Sounds weird but I’m trying to lose weight after becoming basically very fat from pandemic and mental health issues and just wondering if you and others have any workout recommendations or tips ? I will do it all safely and I eat properly too!
So I gained some weight as well during the pandemic. Here are some things that helped me get back on track.
I bought a Peloton bike, however the app is amazing and I downloaded it to my TV to do other exercises. I also have a Fit Bit to keep track of my steps/exercise. I also make sure to take the dog on a 2 mile walk 3-4x per week...used to be longer but it is hard with my schedule now we are back to in office. One thing is that I am SUPER competitive with others and myself so that helps me try and reach my daily goals. Also you can turn cleaning house or chores into an easy workout. There are also exercises you can find on Pinterest. Like 30 day challenges that are really good depending on where you want to tone.
A thing that is VERY important is a food scale. I weight ALL of my food to the serving size and keep a mental (used to write it down) track of my daily caloric intake.
Foods high in fiber are SUPER important. I eat a Baby Spinach salad every day that I weigh out that has an assortment of veggies. I usually do a protein smoothie in the morning. You can find a list of lean meats that you should try and stick to. The leaner the better and the more ounces you can have. That fattier the meat the more you need to eat less.
Do your BMI and see how much fiber you should be getting daily.
I also have pretty much cut out bread/pasta as much as I can. Every now and then I indulge but carbs sit like a lead weight for me.
I have a printed grocery list so I know exactly what I need each week to stay within budget but also to make healthy choices.
I only have water & milk in the house so no sodas or juices which contain tons of sugar. The milk is for my kiddo but I use personally almond milk. Even got my dad to switch to it from normal milk to help with his high blood pressure. You need to make sure you drink half your body weight in water daily. This will help more than you know.
An app that can help with better food choices is Fooducate. You can scan the barcode of food that is ranked by nutritionists. See where it is scored and search for healthier alternatives. You can also enter in all the food you eat during the day and it will show you where you need to adjust.
Another thing is to keep an itemized budget. When you add up all the $ you spend on eating out/unhealthy, it really knocks some sense into you how much $ you are wasting with bad habits.
When you start to clean eat and exercise, you will feel like crap for a few days but the energy you will have after about 4-5 days will change your life. Believe me.

This bread didn't salty or was doughy which is a good thing.
I would eat this again but as almond butter and red plum preserves sandwich.

