Folk Song Friday!
What Are You Fighting For?
youtube
Phil Ochs Recorded 1963-1964, released 1976
What Are You Fighting For is another classic Anti-war song, written in the era of anti-war in Vietnam protest songs. This one is one of my favorites because it is vague enough to remain relevant and applicable even today.
Put ragged clothes upon your back and sleep upon the ground And tell police about your rights as they drag you down And ask them as they lead you to some deserted door Yes, I know you're set for fighting, but what are you fighting for?

Note
can we have folk friday
Yes ofc♥️
This is Connie Converse she was my intro to folk music and she's also very very cool.
My facts are a little wobbily and I'm mostly paraphrasing but from what I remember she wasnt a huge success during her lifetime I think the most her career ever took off was one or two recordings and a spot on a news show. Most of her music was released after her disappearance, yes disappearance we don't actually know what happened to Connie converse just that she packed up her life in her car and was never heard from again. The songs you find on spotify are compiled personal recordings provided by family and friends
This was meant to be posted yesterday 😔

Oh look, it seems like there's a Republican-led movement to purge voter rolls in the lead-up to the election! It's almost as if your vote matters and they don't want you to vote! Anyway, I whipped up a quick map (based on this) that shows when the voter registration deadline is in each state. There are a few deadlines coming up in the next week or so.
If you live in a state that regularly purges voter rolls for infrequent voters (the orange ones in the first map), or if you moved recently, it's good to check if you're still registered to vote.
Vote.org makes it super easy to check your registration: https://www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/
Just put in your address and DOB and they'll tell you whether you're registered. (And they give you a quick link to register online if it turns out that you're not! Only the 9 states in white on my map don't have online registration, and for those they provide instructions on how to do it via mail or in person.) If you want an extra verification, find your state's election website and double-check there.
So yeah, give yourself peace of mind -- do a quick check. :)

It’s so funny when religious people are like “I can’t do/say/wear/eat XYZ because god told me not to” and you just have to be like. Ok.

Sorry, but we’re burying your girlfriend alive. Yeah, she decided that the laws of Zeus take precedence over the laws of the state. Your father’s trapping her in a cave in punishment for giving her brother a burial. I mean, you can try to talk him out of it, but good luck. So sorry.

Folk Song Friday!
youtube
Tom Paxton, 1972
This song doesn't really have a lot of history for me to talk about. It was recorded and released in 1972 for the "Peace Will Come" album by Tom Paxton. What makes this song really interesting is how different it is to Tom Paxton's usual work. A lot of his most famous songs like "Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation" and "Buy a Gun for Your Son" and even lesser known songs that I'm constantly thinking about like "I Don't Want a Bunny Wunny" are all biting political satire and incredibly funny. He's a silly guy. So it surprises me how haunting and sad this song is. I really like it! thanks for reading.
