warm, like the rest of her, and she averts her eyes with something akin to shyness as her teeth worry her chapped bottom lip.

"you didn't have to do that," rey murmurs. she can hear the way it sounds -- like she's GLAD he did, anyway. she wonders if cal can hear that, too.

she wonders how long it will be until she is able to say precisely what she means, not hiding behind any other, bland words.

rey clears her throat. she turns her smile on him. that much, she can do -- and he deserves to see it. "thank you."