I spend my life being fat. It caused gout, diabetes, my legs filling with fluids, pain, difficulty moving. Bullying was common place at school. “Kids will be kids” they said and it was not referred to as Bullying. It was called “Teasing.” Teachers saw, but walked away. Some kids fatter than me, higher up on the social chain picked on me. It reduced my self esteem to almost zero.
Depression, binge eating and very much anger as a result. I was depressed because I was so fat and made fun of. When depressed, I would eat.
So how did I go from Fat to Fit?
Well I got diagnosed with diabetes in 2019. I weighed 440 lbs, and already in legal trouble because of my depression. (Going into this in brief.) Basically, a welfare check gone wrong, panic attack during handcuffing, tackle 440 pound man, fell on officer, pinned, officer under me that was pinned with me needed a new trigger finger. Gravity and my weight did the rest. Court said it was my fault I was tackled on the officer and pinned on the officer.
In all honesty, it happened in 2018 before police reform, before what happened with George Floyd. So no consideration was given to how the police acted, and I am stuck with a resisting/bodily harm to an officer/soft tissue damage felony. (Yes. It’s one charge, three titles.)
Anyways, needless to say, I had a lot of weight on my shoulders. Diabetes was the tipping point. My Reverend had diabetes and the lord healed him of it. So yes, since November 2019, I put in the work, I put in the diet work, I stay on course.
Fitness Boxing 1 was my starting point. I ate very differently. I had Crock Pot Pasta when I was working in 2020. Whole Grain pasta and pasta sauce. Cream of Mushroom and Cream of chicken with veggies. No idea how much protein I should be having.
I had to do the research. Fooducate was a very excellent resource. I still had no fitness tracker until late 2020. I still struggled with my addiction to fast foods and pizza.
Honestly I USED to be able to say I had pizza delivery from every place in town. Pizza, Ramen Noodles and Pasta was my staple foods. I also LOVED cheese. Of course, I would overeat.
I still put in the work and made progress. From the Stimulus checks, I took that money and invested in myself. I had trouble sleeping from the trauma from the Police thingy. I got myself a face mask, a weighted blanket, weights to lift, a workout training mask, power punch pro, weighted sand bags for arms and legs, weighted gloves, etc.
I invested in myself and my future, and after getting Zumba for Nintendo Switch, I got Fitness Boxing 2 in 2021. When I was not working, I was exercising.
My body began to CRAVE exercise. Going a month without focusing exercises on my core caused issues. However, Since I started in fitness boxing in 2019, I was loosing weight. I went from a 4XL shirt to barely being able to wear a 2XL in 2020. The following year I was barely able to wear an XL. In February 2022 I was barely able to wear a large.
In September I joined Noom. Again, some people want to get told what to do, what to eat, and when to do it. Noom.. was and still is a way to expand your mind. Learn why you do the things you do and fix it. Learning the power of the mind, and how it can heal. ALOT of new age stuff. They would give you the tools, but you had to carve out your own path.
I chose the path of prayer and meditation. Two things that I was bound to in the past. I was part of the Pentecostal Church, but raised a Lutheran. Then I abandoned the teachings of the Lord when I turned 21 and found something that was a better fit. Buddhism became a huge part of my life until 2018, when I got invited to my current Pentecostal Church.
I still do those things. Currently I walk everywhere instead of driving, and I pray when I walk. I pray in the shower. I meditate and recharge and balance my chakra. I have nights where I will stay up as late as I can with my Orgone Pyramid, using sacred objects and stones as I focus on recharging and repairing my body.
Noom gave me the tools, and I used it to change my diet, and eventually Graduated from the program. In December 2021, I was already weighing 340 on the scale. It is difficult, because I am replacing fat with Muscles, and my Target Goal is 200lbs.
I gotta honesty say that in order to get to 200 lbs, I have to have like 2% body fat or something.
So how did I go from “I don’t care about myself enough” to “Eating Lighting and Crapping Thunder?” Well I had a dream once upon a time.
When I was growing up, I wanted to do karate. Mostly to take care of the “Teasers” that decided it would be a good idea to throw me down a cement staircase, or spit on me, (Yes. Not a metaphor. They LITERALLY spit on me. People watched, laughed, no one said boo, so it happened daily.) or lit my backpack on fire. (Yep. They took a lighter to my backpack.)
However, I did not take karate until 2012. It was probably for the best. My Sensei taught honor, discipline, and when not to fight. I decided to NOT be involved with it for fame. I wanted to learn Karate for me. Unfortunately I didn’t get far when the Dojo got shut down. The Dojo was originally created by Sensei Paul Harris, and unfortunately I joined after his death in 2010. I had the honor of working under who was left, including his wife and daughter.
I didn’t accomplish much before the Dojo went under, but I did learn a lot about Sensei Harris. He was one of the few Americans that studied from a real Dojo in Okinawa. When his master died, he was chosen to go back and pay tribute. He knew Tommy Oliver (Better Known for his work as the Green/White Ranger on Power Ranger that passed away a few months ago.) and did a few martial arts things with him.
I mostly knew Sensei from his work he did in our Optimist club. He had a very tight relationship with us and this city. Karate opened many, many doors for the man. He was respected, and honored.
So my dream of practicing karate came true. I got to High Gold Belt, before the Dojo went under. 😭
So when I started boxing, Rocky became my new inspiration. Then I learned that my love for the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai were connected in more ways then one.
“Fear does not exist in this Dojo. Pain does not exist in this Dojo. Defeat does not exist in this Dojo. Strike First. Strike Hard. No mercy. In here, on the streets, when a man faces you, he is the enemy. The Enemy deserves no mercy.” Are some of the words Sensei John Kreese speaks from the films.
In the series, he puts it into perspective. All that talk above got them through a war. However the creedo caused him to turn on his own. It might help you in an official match. It might help you in the ring. Defending yourself on the streets.
In Rocky 4, I remember hearing his trainer tell him “No pain.”
The famous “No Pain, No Gain” also fits here. Somehow I became obsessed with getting stronger. I didn’t like feeling weak, I didn’t like having my life in the hands of others. Sometimes that’s the way it is, no matter how strong you are. I NEEDED to make myself as strong as I could to reduce those chances.
I had to change my thinking, get control of my disabilities, loose weight, and get stronger. By SHEER FORCE OF WILL. I wanted it so bad up here in my mind, that I worked so hard to MAKE IT HAPPEN.
It was hard. At times people thought I was crazy because I was using some new fangled device. I wear a training mask. It reduces oxygen intake, increases your heart rate and was also known as an “Altitude Mask” used in the training of mountain climbers that wanted to try and climb Everest.
I hooked my body up to a “Power Punch Pro” which attaches my arms and legs to a belt via a bungee cord. This type of technique was also used to rehabilitate people who were in physical rehabilitation. It adds resistance to your workout similar to resistance bands.
My obsession lead me to experiment on myself to make myself stronger. I am still here, in the BEST SHAPE OF MY LIFE, and in better shape then I was in High School.

Fuuhhk. This weekend was just so busy I completely forgot to log what I was eating. For the sake of time let's just say it followed the trend proceeding it.
Yesterday I got an app called Fooducate. It's bomb. It tracks your caloric and sugar intake AND gives each food a "grade" (a,b,c,d, or f based on the American grading system). You can also log your water intake, exercise, sleep, weight, some measurements, and goals. The app also gives your "day" a grade based on how healthy it was and how productive it was towards your goals. It's pretty cool.
This morning I had Greek yogurt with some granola and then I went for a run.
